If you own stuff, I am sorry to report that you are probably poorer today than you were on Friday, and even less wealthy than you were the Friday before. Things are selling off and we had to talk about it:Stocks are down, and cryptos are getting utterly hammered. It's a bad time to own equities, but worse if you are invested in digital assets. Bitcoin, ether, and Solana are taking body-blows while the stock market wilts. I guess this means that all our 401k contributions will be cheaper in February? Small wins, but still.Swiggy raised a huge round at a simply enormous price, which is good for the company but has us asking questions. OfficeSpace raised $150 million, which caught our eye, and the recent Spectrum Labs appears to make good sense. And to close out we asked is the party over? This MG Siegler piece was in our brain as we chewed over the situation. The dissonance between the public and private markets feels peak, and we aren't sure how quickly their diverging velocities can keep up the tension.Regardless of how the selloff is impacting you, we hope that you have a lovely week and stay warm. Hugs!
Lisa Thee leads Launch Consulting Group's Data for Good practice, where she helps the world's most innovative healthcare and global technology companies improve digital safety using AI and machine learning. Previously, Lisa was the Co-founder and CEO of Minor Guard, an AI software company focused on making children safer online and in real life. She also currently serves as an advisory board member for Humaxa, tCheck, Spectrum Labs, and Marketplace Risk, and as a member of the Board of Directors for 3Strands Global Foundation. Lisa has been named as a top thought leader and woman in business by Thinkers360. Additionally, she is the co-author of Demystifying Artificial Intelligence for the Enterprise and the host of the Navigating Forward podcast. In this episode… We all want to protect our children online — and AI is proving to be an incredibly effective tool for doing just that. So, how exactly can you use AI to eliminate crimes like child pornogrophy and human trafficking? If a child is missing and officials suspect the child is being trafficked, there's a 75% chance they're being sold online. But, if the only option detectives have is to scroll through ad after ad, they are wasting valuable time to find the missing child. With AI facial recognition technology, on the other hand, a computer can do a much quicker search and identify the closest matches. Now, police can quickly recover the child and build a case against the trafficker instead of wasting precious time scrolling. In this episode of She Said Privacy/He Said Security, Jodi and Justin Daniels sit down with Lisa Thee, the lead for Launch Consulting Group's Data for Good practice, to talk about using AI to protect children online. Lisa explains how AI can speed up criminal research, her tips for protecting your children's privacy and security, and how to better collaborate as a society to combat human trafficking.
For some of us, financial and career success does NOT necessarily equal happiness. And for Lisa Thee, achieving the level of director at a multinational tech company was proving that true. Simply put, as a working mother and technology company executive, she was on the fast track to burnout. But in 2018, Lisa did something most others wouldn't...she changed her career focus from one of "success" to significance. And she never looked back. For starters, Lisa founded a safety focused software start-up - one which helped scale a leading Cybersecurity AI company to a $40M valuation. And now, less than 2 years later, she's leading Launch Consulting's Data for Good practice, helping the world's most innovative healthcare, technology, and gaming companies to accomplish some very ambitious goals such as improving digital safety, anti-toxicity, upskilling programs for diverse populations, and applying AI/machine learning for innovation in healthcare. But it doesn't stop there. Because as a successful female tech startup founder... ...Lisa is an actively sought after Board of Directors Member (she is a member for 3 Strands Global Foundation and the Sacramento Entrepreneurship Academy)... ...Keynote Speaker, and Consultant… ...and she was named to the Top 100 Human Trafficking and Slavery Disruptors List, and has a TEDx talk coming in 2021 on the topic of "Using AI to disrupt Human Trafficking in the Digital Age". Last, but certainly not least, Lisa currently serves as an advisory board member for Engineered Medical Solutions, Spectrum Labs, Marketplace Risk, and Humaxa. Our conversation with Bill Loucks went around the perception cops have on hemp and cannabis, how consumers and businesses in the industry can contribute to a safer use and what further is there to do about a broader awareness of hemp. Bill started with a couple stories that led to his mindset switch from regarding hemp as a dangerous substance to becoming a commodity. Moving on, Bill shared his view on law enforcement pointing out that most police officers are unaware of the difference between hemp and cannabis, which leads to confusion and also strengthens stereotypes. Following the latter, he listed best practice tips for consumers and businesses in the hemp industry, to support the authorities to determine the legality of the product being used or manufactured. For growers, he explained why it is important to communicate with the police on harvest season. Bill finished with his consideration on the next step in the transition to greater social acceptance around hemp-derived products. Podcast Show Notes with Dr. Byrareddy The entire world is looking for a solution to Coronavirus. And for good reason. As of early August 2020, 706,000 people have died from COVID-19 worldwide. In the United States alone, 160,000 people have died since the beginning of March 2020. Many researchers are putting in many hours of good work trying to figure out a solution. One of these scientists is Dr. Siddappa Byrareddy from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. We centered our conversation around his scientific article SARS-CoV2 induced respiratory distress: Can cannabinoids be added to anti-viral therapies to reduce lung inflammation? Dr. Siddappa Byrareddy, one of the authors, agreed to expand on his findings for the listeners of the Hemp Startup Journey. Not having a research background, I had many questions for Dr. Byrareddy to understand how CBD and cannabis can help COVID-induced lung inflammation. In this short conversation, Dr. Byrareddy explains some of his takeaways from sudying cannabis and HIV and how it lead him to study CBD's potential positive impact on COVID symptoms. Podcast Show Notes with Daniel Shortt A few days ago I saw an email slide into my inbox. My first though when I saw the title was, "No, this must be a joke." The title was too