As part of the Marathon Academy, Vanessa enjoyed the structure and connections with other community members. In this episode we discuss some of the challenges runners can face post-partum, but also why your potential as a runner doesn't need to go out the window after having kids! Erin Van Schyndle is a Postpartum Run Coach and Personal Trainer. She has been working in prenatal and postpartum fitness for 14 years and is a UESCA certified run coach. She has run everything from 5ks to marathons and 70.3 triathlon distances. Erin became passionate about helping postpartum runners after her own postpartum running experience was anything but easy. It seemed like any time she got some momentum, she would get injured, sick, or burnt out. She finally reached out to a physical therapist and run coach who specifically worked with postpartum women. It was a complete game changer. After Erin had such a great experience with a coach, she got her run coaching certification and took additional training on postpartum running. She loves helping other postpartum runners get back to the sport they love. She has also had her experience as a triathlete completing many Sprint and Olympic distance triathlons along with a half Ironman. Her motivation has allowed her to self-coach herself to PRs after reading multiple running books before finally deciding to get her RRCA running coach certification in 2021, to be able to help other runners improve their running and find the thrill as well. Her current PRs are a 19:32 5K, 1:30 half marathon, and 3:13 marathon. She has her own run coaching business Running with Roses and also assists with run coaching for Running Explained. Jessie B. Gruca is a Boston Qualifying runner who is on a journey to complete a marathon in all 50 states began to visit friends and travel. Since beginning she has completed 24 marathons (in 22 states) along with multiple 5Ks, 10Ks, and half marathons. She has also had her experience as a triathlete completing many Sprint and Olympic distance triathlons along with a half ironman. Her motivation has allowed her to self-coached herself to PRs after reading multiple running books before finally deciding to get her RRCA running coach certification in 2021, to be able to help other runners improve their running and find the thrill as well. Her current PRs are a 19:32 5K, 1:30 half marathon, and 3:13 marathon. Jessie's coaching philosophy is to make running fun while working hard to reach our goals! A lot goes into having a good training block including building up the aerobic base through easy running but also including speed work and longer runs based on the race distance, goals, and experience. To be a well-rounded runner, she values the importance of also including strength training and mobility work to improve performance and as a way to prehab to help avoid potential injuries. She can relate to having fully scheduled days and limited time to help provide ways to fit running into our lives in an enjoyable way while giving feedback and support throughout training. Not having left the Metro Detroit area in Michigan all of her life, she received her Bachelor's (2011) and Master's (2012) in Civil Engineering at the University of Michigan and works as a Transmission Line Engineer at a Utility company. She is married to a Physical Therapist who runs his own clinic, a mom of two kids (boy and girl), and has a dog who joins her on a lot of her runs. Outside of running, working, and trying to stay on top of the family activities, she likes cozying up to read a book or watch TV shows, all things Disney, traveling, getting ice cream, and spending time with friends and family. While there are many different ways to train, there are a bunch of "running rules" that are widely held as gospel. Concepts like following strict-polarized training (i.e., take your easy days easy and your hard days hard) and the utmost importance of the long run for marathoners are widely promoted as "the right way to train" to train. Are these dogmas 100% true? Or is the best way to train actually more grey than it is black and white? We're heading to the state of Washington to talk with Lisa Cabiles. The start of her running journey coincided with a severe digestive issue that left her at 100lbs. Once resolved, she found her inner beast and has 15+ Boston Qualifying times to her resume including qualifying on her very first marathon. She was also one of twelve runners chosen to train under Ryan Hall one season. She's now found her second wind in trail running and the ultra marathon scene and just completed her first 100 mile race on June 26, 2021. Its been a long run journey for her and has accomplished this while also trying to salvage relationships in her personal life. When you are chasing a time standard at the limit of what you are capable of, it will be hard. Someone will rarely get it on their first try, and if they do, then that time standard was that close to their limit of potential. It took about 6 years, 28 marathons, and a couple major setbacks to do it, but she did, and the best part of the experience is that she gets to set the example for her girls on how to persevere. Hawaii Race Recap- My 50th State Marathon

