Monday, October 24th, 2022, a school shooter killed a teacher and a student in St. Louis, Missouri. After the shooting, a letter was found in the gunman's car. This episode does not focus on the shooting itself but on what educators and individuals working with students can do to ensure care for the pupils in their charge—Odham shares inspiring and practical advice. Odham, the host of the Change Starts Here podcast, discusses how he sets daily intentions every morning. He recommends that before your day begins, take a few moments and visualize who and how you're going to interact with people. Further, he suggests, “Also, visualize what your attitude is going to be like when the people you're not expecting come into your life that day. And how you're going to love and serve them.” Odham describes how to track the people in your care and why that's important for ensuring no one falls through the cracks. He discusses how people receive love differently and refers to the book and theory of the Five Love Languages. Odham reviews his mission statement. Last year, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority suspended Ecsponent Financial Services for breaches of financial sector laws following complaints about how the company had marketed the preference shares of JSE-listed Ecsponent limited to potential investors. Independent financial advisor Magnus Heystek, of Brenthurst Wealth Management, was among those who signalled that returns seemed to good to be true. Many pensioners were sucked into the investments, only to find themselves in dire straits when Ecsponent defaulted on payouts to preference shareholders. Ecsponent is still listed on the Johannesburg stock exchange, but it has changed its name to Afristrat. Ecsponent or Afristat is part of a global network of companies, including a company called MyBucks. This week the Bank of Zambia ordered a Zimbabwean entrepreneur George Manyere to exit MyBucks Zambia after violating banking rules. Kimberly was most recently the Managing Director of Secondary Education at KIPP DC. She worked closely with Turnaround for Children to ensure all schools at KIPP DC redesigned their systems to improve the student experience. Additionally, Kimberly developed network policies and procedures, supported special education, and oversaw the professional development track for upcoming school leaders. Kimberly also served as a turnaround school leader for a year at AIM Academy, KIPP DC.  There, she was instrumental in stabilizing the school and creating a culture of identity and academic achievement. The middle school grew 10 points on DC's Public Charter Performance Metrics, almost reaching Tier 1 (highest distinction) status in one year of a turnaround. Before KIPP DC, Kimberly was the founding principal for Muchin College Prep, a campus of Noble Network. Muchin has consistently ranked as a Tier 1+ High School and since its inception has ranked among the highest performing non-selective schools in Chicago.
