So, what can we do to protect ourselves? The video covers practical steps to reduce exposure to plastics and EDCs, such as choosing organic cotton clothing, switching to glass containers, avoiding plastic bottles, and opting for natural fibers in your wardrobe. We also discuss detox methods like sweating in the gym or sauna, and the importance of supporting regenerative farming practices. The science is clear: Microplastics and EDCs are disrupting our hormones and reproductive health, with studies showing significant damage to male fertility, shrinking AGDs (anogenital distances), and causing DNA fragmentation in sperm. These harmful effects are not just isolated to men; women are also affected, with evidence pointing to decreased ovarian reserve and reproductive capacity. We explore how microplastics enter our bodies through ingestion, inhalation, and skin absorption. From the food we eat, the water we drink, to the clothes we wear, the threat is omnipresent. The video highlights shocking studies, including findings of microplastics in human tissues and the alarming amount of plastic particles in bottled and tap water. The environmental impact is equally dire. Plastic mulch used in agriculture is contaminating our soil, and the relentless production of plastics is leading to an unimaginable amount of microplastic particulates in the air, water, and even rain. This widespread contamination affects wildlife, with research showing that cities near petrochemical plants have higher levels of genital malformations and fertility issues. But it's not just an environmental crisis—this is a personal health emergency. The potential link between EDCs and gender identity development is discussed, backed by studies indicating that phthalates might be contributing to feminization in males. The impact of these chemicals is complex, crossing anatomical, social, and political boundaries. As we discuss the implications of these findings, we also provide actionable tips for detoxifying your life. From eliminating plastic utensils and cookware to investing in air purifiers and sourcing your food from trusted, regenerative farms, every small step counts. The video also touches on how some communities, like the Amish, naturally avoid these toxins and maintain high fertility rates, suggesting that a return to simpler, more natural living could be key to overcoming these challenges.Lastly, the video addresses the grim reality that our overreliance on plastic is driving us toward an uncertain future. With evidence of plastics causing endocrine disruptions, fertility declines, and even gender imbalances, it's clear that this issue must be tackled head-on. Whether through individual choices or collective action, we must start reducing our exposure to these harmful substances now, before it's too late.Microplastics, Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals, EDCs, plastic exposure, fertility issues, sperm count, detox, natural living, regenerative farming, holistic health, environmental crisis, plastic in food, water contamination, organic cotton clothing, petrochemical plants, hormone disruption, gender identity, phthalates, BPA, plastic pollution, toxic chemicals0:00 Intro2:21 What The Study Says5:13 How Does Plastic Get Into Us?8:14 Garbage Feeding/ Regenerative Agriculture11:16 Microplastics And Plants16:07 Microplastics And Water18:47 Clothing, Can you Absorb Plastic Through Your Skin?24:20 MY Preferred Clothing Solution26:52 Inhaling Microplastic30:25 Microplastics And Male  Fertility37:02 Microplastics And Children40:26 Microplastics And Women42:14 The Government KNEW About This48:48 Male Birthrate Dropping50:26 Microplastics And Gender Dysphoria55:28 How To DetoxSupport the Show.@RealAndrewBriggs @HolisticMotionco HolisticMotion.com

For decades, North American Black women have been using hair relaxers  to help them fit into mainstream workplaces and the European standards of beauty that continue to dominate them.  More recently, research has linked these relaxers to cancer and reproductive health issues - and a spate of lawsuits across the United States, and at least one in Canada, have been brought by Black women against the makers of these relaxants. Cheryl Thompson, a professor at Toronto Metropolitan University and author of "Beauty in a Box: Detangling the Roots of Canada's Black Beauty Culture," joins Vinita to untangle the complicated history Black women like herself have with hair relaxants - and where these lawsuits might lead.