In this long awaited episode we recap the Revel Kulia Marathon on the Big Island of Hawaii, the final race in my quest to run a marathon in every state. This happened to be my fastest marathon to date with a finish of 3:19:55 (20 minutes under my Boston Qualifying time)! Plus in this episode you will also hear practical tips on how you can run a PR (personal record) this year. Revel Kulia Marathon Race Recap The 2nd annual Revel Kulia Marathon was held on January 18, 2020 at Waikoloa, Hawaii.Pre Race: The race sent out frequent updates and information. The expo was located on the Hilton Waikoloa Village property on Friday from 11am-7pm and was easy to navigate and mostly well organized. There was a moment of panic when the volunteer couldn’t find my race bib. But upon closer inspection it was located and I was number 1234. They also put your name on the bib and offered athlete tracking. Along with the short sleeve tech shirt they gave out an insulated beer/wine tumbler and some misc products in the swag bag. They had a couple of props set up for taking pictures. We met up with Natalie (my MetPro Coach), Tamana and her friend Suma from Cleveland, along with Wayne and Sherrie from Alberta.Race Morning: The race bused participants from the Hilton Waikoloa Resort and the Queen’s Marketplace to the start times. The marathon buses left between 4-5am since it was nearly an hour drive to the start and the half marathon buses left between 4:30-5:30 since it was about 30 minutes to the start. The marathon start area was set up off to the side of the road and consisted of a couple tables of water and sports drink, a bank of port-a-pots, music and speaker system, some site lights, the gear check truck, and the starting line set up a ways up the road. The wind made it feel rather chilly although the temps were around mid-50’s. Fortunately the race gave out gloves and heat sheet blankets and that helped a lot. I had a throw away jacket as well. We stood around talking, using the bathrooms, listened to the announcements, and then around 6:15am they directed us to walk up the road to get behind the start line. There was the usual nervous chatter and people shuffling around to try and stay warm. At 6:30am they did a countdown and then we were off running downhill.Course: The marathon course started near the Kilohana Girl Scout Camp on the western slopes of Mauna Kea at around 5,400 feet of elevation. I immediately noticed the huge amount of elevation loss. Right off the starting line the course went downhill and that combined with the dark made me a bit nervous that I would end up falling. The first 7 miles continued at a -7% grade and loses 2,591 feet of elevation which is 48% of the total elevation loss for the whole course. It made running this section extremely challenging because you want to relax into the downhill but not let yourself get out of control. You also don’t want to do a lot of braking which is hard on the body and slows you down. My mantra for the downhills was “flow” sort of like the relentless flow of lava. I tried to relax and keep the effort comfortable hard while enjoying the beautiful mountainous scenery around me. My pace for the first 6.55 miles was 6:46 for a time of 44:22. By the time we got to mile 8 my legs were already feeling the toll of all that steep downhill but I tried to keep my mind positive and just run one mile at a time. The marathon described miles 8-13 as “slow down and hang on.” At mile 11 and 12 the course really flattened out and then there are a few hills for a net elevation gain. It was a challenge to keep pushing at a decent pace and not get discouraged on the hills. Although I was really starting to feel warm by the halfway point I was still holding a pace of 7:23 for a half time of 1:36:45. It really felt like the first half of the race went by quickly. Near mile 13 we made another turn and from miles 14-20 the course lost another 1,600 feet of elevation which is a -4.5% grade. Compared to the first section this amount of downhill felt much more manageable. By mile 16 I was feeling very hot as the sun was shining in a cloudless sky and we were running toward the ocean. It started to feel like the aid stations were too far apart as I was very thirsty by the time I arrived at one. I was very thankful that I decided to go with the more minimal clothing option. There’s nothing like a little suffering to make you feel thankful for the little things- like the occasional breeze that I could feel. For the final 10k the course has around a -2.4% grade and there were a couple small hills. I also started passing a few half marathoners and saw Ed, a listener from Honolulu, out on the course. I really had to work hard at staying positive and focused during the final 10k because I was just so hot. I kept thinking, “I’m running my 50th state marathon, how amazing is that!” but part of me just wanted to be done. I noticed that I wasn’t even sweating that much which is unusual for me and I started dumping water on myself at each aid station. At mile 25 we turned onto Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway. This last mile plus was on exposed blacktop surrounded by lava fields and felt flat, exposed, and HOT. Plus there was a lot of traffic whizzing by. I was trying to keep up a strong effort during the final two miles but being so hot I was somewhat worried. A couple of times I thought, “I hope I don’t pass out . . . I’ve never passed out during a marathon before, that would be awful to come all the way to Hawaii and not finish the race.” When I got to the last mile I realized that I needed to run a sub-8:00 mile to finish sub-3:20 so I decided to do a final push. During the last section we turned back into the Hilton Waikoloa property to finish at the Queen’s Marketplace area. When I saw the 26 mile marker I felt a lot of relief and pushed across the finish line to finish strong. When I looked at the finish clock it said 3:19:59 and I felt so happy to meet my goal of running sub-3:20.Finish