The Monkey has had a creative marketing run. Rejection emails, funny posters, and an interesting Super Bowl halftime show were all a part of it. This also meant that the actual movie had a lot to live up to. Tonally, it is exactly what some might have expected. But what about those who didn't know what they were getting into? The trailers focus on the most outrageous aspects of the plot, but how it came across on screen may be surprising to some. Dark humor and graphic violence are combined with a story about family. It is over the top while also having a lighthearted quality. The marketing also include a Super Bowl halftime show and church screenings. It was all very creative, but how well did it work? There is plenty of gore in the movie, but there was also an attempt at a heartfelt story. The message came across - and in many ways it is a very dark one - but this is also the weakest part of The Monkey. The willingness of Osgood Perkins to lean into the wackier parts of the story along with some incredible performances really end up making the difference. It may be too soon to say Perkins is the best modern horror director, but it is definitely time to take him into consideration. We talk about how he stacks up next to his contemporaries and what sets him apart. We also review where this adaptation sits next to all the other King stories of the 21st century. Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay are in total control of their environments as they talk about the modern bro-sterpiece 'Den of Thieves.' Bombay starts things off by remembering the time he made the same mistake as the main character, and ruined his chance with a girl by sexting the wrong number. Then the boys head to the Federal Reserve to deliver Chinese food they left in an air duct, and then grab their notepads and try to make sense of one of the most entertaining but beguilingly convoluted heist movies. All while attempting to avoid fixating on a certain 1995 crime classic that this movie overtly cribs from. Besides the confusing plot, this flick has a lot going for it including an ultra-sleazy performance from a bloated Gerard Butler as Big Nick — who belongs in the Degen Hall of Fame. Tonally, the movie is as hard to follow as the confounding heist caper, but it's a slick love letter to Los Angeles and features some surprisingly good performances (50 Cent), and a fantastic closing shootout. Come for the cops who party with prostitutes, and stay for the perplexing British accent used by Ice Cube's kid.

Today I spoke to Blindboy Boatclub – a multi-disciplinary Irish artist and author of the recently published short story collection Topographia Hibernica, a tongue-in-cheek update to the original. Blindboy exploded onto the international scene in late 2010 with his band The Rubberbandits and segued into a weekly podcast which is a cultural phenomenon, with over 1.2 million monthly listeners. He has released three critically acclaimed short story collections and this is his latest one. I thoroughly enjoyed Topographia Hibernica and its absurd, empathetic depictions of contemporary Irish society, flora and fauna. If you're a fan of dynamic short stories with a hard & modern edge, this will appeal to you. Tonally, it's gritty, subversive, and slightly surreal, and narrows in on the way we relate to animals and the natural world in modern culture. Above all, many of the stories are funny. There was something in the energy here that reminded me of early short stories by the Scottish writer Irvine Welsh. The book is a relatively easy read – not lighthearted, but still accessible – and its thematic threads of animal kingdoms interacting with elements of contemporary mythology holds the collection together in a really coherent way.  