Every major victory is historic in its own right, but for Sir Bob Charles his 1963 Open win was a first on multiple fronts. Charles was the first left-handed player to win one of golf's big four, but was also the first player from New Zealand to do so and one of the last two players to take part in a 36-hole playoff for the title. Sir Bob sat down with Rod Morri to reminisce on a career in which he won more than 70 times as a professional, yet came about having only ever had two golf lessons in his entire life.

Very sad news this afternoon that Bob Jones has passed away. It's not altogether a surprise – he was getting on in age, and he had been feeling unwell and slowing down for at least a couple of years. But still, it is the passing of a great, colourful, larger than life character. I can't remember when I first met Bob, but I've known him for close to twenty years. He was actually the first person I saw at my wedding on my wedding day... because he was leaving. I was late —which frankly is a bride's prerogative— but he was so cross at how late I was that he stormed out of the wedding, bumped into me outside, fortunately turned around and went back in. And then afterwards, he gave me a rundown of the things he enjoyed and didn't enjoy about the wedding, inducing: could've kept the champagne and canapes going for longer and could've skipped the dinner. He gave some pretty unusual life advice. When I was pregnant with my son, we had dinner with Bob one night and he spent a long time telling me that my son would wear me out because boys are energetic, and that if I had a girl next I would probably think there was something wrong with her, and might want to take her to the doctor but there would be nothing wrong with her – boys are just more energetic than girls. He was right of course. Not everyone loves Bob. I know that. He was a polarising character, but he had something that many of us could learn from, and that was a wicked sense of humour. He laughed a lot. He played pranks. He enjoyed mocking things he didn't like. He was incredibly wealthy, but not pretentious – e grew up in a state house in Naenae after all. And he was very clever. Read anything he's written – you'll wish you could write like him. I count myself lucky to have known Bob Jones. He's one of those characters we seemed to have had a lot of in the 70s and 80s but don't seem to make nowadays. As someone else said today: New Zealand is duller without him. A passionate author and a man with a sharp wit and unapologetically colourful personality who shaped New Zealand politics. Sir Bob Jones is being remembered by friends, former MPs, and current political leaders. The property investor, ex politician, and boxing aficionado died at his Wellington home today at 85, surrounded by family. Sir Bob grew up in a state house and made his riches in the world of property. Former Act MP and friend of his, Deborah Coddington told Heather du Plessis-Allan his actions were different from his words, which you shouldn't take too seriously. She says he was very generous with his money, offering a scholarship for refugees to go to university. Coddington says he was a realist, who always found the funny side of life. She describes him as very well read, clued-in about world affairs and politics, and a good writer. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The 85-year-old died peacefully at his Wellington home surrounded by family after a brief illness. As recently as a few weeks ago, Jones was still writing on his ‘No Punches Pulled' blog, calling US President Donald Trump “a world-class ignoramus”, and rallied against the “working from home racket” in his last blog on April 16. Newstalk ZB Senior Political Correspondent Barry Soper told Matt Heath and Tyler Adams every conversation with Sir Bob was one to treasure and hard to forget. “He was deliberately obnoxious at times, but for those of us who knew him well, we knew the cut of the man's cloth, and he was a thoroughly decent individual.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sir Bob Jones has died at the age of 85 and being remembered for the splash he made in New Zealand politics. He died peacefully at his Wellington home surrounded by family after a brief illness. In 1984, he launched the New Zealand Party to protest Robert Muldoon's National Party Government, winning 12.5% of the vote in 1984. Radio Hauraki Host Jeremy Wells told Matt Heath and Tyler Adams that Jones loomed large over the political landscape, and New Zealand landscape as a whole. Jones always gave people his time, Wells says, and his stories were second to none. “He was a great raconteur, an amazing conversationalist, even if at times it was more of a listening exercise for the other person involved in the conversation – you we're definitely happy to listen.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Did you shun publicity in the spotlight deliberately? I think on some levels, yes, I do. But the main thing was that I wanted to spend a lot more time working, rather than spending a lot of time promoting the work. Today on NZ Sporting history we look back at the career of one of the greatest sportsmen the country has ever produced. Sir Bob Charles had only been playing golf professionally for three years when he made history aged 27 as the first - and only - Kiwi to win the British open, in 1963. At the time he was the first left-hander to win a major title. But the longevity of his professional career - which spanned 50 years, proved he's anything but a novelty. He racked up 75 world tournament wins, including five at the North American PGA Tour. In 2010 Sir Bob finally stepped back from competitive golf, and now at age 86 has had a biography published of his remarkable life and career. And he joins me now.