intriguing to not read it. So I did. The next day, the article's author and I were on the phone discussing the topic and decided to share a lengthier conversation for you to digest. The author is attorney Daniel Shortt and the title of the article that peaked my curiosity: It's Time To Disband The DEA. Daniel suggests that the DEA, a 50-year old organization that has been an integral part of the US government, with a $3 billion budget and over 10,000 employees, should no longer exist. After my initial shock at his brazenness subsided, I was able to understand Daniel's two key arguments as reasons why the DEA should not exist anymore: The DEA contributes to a systemic racist policing system The DEA has not been effective at curtailing drug use or drug supply While Daniel holds a strong opinion, his main intent is to create a conversation about the DEA's role in our country and how drug use should be properly addressed. Podcast Show Notes with Dr. Marne Coit This is a great conversation to listen to for anyone in the hemp community, but especially if you are a hemp farmer or are part of the hemp industry in North Carolina. In this episode I discuss with attorney and department of agriculture professor at NC State: The role of NC State on hemp market Dr. Coit's perspective on the CBD Oil market glut The current status of the NC Hemp pilot program and the risk of losing it in favor of following USDA guidelines https://hemp.ces.ncsu.edu/2020/04/status-quo-for-hemp-licenses-what-does-this-mean/ How farmers should think about whether to grow hemp for CBD oil this season Understanding and evaluating hemp contracts between farmers and processors What Dr. Coit would invest in if she had a million dollars And finally, my (possibly) silly idea that NC State could take on to fix the hemp industry marketplace trust issues Who is Dr. Marne Coit? Marne Coit's research and teaching focuses on food, agricultural and hemp law. She is a member of the NC State Extension hemp team. Dr. Coit earned her Master's degree in Environmental Law and JD from Vermont Law School, and her LLM in Food and Agricultural Law from the University of Arkansas School of Law in Fayetteville. A lot of guys have this assumption or belief that, all along the way, all along the path of life that they need to know. They need to have things under control. They need to know what to do. They need to know where to go. They need to know what actions to take. And, that basic uncertainty, which is, which is just overwhelmingly true if we slow down enough to find it, is that during this time, we haven't. -Dan Doty Show Notes This is one of the most in-depth conversations I've had on this podcast. Dan is the co-founder of EVRYMAN and the host of the EVRYMAN podcast. Some of the topics we cover during this episode: How Dan helps men slow down enough to understand what's happening in their own minds Owning the uncertainty and discomfort of the CORONAVIRUS pandemic What to do when our minds don't want us to feel what's really going on What if guys didn't have to live a life pretending that they didn't feel Men who can't take a compliment The relationship between the bottom line and how we treat people How Dan pivoted from their men's retreats after having to cancel 7 months worth of live events, which was 99% of their revenue Can we still connect as humans without face-to-face interaction? Dan's suggestions on how to move forward How to move from post-traumatic stress disorder to post-traumatic growth How COVID19 situation changed Dan's vision of the future About Dan Doty Dan Doty is a visionary entrepreneur, speaker, consultant, and the co-founder and voice of EVRYMAN. Dan is the host of the EVRYMAN podcast, and the former director of cult hit tv show MeatEater. He has been a 3-time guest on the Joe Rogan Experience, and twice on the Today Show. His role with EVRYMAN has been featured in the NYT, Men's Health, GQ, and many more national and international publications. Dan is a man's man with a well-developed tender side. He embodies the ability for men to be exactly who they are, and is sharing that message that there are as many definitions of manhood as there are men on the planet. What is EVRYMAN? EVRYMAN is an global movement helping men break open a new paradigm of how men live, how they show up, what they feel, and how they express themselves. EVRYMAN works against two main issues: The general state of repression and repressed emotions. Another deviation from the normal hemp and cannabis topics. I believe in taking care of our physical and mental health during this time of quarantine crisis. While we figure out the best strategies for our businesses and industry, it's important for us to find strategies that keep us physically active and having a mindset that keeps us moving towards positivity and away from negativity. My friend Courtney Sanford (Registered Nurse, CrossFit Coach, Precision Nutrition Sports Nutritionist) joins the Hemp Startup Journey podcast to discuss all things wellness while during COVID-19 quarantine. Courtney shares how to think about indulging (you don't have to avoid it), simple food-plating strategies, how she's choosing to physically move at home, what active athletes can do when they can't access the gym, and lots more to help you stay active, healthy and sane. About Courtney Sanford There is so much information out right now about different fitness programs, diets, weight loss gimmicks, Instagram models flashing boobs and butts, so many 30 day cleanses/challenges – it's honestly tough to look at. But, all of this noise doesn't make cultivating the healthiest version of yourself any less important, it just makes it trickier to figure out what ‘health' looks like for YOU. I see what happens when people choose to ignore creating healthy, sustainable habits every day in my job as a nurse, and it's is depressing because, while not all disease is preventable, a good majority of it is. It comes down to the small daily decisions we make. My hope is to give individuals the wellness tools they need to become the most optimal version of themselves so that I can avoid seeing them as a patient in a hospital bed later on. Sometimes I feel like a broken mp3 player. Almost every pet I see in an office call is being presented for itching, biting and scratching. Pet owners always want to blame skin issues on fleas but with the advent of advanced flea control medications, fleas are almost a parasite of the past. So why are these pets and the people who love them so miserable? What are the causes and more importantly what can be done to safely and effectively give them some relief? My usual guests on this show are veterinarians but other professionals also address the health concerns of dogs and cats, biochemists are also integrally involved. Dr. Mervyn Levin holds a Ph.D in biochemistry and is the president of Spectrum Labs.