This episode features an extremely wide-reaching conversation, dipping in and out of Irish folklore, Hiberno English, the impending collapse in global biodiversity, Hieronymus Bosch, creating art with ‘fire in your veins', and a plethora of other fascinating topics. What shines through our conversation most apparently is the remarkable breadth of Blindboy's knowledge, and the all-consuming way he approaches creative pursuits. Incredibly informed and interested in the world around him, he's an artist in the truest sense of the word. Lit with Charles loves reviews. If you enjoyed this episode, I'd be so grateful if you could leave a review of your own, and follow me on Instagram at @litwithcharles. Let's get more people listening – and reading! Books mentioned in the episode: During the episode, Blindboy talked about the Argentinian horror short story collection, The Dangers of Smoking in Bed by Mariana Enríquez (2021); Dance Move, by Wendy Erskine (2022), an eclectic collection of stories set in Belfast; A Shock, by Keith Ridgeway (2021), a subversive novel exploring the absurdity of contemporary London life; The Wounded Cormorant and Other Stories by Liam O'Flaherty (1973), a compassionate portrayal of Irish nature; and Neuromancer, by William Gibson (1984), a genre-forming cyberpunk novel. His favourite book that I've probably never heard of was Ossian's Ride, by Fred Hoyle (1951), a sci-fi detective novel, where Ireland has become a technological superpower. The best book he's read in the last 12 months was Homesick for Another World, by Ottessa Moshfegh (2017), a collection of 14 short stories, most of which were originally published in The Paris Review.  The book he would take to a Desert Island would be The Third Policeman, by Flann O'Brien (1967) a dark, surrealist murder mystery set in a village police force. Finally, a book that changed his mind is The Dead, which is the final, novella-length, story from James Joyce's collection Dubliners (1914). Lit with Charles loves reviews. This week I'm joined by Glenn Gordon Caron, the creator and showrunner of Moonlighting, to talk about that series's long-awaited arrival on streaming. We discussed the show's creation, the discovery of Bruce Willis, how he and costar Cybil Shepherd kept up with the show's trademark rapid-fire patter, the difficulty in clearing music rights (and how Moonlighting was one of the first shows to heavily incorporate pop music into the show), working with legends like Orson Welles and Stanley Donen, and so much more.  If you've never watched the show, I highly recommend checking it out on Hulu; the folks at Disney have done an amazing job restoring the episodes. A handful of highlights, if you're trying to figure out where to start: Season 1, Episode 1: The Pilot. Tonally this is a bit different from what would follow, but it's genuinely kind of wild to see Willis show up onscreen fully formed as Bruce Willis, Star in what was almost literally his first role. Season 1, Episode 2: Gunfight at the So-So Corral. Again, the show is still finding its footing, but it's a pretty good representation of the combination of smart dialogue, great casting, and clever resolutions to the onscreen mysteries. Season 2, Episode 4: The Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice. Orson Welles introduced this episode—which is structured with a mysterious intro and then two dream sequences (one dreamt by Shepherd's Maddie Hayes as a sort of MGM musical; the other by Willis's David Addison as a sort of 1940s noir)—in part because the network was terrified no one would want to watch a black-and-white episode of TV. Season 2, Episode 18: Camille. Whoopi Goldberg and Judd Nelson co-starred, and their mystery is all well and good, but it's the closing sequence in which the (fourth) walls of reality come crashing in on the cast that makes this second season finale a must-watch. Season 3, Episode 6: Big Man on Mulberry Street. The mid-show dance sequence was done by Stanley Donen, and, again, I just can't imagine what it was like to have this sequence pop up in the middle of network TV in the 1980s. Wild stuff. Season 3, Episode 10: Poltergeist III — Dipesto Nothing. One of the show's episodes focusing on the adventures of Ms. Dipesto (Allyce Beasley) and Mr. Viola (Curtis Armstrong), who make for a delightful pairing. Season 4, Episode 2: Come Back Little Shiksa. Shepherd had to leave the show for a while due to her pregnancy, which led to a series of episodes that separated her and Willis. But the creators used some clever ways to get them in the same room. Plus: John Goodman's in this one!

