The Hard Quartet is a new four-piece composed of Stephen Malkmus, Emmett Kelly, Matt Sweeney and Jim White, each of whom boasts big bona fides and decades of output in indie rock. The band's sonically diverse self-titled debut record on Matador features the members taking turns on lead but always gelling thanks to their affinity for each other and the "social experience" of music-making. Hear Kelly and Sweeney discuss the LP and the enviable, agenda-free hang that is The Hard Quartet.

Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

This week on the show, we're pleased to present a conversation with Matt Sweeney. He's lived a truly dazzling life in music. After coming up playing with the great band Chavez, he contributed to masterworks of indie rock—including records by Cat Power and Bonnie “Prince” Billy, with whom he crafted the monumental 2005 classic Superwolf, a classic in the Aquarium Drunkard canon. He's also worked as an in-demand session player, working on recordings for the likes of Cat Stevens, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond and other legends. Is Matt the only guy to play on both a Current 93 and Dixie Chicks project? We suspect so. His new band is called The Hard Quartet, which finds him joined by Stephen Malkmus of Pavement and The Jicks, Emmett Kelly of The Cairo Gang, and Jim White of The Dirty Three.  Their self-titled debut is out this Friday, October 4th. To quote from Jennifer Kelly's Aquarium Drunkard review of their self-titled album: “The term ‘supergroup' gets thrown around a lot, and it often means nothing more than ‘these people have all been in other bands.' But the Hard Quartet is a true super group, composed of four guys who have made their mark in music.”   Sweeney's a great conversationalist, and this talk gets into the new record, the philosophy of bass playing, the band's Monkees-like identity, the return of his web series Guitar Moves and much more. Aquarium Drunkard is supported by our subscribers. Now she fully focuses on RE through coaching and public speaking, with a passion to help!Overwhelmed beginners who try their best to educate themselves through different mediums and yet don't know where or how to focus! There is no shame in that, it's just important to recognize when you need help. And, of course, a good coach can assist with that concern. How do you know it's the right coach? Elizabeth tells us how she sees a 30-minute discovery talk: as a job interview! https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/matt-sweeney (Matt Sweeney) doesn't want to dazzle you with rock guitar. That's boring. That's lazy. At least to him. He wants to mesmerize you. “Really, that's the point of music: to get people's minds off of whatever and to hypnotize them a little bit,” https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/matt-sweeney (Sweeney told PG in 2021). After beginning his Superwolves collaboration with Will Oldham, “that's when I thought, ‘Cool, I did the thing that I wanted to do. I can fingerpick now and I can play with a really great singer who is working in an idiom that I hadn't worked in before.' “I started playing with Will and that gave me the opportunity to keep developing the way that I was playing, because it went well with his singing. After a couple of years, that led to Will suggesting that we write songs together.” The audible opiate that Sweeney provides has also cast his spell over the works of Rick Rubin, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Adele, https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/cat-powers-journey (Cat Power), Run the Jewels, Chavez, John Legend, Zwan (collaboration with Billy Corgan), Tinariwen, “Cowboy” Jack Clement, https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/the-big-5/billy-gibbons (Billy Gibbons), and Margo Price. And with every episode of hypnosis comes a trance-breaking snapback. Providing that rhythmic recoil is Sweeney's current foil, https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/ty-segall-and-emmett-kelly-no-filter-frenzy (Emmett Kelly). Both have worked with Oldham, but until now—in the current Superwolves line-up—never together. Kelly steps into the fold with an indie and outsiders Rolodex filled with names like https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/ty-segall (Ty Segall), Angel Olson, Azita, Cairo Gang, Mikal Cronin, The C.I.A., Earth Girl Helen Brown, Magic Trick, Doug Paisley, and Joan of Arc. Sweeney sums up their guitar-nership with his typical, sly-and-dry snark: “What's important about the way me and Emmett play together is that we never talk about it [laughs]. It's true! He's like the best guitar player. He's a master at making everything sound better. We've both worked together—but mostly separately—with our singer Will Oldham, and it was his suggestion that we should all go out together [without bass and drums] because it should be good. But really, we've never had to talk about it, and we just play. It's been a lot of fun.” So, when PG's Chris Kies recently connected with Sweeney and Kelly, they were providing a guitar backdrop for a headlining set fronted by Bonnie “Prince” Billy Oldham at Nashville's Mercy Lounge, supporting Sweeney and Billy's 2021 release, Superwolves. While the conversation with both does cover their spartan setups, the meat of the message is how gear is a tool for storytelling, humility, and liberation. Oh … but Kelly does reveal a Japanese gem that takes a guitar signal and reanimates it into anime speech-like phrases! [Brought to you by https://ddar.io/XSE.RR (D'Addario XS Electric Strings).]