She is Professor of Environmental Medicine and Public Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, Adjunct Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California San Francisco and Senior Scientist at Environmental Health Sciences. Dr. Swan's work examines the impact of environmental exposures on reproductive health and neurodevelopment. Links for this episodehttps://www.shannaswan.com/https://twitter.com/drshannaswanhttps://www.instagram.com/drshannaswan/https://www.shannaswan.com/countdownEpisode Overview00:07:32 - Population Decline, The world's fertility rate has dropped from over five children per couple to under two now, and a large proportion of the world is now below replacement. 00:12:17 - The Roller Coaster of Fertility, The declining fertility rate in many countries means that we are headed towards a maximum world population, which will decrease and never come back. 00:15:37 - Social Causes of Fertility Decline, The decline in fertility is not just due to social causes like women entering the workforce and getting educated, but also due to environmental and lifestyle factors. 00:22:28 - Environmental and Lifestyle Factors Affecting Fertility, Environmental and lifestyle factors, such as exposure to phthalates and Bisphenol A, are major contributors to the decline in fertility. 00:16:51 - The Challenges of Motherhood and Fertility, Dr. Stephanie and Dr. Shanna discuss the challenges of motherhood and fertility. The decline in egg quality and sperm quality with age is a major limiting factor in infertility, which is a concern for women who choose to have babies later in life. 00:19:57 - Decline in Male Fertility, Dr. Shanna explains that research on the declining rate of male fertility has been around for 30 years. The first study in 1992 reported that sperm count had decreased by 50% in 50 years. However, this figure was met with skepticism. 00:23:30 - Early Puberty in Girls, Dr. Stephanie brings up the phenomenon of early puberty in girls, and Dr. Shanna explains that it is a real concern. Girls are starting menstruation earlier and earlier, which is not only a risk for psychological and social challenges but also for fertility. 00:25:46 - Environmental Factors Affecting Sperm Count, Dr. Shanna discusses her study on environmental factors affecting sperm count. She found that exposure to phthalates, a chemical found in plastics, is linked to lower sperm count. Exposure to other chemicals like bis00:34:10 - Factors Affecting Sperm Count, The recruitment bias and selection bias of the men in the studies from 1940 and 1990 were analyzed. The lifestyle factors of smoking, obesity, exercise, and stress were found to be important. Chemicals that affect the reproductive system, particularly testosterone and estrogen, were also identified.00:40:16 - Plastic Increase and Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals, After World War II, scientists were revered, and plastic production increased rapidly. However, plastic has a large number of chemicals that can alter hormones. Phthalates are particularly concerning as they lower testosterone levels and can affect genital formation during pregnancy.00:43:45 - Non-Monotonic Dose Response and Endocrinology, Hormones often respond non-linearly to low doses of chemicals, affecting not just testosterone, but also estrogen and the immune system. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals can have a significant effect, regardless of the dose.00:49:57 - Phthalate Syndrome, Phthalates can cause the phthalate syndrome, where exposure in utero in male rodents can affect genital formation and induce infertility and other health problems. Humans have phthalates in their bodies, and pregnant women are particularly at risk for exposure.00:51:44 - Development of Genitalia in Male and Female Fetuses, Dr. Swan explains how the genitals of fetuses develop under genetic regulation, and everything changes during a critical period of gestation. She highlights how testosterone contributes to the differentiation of genitalia in male fetuses and explains how insufficient testosterone exposure can undermasculinize males.00:54:27 - The Analogeneital Distance (AGD), Dr. Estima and Dr. Swan discuss the AGD and how it is an important distance that differentiates males and females in almost every mammal. They also discuss how it can be difficult to measure the AGD accurately because it is soft tissue and how standardization of the position of the legs is necessary when measuring the AGD.01:02:36 - The Phthalate Syndrome in Humans, Dr. Swan discusses how she found the phthalate syndrome in humans after researching variations in AGD, penile size, and descent of the testicles. She highlights how many papers have found other chemicals related to AGD and how she would love to see AGD become part of the standard of care.01:05:14 - Implications of AGD on Testosterone and Longevity, Dr. Swan explains how AGD has massive implications on men's capacity for testosterone, sperm production, and longevity. 01:08:09 - The Relationship between AGD and Sperm Count, Dr. Swan discusses her research on the relationship between AGD (anogenital distance) and sperm count. Her study found a direct linear relationship between the length of AGD and the number of sperm, indicating that the longer the AGD, the higher the sperm count. 