At SupplySide West 2024, one of the biggest events was a panel discussion held at the Kyowa Hakko USA booth, featuring a star-studded cast of influential industry advocates: Dan Lourenço – Founder and CEO of Ghost Joey Savage – Chief Scientific Officer of Glaxon Chris Lockwood – VP of Scientific Affairs at Nutrabolt David Sandler – Scientific Consultant and COO of Jupiter Wellness The topic of the panel was The Growth of Branded Ingredients, with an initial focus on Cognizin Citicoline, an ingredient used by everyone listed above. The episode offers fresh and unique perspectives from each member, who have different reasons and purposes for various ingredients. When you're as big as these brands, you have to rely on trusted and legally compliant inputs, and few in this industry are as trusted as Kyowa Hakko! Embracing branded ingredients and collaborative competition This was a hallmark moment for the dietary supplement industry — one that we call “collaborative competition”. To put it bluntly, a panel like this simply wouldn't have happened 5+ years ago. But with a growing industry where all good players can win, and companies like PricePlow and Kyowa Hakko here to bring a network of forward-thinking industry advocates together, it's now a reality. With this, we get more information, less duplication of mistakes, and the consumer is ultimately the beneficiary. https://blog.priceplow.com/podcast/kyowa-branded-ingredients-ssw-2023 Video Version: Watch Dan, Joey, and Chris Talk Branded Ingredients https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjpmO_3nsk0 Audio Version available for download Detailed Show Notes: Embracing Branded Ingredients with Kyowa at SSW 2023 (0:00) – Introductions and Branded Ingredients (1:45) – Why use Cognizin in supplement formulations? https://blog.priceplow.com/podcast/lief-labs-supplement-manufacturing-101 Over the years, PricePlow has continually become more interested in supplement manufacturing, as it is the cornerstone basis of the entire industry. Good manufacturing quality and testing leads to safe, high-quality products for end consumer. In Episode #068, we interviewed Matt Karich of Soul Performance Nutrition, who took us through his exhaustive process of finding a high-quality manufacturer that produce supplements that would pass rigorous tests and become BSCG Certified. It turns out, the manufacturer he ended up with was none other than Lief Labs. So we began to talk more frequently with Lief Labs (and their sister subsidiary ingredient development business, Lief Raws), learning how they differentiate themselves from the rest of the supplement manufacturers out there. We've continually emphasized that dietary supplements are regulated (see Episode #100 with Dan Fabricant of the Natural Products Assocation), but what manufacturer takes these laws with the utmost seriousness? What manufacturer can provide additional services to help inexperienced operators make high-quality products? Manufacturing 101 with Meg Ligot of Lief Labs An answer to both of those questions is Lief. So we brought Meg Ligot, Senior Product Development Manager at Lief Labs, to bring us through Supplement Manufacturing 101. https://blog.priceplow.com/podcast/brent-laffey-armada-nutrition-074 Brent Laffey of Armada Nutrition — a premier contract supplement manufacturer — re-joins the PricePlow Podcast to talk about Armada's expansion. Armada is well-known for producing some of the world's most popular supplements in their highly-acclaimed Tennessee facility, but now they're expanding with an even larger facility in Salt Lake City, Utah. We bring Brent onto the show to talk about Armada's history, its other closely-related businesses (such as Prinova of the NAGASE group), supplement technologies such as blending, and the extraordinary amount of testing Armada performs on the products they produce. Then we get into the Utah expansion, which marks a major upgrade in the company's capabilities and throughput. Along the way, you'll learn about flavor technology, industry careers, and even types of dairy used in different whey proteins. This is an incredibly informative episode for any supplement user or entrepeneur, highlighting how to do things the right way — a stark difference from episode #027, where we last invited Brent on the podcast to discuss the ABH Pharma indictment / scandal. If you read the ingredient labels at the grocery store, (and you dang sure should be,) you'll often see something called natural flavoring listed. "Cool! It's healthier than artificial flavors, right?" Umm, not really. In fact, "natural flavors" are anything but natural, and can be downright disgusting! Our friends at the FDA have given food manufacturers a big loophole that enables them to throw in just about anything they want to save time and money while enhancing the flavor. Seriously, most of us wouldn't feed our pets the crap we're unknowingly stuffing in our mouths. Don't miss this episode! Links... Hello and welcome back to the Slim & Satisfied Podcast! As the new year approaches, I want to share with all of you the one diet you should consider following for 2020: The Mediterranean Diet. This diet is the one I