Becoming Your Best | The Principles of Highly Successful Leaders
Life is hard sometimes. We get to face challenges we’ve never imagined we would, during our time on this earth – and it’s up to us how we react to those obstacles in our way to a happy and successful existence. What would you do? Give up, or push through? Your ability to be successful in spite of challenges is directly related to how fast you're able to say "so what!" My guest today is a true example of that statement. Summer Owens is an award-winning Resilience and Leadership speaker, 11-times published author, and certified life coach. She's the founder and CEO of S.O. What! and the S.O What! Foundation. In addition to being an author and a speaker, life coach, excuse eliminator, and entrepreneur, she is an adjunct professor at the University of Memphis where she teaches marketing and the life skills course she created. Summer became a mother at 15 as a result of a forced sexual encounter, but she didn't let that stop her from achieving her dreams! She graduated from high school, college, and business school with honors and was named "Most Likely To Succeed" and "Miss University" - with her son by her side through it all. And she indeed earned her prize! Listen to Episode 244 of Becoming Your Best, to find out her story, how she overcame the obstacles in her life, what drove her, and how she’s inspiring countless people through her work. Some questions I ask: Tell us about your background, including any turning points in your life that’s had a significant impact on you and on what you’re doing. (02:42) How did you get to be a speaker? Where did that idea come from? (07:35) What’s it like being a woman minority in corporate America? (10:40) What is it like to tell such a personal story, like you’ve been talking about? (13:39) Tell us about S.O What! Give us the background on it, describe it, help us understand it. (17:09) Any final tips you’d like to leave our listeners with? (24:50) In this episode, you will learn: The reason Summer decided to write her memoir – her first book. (04:37) How having set goals motivated Summer to push through the challenges she was faced with and defy the statistics. (05:15) Three of the Becoming Your Best Principles that helped Summer become successful: having a vision, managing with a plan, and prioritizing your time. (08:47) The importance of looking for the lesson in every challenge you go through. (21:33) How to be accountable for your life. (22:15) The power of never giving up whenever life gets hard. The BS of 1% Improvement We hear, in this world of self development, that just improve whatever you're doing by 1% and the results will be ..... You may have also heard of 'CANI' - Constant and Never ending Improvement which I guess follows a similar theme. Are these BS? It would be provocative to say so wouldn't it? Would it be true? - Not really but no one really tells you how because it appears to be so simple. BUT simple doesn't necessarily mean easy :O( What seems to follow when we try this is shear overwhelm leading to procrastination and giving up - not a pretty sight and it's not very motivating. So................... Let's get in a little deeper and explore how we can achieve this and when we do how sensational the results will be. Let's explore ways in which we can be filled with genuine motivation though out the whole adventure, which when you look at it is in fact your life. Episode Title: Marketing Performance: Being Strategic About Marketing Ops with Jocelyn Brown, Allocadia It’s all about being ‘contextual’ this week on The Talking Stack! You hear the word ‘contextual’ and you think this is going to be about CX..but today we are talking about it in two different..well..contexts.. (sorry): the importance of context in measuring marketing performance; and the importance of context in buyer intent. Segment 1 with Jocelyn Brown from Allocadia is all about measurement and metrics, and Segment 2 is our quick takeaways from the Google Marketing Week and how it might impact the way you think about buyer intent and discovery as two sides of your programmatic adtech budget in 2020 and beyond! Segment 1: talking measurement and marketing ops with Jocelyn Brown First up, every marketers’ favorite (not) topic: performance measurement! We pick Jocelyn’s brains marketing ops and measurement best practices. Here is what we distilled it down to: 1. Approach measurement in the context of: o What your customers are trying to achieve o Your own organizational business goals o Your campaign and activity level goals o The dynamic internal and external environment o What you are trying to achieve with the metrics 2. Prioritize the metrics you really need based on: - Your goals and desired outcomes - Achievability - Internal audiences (hint: not every metric needs to be shared with everyone) 3. What mistakes do marketers make with measurement? - Too many metrics without purpose - ‘One core metric’ - Getting lost in operational data - Being inconsistent in measuring a metric 