“Wednesday, for us, from concept until now, has been a three and a half year journey,” said Alfred Gough. “We came up with the initial idea which was teenage Wednesday Addams in boarding school. We had to track down the rights and then we pitched it to the Addams Foundation.” As screenwriters, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are known for Shanghai Noon, Smallville, I Am Number Four, Spider-Man 2 (2004), and Into the Badlands. Their latest creation is perhaps most similar to the creation of Smallville, the Superman origin series. Listen to our conversation about Into the Badlands in Episode 52. Miles Millar said, “Tonally, this is in the pocket of Smallville. Often times, the studio comes to you, but this time, it was our idea. We put together a 15-page series treatment with photographs, descriptions, log lines for episodes, and that led to a meeting. We had to do the legwork, write the spec treatment, but we felt passionate about the project and fell in love with the idea of doing this.” “From there, we wrote the first episode, that's when the pandemic hit. We sent the pilot script to Tim Burton's agent, even though his agent said he's never been interested in television,” he continued, “but the agent liked it and sent it to Tim. Four days later, we got a call, he loved it and wanted to meet.” Tim Burton told Alfred Gough and Miles Millar that he “loved the script” and “would have dated Wednesday Addams in high school.” They shot the series in Romania about a year later. Tonally relevant: Godzilla Strategies. It's a problem when people think that a superintelligent AI will be just a volitionless tool that will do as told. But it's also a problem when people focus overly much on the story of "agency". When they imagine that all of the problems come from the AI "wanting" things, "thinking" things, and consequentializing all over the place about it. If only we could make it more of a volitionless tool! Then all of our problems would be solved. Because the problem is the AI using its power in clever ways with the deliberate intent to hurt us, right? This, I feel, fails entirely to appreciate the sheer power of optimization, and how even the slightest failure to aim it properly, the slightest leakage of its energy in the wrong direction, for the briefest of moments, will be sufficient to wash us all away. The problem isn't making a superintelligent system that wouldn't positively want to kill us. Accidentally killing us all is a natural property of superintelligence. The problem is making an AI that will deliberately spend a lot of effort on ensuring it's not killing us. I find planet-destroying Death Rays to be a good analogy. Think the Death Star. Think Imagine that you're an engineer employed by an... eccentric fellow. The guy has a volcano lair, weird aesthetic tastes, and a tendency to put words like "world" and "domination" one after another. You know the type. One of his latest schemes is to blow up Jupiter. To that end, he'd had excavated a giant cavern underneath his volcano lair, dug a long cylindrical tunnel from that cavern to the surface, and ordered your team to build a beam weapon in that cavern and shoot it through the tunnel at Jupiter. You're getting paid literal tons of money, so you don't complain (except about the payment logistics). You have a pretty good idea of how to do that project, too. There are these weird crystal things your team found lying around. If you poke one in a particular way, it releases a narrow energy beam which blows up anything it touches. The power of the beam scales superexponentially with the strength of the poke; you're pretty sure shooting one with a rifle will do the Jupiter-vanishing trick. There's just one problem: aim. You can never quite predict which part of the crystal will emit the beam. It depends on where you poke it, but also on how hard you poke, with seemingly random results. And your employer is insistent that the Death Ray be fired from the cavern through the tunnel, not from space where it's less likely to hit important things, or something practical like that. If you say that can't be done, your employer will just replace you with someone less... pessimistic. So, here's your problem. How do you build a machine that uses one or more of these crystals in such a way that they fire a Death Ray through the tunnel at Jupiter, without hitting Earth and killing everyone? You experiment with the crystals at non-Earth-destroying settings, trying to figure out how the beam is directed. You make a fair amount of progress! You're able to predict the beam's direction at the next power setting with 97% confidence! When you fire it with Jupiter-destroying power, that slight margin of error causes the beam to be slightly misdirected. It grazes the tunnel, exploding Earth and killing everyone. You fire the Death Ray at a lower, non-Earth-destroying setting that you know how to aim. It hits Jupiter but fails to destroy it. Your employer is disappointed, and tells you to try again. You line the cavern's walls and the tunnel with really good protective shielding. The Death Ray grazes the tunnel, blows past the shielding, and kills everyone. Yo...

The Batman takes Bruce Wayne very seriously and chooses "gritty" or "grounded" approach to his characterization. While Rage and Honor was a bit of a disappointment for its under utilized shenanigans, the sequel manages to go all in. Its not that they turned the amps to 11 because this feels like its own standalone piece that's unrelated in all ways to its predecessor. Tonally different and chock full of nanners, this is an absolute blast from start to finish. It starts with Cynthia Rothrock smashing her co-workers balls and ends with Patrick Muldoon falling off a crane in comedic fashion and never lets off the gas throughout. While its high nanners, its also a hell of a riffer. This is a great Sunday with the buds movie as the "plot" is paper thin and so requires little attention. When you're not lampooning the film, the film lampoons itself for you. Its like a metronome was running throughout because this thing is on beat. Its tempo is perfect and not a dry second exists. Rage and Honor 2 is likely Rothrock's best film and belongs on anyone's Year in Review list. Its top notch and shouldn't be missed by any of our fans and their friends.

