Transcript [music] Welcome to Food Safety in a Minute from Washington State University Extension. Have you considered making flavored vinegars at home? They can be enjoyed in your kitchen or given as special gifts for family and friends. Safety and quality are essential when preparing them. Online recipes and photos may look appealing but always rely on research-based directions for safety and consistent results. The National Center for Home Food Preservation provides complete directions and ingredient proportions. Search for Preserving Food: Flavored Vinegars. Use only commercially prepared distilled white vinegar, apple cider vinegar, or wine and champagne vinegar. You can flavor vinegar with fruits, vegetables, herbs, or spices. Wash produce thoroughly under clean running water, peeling if needed. Get creative by threading garlic cloves, peppers, or fruit chunks onto bamboo skewers. The episode offers fresh and unique perspectives from each member, who have different reasons and purposes for various ingredients. When you're as big as these brands, you have to rely on trusted and legally compliant inputs, and few in this industry are as trusted as Kyowa Hakko! Embracing branded ingredients and collaborative competition This was a hallmark moment for the dietary supplement industry — one that we call “collaborative competition”. https://blog.priceplow.com/podcast/lief-labs-supplement-manufacturing-101 Over the years, PricePlow has continually become more interested in supplement manufacturing, as it is the cornerstone basis of the entire industry. Good manufacturing quality and testing leads to safe, high-quality products for end consumer. In Episode #068, we interviewed Matt Karich of Soul Performance Nutrition, who took us through his exhaustive process of finding a high-quality manufacturer that produce supplements that would pass rigorous tests and become BSCG Certified. It turns out, the manufacturer he ended up with was none other than Lief Labs. So we began to talk more frequently with Lief Labs (and their sister subsidiary ingredient development business, Lief Raws), learning how they differentiate themselves from the rest of the supplement manufacturers out there. We've continually emphasized that dietary supplements are regulated (see Episode #100 with Dan Fabricant of the Natural Products Assocation), but what manufacturer takes these laws with the utmost seriousness? What manufacturer can provide additional services to help inexperienced operators make high-quality products? Manufacturing 101 with Meg Ligot of Lief Labs An answer to both of those questions is Lief. So we brought Meg Ligot, Senior Product Development Manager at Lief Labs, to bring us through Supplement Manufacturing 101. It's an informative and fun episode, and does a great job showcasing how Lief does things right. We also talk a bit about Lief Raws, flashing back to their unique Biozomal Caffeine product that we covered in the past. https://blog.priceplow.com/podcast/brent-laffey-armada-nutrition-074 Brent Laffey of Armada Nutrition — a premier contract supplement manufacturer — re-joins the PricePlow Podcast to talk about Armada's expansion. Armada is well-known for producing some of the world's most popular supplements in their highly-acclaimed Tennessee facility, but now they're expanding with an even larger facility in Salt Lake City, Utah. We bring Brent onto the show to talk about Armada's history, its other closely-related businesses (such as Prinova of the NAGASE group), supplement technologies such as blending, and the extraordinary amount of testing Armada performs on the products they produce. Then we get into the Utah expansion, which marks a major upgrade in the company's capabilities and throughput. Along the way, you'll learn about flavor technology, industry careers, and even types of dairy used in different whey proteins. This is an incredibly informative episode for any supplement user or entrepeneur, highlighting how to do things the right way — a stark difference from episode #027, where we last invited Brent on the podcast to discuss the ABH Pharma indictment / scandal. On today's episode Dr. Hoby Wedler discusses the impact of the five senses on how we experience and remember the people and products we interact with. Listen in as Deborah and Hoby explore how Hoby created a unique perspective of flavors by learning to cook as a child experiencing blindness. He also shares how he uses that perspective to teach others how to create sensory experiences that are memorable while keeping an open mind to new opportunities.   Dr. Hoby Wedler is an insightful, disarming, and passionate thinker who loves to bring people together to help them see new possibilities. With the heart of a teacher, Hoby helps turn your dreams into realities. Hoby has been completely blind since birth. He is a scientist, an entrepreneur, a sensory expert, and is driven by his passion for innovative, creative, and insightful thinking. Hoby is remarkably tuned into his surroundings and has frequently chosen to walk the unbeaten paths in life over known territories. In 2016, Hoby earned his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from UC Davis. His fearlessness is infectious, and he has actively paved the way for others to join him in his quest to follow passions regardless of the challenges that lie ahead.   In 2011, Hoby founded a non-profit organization to lead annual chemistry camps for blind and visually impaired students throughout North America. In the same year, he began opening doors to the world of wine aromas by developing Tasting in the Dark, a truly blindfolded wine experience, in collaboration with the Francis Ford Coppola Winery. He has since expanded the program to a global market in a variety of industries and special projects. Over the years, Hoby has become a motivational speaker, a mentor, and an educator. He is also committed to making the world an inclusive, equitable, and accessible place for everyone.   In his work, you will find a unique trilogy between sensory awareness, scientific knowledge, and a love for sharing his insights. Welcome to Episode 16 of The Darlington Podcast! In this episode, Carson Raymond, director of major gifts, catches up with https://www.darlingtonschool.org/Today/Details/5080531 (Katy Allan ('00)), a content creator and founder of "http://www.savoringtheflavoring.com (Savoring the Flavoring)" - a food blog where Katy shares family recipes and other great content connected to the kitchen and parenthood.  Katy is a member of the Darlington Class of 2000 who is eagerly awaiting her unfortunately postponed, long overdue, highly hyped 20-year class reunion. She earned her B.A. in Journalism from Auburn University and founded the blog and corresponding Instagram account http://www.savoringtheflavoring.com (Savoring the Flavoring) (https://www.instagram.com/savoringtheflavoring/ (@savoringtheflavoring)), where she focuses on a balanced, realistic approach to nourishing her family of five, as well as regaling her audience with tales from the boymom trenches. https://www.darlingtonschool.org/Today/Details/5597524 (Complete Show Notes >>)