4. What skills do marketing ops specialists need today? - Understanding their own and their customer’s business - Data literacy/ systems thinking - Being a storyteller and connecting all the users of the metrics back to the business goals 5. How can we leverage marketing ops in more strategic ways? - Tie everything back to business goals - Involve marketing ops in planning so they can deliver more strategic outcomes - Help them create a winning ‘marketing experience’ for marketers who create winning customer experiences BONUS: Allocadia shares their martech stack Allocadia’s stack is all about driving value in conversations. And so, aside from CRM (Salesforce) and Marketing Automation (Marketo), they also have Pathfactory to help track and measure content consumption, Salesloft to sift through relevant conversations, Drift conversational marketing for acquisition, and Gainsight to help visualize data and prioritize tasks. Jocelyn also believes in her Nudge.ai tool to measure the depth and strength of customer relationships (Talking Stack listeners will recall meeting Dave Gerhardt from Drift and Steve Woods from Nudge.ai on the show! Check out those episodes to learn more about what they do to help with your goals) As a thumb rule, says Jocelyn, Allocadia tries to create a stack that helps focus on adoption metrics (very crucial for them as a SaaS) and facilitates customer conversations around value (crucial as a customer-centric company). SEGMENT 2: At 25.00 – Google Marketing Week 2019 takeaways – - Its about a new approach to intent – it’s all about balancing ‘contextual intent’ and ‘discovery’ Plus: - Anand wants more ‘dumb intelligence’ in the advertising he sees! - David manages to use ‘Borges’ and ‘Bayesian Hypothesis’ in a ten-minute span
Yesterday we heard that argument that Jesus called himself the Son of God, but what is this “Son of Man” stuff all about? Today’s apologetics segment. Yesterday I attended TEDxPortland, one of the largest in the country and even the world, and I was struck at how much conversation I had going on in the context of worldviews being presented. You might argue that the voices in my head are reason to start some meds, but I’m thinking that growing as a Christian casemaker has the benefit of helping you grow in discernment…something we are all called to do. Bible segment: Reading along with The Bible Project Translation: ESV (English Standard Version) Our reading: Isaiah 42-44 Apologetics segment: Gary Habermas and Jesus’ uniqueness My running summary and comments of the key ideas so far: • In modernity, a common objection is “science is real” and “religion is opinion.” • While we should test everything, including miracles, there are six places to test to see if Jesus’ claims were unmatched by founders of other major religions (it’s a beautiful thing about Christianity – it’s testable). • #1: Jesus claimed to be deity. o Buddha didn’t, and whatever spiritism or divinity is part of some Buddhist practices in China didn’t really develop until 700 years later. o Like Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism began more reservedly, and they later evolved into “more phenomenal, mystical, and occultic versions.” (p16) Some historians speculate that this happened, in part, due to competition for followers – they got more sensationalistic to attract attention. o Conclusion – in terms of self-claim to deity, these “naturalistic ethical, social, and political thinkers” (p16) are not rivals to Jesus. o What about other “prophets?” Zoroaster, chief prophet of the Persian religion never claimed to be deity. Muhammad, is certainly not elevated to deity – in fact, a core tenet of Islam is that a human elevating themselves to equality with God is unforgivable blasphemy (you can see why they then have to purport a historically-distorted Jesus!). And the Old Testament – the Hebrew scriptures of Judaism? Their prophets certainly are not deified either. o What about Krishna? Reports conflict, including as to whether or not Krishna actually existed or is just a poetic device. Too, the Hindu idea of deity isn’t exactly what we think of compared to the “one god-ism” of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism – you yourself might ultimately attain to such a status as have millions of others. Worse, the time-distance between Krishna and the earliest writings is thousands of years. • Evaluating Jesus’ claims from early sources. o “Son of God” – Jesus both claimed this and, relatedly, spoke of his Father in familiar-but-uncommon ways. o “Son of Man” – Jesus isn’t called “Son of Man” in a single NT epistle; it was entirely his own self-designation. Take Action Your personal prayer reading: Psalm 119:1-32 Gary Habermas, “The Uniqueness of Jesus Christ Among the Major World Religions” (Lynchburg, VA: GaryHabermas.com, 2016). http://www.garyhabermas.com/Evidence2/Habermas-Uniqueness-of-Jesus-Christ-2016.pdf. Bible segment: Reading along with The Bible Project Today’s personal prayer reading: Psalm 116 Translation: CSB (Christian