First up is the patron saint of cult-busting, Leah Remini, who's book Troublemaker chronicles her remarkable journey toward emotional and spiritual freedom from Scientology, both for herself and for her family. Next is Mike RInder. Having spent his youth doing things like, for example, swabbing the decks of L. Ron Hubbard's yacht, Rinder eventually made it into the elite sect of Scientology known as the Sea Organization, eventually becoming Scientology's International Spokesperson and the head of its Office of Special Affairs. Then, he escaped and became a fearless and outspoken ex-member. Last is Jon Atack – one of the only court-appointed expert witnesses on Scientology, and his book: Let's Sell These People a Piece of Blue Sky, about the early history of the church, is cited by academics all over the world. Jon was a ‘public' Scientologist for nine years, trained as a counselor, and even did the secret ‘OT' levels, but ditched it when he discovered appalling, aggressive behavior towards members. Joining us this week for the second time is ex-OSA Scientologist and whistleblower, survivor, teacher, blogger, independent journalist and researcher, and survivor advocate, Scott Gordon!  If you've been listening to this show for a while, you've seen many examples of how cults hide in plain sight where the only people who see their shadows are the victims. Scientology is a cult we have all heard of and the mystique behind it involving the infamous L. Ron Hubbard, high profile actors straight out of Hollywood, and people in positions of power undoubtedly leaves a lot to the imagination. It's a looming topic I've been wanting to cover since beginning this podcast and I'm grateful to have met Scott who has unique insight into and about Scientology from his personal experience working within the church. He was trained in Scientology's infamous intelligence bureau, the “OSA” aka the ‘Office of Special Affairs' and became more of an ‘insider' than most ground-level staff ever do. He has a blog called ‘Watchful Navigator” where he documents and whistle-blows his harrowing experiences in his years in the Church of Scientology and shares insider information on topics related to what he uncovered during and after his time in the Church of Scientology and since awakening to Scientology being a cult back in 2006. The thing I appreciate the most about Scott's testimony and insight is that he's able to share two sides of the story - the good and the bad, the truth and the lies - so that we can understand why so many have been intrigued by AND deceived by Scientology. If cults were all bad, people would have no interest in joining. Rinder was raised a Scientologist from the age of 6 and finally escaped the organization when he was 52.Shortly after he graduated high school in April 1973 he joined the Sea Organization (Sea Org). This is the dedicated core of scientology, Sea Org members sign a billion year commitment to forward the aims of scientology and live communally with other Sea Org members, pretty much out of touch with the outside world. Mike Rinder was raised as a Scientologist from the age of 5 when his parents began attending the Scientology International Center in Australia in the early 1960s. He eventually went on to serve as Scientology's international spokesperson. Mike was the head of OSA- Scientology's Office of Special Affairs and was a member of the Board of directors of the Church of Scientology International. Since denouncing Scientology, Rinder has become a prominent whistleblower against its abuses. He appeared in the HBO documentary Going Clear and co-hosted all three seasons of Leah Remini's Emmy Award-winning show Scientology and the Aftermath. He and Remini also co-host the podcast Scientology: Fair Game. His excellent new memoir, A BILLION YEARS: My Escape From a Life in the highest Ranks of Scientology is available now. Surely this will never change. In any event, they have a new assignment from Professor X, which is to capture the Vanisher, a mutant who has the ability to teleport. The Vanisher is using his abilities to rob banks in a garish costume. He announces his intention to rob the Pentagon, which leads to much consternation. FBI Special Agent Fred Duncan reaches out to Professor X to ask him for help in preventing the Vanisher from carrying out his threat. The X-Men are sent into the field but are unable to capture the man who can disappear at will. The next time they meet is on the lawn of the White House - the X-Men versus the Vanisher and a veritable army of thugs. Before they can engage, Professor X uses his incredible telepathic powers to get the Vanisher to forget that he can teleport, and then forget who he is, leaving the X-Men to take down the thugs, which they do with ease.Assumed before the next episode:People breathe a sigh of relief that the Vanisher has been dealt with, although the conscientious among them wonder what became of him.This episode takes place:After the thugs have been cleared off the White House lawn. Mike Rinder is a former senior executive of the Church of Scientology International (CSI) and the Sea Organization based in the United States. From 1982 to 2007 Mike served on the board of directors of CSI and also held the post of executive director of its Office of Special Affairs, overseeing the corporate, legal and public relations matters of Scientology at the international level. Rinder left Scientology in 2007. From 2016 to 2019, he co-hosted the A&E documentary series Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath.