Welcome to December 9, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate the success of the underdog.  Traditional clowns wore white makeup, with red noses and cheeks, and pointy hats. During the Great Depression, a clown named Emmett Kelly changed that image. People were down on their luck and while they wanted to be entertained, the usual clown shtick didn't seem relatable. That's when Kelly's clown character, Weary Willie became a reflection of the times. Instead of the typical costume, Weary Willie looked more like a hobo. He wore a frown, had whiskers, and his clothes were torn and dirty. This underdog became iconic because people could see something of themselves in him. On Weary Willie Day, celebrate a clown who was a man of the people. Unless you're afraid of clowns, in which case, forget we said anything.  Pastry dough dates back to the ancient Mediterranean when it was rolled paper thin and baked into baklava. The Crusaders brought it to Europe where it became a versatile base for pies and pasties. But the variety of pastries we enjoy today is thanks to a French chef who mastered the technique of crafting dough into the sublime. Chef Careme grew up poor, but his career took off at age 15 when his larger than life creations reached the table of Napoleon Bonaparte. From there he served the royalty of Europe with his cream puffs, danish, quiches and tarts, and became one of the very first celebrity chefs. On National Pastry Day we celebrate this rich dessert and the kid who shaped his future with it.  I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day. 'Imagination is everything', we were once taught by a teacher of ours. And so in this episode we take up the imaginative possibilities of play and laughter, wondering together what possibilities can come from holding the 'darkness and vulnerability in the heart of everything' alongside the joyful, expansive possibilities of play. Along the way we laugh a lot, imagine what it would be to welcome the joy of others, and consider how 'authenticity' always involves some measure of playfully cultivating what's been so far marginalised or not included.  This week's Turning Towards Life is a conversation about living in the big 'and' of life rather than splitting life into opposites, hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. This is Turning Towards Life, a weekly live 30 minute conversation hosted by Thirdspace in which Justin Wise and Lizzie Winn dive deep into big questions of human living. Find us on FaceBook to watch live and join in the lively conversation on this episode. You can find videos of every episode, and more about the project on the Turning Towards Life website, and you can also watch and listen on Instagram, YouTube, and as a podcast on Apple, Google and Spotify. Here's our source for this week: Knowing Now You'll Never Be a Clown But if you were, and if your grin were painted red as a Coke can, a fire engine, red as the Tabasco sauce you spilled on your mother's carpet, and if it lifted itself from the inside of one huge ear to the other, and if your nose were a ping pong ball almost begging for a swipe, and if your feet slept within white shoes, three feet long and flapping, would you be able then to talk to everything you really want to talk to: the chickadees who come closer than your nieces, that piece of paper blown across your lawn, the rain, each nudge of green in your garden? And when you put on your coat, that U.N. of colors and scraps, that coat that would make Joseph feel he had folded himself into the pages of GQ, the one with the shoulders rolling up to your cheeks, with buttons the size of pancakes, and a hem like the border of Czechoslovakia, would you want to walk into church, quietly take your place with the choir and just as the minister finishes the benediction, honk your horn?  And when you put on your polka dotted tie, wide as a summer afternoon, would you want to pin the squirting yellow daisy on your lapel, sit in the business meeting, and after the ayes have it, squeeze the rubber bulb in your pocket?  Then again, maybe you would just stay home, listen to jazz, the blues, or some swing, open each of your cupboards and talk about Tuesday or the way the light falls across the counters, invite Lou Jacobs, Emmett Kelly, Felix Adler, Otto Griebling, hell, the whole clown alley, rent a calliope, a center ring, one elephant, and get out the pies. –Jack Ridl Photo by Rex Pickar on Unsplash