Line/Finisher’s Stats: I learned that my official time was 3:19:55 for an average pace of 7:37 per mile which was a 9:23 PR for me. The Revel race also prints off this awesome finisher’s card which lists your time and stats and I learned that I finished as the 4th place female (out of 121), 19th overall (out of 253), and 1st in my AG (out of 17- although the first 3 ladies were also 40+). This was also a Boston Qualifying time of over 20 minutes. They gave out very nice medals along with a fresh lei to all the race finishers. They also had cold water and cold wet towels which felt amazing. I had a chocolate milk but didn’t even get over to see what other food was offered because I met a listener Sherry at the finish line and talked to her for a bit as she waited for her husband Wayne to finish. Then I saw Trevor, Natalie, and Tamanna and went over to celebrate with them. With Tamana and Natalie (my MetPro coach) The total number of Half Marathoners was 332. The male winner was Samuel Fradette with a time of 1:17:58 and the female winner was Krysten Smith with a time of 1:23:40. The total number of marathoners was 225. The male winner was Paul Terranova with a time of 2:49:10 and the female winner was Kamie Miller with a time of 3:08:37. I got my checked bag and changed into my recovery sandals and then we walked to the car to get back to the hotel. By that point I was feeling very happy and relieved to have run strong. My legs were also feeling rather jelly-like, especially in my quads. That started several days of hobbling around walking like a drunken toddler (as Rachel who did the marathon so aptly put it). This was the most sore that I’ve been post-marathon for a long time. By day 4 I was feeling like I normally do the day after a marathon and able to go down stairs and sit down without much discomfort.MTA Meet Up: Later in the afternoon we had the MTA meet up at the Kona Brewing Company and had a great turnout of listeners. In this episode we speak with ultra runner Courtney Dauwalter -winner of the 2019 Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc -the most prestigious trail ultramarathon in Europe. She has also finished first at the Tahoe 200, Western States 100, Moab 240 and many other ultras. Courtney describes herself as an “ultra runner with a love for sunshine, long inseams, and candy.” Since 2011 Courtney has won 38 marathons and ultras according to UltraSignup, 13 of these races she was the 1st place overall finisher beating all the men! Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc In September she won the famous Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc, considered to be the World Cup of ultra running. Over 2,000 of the top trail runners in the world toe the start line. This 106 miles race starts in Chamonix, France, and runs through the Alps (total elevation gain of 32,940 feet), crosses the boarder into Italy, then Switzerland, and back to Chamonix where thousands of cheering spectators and media welcome the champions. Courtney was the first place female with a time of 24 hours, 34 minutes and 26 seconds finishing 1 hour ahead of 2nd place. photo credit: Courtney Dauwalter, InstagramTahoe 200 We also talk about the 2018 Tahoe 200 which is a (you guessed it) 200 mile race around Lake Tahoe -the largest alpine lake in California. Runners must cover the distance in 100 hours (4 days). Courtney did it in 49:54:36 and was the 1st place female finisher (and course record holder). She slept a total of only 21 minutes of the nearly 50 hours of running. To get a sense of the “pain cave” see this video by Salomon Running. Up Next Courtney will be competing for team USA in the 24 Hour World Championships in France. This format requires runners to rack up as many miles as possible on a 1 kilometer loop in 24 hours. The highest distance wins. Also competing for team USA will be Camille Herron (current world record holder), Katalin Nagy, Megan Alvarado, Gina Slaby, and Pam Smith. “When I started running, people laughed at me. But it was a challenge I needed to do for myself.” Dr. Shelby Harris is a clinical psychologist and clinical associate professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the neurology and psychiatry departments. She specializes in anxiety, depression, and treating sleep disorders, and is the author of The Women's Guide to Overcoming Insomnia. What does that have to do with running? On this episode, Dr. Harris shares how treating her insomnia-and-sleep-apnea-riddled patients led her to marathon running. She's now a 13-time marathoner who has taken her time from 5:19 to 3:45, and she's currently training for the 2019 Chicago Marathon, where she hopes to run a Boston Qualifying time. Dr. Harris shares her story of being seconds away from crossing the Boston Marathon finish line in 2013 when the second bomb went off, and talks about losing hearing in her left ear as a result of the blast. Last week we touched on the notion of ambition: how a little can encourage good work but too much can lead to bad choices. This week, we take a critical look at lying and cheating by examining the forces (systems, pressures, incentives) that would lead a person to cheat in sport at both the professional and hobbyjogger (aka Boston Qualifying/not-paid-to-be-here) level, and wonder if that's much different from a time little Coach Sarah lied to her parents about swim practice. To be clear, we are not condoning cheating. Like top colleges, the highest levels of sport are full of people who absolutely deserve to be there. In this podcast we postulate that cheating is not going to end unless we look at why a good person would make a seemingly bad choice.   