Standard Bible) Our reading: Isaiah 30:26-35 Apologetics segment: Gary Habermas and Jesus’ uniqueness I’m wondering if it’d be interesting to call this a “news you can use” or “words you can use” section. • In modernity, a common objection is “science is real” and “religion is opinion.” • While we should test everything, including miracles, there are six places to test to see if Jesus’ claims were unmatched by founders of other major religions (it’s a beautiful thing about Christianity – it’s testable). In this episode, Richard talks about why marketing your law firm really matters. The reasons for this may seem obvious, but Richard cuts deeper and puts a strong emphasis on the relationships that we form with our clients. Richard starts by telling a story about a paralegal stopping by his office notifying him that a client was on the phone and wanted to speak with him specifically. Richard relays the emotions he felt before, during and after this telephone call. Richard then educates us about two key points to take away from this story and a key element needed for effective and captivating marketing. 01:18 – Introduction of why marketing your law firm really matters. o A story from Richard regarding taking a phone call from a client. o An unexpected surprise resulting from this call. o What caused the client’s feelings towards her interactions with Richard’s law firm. 04:33 – The first lesson from Richard’s story. o Making a significant impact on someone’s life. o Remembering the “why” of what you do. 06:27 – The second lesson from Richard’s story. o The influence stories have on marketing. o Our train of thought while listening to Richard’s story. o Grabbing someone’s attention and “cutting through the noise.” o Things to think about before your next day at work. In this episode Richard talks about the 3 types of internet traffic. He tells us which type of traffic to focus on to generate the revenue that we need to be financially free and why the two other types of traffic are not nearly as fruitful. We learn that traffic we can directly utilize in our law firm, without depending on a third party, is invaluable to long-term success. Richard provides examples while describing the three types of traffic so we can gain a clear understanding of them. There is a spotlight on the third type that he describes, and we are given insight as to why we may be losing easy leads and what can be done to counter this problem. Finally, we also hear about Richard’s Facebook Group for attorneys and law firms that allows those involved in marketing in the legal space to seek advice and get opinions from others who are similarly situated. Link to Facebook Group -- https://www.facebook.com/groups/281501032483552 02:15 – Traffic that you Control. o What is traffic from an internet marketing standpoint. o Using a Facebook ad as an example of controlling traffic. o The positive points about this type of traffic, such as the number of users and simplicity. o The negative points about this type of traffic, such as depending on third parties. 08:54 – Traffic that you Earn. o An example of a law firm earning traffic from exposure in the news. o A negative quality about this type of traffic that is shared with traffic that you control. 11:25 – Traffic that you Own. o The significance of being able to capture information about the people who are visiting your website. o A discussion about how client lists are part of traffic that you own. o Avoiding missed opportunities in your marketing and rethinking your strategy. o The money is in the traffic that you own. o Richard’s newly created Facebook group. Sat 17 Mar 2018 ✏️ Authentic Adhkār from the Qur’an & Sunnah: Lesson 9: The Purpose of our Creation, and the falsehood of Atheism and Polytheism • Brief recap of previous lessons • Importance of having a connection to Allah • Ibn Qayyim’s statement that the need of the slave to remember his lord is just as the need of a fish for water • One who makes no remembrance of his lord, then his heart is an empty void • Allah gave us a purpose and an objective to our existence • Allah says: “And I (Allah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone)” (Surah Dhaariyaat (The Winds that Scatter) verse 56) o Allah, from the very beginning of the creation of our father Adam, this was the objective and Allah ordered all of the Angels to prostrate to Adam o Shaitaan (Satan), unlike the Angels, refused to prostrate and so he became from the disbelievers o NOTE: Unlike some Christians, we do NOT believe that Shaitaan (Satan) was an Angel or a “fallen angel”. He is a Jinn. • Shaitaan attempts to misguide the people and lead them to the hellfire • The falsehood of Atheism. o It is from our innate human nature that we believe and recognise that we have a creator. Even the atheist cannot escape the recognition that there is a being greater than themselves • The story of the Muslim scholar vs a group of Atheists (approx. 