Leon Russell [00:17] "Roll Away the Stone" Leon Russell Shelter Records SHE 8901 1970 Leon with his disciples Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman, and Steve Winwood. Duke Jordan [03:26] "The Feeling of Love No. 2" Les Liaisons Dangereuses Charlie Parker Records PLP-813 1962 Music from the "scandalous" Roger Vadim interpretation of the 1782 novel of the same name. Evidently much of the film in the music was performed by Thelonius Monk. Here, Jordan is accompanied by Eddie Kahn on bass, Art Taylor on drums, Charlie Rouse on tenor sax, and Sonny Cohn on trumpet. The Beatles [06:52] "Get Back" Let It Be Apple Records AR 34001 1970 Featuring Billie Preston on keys, and John Lennon handled lead guitar because George had briefly quit the band during the well-documented recording process. Rolling Stones [10:00] "Monkey Man" Let It Bleed London Records NPS-4 1969 Hey... more Stones! And you know I love songs about monkeys. Bill Wyman plays vibes on this track as well as bass. David Bowie [15:29] "Shake It" Let's Dance EMI America SO-17093 1983 Since we've heard both of the big hits from this album in seasons 2 and 4 of Vinyl-O-Matic, I'm going with this kinda goofy track that closes the album. Marvin Gaye [19:16] "Let's Get It On" Let's Get It On Tamla T329V1 1973 When in doubt, go with the hit. And what a hit it is. Sure that initial skip ruins the mood a bit, but that groove gets right back in there! Guided by Voices [24:07] "The Unsinkable Fats Domino" Let's Go Eat the Factory Guided by Voices, Inc. GBVI 16 2012 One of the classic iterations of the band, and their very first release on Guided by Voices, Inc. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy [26:00] "I Called You Back" The Letting Go Drag City dc420 2006 A fine slow jam that closes out this mid-Aughties Will Oldham album. Recorded in Reykjavik, featuring the core lineup of brother Paul on bass, Emmett Kelly on guitar, Jim White on drums, and the always astounding Dawn McCarthy on vocals. ABC [33:14] "Poison Arrow" The Lexicon of Love Mercury SRM-1-4059 1982 A heavy rotation early 80s classic that reached number 25 on the Hot 100. Lemonheads [36:36] "Mallo Cup" Lick Taang! Records 32 1989 Not a fan of the actual Mallo Cup, but I am a fan of this song. Did you know that everyday, someone is born who has never heard Lemonheads cover Suzanne Vega's "Luka" (https://youtu.be/CW9Pv0WT2K0). The Red Clay Ramblers [38:48] "Killing Floor" A Lie of the Mind Sugar Hill Records SH-8501 1986 Music to accompany Sam Shephard's 1986 Off-Broadway play A Lie of the Mind, which featured a cast of James Gammon, Harvey Keitel, Geraldine Page, Will Patton, Amanda Plummer, Aidan Quinn, Ann Wedgeworth, and Karen Young. Leonard Cohen [40:45] "Tonight Will Be Fine" Leibestraume - Leonard Cohen singt seine schönsten Lieder CBS CBS 84718 1980 Sadly, just the original English language versions of Leonard's hits. Taurus [45:55] "Life (Part I)" Life Self Released 2012 Doomy goodness from Portland duo Stevie Floyd and Ashley Spungin in an outstanding box set featuring multicolor splatter vinyl, photographs, back patch, sticker, screen-prints in a custom box. In the early 20th century, a puppet fervor slowly crept across the America, like rust on a Chevy Nova, as travelling shows made puppeteers into full fledge celebrities, particularly the self-proclaimed “America's Puppet Master” Tony Sarg who was instrumental in creating visually appealing versions of classic children's tales and bringing to life puppets in live action and animated films. Concurrently, ventriloquism acts were breaking from music halls and vaudeville shows to find superstardom led by duos of Arthur Prince and Sailor Jimmy, the Great Lester and Frank Byron Jr., and, of course, Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy. America got wood for talking wood. The rise of radio, television, and film provided even broader platforms for puppeteers and ventriloquists to spread their infectious amusements. In a world before special effects, making inanimate objects come alive felt magical and more real than still nascent animation. It was children's television that really embraced puppets as Howdy Doody and Burr Tillstrom's Kukla and Ollie were beamed directly into the impressionable minds of the baby boomers. Lambchop lovin' Shari Lewis, sweater-clad Fred Rogers, and googly eyed Jim Henson all followed suit shortly after making themselves and their creations into international superstars. At about the same nuclear age time frame, you couldn't throw a stone without hitting a socially awkward (and probably sexually frustrated) kid unsuccessfully practicing throwing his voice with a shiny new Emmett Kelly or Mortimer Snerd dummy emulating their heroes like Jimmy Nelson, Bil Baird, and Paul Winchell. They would spend hours listening to instructional records on letter substitutions and tongue positioning. The craze permeated far and wide as even Miss America contestants chose ventriloquism for the talent portion of the show. We even got so lazy that we decided to let robots run our puppets as animatronics started popping up all over place like Disneyland, Showbiz Pizza, and Chuck E Cheese. In this episode, we are going to stare into the cold dead eyes of the dummies. We are going to explore why and how adults mimicking mannerisms into lifeless masses became the preeminent evangelical apparatus. And how things went so far off the rails. So, dim the lights and focus the spotlight. Put on