Regardless, she must run the TV show successfully without losing her mind.Created by Tina Fey, it's based on her experiences as head writer for Saturday Night Live. It takes place behind the scenes of a fictional live sketch comedy show depicted as airing on NBC.The series' name refers to 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City, the address of the now Comcast Building, where the NBC Studios are located. The series stars Fey with a supporting cast that includes Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan and Jane Krakowski.Tonally, it uses surreal humour to parody the complex corporate structure of NBC and its then parent company General Electric and has been described as adopting the manic pacing of a live-action cartoon and has been influential in its extensive use of cutaways. It also became known for its dedication to making sets extremely elaborate, once showing a set that took three days to build for only six seconds.Written by Tina FeyProduced by Jeff Richmond & Jerry KupferDirected By Adam BernsteinA Broadway Video / Little Stranger Inc production for NBC Universal.30 Rock is available here: https://bit.ly/3BJeqvL The Comedy Slab Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spreaker, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, Spotify and Youtube. Subscribe for a new episode each Tuesday. Get in touch - we're @ComedySlab on Twitter and ComedySlab on Facebook.

This week the boys chat about their peripheral interest in the Winter Olympics and their excitement about what's potentially going down in AEW* before getting into a discussion on Spiral, the film adaptation of Junji Ito's manga, Uzumaki.  Skip ahead to 17:48 to avoid all the rasslin' talk and get straight to the discussion of madness brought about by geometric patterns. Written and filmed before the manga was complete, Spiral has too much in common with Dragon Ball Z, which similarly spun its wheels while waiting for the source material to catch up. Tonally weird, narratively disjointed, and very 2000s, Spiral nonetheless does conjure up some pretty creepy atmosphere and allusions to inescapable fate in ways that remind viewers of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Pulse and also Lovecraft's work.  Check out The Cast of Cthulhu on Facebook or Twitter and email any questions or comments to moviesofmadness@gmail.com.

I hope I was able to prove I'm more handy than the average podcast. Welcome back! Our first game of 2022 is going to be Wandersong, the indie adventure game that refused to just be an indie adventure game. In this game, you play a Bard who is clued in to the forthcoming apocalypse and sets out on an adventure to save the world. Carried by an immutable (literally and figuratively) enthusiasm, the Bard overcomes obstacles using a combination of song and some light platforming mechanics. Tonally, this game is delightful, with the bard meeting all comers with a positive attitude and a desire to make peace over all else. It's a great way to express the game's philosophy in a way that manages to be heartfelt and funny while feeling appropriately storybook even if it's a bit on the nose. Mechanically, it's more of a mixed bag. If you want to see a developer really try everything, this could be the perfect game for you, and you certainly will never get tired of any one thing. However, you can see a bit of a lack of polish across the game's many unique mechanics and challenges, although you'll never engage with one of them for more than a few minutes at a time. Put together, this is a game worth giving a shot to if you're looking for something colorful that isn't afraid to experiment. We're going to be talking about focusing your game on a musician and what that means both in presentation and in mechanics, how a simple narrative can work well when you're priority is getting across an emotion, and we determine whether this game's McGuffin is better or worse than the Triforce. Thank you for listening to the podcast this week (and this year)! We should be back to releasing more regularly from here on out, but it was nice to have a bit of extra time on this game for the sake of our other responsibilities over the holidays. Let us know what you think of this game in the comments or over on our Discord. Were the rapidly shifting mechanics and simple story a bit too hard for you to take seriously, or did they come off as amusing, entertaining or just a novel experiment? Next time, we're going to be talking about Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight to coincide with our main episode on Metroid: Dread, so get your Metroidvania brain in gear because we're going to be lookin' at maps for the rest of the month.