Show Notes Cheating is defined as: "to act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage, especially in a game or examination." Coach MK and Coach Sarah take a high-level look at pop culture, aka “current history/history in the making” then seeing how our responses to these stories tell us how we view and judge ourselves and how THAT, frequently warped lens, focuses on our goals, our bodies, our expectations...and for most of our runners, all of that is visible in our approach to running. The duo discuss the relevance and importance of their generational wordview (Sarah is a Millennial, MK is a Xennial or something? she isn't quite sure) and how the world changes but the worldview doesn't.  They move on to the New Season of Queer Eye Season 4, where Jonathan Van Ness goes back to his high school to give his music teacher Kathi Dooley a makeover. MK hails from a family of teachers, and is THRILLED that this show deftly and cleanly demonstrates how the job most Baby Boomer and Gen X teachers signed up for isn't the job they are expected to perform today.  This leads to the importance of the arts in general, and how both ladies tie their critical thinking ability to their liberal arts education while realizing that hiring managers may not appreciate what a liberal arts major brings to to a corporate environment anymore. The pressure to major in anything BUT liberal arts is very very real, and the pressure mounts as the cost of education continues to rise, seemingly unabated. After some very cool tangents about Coach Sarah's Harry Potter-sounding college experience at Middlebury (WHAT IS YOUR LIFE COACH SARAH?!?!?) and how pressure to perform broke Coach MK, the duo acknowledge how pressures to perform have increased and students feel they don't have room to learn from failure AND be admitted to top universities anymore. The population is growing but college classes aren't, which means the competition is stiffer than ever...and the incentives to get an advantage any way possible, are rising. When the stakes are high you can bet that cheating is, too. What's a teacher to do? In this conversation, the conclusion is the point as they circle back to look at what cheating is and what the word means when discussing a professional athlete, the holes in the systems that monitor cheating globally, and how the same types of actions are occurring at the hobbyjogger level as the governing bodies struggle to determine how to sniff out and manage doping in super-master categories and why a runner would even consider it or believe that they are not doing anything wrong.   I can only read one link, which one do I pick? I also said to read Celebrity Gossip, Academic Style’s Facebook page.     Why Cheat To Go to Boston When You can Run For Charity? Corral placement. Prestige, too but you cannot discount corral placement as part of the race experience (ask anyone who has ever Run Disney). Coach MK likes to say that running more slowly than you want to go in any given moment is THE hardest thing you will ever do as a runner- so a 3:15 marathoner may not consider a charity bib to be a viable option. The race wouldn't lose allure or integrity by allowing charity runners with a recent race time faster than 4 hours (the original qualifying metric) AND/OR within 10 minutes of the runner's qualifying standard to be corralled with with runners at that same level, but doing so could in fact help allay some of the incentive to cheat and reduce the perception that a charity bib is lesser or undeserving.    BUT LANCE ARMSTRONG!Not letting him off the hook, but casting him out of the sport changed nothing. He will totally make a comeback no matter how any of us feel about it. In this episode we dive into her journey to becoming a marathoner, and how her life changed when her older brother Robert suddenly passed away in August of 2012. Elizabeth talks about how Robert inspired her to chase her dreams & run down those finish lines. Further, we talk about her experience battling binge eating disorder, and how her binge eating disorder effected her running. Elizabeth’s journey is not only inspiring, but it is a reminder that we are stronger than we think we are. "You fail your way to success and what is success, it’s relative, right?" - Sabrina Seher I met Sabrina Seher when I was running the Seattle Quadzilla last fall. Sabrina was also running the Quadzilla. But Sabrina, as you’ll hear in our conversation, really stood out for me. She was saying hello to a lot of people on the course, she was having fun, she was jumping around. She was basically doing everything you don’t do if you want to conserve your energy in order to run 26.2 miles. But we chatted during one of the races and then became Facebook friends. Naturally I started seeing her posts and noticed that it seemed like she is always running a race. And, news flash, she is. She has given me new perspective on what it means to be a runner/marathoner. The typical thinking is that you need 16 weeks of training to prepare for a marathon. And yeah, that is technically true, particularly for first time marathoners or someone looking for a personal record or a Boston Qualifying time. But if enjoy running, especially long distances, then why not run a Quadzilla or run 52 marathons in a year like Sabrina did a couple of years ago? By the first week of April, she had already run in this calendar year five marathons, a 50K and two 100-milers. So, yeah. She’s out there running a lot. In addition to all these marathons, Sabrina owns