your duck tail tuxedo. Tip your top hat jauntily askew. Straighten your bowtie. Stick your hand up the bottom of your favorite inanimate object and throw your voice as far it goes. Join as we walk through the uncanny valley of the dolls. Just don't let us see your lips move. In an alternate timeline, John Carpenter released his third feature film "The Babysitter Murders" in 1978. It featured a knife-wielding slasher in an Emmett Kelly hobo clown mask knocking off teenagers one by one. It gets panned by critics and quickly leaves the few theaters showing it. John Carpenter, frustrated, decides to focus on his music career. The slasher genre as we know it today ceases to exist. No Jason. No Freddy. No Scream.Luckily, Tommy Lee Wallace picked up another mask while he was out shopping, and history was made. Babysitters were no longer safe, and the slasher boom was born. It's our penultimate episode on clowns, which means we've only got a few more terrible stories to cover. In this episode, Sunshine and Alix talk about two notorious and tragic accidents, and two sad clowns associated with those events. Respectively - Joe Coyle and the Hagenbeck-Wallace train crash, and Emmett Kelly and the Hartford Circus Fire. It's time to feel bad for clowns again, but don't worry, the ride's almost over. Almost. Summary We have all heard the saying, “A Little knowledge is a dangerous thing.” When that saying is used, it means that the person with the small amount of knowledge is assuming that they know all they need to know on the subject at hand, then they act accordingly. It is not that they don’t know everything, but that they think they do, that is the “dangerous thing.” Having some knowledge, and knowing the limits of that knowledge, is a plus. For example, knowing how to dress a wound is a good thing; thinking that you can do open heart surgery with that ability is dangerous. For the next 10 minutes, we will unpack how having a little knowledge is taking a giant wrecking ball to our communities and our country. Transcript We have all heard the saying, “A Little knowledge is a dangerous thing.” When that saying is used, it means that the person with the small amount of knowledge is assuming that they know all they need to know on the subject at hand, then they act accordingly. For the next 10 minutes, we’ll unpack how having a little knowledge is taking a giant wrecking ball to our communities and our country. Let’s start with a fun, sweet story and video featuring a circus clown, Emmett Kelly, who performed in the early and mid 20th century. Kelly was a former successful trapeze artist turned clown. “Weary Willie” was Kelly’s invented, depression era-like hobo character who the delighted kids and amused the adults of his time. Kelly would be seen sweeping up the circus rings after the other performers. He tried but failed to sweep up the pool of light from the spotlight. His routine was revolutionary at the time: traditionally, clowns wore white face and performed slapstick stunts intended to make people laugh. As the circle of light, the spotlight, that Kelly was “sweeping up” got smaller, the lit circumference in contact with the dark also got smaller. The smaller the area of light in his act, the smaller the circumference where the light touched the dark. Things happen the same way with what we know and what we realize that we don’t know. The light is what we know, and the light circumference where it touches the dark represents what know that we don’t know. As things like our knowledge and wisdom expand, the area of light expands. And so does the size of the circle contacting the dark, representing what we know that we don’t know. Simply put, the more that we know, the more that we know what we don’t know. And with a little knowledge, a smaller lit circle if you will, we have little understanding of what we don’t know. That’s the danger. Today’s key points: 1. We all know what we know, and what we know that we don’t know. Vastly larger than both of those two together is the area of what we don’t know that we don’t know. And what we think we know that just ain’t so is part of what we don’t know that we don’t know. And 2. What we don’t know that we don’t know is where the danger lies. Let’s take a look at an issue that you and I and the USA are facing today (that was fun), and how the little knowledge danger makes issues like this one all but unresolvable. Socialism is often in the news, with older people generally against it, and younger people far more often being for it. The little knowledge issue raises its ugly head here because there are three different flavors of socialism, and everyone is talking about the only one, pro or con, the only flavor they know to talk about. Classic Socialism calls for government ownership of business, making it quite the opposite of capitalism. This has never worked anywhere, including Venezuela and Cuba. Russia, China and Vietnam are examples of countries where that lesso...
