We wrap up this little run of Disney documentaries with what may be the best one our hosts have seen - WAKING SLEEPING BEAUTY. An insiders look at the rise of the renaissance through the release of The Lion King, this doc features some names and faces that will be very familiar to any longtime listeners and especially fans of some of our history-focused Minnie Mouse-isodes. And while you may have heard our takes on this era of Disney, this film gives the perspective of the animators and other creatives active at the studio at the time - the little guys whose lives were at the mercy of the whims of a couple of Hollywood executives named Mikey and Jeffy, who came bursting in the door with big personalities and even bigger egos.
Did the Diamond in the Rough, Waking Sleeping Beauty, keep us entertained? What about the revival of Disney animation was surprising? What movie is the pinnacle of the Disney renaissance? This week we discuss Don Hahn's 2018 documentary "Howard". This documentary screened at the Tribeca Film Festival that year and we were lucky enough to see it. How similar is this to "Waking Sleeping Beauty"? Does this style of documentary work? How do we feel about people protecting Howard Ashman's privacy all of these years later? All of that and more this week on Monoreel Radio. Icons are a dime a dozen here at Aural Fixation (that's what we do... it's what we live for) but heroes are a different kettle of sea-witch – and they don't get more queer-oic than Howard Ashman. For better and for worse, the animated motion pictures produced by the Walt Disney Animation Studios have profoundly shaped the media consumed by children since 1928. Like any entertainment behemoth, quality and fortune has ebbed and flowed, but it was the sheer and singular talent of one queer man who steered Disney’s legacy from their lowest trough to their highest peak. Through a kaleidoscope of Broadway magic and animation mastery, Howard's indelible fingerprints on The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin now reveal, in adulthood, tropes of the queer experience we can all understand. The ostracisation of the 'other'... turning that otherness into a superpower... and wanting to be part of that world. To help us navigate Howard's legacy across mermaids, beasts and magic carpets, we're joined by Daniel Lammin, a theatre director, writer and producer of Ink + Paint, a joyous podcast deep-dive into Disney's animation history. We also want to acknowledge Don Hahn, the producer of The Lion King and Hunchback of Notre Dame, who created the two documentaries that have revived the current interest in Howard and his work – Waking Sleeping Beauty (2010) and Howard (2018). Movie Meltdown - Episode 521 The geek activities check-in continues as we virtually visit with Sam Drog and see what he's been up to and what he's been watching in these unusual times. And as we realize most of what we say qualifies as a headline for Weekly World News, we also mention… The Black Hole, Train to Busan, The Lost Boys, The Girl with All the Gifts, Goonies Kool-Aid, Scandalous: The Untold Story of the National Enquirer, Crank, bubble gum, Waking Sleeping Beauty, Joel Schumacher, Titan A.E., Minecraft, Bo Welch, Late Phases, the same obsession, Jim Mickle, this requiem for disaster that's going on throughout the entire movie, the unspoken demon that haunts every project, young Tim Burton, over-hyperly art directed, organic in the storytelling, name your parasites, they don't make people like that in kid movies anymore, baroque, punk, biological possession, some families hold together… because they never see each other, it doesn’t all have to be Russian novels, Lance Guest, tabloid journalism, it’s kind of like overdosing on morphine, Mike Mendez, being a social pariah, Kids Beat, that moody John Barry music, revisiting how big the thing blew up and how gross the kills were, if there was just some way... that we could monetize all that crap in your head, the TV weatherman looking like a philosopher, The Abandoned, style-shading animation, the national historical plaque… for Freejack, I can just do some cardio and eat all day, wade into the cesspool, John Carpenter, the unstoppable tides of life, we’re freakin’ out the straits, Lego, I am so invested… in this rat person movie, a rogue named Don Bluth, there was a signal… underneath the signal, Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, Best Week Ever and someone did politely save my life. Spoiler Alert: Some generally referenced spoilery plot points in Train to Busan and The Girl with All the Gifts… but it’s things you probably already could tell were going to happen anyway. “Movies are a maddening rabbit hole, and you will never escape their grasp.”