01:13:27 - Phthalate Syndrome and Exposure, Dr. Swan explains phthalate syndrome, a condition assigned at birth that affects the male reproductive system and is caused by exposure to phthalates. She discusses the common sources of phthalates, such as plastic tubing, personal care products, and food packaging. 01:15:24 - NICU Exposure and Other Hormonal Effects, Dr. Swan highlights the dangers of exposure to phthalates and other hormone-disrupting chemicals in the NICU, where preemies are especially vulnerable. She also notes that these chemicals can affect other hormonal systems in the body, such as lung development, brain development, and blood pressure. 01:20:28 - BPA-Free Products and Other Chemicals, Dr. Swan addresses the issue of manufacturers substituting BPA-free products with similar chemicals that have the same effects. She also mentions other chemicals that disrupt hormones, such as PFAS chemicals in Teflon and sunscreen. 01:26:10 - Gender Dysphoria and Environmental Chemicals, Dr. Swan explores the relationship between gender dysphoria and exposure to environmental chemicals. She acknowledges the complexity of the topic and emphasizes the need for further research before drawing conclusions. We'd like to thank our sponsorsAthletic Greens – redeem an exclusive offer hereFourSigmatic Use code DRSTEPHANIE for 10% offOrion Red Light Therapy – Use the code STEPHANIE10 for 10% offSchinouusa – Use code DR.ESTIMA10 for 10% offBIOOPTIMIZERS – receive 10% off your order with Promo Code “ESTIMA”The DNA  Company – $50 discount using code “DRSTEPHANIE” at checkout.HVMN Ketones – get 10% off your order with Promo Code “STEPHANIE”ILIA BeautyLiving Libations – Use code BETTER for 15% offLMNT Electrolytes – A FREE 7-flavor sample pack!PRIMEADINE – get 10% Off your Order with Promo Code “DRSTEPHANIE10”Follow Me On InstagramWatch Better! on YouTubeGet yourself a copy of my best-selling book, The Betty BodyJoin the Hello Betty Community hereSign up for my FREE MASTERCLASS: HEALTHY OFFERS – for health practitioners looking for strategies to earn more moneyAre you A Healthcare Practitioner? "Everybody's Fancy" is a song by Fred Rogers which he performed on Mr. Rogers Neighborhood children's public TV show. He was gifted in imagination and in sharing it with others in person or through the new-fangled medium of television. He started in the very early days of programming. The song is about boys and girls and how our bodies are different but equally just great the way they are. I added a few stanzas for our modern times and think the song is still very relevant. I do not have Copyright permission but encourage you to sing along in the spirit of neighborliness and within the guidelines of Fair Use. The song is sung by Fred Rogers on the show many times over the years and a clip shows him from early years to later years - as cheerful and kind as ever. See: Was Mister Rogers a TERF? - by Mickey Z. - Post-Woke (substack.com) "Everybody's fancy", Fred Rogers, Lyrics with six additional lines by me: Some are fancy on the outside, Some are fancy on the inside, Chorus: Everybody's fancy, everybody's fine, Your body's fancy and so is mine. Stanza 2: Boys are boys from the beginning, Girls are girls right from the start. Stanza 3: (Only) girls can grow up to be the mommies, (Only) boys can grow up to be the daddies. Stanza 4: I think you're a special person and I like your ins and outsides. -> Copyright Fred Rogers estate. New Stanza 5: We grow up to be the workers. We grow up to be the leaders. New Stanza 6: Some may feel different on their insides. Some may feel different on their outsides. New Stanza 7: Some may feel like running bases. Some may feel like playing house. Everybody's happy, everybody's glad, That their body's healthy, and not a fad. Repeat chorus between each stanza except 7, and repeat Stanza 4 again at the end followed by the chorus again. *An initial version is included with the word 'Only' as Mr. Rogers sang it. It fits the tune better without the word and modern times too - slightly less abrasive without it. A second version with a new Stanza 7 chorus is included as an opening in case people don't want to hear about endocrine disrupting chemicals - the trauma part is in the second half though. You may have heard about BPA found in plastics being harmful to your health. We've all been told not to leave disposable water bottles in our car on a hot sunny day at least once before – and if you haven't, don't do it!! But there's more than just BPA hiding in our everyday foods, personal care products, air, water, and more.  Today, Dr. Jenna Hua, an environmental health scientist, dietician, and founder of Million Markers came on the podcast to educate us about endocrine-disruptors such as BPA. She gives us an overview of the most common toxins to look out for as well as some of the sneaky names manufacturers give them to try to disguise them. Unfortunately, many of these chemicals aren't regulated in the US as they are in other countries, meaning our exposure to them is much higher than we might realize. This can lead to a multitude of health problems such as infertility in both men and women, developmental issues, breast cancer, diabetes, and more.  She shares some of the biggest culprits containing endocrine-disrupting chemicals like plastic containers and bottles, skincare products, inorganic foods, and more. She offers tips on how to avoid them, what we can replace these products with if they're accessible to us, and how to get tested to see what toxins might be lurking in our bodies.