He says its also a bit because from his point of view there isn't an obvious standout candidate to replace the two-term Auckland leader. Sir Bob speaks to Corin Dann.

A message from former mayor, Sir Bob Parker, will be read out. Sir Bob, who led the city through one of its most challenging periods, recently suffered a major stroke and heart attack. Sir Bob Harvey is a Westie to the core. He's a successful writer, historian, politician, environmental campaigner, film guy, advertising gun, surf life-saver and co-founder of the Going West Writers Festival.  In this address from the opening of the 2013 Going West Writers Festival, Sir Bob pays homage to the West coast and the role that this landscape, and the books he loves, have played in his extraordinary life, a life given over in large part to the service of his community. If the previous episode of this series celebrated the Bogan Westie stereotypes of the TV show Outrageous Fortune, this episode celebrates all the many other facets of West Auckland.  The former Waitakere City is also home to free thinkers, artists, writers and readers and one of the oldest literary festivals in the country. Sir Bob Harvey, recently described on RNZ by Paula Morris as “the mayor of everything”, has lived all these things as a true Westie renaissance man. Much of the detail from this talk made it into his 2014 biography Wild Westie: the incredible life of Bob Harvey by Hazel Phillips.

In another GHQ magazine exclusive, famed Boomtown Rats front man Bob Geldof is interviewed by Alan McGee (no introduction needed here!) discussing everything from punk, glam-rock and music (and its failings). Music has always been the epicenter of Geldof's life, and it was also discussed during the interview how Alan felt Sir Bob could've found a life as a writer. Other subjects discussed are relevant bands, social media and how easy it is to be famous with little or no effort. Is there a perfect time for (another) social revolution? Instead, let's discuss the conversations between himself and Prince Charles. It's well known that Bob Geldof was frontman for the late '70s to mid '80s Irish punk rock band the Boomtown Rats. He also conceived and co-wrote Band Aid's tune “Do They Know It's Christmas?” with his friend, musician Midge Ure of Ultravox, which became the 1984 Christmas number one in the UK and the best-selling British pop single until that time. Wikipedia reported that Geldof was granted an honorary knighthood (KBE) by Elizabeth II in 1986 for his charity work in Africa; although it is an honorary award as Geldof is an Irish citizen he is often referred to as ‘Sir Bob'. He is a recipient of the Man of Peace title which recognises individuals who have made “an outstanding contribution to international social justice and peace”, among numerous other awards

Sir Bob Scott is a man deeply respected within the fabric of the United Kingdom. His involvement in moving the Theatre Industry forward in this country is unarguable. Not only that but his involvement in obtaining the Common Wealth Games to the City of Manchester in 2002 was crucial, as well as this he led Liverpool's successful Bid to become the European Capital of Culture in 2008. The one thing that sprung out to me when interviewing Bob was that he quite simply never settled for one career path. He moved onto whatevwe excited him most at the time. His undeniable characteristic of being curious led him into a tonne of different areas that have had an extremely positive impact. His persuasive tendencies provided him with sensational results in the areas he went into and for that this country should be ever so thankful. All of which resulted in his knighthood awarded in 1994. This is slightly different to many episodes I have done due to the age and experience of Sir Bob. However that should be viewed as a positive as we are extremely lucky to have been gifted with an hour of this man's life. He is a truly fantastic man and I will always cherish the hour I got to spend with him.