1300 years ago) o What did the Scholar say to them? o The clear error of Atheists that they recognise purpose and design in everyday life, yet reject purpose and design in life itself, or in the complexity of the world we live in. They will refuse to accept that a ship can come about without a ship maker, yet they insist to believe that the creation/everything in existence can come about without a creator. • Allah says: “Who has created death and life, that He may test you which of you is best in deed. And He is the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving;” [Surah Al-Mulk (The Dominion) verse 67] o The test requires effort. Following the commands of the devil is easier than following the commands of our Lord. o Certainly, there will be a resurrection and the results of this test will become clear to see • Anas bin Malik narrated that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: "Three follow the deceased, two of them return, and one remains. He is followed by his family, his wealth, and his deeds. So his family and his wealth returns, and his deeds remain." [Jami` at-Tirmidhi] • Abu Dharr reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, reported that Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, said: "My slaves! I have forbidden injustice for Myself and I have made it forbidden among you, so do not wrong one another. "My slaves! You err by night and day and I forgive wrong actions and do not care. Ask me for forgiveness and I will forgive you. "My slaves! All of you are hungry unless I have fed you, so ask Me to feed you, and I will feed you. All of you are naked unless I have clothed you, so ask Me to clothe you and I will clothe you. "My slaves! If all of you, the first of you and the last of you, the jinn among you and the men among you, were to be as godfearing as the most godfearing heart of any one of you, that would not add anything to My kingdom. If they were to be as corrupt as the most corrupt heart of any one of you, that would not decrease anything in My kingdom. If they were to join together in one place and then ask of Me, and I gave every man among them what he asked for that, that would not reduce My kingdom at all, except as the sea is decreased if a needle is dipped into it. "My slaves! It is only your actions which I have appointed for you. Whoever finds good should praise Allah. Whoever finds other than that should only blame himself.'" Sunday 11 Mar 2018 Remedying the Heavy and Tight Chest Lesson 8: Importance of having a Balance between Fear and Hope, Knowledge expands the chest • Recap of Lesson 7: o Signs of a person having the noor of Eemaan in their heart o What did Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami say about preparing for death o How the companions and Salaf would take their self into account • Ibn Al-Qayyim said that the believer has good opinions about his brothers and sisters (Husnudhan), but holds negative opinion regarding himself (Suu’udhan), this is so that he does not become complacent and content with his actions. • Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami mentions to us the importance of having a balance between fear and hope o This is one of the ways of preparing for death o We have hope in the mercy of Allah and also fear his punishment o What will happen if one has just fear of Allah and no hope? o What about a person who has nothing but hope for Allah’s mercy and has no fear, “Allah will forgive me whatever I do” o What is the measuring stick for having fear of Allah, how does one know if his fear of Allah is lacking or extreme? The criteria are the companions of the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) At the time of death what did Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) say on his deathbed? What did ‘Amr bin Al-‘as (may Allah be pleased with him) say on his deathbed? • Ibn Al-Qayyim mentions the principal cause of expanding the chest, i.e. Tawhid o NOTE: when we mention “Noor (light)” we do not refer to what the Sufis talk about when they say “noor”, rather we are referring to the Noor (light) of Eemaan. o NOTE: Where did Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami deliver this talk? o The light of Eemaan illuminates and relaxes the heart just as how the physical light relaxes a person as it expands his vision whereas darkness creates unease o The stronger that the Noor of Eemaan is, the greater the relaxation and expansion of the heart • Ibn Al-Qayyim says from among the means of bringing about relaxation of the Chest is “Al-‘Ilm”, The Knowledge. o Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami comments that when Ibn Qayyim says “Knowledge”, he uses the definitive article “Al-(The)”, therefore the meaning of this statement is Knowledge of the Religion is intended, not any knowledge. o Why is this the case? Why is this Knowledge special? o Just as knowledge brings about relaxation to the chest, Ignorance regarding this knowledge of the Religion brings about tightness’ of the chest. This is because one who is ignorant of the religion does not know about Allah, the rights