Philip Cortelyou Johnson may be more responsible than anyone for the shift from Modernism as a new way of living to Modernism as an elite bauble. Born into immense power and privilege, he was a deeply committed elitist, and dilettante fascist, who used his money and connections to whitewash his youthful (and ongoing) embrace of Hitler in specific and far-right politics in general. As a key curator and preacher of the Modernist gospel in the United States, he was central in divorcing the style from its egalitarian political aspirations. In response to criticism, he said: “I am a whore. “For now will I go straight to my matter,In which you may the double sorrows hearOf Troilus in loving of Criseyde,And how that she forsook him ere she died.”Troilus and Creseyde by Geoffrey Chaucer Troilus and Cressida is one of Shakespeare’s lesser known plays, and I kind of understand why. The ending is not the most satisfying. However, Shakespeare did not come up with this story. Chaucer did. Or at least, Chaucer wrote it down. Of course, Shakespeare adapted the story for the stage, but the core elements are there. The key difference between Shakespeare’s version and Chaucer’s is that Chaucer was making a clear statement about courtly love. The idea that loving someone brought you closer to the divine. Shakespeare’s play does not have such a clear message. In fact, by shortening the timeline and making the characters more blunt, Shakespeare seems to have an almost nihilistic view of the situation. All the mushy love stuff is stripped away and we are left with harsh reality. Shakespeare adapting source material is nothing new, however, this example is notable because of what changed. Today, Eli and I will be discussing Troilus and Cressida, so strap on your armor, we’re heading to Troy. Sources:Bradbook, M.C. “What Shakespeare Did to Chaucer’s Troilus and Criseyde.” Shakespeare Quarterly, vol. 9, no. 3, 1958, pp. 311-319., doi:10.2307/2867331. On the "complicated" side of "evil and complicated" that makes up our show's motto, we present the story of the gravely-voiced Congressman who blazed trails for gay political involvement at the highest levels of power in Washington, only to spend the latter part of his career selling out the left to finance capital and excluding trans people from fights for non-discrimination legislation. Whip-smart, funny, and always ready with a biting comeback, Barney Frank came to embody the transformation of the Democratic Party away from the working class and towards a suburban party preoccupied with shallow diversity rather than true racial and economic justice. ----more---- SOURCES: Aloisi, James. “Louise Day Hicks: ‘You Know Where I Stand.’” CommonWealth Magazine, October 16, 2013. https://commonwealthmagazine.org/politics/012-louise-day-hicks-you-know-where-i-stand/.   Battenfeld, Joe. “Barney Frank Resurfaces, to the Dismay of Bernie Sanders.” Boston Herald, January 29, 2020. https://www.bostonherald.com/2020/01/28/barney-frank-resurfaces-to-the-dismay-of-bernie-sanders/.   Chotiner, Isaac. “Barney Frank Is Not Impressed By Bernie Sanders.” Slate Magazine, March 30, 2016. https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2016/03/barney-frank-is-not-impressed-by-bernie-sanders.html.   Cottle, Michelle. “Bailout.” The New Republic, December 3, 2008. https://newrepublic.com/article/62857/bailout. We discuss her role as a tory propagandist and as a spy rewriting recent history to glorify the heroic individual. The righteous Levellers and "delegating" the power of the people. *This message is recorded by Daniel Lim as an individual and not as a representation of IHOPKC or any other organization or position held. The Origin of 'Quarantine' The intersection of Italian and French influences also contributed to the introduction of the word quarantine in English. Initially, the French word quarantaine (“about forty”) was borrowed in the late 1400s with the meaning “a period of forty days,” yet another biblical reference, originally referring to the period of time Jesus spent fasting in the desert. It came to have a broader application to a period of forty days that had religious significance, such as penance, or the delay of implementation of a legal agreement. Then, in the early 1600s, the meaning “isolation of a ship to protect the port city from potential disease” began to be used in English, from the Italian word quarantena, which had been used in this way since the 14th century. Since the French form of this cognate word was already in use (indeed, a variant form was the more French-looking quarantain), the new “isolation as protection from disease” sense became a new use of the existing word quarantine. It was now an English word based on French spelling with an Italian definition and Latin roots.