Disney+ has been up and running for two months now and everything is broken! Well maybe not everything, but if you have a Samsung Smart TV built in 2016 or earlier, UHD or not, forget your ability to use a convenient little app to access your new favorite platform. Sorry my Parliament Pals, the UK won't be able to scope out a single one of the 7,500 titles until March 2020. The Mandalorian is walking away with the title for raddest show of the year, but let's not forget the Imagineering Story featuring the one and the only, Bob Gurr! But with all this, and Forky from Pixar's Toy Story handing down life lessons, Disney Plus couldn't keep the identity thieves away for long. Allegedly, thousands of user accounts were hacked in the early hours of the platform's release. That said, it was a Washington Post article - meaning sources are scarce and writer credentials unclear. All things considered, Bob Iger's Disney+ is leading to more binge-worthy evenings of show watchin' and dare we say, we're not mad at that! The Kingdom Cable covers everything from the new Solar Farm in Orlando on the Disney World property, to the new Disney Store within a store model - view-able at a Target Store near you. Disneyland Cast Members can have bushy beards, flashy performance eye wear and long, daringly dangly earrings! Scar talks about French Fry rock formations in Tomorrowland, his harrowing escape when the Rocket Rods flung him into the foliage below back in the early turn o' the millennium, and the type of weapon he'd use if he were a ghost hunter. Star Wars Fans! Didn't you all love the Star Wars Christmas Special featuring Life Day? No? Very funny, of course you did. Well, some of the production cats involved in that feat of creative majesty helped with Mandalorian - so you know it's good. Baby Yoda can be found chugging soup and having some laughs, all while a guy that looks like Boba Fett risks it all to slay an angry old galactic rhino. It's no Solo, but we'll use it to tie us over in the meantime. The full Simpson's catalog can be found, albeit with a wonky aspect ratio. Coincidence? Maybe, but I believe the padding and polishing chiefs are working those kinks out as we speak to smooth things over with disgruntled fans everywhere. Big fan of puppets? Miss that Jim Henson touch? Had Don Hahn just produced Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King he’d have earned a place in movie history—and our hearts. But over several decades he’s done so much more: writing books (like Before Ever After and Yesterday’s Tomorrow: Disney’s Magical Mid-Century), directing documentaries (like Waking Sleeping Beauty) and keeping Disney history alive. Not bad for a guy who started out as a messenger on the Burbank studio lot. Don is self-deprecating and funny but his love for Disney is true-blue, as Leonard and Jessie can attest.

The UNTOLD, UNCUT story of Disney's struggles during their so-called Dark Age....and if you believe that, I've got some waterfront property in Kansas you might be interested in. We take a dive into documentaries and talk about what it means to tell a supposedly nonfiction narrative. Whose voice gets heard? What facts do you spin? What do you do to make Disney happy, when they have the power to shut you out completely? And the most important question of all: CAN you believe this shit? The field is rather divided on that one. By the mid-1980s, the fabled animation studios of Walt Disney had fallen on hard times. The artists were polarized between newcomers hungry to innovate and old timers not yet ready to relinquish control. These conditions produced a series of box-office flops and pessimistic forecasts: maybe the best days of animation were over. Maybe the public didn't care. Only a miracle or a magic spell could produce a happy ending. A miracle man named Howard Ashman regained Disney’s magic with a staggering output of musical hits - "Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast," and "Aladdin." This is a short tribute to the man that changed the face of Disney animation as we know it today. Listen to all the wonderful raw audio of original ideas and songs pitched during the animation process. Howard’s time at the Disney studios has been called by animators as “Waking Sleeping Beauty.”

On December 17, PBS SoCal will air the musical special Richard M. Sherman: Songs of a Lifetime. It's a one-hour studio performance by the songwriter and Disney Legend. Just him, a piano, and a few friends to sing along. It celebrates the decades-long musical collaboration that was the Sherman Brothers and it's certain to include tunes from such classic Disney and non-Disney films like Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and so many others. Richard M. Sherman: Songs of a Lifetime is produced by Tim's guest today, a gentleman who's also made significant contributions to the Disney legacy. Don Hahn's producer and executive producer credits include Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, The Emperor's New Groove, Waking Sleeping Beauty, Frankenweenie, Maleficent, and the Disneynature films Oceans and African Cats. Don is a respected author, whose latest book, Before Ever After, recounts in exquisite detail the history of the artists' training program at the Walt Disney Studios in the 1930s and ‘40s. Don is also a tireless supporter of preserving animation and film history. You know, someone should probably give him an award for that. Don Hahn is Tim's guest today in The Mouse Castle Lounge. In the late 80's and into the 90's, the Walt Disney Company was in a downward spiral. The company was being torn between the thinking of Walt's nine old men and the new generation of animators with fresh ideas. A series of takeover threats and mutiny left the company's future in serious doubt . In a bold move, Roy Disney hired Michael Eisner and Frank Wells to turn things around and save the Walt Disney Company. These two men, along with several others, led a cut throat culture of greed, jealousy and envy, which would be known as the Disney Renaissance. With the help of the documentary Waking Sleeping Beauty, Nick and Dave tell the story of one of the greatest turnarounds in Disney history through the eyes of the men involved.******************************************************************************Have an idea, question, or want to share your experiences with Nick and Dave on the show?Contact us:mousecapadespodcast@gmail.com(407)674-0414Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Periscope.
