If you are looking for a podcast loaded with tips to help you dominate you next race, you have come to the right place.  Each episode I dive into relevant research to help mold you into a better endurance athlete, share training strategies I use with my clients, and interview other coaches and athletes in the OCR world. In todays episode I share research that compared different high intensity training methods and how they impact neuromuscular response and vagal tone.  One of the methods was burpees interestingly.  Using this study I share some key elements to consider when trying to program HIIT training into your routine.   The Big Bear Spartan Race is just around the corner.  With this in mind I wanted to cover I question I have heard many times.  How do you train to prepare for altitude when you don't live at altitude?  It is a tough situation but there is plenty of simple things you can do to help prepare.  In fact, I cover 7 things you can easily do to plan for your next race at altitude.   Finally, I chat with Matthew O'Quinn.  In 2011 Matthew was overweight and unhealthy, so he decided to lose some weight and completely redefine his health. He lost around 40 lbs. and then eventually discovered OCR.  His first Spartan race was in 2012 and received his first trifecta in 2013.    Wanted to discover more he started on the endurance path and did his first Hurricane Heat in 2016.  He has spent many years doing Spartan Races and the Spartan Endurance events as well as another well-known event, the Gauntlet down in middle Georgia. In 2016 he finished his first Spartan Hurricane heat with the famous class 080. Since then, he has finished many more Hurricanes including the 4, 12, and 24 hour events over the past several years. He  has also competed in the Gauntlet in Georgia several times and will soon be participating in the Spartan Death Race.  This wasn't an easy journey and in fact Matthew faced many failures along the way.  When everyone was telling him to stop and give up and looked in and found what he needed to move and over come his challenges.  Matt shares his journey and knowledge on how to deal with repeated failure and how to attain your goals.   Enjoy the show! The shorter Spartan races don't rise to the level of difficulty you face in the Death Race. The Spartan Death Race is designed with mental challenges as well as physical. There are odd items, difficult to obtain, that you have to bring to the race. And before you can begin the race, you have to solve a puzzle. If you can't solve it, you can't even get to the starting line. The starting time is not set, so you have to be ready to go when the announcement is made. Cliff offers great insights into the mindset required to train for and compete in this amazing challenge.

Joe DiStefano is a coach, educator, the Founder of RUNGA, and host of the STACKED podcast. Joe joins Adam on this episode of Up and Adam to do a deep dive into the science of stress, how the modern world has cornered us into a neverending state of survival mode, and how to break out of that vicious cycle. Joe kicks things off talking about his transition out of the corporate side of the wellness industry into pursuing an NASM certification in 2004, during a time when “the fitness scene was very much ‘sit-and-push' and personal trainers were basically ‘rep counters'.” After a brief period of learning in physical therapy circles he opened his own gym, Ultimate Athlete, at the age of 24. Down the road, he sold the gym and got the opportunity to become an early-stage company advisor—and later full-time executive—for Spartan. “In the fitness franchise,” says Joe, “I learned how to scale coaching.” This was the reason he joined Spartan, and a foundational experience that led to his success as an sought-after authority in the world of fitness. Asked about the psychology of those that dive into endurance events, especially one as grueling as the Spartan Death Race, Joe says that it comes down to the accessibility of endurance sports and the opportunity they give us to stretch ourselves beyond our limits. This led down into a rabbit hole that contained the real meat of today's discussion: navigating stress in our fast-paced and increasingly tribalistic society. The prevalence of chronic stress in today's world means that a large amount of our energy is being shuttled away from our vital systems and toward those that fuel our primal survival instinct. This high-stress state that too many of us have been living day-in and day-out has been a huge blow to our gut and reproductive health, not to mention mental health. Joe and Adam go into how “bad” stress negatively impacts our lives in more ways than most think, and how we rise above the noise.   Follow Joe @coachjoedi Follow Adam @vonrothfelder   Key Highlights Joe shares what motivated him to sell his gym and work with Spartan. What type of personality becomes motivated to take part in the Spartan Death Race? Joe talks about the difference between “good” stress (ex. athletic activities) versus “bad” stress (ex. watching the news), and when it might be a good idea to exercise less. Joe explains why you shouldn't get your news from the same place you read up on conspiracy theories. Powerful Quotes by Joe We all need something, and I think that endurance sports are just low-hanging fruit. Exercise is beneficial, but if your exercise is a super beatdown, and you're super-stressed already from watching the news or having some sort of emotional stress or fighting with your spouse, then you might have been better off doing a half-hour foam roll than doing some super-hard exercise session. Anything that's metabolically expensive and doesn't lead to an increased chance of survival under stress is basically stunted, or shunted, until the stress goes away—but the stress never goes away these days.