Dr. Trasande is the Director of the Division of Environmental Pediatrics at NYU School of Medicine and the author of Sicker, Fatter, Poorer. Throughout this conversation, he breaks down what endocrine disrupting chemicals are, where they can be found, and how they impact everything from our brain development, metabolic function, and more. Dr. Trasande also explains how our failure to enact safer, stricter policies is not only costing us incredible amounts of money, but significantly increasing our disease and disability rates in the US. Ultimately, this conversation will encourage you to re-examine the products you're using on a daily basis and empower you to make small, healthier changes (like eating organic) that can support the well-being of you and your household. Have you ever wondered about the long term effects of the toxic chemicals found in black hair care products? I decided to go more in depth with this discussion to find the reasons why and how black women are disproportionately exposed to increased levels of toxins in hair products, when compared to other groups. In order to get to the bottom of this alarming data, I decided to have an open discussion with Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Sharleen St. Surin-Lord, MD. About Dr. St. Surin-Lord: Voted Top Doctor in the D.C. Metropolitan area, Dr. St. Surin-Lord is a Board Certified Dermatologist and Assistant Professor at Howard University College of Medicine. She is also the owner of Visage Dermatology & Aesthetic Center in Largo, Maryland. Dr. St. Surin-Lord is frequently quoted in articles related to the field of dermatology with topics ranging from acne, hyperpigmentation, hair fragility, scalp health and more. She has been featured in The Huffington Post, Byrdie, Prevention, Web MD, Health Line and has a hair column called "Hair It Is" in Happi Magazine! Dr. St. Surin-Lord's level of expertise is remarkable and she truly gets candid to shed light on some of the major toxins that are found in black hair care products and how they are effecting our health at alarming rates! In this episode, we discuss: Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals to be aware of before purchasing products The link between toxins in hair products, Cancer, Fibroids and Hair Loss Treatment options for hair loss How we can fight to keep harmful products geared toward black women off the shelves I am so excited for this episode and I know that you will learn so much from Dr. Sharleen St. Surin-Lord, who is truly a gem. His research is largely responsible for having bisphenol A (BPA) removed from plastic baby bottles from the U.S. market in 2012. He has served on the editorial boards of numerous scientific journals and federal research review panels both in the United States and abroad. Dr. Fred vom Saal is a Curators' Distinguished Professor of Biology at the University of Missouri- Columbia (MU). After college he taught biology as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Somalia and after the revolution there, he also taught in Kenya and then Paris before entering graduate school. Fred has mentored numerous undergraduate and graduate students since joining the MU faculty in 1979, and has published over 240 articles and reviews on his research, which has been funded by grants from NIH, NSF, USDA, EPA, FDA and NATO, as well as a number of foundations and MU. In the mid- 1990s, he and his colleagues at MU discovered that the endocrine disrupting chemical bisphenol A (BPA) disrupted fetal development at doses thousands of times lower than had been estimated to cause no effect by the FDA and EPA. He served on the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Hormonally Active Agents in the Environment, is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and is a recipient of the Heinz Foundation Award in Environmental Science, the Upstream Award from the Jenifer Altman Foundation, the Environmental Health Hero Award from the CleanMed Association, and is a recipient of the University of Missouri Alumni Association Faculty Award. He has served on numerous editorial boards of scientific journals and federal research review panels both in the U.S. and abroad. Because his research has challenged the approaches used by regulatory agencies to assess chemical safety, he has testified about the hazards posed by environmental endocrine disrupting chemicals in numerous state legislatures, the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, and the EU Parliament, and he has been invited to lecture throughout the world. Fred, together with his wife Kathi, enjoys flying around the U.S. and Canada in their airplane, and particularly visiting their families and grandson Charlie.