of Allah, who the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) is, the manners of how to deal with other Muslims and with the non-Muslims and how to live life. Therefore, he follows anyone and everyone and so becomes a “yes-man” to whomever calls to him and remains ignorant of the essential parts of his religion. This type of person who has no knowledge and seeks no knowledge, he may eventually take a right which belongs only to Allah and give it to other than Allah (Shirk). o NOTE: The knowledge being discussed here is the “Essential” and mandatory knowledge which a Muslim has no excuse to be ignorant of. We are not intending by this Arabic grammar, or detailed fiqh, but rather we are talking about knowledge which Every Muslim must know, knowledge of Allah, his Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم), the pillars and their rulings, rulings regarding marriage and other things which may affect a person and the Aqeedah which is essential. For example, see “The Three fundamental principles” and “The Book of Tawhid” by Shaikh Muhammad Ibn Abdulwahhaab, these books are short and easy to memorise. Sunday 4 Feb 2018 ✏️ Remedying the Heavy and Tight Chest Lesson 4: The Decree of Allah and free will of the slaves, the effects of Shirk, and the light of Eemaan • Recap of Lesson 3: o The believing slave of Allah has Love, Fear and Hope of Allah, what intensifies these things? o How many types of Guidance are there? What are these? o For Summary of Lesson 3 go to: www.Alhudabolton.com/2018/01/28/2147 • Guidance which a person receives from Allah (Guidance for Success and inspiration), what is an indication that a person has received this? o Sincerity o Following the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) • What are the signs that Allah has not bestowed success upon a person, and that Allah has misguided that person? o The person will find in his chest great difficulty when he wants to fulfil the commandments of Allah o He views the commandments of Allah as shackles from which he wants freedom o These are signs that Allah has forsaken the slave • Allah says: “Have We not opened your breast for you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him))?” [Surah Ash- Sharh (94) verse 1] o What did Shaikh Uthaymeen mentioned about this verse and the meaning of an opened chest? (See Lesson 3), what did the Shaikh say about the two types of Allah’s Judgements o The soul’s desires go against the commandments of Allah (e.g pray, fast, not to do haraam) and prohibitions and so it is important to strive against one’s desires and therefore having Allah’s help in opening your chest is needed. • If a person finds it difficult do what Allah has commanded, he/she needs to run back to Allah • If Allah does not grant a person success in running back to him, then this is an indication that Allah has caused you to become lost and astray o The person who will be guided and the one who will not be guided, these are already written and decreed and is in the knowledge of Allah already. • The Decree of Allah and free will of the slaves: o The perfection of the world we live in and the other signs of Allah, the creator, show us that Allah has perfect knowledge of what happened, what is happening now, and what will happen. This comes from sound reasoning and a person will naturally know this (that this perfect and complex world could not have come about by chance) o Yet also, when one does a deed, it is not by force and so everyone has a free will and a choice between doing good and evil. A person will know this from his/her senses, i.e. that the choices they make are theirs. • The cause and means of Allah saving you from your own evil could be just one dua • Ibn Al-Qayyim says therefore guidance and Tawhid are the greatest means of alleviating the tight and heavy chest • Naturally, innately, you can know that you have a creator. This is tawhid rubuubiyya (Singling out Allah in his Lordship) in one’s reason and is the fitra of a person. o However, having this alone is not enough to cause the chest of a person to be expanded o One must also have tawhid al-uloohiyya (singling out Allah in his worship) in order for his chest to be expanded • The greatest Means of bringing about tightness of the chest is Shirk: o Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al- Jaami says the person who fears other besides Allah, calls others besides Allah, loves others besides Allah (in such a way only Allah should be loved) then his heart is distributed among the people. His heart is therefore in many places and is never in a state of peace and tranquillity. He is always in a state of uneasiness regardless of how calm or happy he may outwardly be. His love is fragmented, his fear is disseminated. o The sinner, but who is a person of tawhid (Islamic monotheism) and worships only one God- Allah, his heart is in a state of peace in comparison to the one who worships many gods or calls on the dead (e.g. Buddhists, Sufis, Shia etc). Saturday 9 Dec 2017 Chapter of Prayer: Funeral Prayer Lesson 47: Shedding tears, Supporting the Family of the deceased, making Duā for the deceased Note: the hadiths from this lesson were taken from the Book Bulūghul Marām • Anas (may Allāh be pleased with him) narrated, “I attended the burial of one of the daughters of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم). He was sitting by the side of the grave and his eyes were shedding tears” [Related by Al-Bukhārī ] o Note: All of the children of the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وسلم) (may Allāh be pleased with them all) died before him except Fatima (may Allāh be pleased with her). o The scholars have differed over which daughter it is in this hadith as there were several daughters (Ruqayya, Umm Kulthuum, and Zainab) who died before him. However, it is mentioned that it being Ruqayya mentioned here is unlikely as the messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وسلم) was away at the battle of Badr. o This hadith also shows that shedding tears at the death of someone is NOT classed as being the same as wailing (see lesson 46). This hadith is mentioned here to show that shedding of tears is permissible and is part of the compassion one has for the deceased and one may not be able to control that emotion. o Likewise, when the son (Ibrahim) of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) died, The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “Indeed the eyes shed tears and the heart is saddened but we do not say anything except that which pleases our Lord and Indeed we are saddened by your departure O Ibrahim” o Likewise, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) also said Allāh does not punish one on account of grief in his heart or for his tears but rather for what he says with his tongue o Likewise, one of the grandchildren of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) was dying and the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) shed tears • Jābir ibn ‘Abdullāh (may Allāh be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “Do not bury your dead during the night unless you have to do so.” [Related by Ibn Mājah. Muslim reported a similar narration, Jābir said in his narration, “The Prophet disapproved that someone is buried at night, unless the funeral prayer has been offered for him”] o What is the ruling on burying at night? (e.g. Harām/forbidden vs makruuh/disliked). Shaykh Al-Fawzān says it is not impermissible to bury someone at night, Abu Bakr was buried at night and also Fatima (may Allāh be pleased with her) was buried by Ali (her husband, may Allāh be pleased with him) also at night. Therefore, these examples indicate that it is not harām/forbidden to bury at night, and the wording of the hadith itself indicates that it is not impermissible (as one cans till di it if necessary) but that burial during daytime is better. o If burying the deceased at night is going to cause problems with shortcoming such as difficulties with the washing, shrouding or the funeral prayer, then it is disliked doing this at night. o However, if there are no such shortcomings when burial at night then it is possible to do it (as it was done for some companions as mentioned) o There are also narrations that the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) also buried some companions at night For More of the written summary visit AlhudaBolton.com
Saturday 2 Dec 2017 Chapter of Prayer: Funeral Prayer Lesson 46: Matters surrounding graves, The Life + trial of the grave and the issue of Wailing Note: the hadiths from this lesson were taken from the Book Bulūghul Marām Lesson 46: • Sa’d Ibn Abī Waqqās (may Allāh be pleased with him) said (during his death illness) “Make a lahd for me and cover it with un-burnt bricks, as you did with the grave of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم).” [Related by Muslim] o Who was Sa’d Ibn Abii Waqqaas? o What did this request mean? What is a Lahd? • Al-Baihaqī translated on the authority of Jābir (may Allāh be pleased with him) a similar narration and added, “and his grave was raised one span from the ground.” [Ibn Hibbān graded it as Sahiih] o NOTE: the surface of the grave is raised one span above the ground so that its location can be known. o This hadith shows that the graves of the Muslims may be as the hadith mentions (i.e.one hand span). HOWEVER, going beyond this is not legislated nor permissible o This (i.e. raising the grave by a hand span) marks it as a grave and prevents people from walking over it or digging into/around it by accident. o Note: This is also how the grave of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) was made. Allah made the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) the best of creation and choose for him the best, then how about the one who says elevating graves beyond this is better?! • Jābir (may Allāh be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) prohibited whitening a grave with plaster, to sit on it or to build over it (such as a dome). [Related by Muslim] o