Super Studio 253 in Tacoma, Washington. The studio offers all sorts of classes as well as training for runners. She also is the race director for the Cascade Super Series marathons and half marathons and manages a group of pacers. At first you might think that Sabrina is all about Super Sabrina. But she’s not. She’s about a Super You! Her motto is Find Your Super. And she really means it. She wants people to be their better selves, to dig deep and discover what it is that can make them Super. And her energy output and desire to make YOU better is quite infectious. As you’ll hear in this conversation, she has not had a straight path to wellness and success. Her life has not been perfect. But she emerged from some dark places only to come bursting out so that she could set an example for her two children and so that she could be an inspiration to others. I observed and was the recipient of a little of that energy during the Seattle Quadzilla. But got a huge dose of it during our conversation and that energy is still with me. She’s the kind of person that you want to surround yourself with. And she kinda gives you faith that there are great people in the world, you just need to know where to look for them and be open. It’s no easy feat to run a marathon under three hours. It’s faster than the fastest Boston Qualifying time of 3:05 (for young men) and according to one analysis, only 4% of men and just 1% of women achieve this level of performance. An article from LiveStrong notes that: “the nonprofit organization RunTri used the times of 230,251 finishers in 25 races to determine that in the 2011-2012 marathon season the average time for any person, regardless of gender or age, was 4 hours, 24 minutes and 0 seconds.” I’m not familiar with either of these sources so we should be careful with the results. Let’s take them with a big grain of salt. But still, they underscore the general idea that a sub-3 marathon is really hard! And especially for women, who weren’t born with many of the biological “tools” that aid performance (higher muscle mass, more testosterone, etc.). So this coaching call was particularly exciting for me. Lindsey has a 3:14 personal best but that wasn’t under ideal conditions – in other words, she knows a lot of improvement is possible. In this conversation, we discuss her training background, past race performances, and the training upgrades required to make her sub-3 marathon dream a reality.

Meggie Smith is a chief resident in OB-GYN at the NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City, and is working to be a reproductive endocrinologist and reproductive specialist. (“I want to help women have babies,” she says.) We met when Meggie was in medical school, and now she delivers babies and performs risky surgeries as part of her job. On this episode, Meggie — a former tennis player and run-hater-turned-marathoner — talks about what it was like working at NYU when Hurricane Sandy hit, shares why she chose NYU (hint: it involves the Olsen twins), and talks about how she managed to run a Boston Qualifying marathon time while working 80-hour weeks. She opens up about “going into survival mode” at work, the first time she delivered a baby, and the very tragic — but very real — parts of her job. This summer, Meggie is headed west! Cheer her on as she finishes up her residency and heads to the University of Southern California to start a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Sarah Conklin is perhaps best known on the internet as the blogger behind “Once Upon a Lime.” She lives in Bend, OR, where she works for Picky Bars, the sports bar company founded by professional athletes Lauren Fleshman, Jesse Thomas, and Stephanie Bruce. Before that, she worked for Oiselle, the women’s athletic wear company, and was an avid marathoner. Now, after taking a bit of a break from the marathon distance, Sarah is back at it, training under Lauren Fleshman’s guidance. On this episode, we talked about everything from what a day in the life of a Picky Bars employee is like (bonus: it sometimes includes starting the day on the ski slopes) to failed Boston Qualifying attempts to getting a divorce in your twenties. The last thing we want to do is often the first thing we need to do.  - Tim Ferriss (paraphrased) I hate pull ups. They intimidate the hell out of me. I suck at them. I can bench over 200 pounds without flinching, yet shake in my boots when I need to do 10 pull ups. That doesn't mean I can't do them. That just means I hate doing them. As noted above by Ferriss, the thing that I least want to do is often what I should address first. However, it's discouraging and not motivating to do the things we hate to do. So, how do we do them? I have officially dedicated Wednesday's to including pull up's in my workout routine. I absolutely hate doing them, but I know they need to get done as they are a great bodyweight exercise. With my Boston Qualifying attempt training in full swing now, I need to include more and more bodyweight exercises to maintain my overall athlete build. I've coined the term #DontWannaWednesday as my motivator and reminder that, at the least, I will get the exercise(s) I should be doing done. For more, click up top to listen to the podcast. Qualifying for the Boston Marathon in 2014 is going to be even tougher than ever now that so many proud runners want to show their support following the tragedies in the 2013 Boston Marathon. That's why I share my previous experiences and failures in trying to qualify for Boston and what I am doing this year to try and qualify for the 2014 Boston Marathon.