Joining me in today’s show is Dr. Gabriel Smolarz. He is the medical director of obesity in US Medical Affairs at Novo Nordisk, Inc. in Plainsboro NJ. He is also Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and a practicing endocrinologist in NJ. He is board-certified in Endocrinology as well as Obesity Medicine. In the show, we discuss: What is the Endocrine system - a network of glands including ovaries, testicles, pituitary and more that regular the body’s normal healthy development, growth and functions like hunger, sex drive, etc. The Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals we’re talking about today are the chemicals throughout our environment that are interfering with the normal function of our body’s Endocrine’s normal operating system. How/Why Obesity is a chronic disease and not simply a function of “lack of will power.” How Obesity is closely tied to our genetics and is especially influenced by how our environment interact with our unique genetics How appetite regular and satiety is not truly under the control of one’s will power as many people may think — with biology in your body driving when to eat, how much to eat, etc. The delicate balance of food in the gut and sending the appropriate signaling can easily be disrupted leading to a scenario of overconsuming more calories than the body needs An explanation of how EDCs can mimic, block, or interfere with the various signaling involved in energy regulation, metabolism, etc. How EDCs are involved in multiple health conditions including but not limited to infertility, certain cancers, and diabetes Why glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity can also be blocked or interfered with as an influence by EDCs So what do we do about endocrine disrupting chemicals? Dr. Smolarz acknowledges that EDCs are everywhere, but the first step in reducing exposure is increasing awarness. Beyond that, though, he suggests: Read labels — try to avoid grocery items and food storage items, specifically plastics, that contain BPA and phthalates Be aware of which plastics are BPA-free, including those labeled as recycling 1, 2 or 4 Understand that cleaning products and personal care products can also contain EDCs Be aware of the potential pesticide impact on fruits and vegetables, buying organic when it makes sense and is an option, but also realizing that no matter whether you choose organic or not, it’s important to wash your fruits and vegetables Don’t microwave in plastics Avoid storing plastic water bottles in hot areas. Use steel/glass containers when possible. We wrap up our interview with an important discussion about the importance of a complete, respectful and personalized approach to weight management. Dr. Smolarz urges us all to change the overall narrative of the disease and speak differently about Obesity and use people-first language — people living with obesity, not obese people. He offers Hormone.org as a valuable resource for more information on Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals. I close out today’s show with an Odds & Ends ending that includes: A brief mention of my new commitment (as a result of this episode) to cleaner personal care products and why I’ve set up a new Beautycounter account here on my website A book I’m reading right now about “highly sensitive children” The most recent true-crime podcast I’m listening to while daily quarantine walks — Bear Brook There’s only one more episode to go and it’s coming up soon! Plastic, it is all around us! 40% of plastic that produced is for packaging, it is generally only single use plastic, meaning it is packaged and tossed. US shoppers use 1 plastic bag per residence per day. Shoppers in Denmark use an average of 4 plastic bags a year!! 1 million plastic beverage bottles are sold EVERY MINUTE around the world. Rarely do they get recycled. That is insanity for our environment.More cities are beginning to ban plastic bags, in hopes of creating less waste. Microplastics are showing up in our oceans, our marine life are consuming the broken down bits of plastic. They don't know the difference between food and plastic particles.Plastic is just 1 of many Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals or EDCs. They can mimic hormones and trick the body into thinking they are hormones, while blocking our natural hormones from completing their jobs! This becomes a huge problem because then we have too many hormones in our body. Endocrine Disruptors have some incredible “powers” over our hormones, cells, blood, brain, organs and digestion. They are able to increase or decrease hormone levels in our blood by affecting storage, how they are made and broken down. EDC's are able to tell the cells to die permanently! Our babies and children are extremely sensitive to EDC's as well. Have you thought about eliminating plastic in your house? One of the easiest was always taking in my grocery bags and produce bags. They are stashed in my driver side door. Best to start with one area of your home and than move on to another room. Starting small allows for less overwhelm. Dr. Katz is an Instructor at Baylor College of Medicine in The Center for Precision Environmental Health. She began her research career as a McNair Scholar at the Pennsylvania State University and earned her Ph.D. at Rutgers University where she was a Southern Regional Education Board Doctoral Scholar and a National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute Fellowship recipient. During her dissertation work, she began studying the developmental origins of health and disease and breast cancer risk. She went on to the University of Pittsburgh in the Women’s Cancer Research Center to continue studying how epigenetic mechanisms contribute to breast cancer risk with a particular focus on the protective effect of early pregnancy against breast cancer. Dr. Katz believes that there are periods during the life course where the genome becomes highly dynamic to accommodate great change such as early development, puberty, and pregnancy and has termed these times of purposeful plasticity.