From there, we learn Star City has implemented a zero tolerance policy on all vigilantism. https://www.cbr.com/arrow-season-7-trailer-sdcc/ SDCC: Arrow Cast & Crew Declassify Season 7 (Date: 21 July 2018) Highlights from the SDCC panel “The good thing is Roy is coming back,” Haynes shared. “He's not the same person. It's going to be very, very interesting. That's all I can say. Beth did — she's a genius, so she wrote me a version of the character that just was so special. It's going to be hard for me to do, but I'm going to be happy to do it. I'm so excited to come back.” As to the crossover, Schwartz said, “We're still working on the first half of the season, so we haven't gotten to the crossover.” Amell: “The coolest thing about the premiere for me is… there's nothing about him that's heroic at all. If you're a fan of the character and you root for the character, I really hope the premiere pisses you off,” he added. “I really enjoy it. There's one scene in particular in the premiere where what Oliver does is reprehensible.” A young fan asked if Oliver and Felicity would ever have a child of their own. “No babies this year!” Schwartz said, ending the panel. https://www.cbr.com/sdcc-2018-arrow-season-7/ 'Arrow' Episode 702 Title Revealed As "The Longbow Hunters" (Date: 23 July 2018) Arrow's sixth season finale introduced The Longbow Hunters to the Arrowverse and now it sounds like the group of villains will take center stage in the second episode of the show's seventh season. Showrunner Beth Schwartz revealed the title of the episode in a photo shared to Twitter today revealing that the episode is titled "The Longbow Hunters". http://comicbook.com/dc/2018/07/24/arrow-season-7-episode-two-title-the-longbow-hunters/ Arrow Casts a New Age of DC Heroes Character for Season 7 (Date: 21 July 2018) The CW announced at Comic-Con International that Silencer will be joining the cast of Arrow as a member of the previously teased team of Longbow Hunters, a trio of villains described as “more lethal than any the team has faced.” Silencer, along with Red Dart and Kodiak, will gather at the behest of Ricardo Diaz (Kirk Acevedo) in an attempt by Season 6's big villain to take out Oliver Queen and his team once and for all. Played by Miranda Edwards (The Magicians, Orphan Black) Silencer is described as “a master of stealth,” which, depending on how close the character hews to her comic book incarnation, may be a massive understatement. https://www.cbr.com/arrow-casts-new-age-of-dc-heroes-silencer-season-7/ GENERAL DC NEWS:   Legends of Tomorrow Turn Monster Hunters in SDCC Trailer (Date: 21 July 2018) Legends of Tomorrow Season 4 will see the team taking on “Fugitives,” which are legendary creatures wreaking havoc on time following the defeat of Mallus in Season 3. Actors Courtney Ford (Nora Darhk), Matt Ryan (John Constantine) and Jes Macallan (Ava Sharpe) will become series regulars. https://www.cbr.com/legends-of-tomorrow-season-4-trailer-sdcc/ 'Legends of Tomorrow': Maisie Richardson-Sellers' Role in Season 4 Revealed (Date: 21 July 2018) Maisie Richardson-Sellers will be playing an entirely new role in Season 4. Richardson-Sellers will return as a new character named Charlie. Charlie is British, and described as a "rebel without a cause" with ties to the mysterious portal of magic that the Legends opened. Apparently, the Legends stumble upon her and are unsure if she's a friend or foe. Either way, she will definitely shake up the ship again. http://comicbook.com/dc/2018/07/22/legends-of-tomorrow-season-4-maisie-richardson-sellers-amaya-charlie/ Rip Hunter Won't Return in 'Legends of Tomorrow' Season 4 (Date: 23 July 2018) Arrowverse executive producer Marc Guggenheim has already left the door open, stating that Rip could indeed return... someday: “We love Arthur, we love having Arthur on the show, and I think Arthur enjoys being on the show. Because it's a time travel show, and because we never saw a body, anything is possible. I think Arthur is totally willing to come back and play with us if we have a cool idea.” http://comicbook.com/dc/2018/07/23/legends-tomorrow-season-4-rip-hunter-not-returning-arthur-darvill/   Why Legends of Tomorrow Isn't Part of This Year's Arrowverse