When Amelia Boone entered the World's Toughest Mudder in December of 2011, she was an unknown 27-year-old attorney living in Chicago. A few of her buddies thought it might be cool to try out this crazy, overnight version of an obstacle racing event called The Tough Mudder. 24 plus hour later, she was the 2nd placed female. It turns out only a handful of all participants (men or women) could endure the freezing temperatures and water submersions. By the end of 2015, Amelia would appear on 35 obstacle racing podiums. Many sponsors jumped on board along with several mainstream media articles, one dubbing her "The Queen of Pain". Some of her best performances would be in the longest and most difficult events in the obstacle racing space. She won both the World's Toughest Mudder and multi-day Spartan Death Race 3 times each. She even entered a local 30K trail race in December and won that too. In February of 2016, Amelia continued to excel as a remarkable endurance athlete. She finished 2nd in the Sean O'Brien 100K and earned a Golden Ticket at The Western States 100-mile race. A Western States entry is one of the most sought-after prizes in ultra-running. A couple of months later, her huge high became a pride crushing disappointment as Amelia fractured her femur and had to postpone her Western States debut. The following two years became a series of injuries and "semi - comebacks".  Amelia struggled, as she would race, get injured, rehab, race, get injured, and then repeat the cycle. Rumors swirled about Amelia as people watched her rise and fall with injuries. People quietly judged and wondered why she was frequently breaking bones. Sadly, as with any woman in the public eye, their looks and bodies are scrutinized. You’re either too thin, or too fat, or too much makeup or not enough. One month ago, Amelia wrote about her lifelong struggles with anorexia, which she had never spoken or written about publicly. Here is an excerpt. "I had spent the past 20 years starving. Literally: not just physically, but emotionally. I was tired of fighting and so fucking tired of being hungry." On this episode of the podcast, Amelia Boone talks about: What led her to check herself into treatment at Opal Food and Body. How and why she does gratitude lists every morning. What NOT to say to someone who struggles with an eating disorder. The backlash to being in the spotlight. Why "Spartan Up" isn't necessarily a good solution to a problem. Her plan to be at World's Toughest Mudder at 2019 for one last time? Show Notes: All things Amelia Boone Support Us On Patreon

Chuck asks: You mentioned having your antioxidant profile tested.  I actually just had that done and have very good results.  My dietician mentioned that there a significant genetic factor in that as well-how much of a role does that play? Also, my Cobalamin (B12) and Pantothenate were low.  What dietary changes can I make to increase these? In my response to Chuck, I mention the ION Profile w/40 Amino Acids-METAMETRIX Edwin asks: Ben, My question is regarding the use of energy gels in combination with other liquid nutrition. Energy gels by themselves are extremely hypertonic and thereby it is important to consume adequate amounts of water. The gel company I use states that drinking electrolyte sports drinks with your gel (instead of water) will not properly dilute the gel, thus slowing the absorption rate. This can also lead to stomach irritation and a dehydrating effect as your cellular fluids are drawn upon to dilute the gel. What are your thoughts on this? I heard you say that you use a gel every 20 minutes during a race. Do you only drink water? I want to get the best and most useable nutrition into my body during a race.  I called the gel company who also make the liquid fuel that I use, and asked how they suggested the use. I didn't really get an answer. In my response to Edwin, I recommend he reads my Healthy Race Day Nutrition Plan. I also reference this chart on the ingredients of popular sports gels. Hollie asks:  I'm an absolute beginner as far as fitness and exercise.   I started a boot camp in June and was actually liking it quite a bit and seeing results.  Then I got tendonitis in my shoulders, right elbow and right wrist.  I work as a housekeeper so I am not able to rest that arm at all.  I ice it after work, take ibuprofen when I remember (not daily).  My arms hurt so they wake me up at night. Is there a way to "power rest" my arms?  I get one day off a month, and my daily life is kicking my butt.  I would like to be able to do pushups again, or any kind of arm work.  Some days I can't pour a cup of coffee.  Can you suggest anything? In my response to Hollie, my recommendations include: -Only choose the EAT foods off the Superhuman Food Pyramid -1 TianChi per day (Chinese Adaptogenic Herb complex) on empty stomach -4-6 Recoverease proteolytic enzymes on empty stomach  -1 daily serving of concentrated greens (to balance pH). Recommend Enerprime, Capragreens, Supergreens, or cycling between all three. -1-2x/day full body session with Rumble Roller -1-2x/day 15-20 minute soak in magnesium salts -10-15 sprays topical magnesium on all sore muscles -Only if you test iron and it's low, use of Floradix -Wear 110% Play Harder full leg compression tights with ice for 30-60 minutes (use code GREENFIELD & get 10% discount and free shipping) -Sleep with magnet taped or placed over injured area -Home handheld low level cold laser unit, circle around area for 10-15 minutes, 1-2x/day -Home electrostimulation unit, 1-2 20 minute sessions per day -4-12 Phenocane per day -9-12 Capraflex per day Bill asks: What do you recommend for 2hr MtB/XC race - UCAN Superstarch or Vitargo S2? Angela asks: I'm having a hard time with the Squatty Potty and why it is a benefit.  I actually get what the SP website is saying about the anorectal angle  and why using the SP to change it makes it easier to go to the bathroom, but I don't see why you can't just bend over.  In comparing images between someone on a SP and someone doing a seated row, both show their knees just inches from their chest.   Do you believe someone can get the same benefits as the SP by simply bending over while on the pot? Synthia asks: For the last 3 months I have been doing the Insanity dvds everyday (finished the first 60 days and started it up again).  Before that I was running everyday.  So all in all I am in good shape (could still be better) but i feel that with all this rigorous excercise my legs should be more tone. However, it feels like I can't get them be stronger or toner looking.  How can I achieve this? In my response to Synthia, I recommend my body typing book at http://www.GetFitGuy.com Angela asks: I don't think I've ever heard either of you talk about any obstacle races.  Have you considered qualifying for (and of course competing in) the World's Toughest Mudder or the Spartan Death Race?  If not, why? Compare/contrast tough mudder and death race, then talk about your adventure racing. In my response to Angela, I mention the Endurance Planet interview about the Spartan Death Race. I also recommend this Race Day Domination plan for obstacle course racing.