Whitening a grave with plaster: i.e. beautifying it. Modern day examples include using marble material etc. Beatifying a grave can lead to exaggeration in the matter of the grave as it becomes closer to a shrine and attracts people. o NOTE: Building upon a grave includes headstones (this is a very common modern day occurrence na’uudhubillaah). o It is also impermissible to sit on top of the grave area as this against the honour of the deceased. o Islam allows us to bury the person, raise the grave by a hand span, and use some rocks or stone to identify where the head is. This is how the early Muslims including the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) were buried. • ‘Âmir Ibn Rabī’ah (may Allāh be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وسلم) prayed over ‘Uthmān bin Madh’ūn, then went to the grave and sprinkled three handfuls of soil while he was standing. [Related by Ad-Dāraqutnī] o Who was ‘Uthmān bin Madh’ūn? o This hadith shows that this act is a sunnah act. o The handfuls should be full handfuls • ‘Uthmān Ibn ‘Affān (may Allāh be pleased with him) narrated, “Whenever the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وسلم) finished the burial of the dead, he would stand by the grave and say, “Seek forgiveness for your brother and pray for him to be steadfast, because he is now being questioned.” [Related by Abū Dāwūd. Al-Haakim graded it as Sahīh] o This hadith refers to the trial of the grave by the two Angles; Munkar and Nakīr o The deceased (in the life of the grave) hears the footsteps of the people who buried him/her walking away, the two angels come and the trial starts. o What is this trial? o What other things happen during the life of the grave (both good and bad)? o One should therefore not just walk off, but instead remain and make duā for the deceased. o Question: what if the other people do innovated acts as part of a burial, what should one do? o Issue: When making this duā at the grave should you raise your hands up? (=no specific hadith mentioning this) For the rest of this Summary visit AlhudaBolton.com

Saturday 16 Sept 2017 Chapter of Prayer: The Funeral (Janaazah) Prayer • Brief recap of specific prayers we have covered recently • Reminding the dying of the testimony of faith • We have been commanded in the Quran and Sunnah to visit the sick, the reward of doing such an act and the benefits to the ill person • Having hope in Allah, even in the final moments a person who is dying should have good and hopeful thoughts in Allah that he will forgive him and make him/her of those who enter him into paradise • Mannerism of the Muslim when a person dies. o To close the eyes of the deceased if they are open (Narration regarding how the Angel of Death takes the soul) o To NOT delay the burial unnecessarily, bury them as soon as possible. Why is this? (the wisdom behind this is discussed, regarding purpose of Life as a test, the life of the grave (Barzakh), example of Fir’aun/Pharoah and how even if a person isn’t actually buried in a grave they still enter the life of Barzakh, and a reminder of the fire of Hell) o The body of the deceased is washed and shrouded. The men should wash a male deceased and the women wash the female who has died. • How to perform the Funeral Prayer: o The funeral prayer is to be performed outside of the mosque o The deceased (washed and shrouded) is placed at the front o The Imam stands before that body, at the head if it is a man and at the middle if it is a woman o The opening (first) takbir o Read the Fatiha o Another takbir o Read salaah and salaam upon the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) o Third takbir o Now read a supplication for the deceased, ask Allah to forgive him/her , as Allah to enter him/her into paradise o Fourth takbir o Give the Salaam and end the prayer, • There are narrations that say the more people pray in the funeral prayer the better for the deceased • How is the burial carried out: o The grave should be set out so that the head faces the Qiblah o The hole itself should be dug so that a hole is a dug downward and then another hole dug to the side of the base of the first. Alternatively the grave could be dig so that one big hole is dug, and then o What is the reason of digging in such a way? o A coffin is not needed in Islamic way of burial • Once the deceased is buried, everyone should supplicate for them individually, not in congregation • What about consolations? It is permissible to console the family of the deceased HOWEVER what should NOT be done is that the family of the deceased is made to host a large amount of people, and to cook for them etc. this places a burden unnecessarily on that family who now must bear host to large number of guests. Q&A: o How can Muslims bury the deceased without a coffin if living in the UK? o Is a funeral prayer due for a still born baby, e.g. miscarriage? o What if body is burned or damaged? Should we still wash? Next Week Insha Allah: The Funeral Prayer continued (going into details)