** **“Quarantine and Isolation: Explaining the Difference.” Merriam-Webster. Merriam-Webster. The Palestinian-Israeli relations, more than any other relations, have tremendous difficulties and ups and downs because of the fact that Israel came into existence through a hard, and painful (holocaustal) birth, and the Palestinian people, on the other hand, discovered the modern ideas of citizenship and nationality after a long history of seclusion. In this paper, we will discuss and ascertain the reasons behind the complications that reflected the peace talks between the two sides that was almost knocking on the door of the final peace. The final result would be answering the question of whether the Two States Solution is possible or is there no such a possibility after two Palestinian Intifadhas or Shake offs. What do early sources say about how others viewed Jesus? Hey, would you let me know how you’re liking this multi-part show (hello@forthehope.com)? We’ve never done a 12-part anything, and there is more is more to go in this Habermas book so I’ve A) included a running summary in the show notes and B) tried to recap the previous day each day to provide continuity…but that doesn’t mean it’s working. Bible segment: Reading along with The Bible Project Translation: ESV (English Standard Version) Our reading: Isaiah 45-48 Apologetics segment: Gary Habermas and Jesus’ uniqueness My running summary and comments of the key ideas so far: In modernity, a common objection is “science is real” and “religion is opinion.” While we should test everything, including miracles, there are six places to test to see if Jesus’ claims were unmatched by founders of other major religions (it’s a beautiful thing about Christianity – it’s testable). #1: Jesus claimed to be deity. Buddha didn’t, and whatever spiritism or divinity is part of some Buddhist practices in China didn’t really develop until 700 years later. Like Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism began more reservedly, and they later evolved into “more phenomenal, mystical, and occultic versions.” (p16) Some historians speculate that this happened, in part, due to competition for followers – they got more sensationalistic to attract attention. Conclusion – in terms of self-claim to deity, these “naturalistic ethical, social, and political thinkers” (p16) are not rivals to Jesus. What about other “prophets?” Zoroaster, chief prophet of the Persian religion never claimed to be deity. Muhammad, is certainly not elevated to deity – in fact, a core tenet of Islam is that a human elevating themselves to equality with God is unforgivable blasphemy (you can see why they then have to purport a historically-distorted Jesus!). And the Old Testament – the Hebrew scriptures of Judaism? Their prophets certainly are not deified either. What about Krishna? Reports conflict, including as to whether or not Krishna actually existed or is just a poetic device. Too, the Hindu idea of deity isn’t exactly what we think of compared to the “one god-ism” of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism – you yourself might ultimately attain to such a status as have millions of others. Worse, the time-distance between Krishna and the earliest writings is thousands of years. Evaluating Jesus’ claims from five early sources. “Son of God” – Jesus both claimed this and, relatedly, spoke of his Father in familiar-but-uncommon ways. “Son of Man” – Jesus isn’t called “Son of Man” in a single NT epistle; it was entirely his own self-designation. He was worshipped, including being sung and prayed to, by otherwise monotheistic, Law-abiding Jews. He was given the name of God, included in the concept of “one God,” from the very earliest of days (not something that developed later) Early creedal texts indicate – a lot – that declarations about who Jesus was occurred exceptionally early. Conclusion: Jesus actually did make many crucial claims that are unlike those taught by any chief founder of the other major world religions What cannot be substantiated from any reliable historical data: Assumptions that these other founders made similar comments That non-Christian teachings were just differing aspects of essentially similar messages -- nor even minor variances to be accounted for by different cultures, either Take Action Your personal prayer reading: Psalm 119:33-64 Sources and Resources Gary Habermas, “The Uniqueness of Jesus Christ Among the Major World Religions” (Lynchburg, VA: GaryHabermas.com, 2016). http://www.garyhabermas.com/Evidence2/Habermas-Uniqueness-of-Jesus-Christ-2016.pdf. First order of business: cultural apologetics. May I have permission to make a non-political point by using someone else’s political statement? [In this post on Twitter, Obianuju Ekeocha demonstrates clearly that many political heavyweights are spinning the tragedy in Sri Lanka](http://). I want you to look at this and ask yourself one question: why do they not want to say this terrorism was targeting Christians? Why does one famous, famous lady feed you a line of crap that Easter is a special day for many religions? Sometimes I think that’s all we have to do as Christian casemakers – ask a question of someone. The ones who will “get it” will get it, and others will be willfully blind no matter what your argument. And it will become clear that their agenda is not even neutral…that it is anti-Christian. If your point of view is that religion is just personal preference (if not fluff), it’s inconceivable that one might contain objective truth claims. • Ignoring philosopher David Hume’s a priori objection, miracles do need to be researched in order to ascertain whether or not they actually occurred. Mere assertions aren’t helpful. • Be aware that detractors and skeptics do often hold Christian miracle claims to a different set of standards than their own claims. As casemakers, we can and should identify these and, with gentleness and respect, challenge them. https://construyetufisico.com/podcast/5-razones-para-entrenar-que-no-son-por-estetica/ Llevo mucho tiempo relacionado con la industria del fitness. 2. References: 1. University of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia.