Crossover (Date: 23 July 2018) Executive producer Keto Shimizu explained, “Tonally, we are so different from those other shows at this point, it's hard to jump back into that world with the other Arrowverse shows. And we did it last year and it was of course this gargantuan production and pre-production. For four shows to do that again and to try and make it bigger than last time, I just don't think it's possible. I think the crossovers are going to be a lot different in general than what we've seen.” https://www.cbr.com/why-legends-tomorrow-isnt-part-arrowverse-crossover/ Legends of Tomorrow Welcomes an All-Star Squadron Member in Season 4 (Date: 21 July 2018) Alaska You is the first to join the show. Played by Ramona Young, the character is described as a “typical twenty something” who will eventually become a “kickass superhero.” The second hero is actually related to an existing Legend; Hank Heywood, Nate's father, will have a recurring role throughout the season. Played by Tom Wilson, the character's description doesn't mention any superpowers. https://www.cbr.com/legends-of-tomorrow-all-star-squadron-member-season-4-commander-steel/   NEXT EPISODE   Link to Promo: (Date: 12 Feb 2018) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOa0EEAcdXM   Episode: “Here I Go Again” [Season 3 Episode 11] Air Date: Monday, February 19, 2018 Summary: Zari finds her place on the team when she gets caught in a time loop that results in the Waverider blowing up over and over again. “I’d buy that for a dollar!” Despite 30 years of time passing,  Robocop  has satire that’s pretty on point. The innocuous entertainment. Tonally disproportionate news items. Commercials that hawk consumer products that do nothing for their customers. All of it speaks to the world we currently live in. Luckily, Paul Verhoeven manages to slip in […]

Hell or High Water is a 2016 film written by Taylor Sheridan and directed by David McKenzie. Set in blistering rural Texas, it focusses on two brothers, played by Chris Pine and Ben Foster, who rob banks, and a cop on the verge of retirement who is chasing them, played by Jeff Bridges. There’s action, there’s tension, there’s laughs. Tonally, the film carries itself with a particular relaxed, laid-back nature that seems to befit the type of life present in small-town Texas. What makes this tone so much more appealing is how well it complements the more intense moments of the film, of which there are plenty, with much of the film’s runtime being taken up by bank heists, car chases and shootouts, and more. Adding to the fun of the plot is a real sense of humour which shows up not just in the banter of the various main characters but also in the dialogue of the various minor or incidental characters that pop up, including a very memorably dismissive elderly waitress in a steakhouse. The film explores some interesting themes relating to poverty and capitalism, and the central premise of the brothers stealing from the banks that are stealing from them is an irony that serves the film quite well. Unfortunately, it’s an irony that is too often stated rather overexplicitly, meaning the way that the issues are treated is too on the nose to have proper weight. I would have preferred to see a more subtle approach to dealing the social commentary, an approach that can in fact be seen in the film, particularly in the ways that it raises certain moral questions, but it’s an approach which is obscured by the numerous bits of dialogue that make it painfully obvious. Likewise, the soundtrack seems piled on a bit too high. For some reason the filmmakers felt it necessary to add songs underneath every second scene until there was little room for anything else to tell the story. It’s a pity because there’s an absolutely fantastic central score done by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis which truly gives us a feel for the setting and works with the visuals to create an interesting mood. It’s just not given much breathing space because of how overstuffed the rest of the soundtrack is. Clever but not quite clever enough, if nothing else this film is a lot of fun and is definitely better than your average crime drama. Hell or High Water opens October the 27th.