successfully use in my practice with many of my PCOS clients. The reason I feel strongly that this is the ONE diet that's healthy across the board is that it has been proven to be highly effective in reducing disease risk and is also highly enjoyable and easy to stick with, which is a major downside of other plans. With some minor tweaks, this style of eating can truly help you reach most, if not all, your health goals in 2020! Studies have shown that a Mediterranean diet can offer incredible benefits such as improved cardiovascular health, longevity, and weight loss. I especially like this diet for PCOS weight-loss because it is designed to help reduce inflammation as well as insulin-resistance, and it can even help women with issues such as fertility, cravings and acne. So, in this episode, I offer 10 simple, easy quick ways to begin a Mediterranean diet. These include: Having fish as a source of protein 2-3 times per week Using olive oil generously, incorporating about ½ cup of olive oil into your diet each day Adopting a produce-first approach Eating 2 servings of fruit per day while making sure to portion control and pair them properly Including 1.5oz of nuts in your diet each day Focusing on whole-grains, specifically uncommon grains like farro, millet and bulgur wheat Flavoring everything with herbs, not salt Moderating alcohol consumption Eating slowly and savor your food Making lunch your biggest meal of the day I recommend starting out by incorporating 2-3 of these into your diet. If they work, you can add more, and if they don't, you can try different ones; you can pick and choose which strategies work best for you. As we've discussed in the past, lifestyle and food choices are more important than any other intervention for people with PCOS, and the success of this diet lies in how sustainable and enjoyable it can be without it feeling restrictive. Give it a shot and let me know what you think. What You'll Learn in This Episode: The history and science behind the Mediterraean diet The health benefits of a Mediterranean diet and how it can specifically help with health problems associated with PCOS 10 ways to begin a Mediterraean diet Strategies for incorporating food recommendations into your diet Why mindfulness when eating can assist with weight-loss Helpful Links: Find my “PCOS-Proof Kitchen Guide” with collected recipes at: www.dafnachazin.com/pcosplan Questions, or interested in becoming a client? Showdown Over Brexit in British ParliamentGuest: Quinn Mecham, Professor of Political Science, BYUBritish Prime Minister Boris Johnson is struggling to keep his Brexit plans on track. He's vowed to see Britain leave the European Union on October 31, no matter what. But members of Parliament are blocking his attempts –and that includes a number of his own conservative party members who've jumped ship. Getting More Women on the ForceGuest: Ivonne Roman, Police Captain, Newark, New Jersey, National institute of Justice LEADS Scholar, Cofounder of the Women's Leadership OrganizationThere's a nationwide push to add more women to the ranks of law enforcement. Currently they make up less than 13 percent of police officers in the US and an even smaller percentage of law enforcement leadership. It's not that women are less capable of policing. Study after study has shown policewomen are actually better at communicating and defusing potentially violent confrontations. So why aren't there more women on the force? The Science Behind Artificial and Natural FlavoringGuest: Gene Ahlborn, Professor of food science, toxicology, and flavor chemistry at Brigham Young UniversityWhen I see “all-natural flavors” on a food label, I imagine that means the thing is flavored only by its main ingredients. So, if it's apple juice, then it's flavored by actual apples. But that's not how flavoring works in the processed food industry. In fact, the difference between “natural” and “artificial” is not nearly as big as you'd think. Apple SeedGuest: Sam Payne, Apple SeedSam Payne shares a story about Labor Day. Diversity in the Workplace may be Easier to Solve than You ThinkGuest: Olga Stoddard, Assistant Professor of Economics at Brigham Young UniversityFortune 500 companies have more female CEOs this year than ever before -33. That's still under 7 percent, and Hispanic and black CEOs barely even make a percentage. Many companies have made promises to increase diversity among all their employees, but they're still struggling to make it happen. A team of economists has come up with a strikingly simple and cost-effective solution that doubled the number of racial minority applicants in their experiment. If Diet Apps Aren't the Answer to Childhood Obesity, What Is?Guest: Andrew Subica, assistant professor of social medicine, population, and public health at the University of California, Riverside School of MedicineOne in five children and teens in the United States have obesity. That rate has tripled since the 1970s. So, we clearly need young people to be eating better and exercising more. But Weight Watchers –now known as WW –is taking all kinds of heat for its new app aimed at kids. If a food-tracking app isn't the way to go, what is?