Saturday 27 May 2017 – Lesson 4 • Brief recap of previous Lessons • Who are the people who must fast? (see Lesson 1 for more detail) • Who is allowed to miss Fasting? (see Lesson 3 for more detail) • Traveller Recap • The one who has the ability vs the one who does not? • Making the choice whether or not to fast as a traveller if one is able • When does the traveller have to make up the fast (max one year) • What happens if you haven’t made it up even after one year (feed one poor person for every day missed and seek forgiveness) • Making up missed fasts first before doing the 6 days of Shawwaal • Hadith of Aisha (radiallaahu Anhaa) making up her fasts • What happens if a person dies not having made up missed fasts? o Difference of opinion about if a person can make up fasts on behalf of a deceased who had days left to be fasted o Hadith mentioning the above and the opinion in favour o Opinion that it is not permissible to fast on someone else’s behalf o Third opinion, that obligatory fasts (e.g. Fasting for Ramadhaan) cannot be fasted on behalf of someone else, but optional fasts (e.g. due to a vow) are allowed o Some scholars say fasting on behalf of deceased for an obligatory fast is not permissible but feeding the poor on their behalf is allowed o Question from attendees regarding story of one companion • When Ramadhaan finishes, are there other opportunity to fast o There are 3 main acts of worship during Ramadhaan; Fasting, Quran recitation, and prayer o When Ramadhaan finishes, the opportunity to carry out these good acts do not stop o E.g fasting on day of Arafah, day of Ashura, fasting Mondays and Thursdays, full moon days, etc • How Imam Al-Bukhari used to recite the Quran during the month of Ramadhaan • Making the Taraweeh prayer shorter to make it easier for the people e.g. due to difficulty with timing (very short nights etc) • Other types of people who are allowed to miss fasting END OF CHAPTER reached Important additional topics: • Laylatul-Qadr (night of Power), when in Ramadhaan could it be (e.g. Last 10 nights, odd nights in last 10 etc? o What is Laylatul-Qadr ? • Itikaaf (staying in the mosque), o what does the word mean in Arabic o how does one perform it? o Doing Itikaaf time intervals (e.g. full days, or for 2 hours only etc) o What area is a person confined to during itikaaf? • How should the Women do itikaaf? o Scholars say there is no evidence for doing itikaaf at home o they should do itikaaf at the masjid provided family arrangements, masjid facilities are in place and that it is safe for them • Missing fasts due to Pregnancy Q and A: o Question about menstruation and fasting Homework for next week (last lesson insha allah): what are the FIVE Sunnah acts to do on Eid ul-Fitr?
Read Genesis 3:1-6 • God created Adam and Eve. They were complete and lacking nothing. They were at peace and knew the fullness of life with God. • Adam and Eve had clear answers for three key questions in life. o Who am I? (A friend to God created in His image.) o How much do I have? (All that is needed to live well.) o What am I here to do? (Care for God’s creation.) • What trick does the serpent use to entice Eve to eat of the tree? The one thing that Adam and Eve didn’t need and should not have ended up costing them everything. • The serpent’s lie shifted Adam and Eve from peace to discontentment. Suddenly, they were not enough and didn’t have enough. • How does the serpent’s lie speak to us today? • How do we respond? Read Genesis 3:7 • For the first time, Adam and Eve felt the need to hide themselves from each other and the Lord. • The need for approval and the presence of shame entered the world. Take this week to consider how often we act to seek approval or avoid shame. What do we hide from others, God, and ourselves? Are we willing to choose a better motivation in our relationships?
Saturday 20 May 2017 Chapter: Things which Break your Fast • Brief recap of previous Lesson • Removal of blood from the body o Large vs small amount o Medical reason, e.g. blood sample or tooth removal o Accidents • Does vomiting break your fast? o It will break your vomit if it is intentional o Accidental vomiting does not break the fast o Hadeeth regarding this • What about eye/nose/ear drops? Are they allowed during fasting? o Eye and ear drops do not break fasts as they do not have a direct inlet to the stomach, however best to avoid them o Nose drops will break fast as the nose is a direct passage to the stomach o Similarly, when making wudhu water should not be drawn too far into the nose or gargled for the same reason - Hadith • What about the siwak? o It is mustahab (liked) o What about flavoured siwaks? • What about fragrances that are gaseous (e.g. oud, sticks) o Does not necessarily break your fast o However, if fragrance is gas with heavy particles then that can be a problem Things which don’t break the fast but reduce the reward: • “The easiest part of fasting is to stop eating and drinking” • The hardest part to stop is the bad action o Swearing o Back biting o Foolish behaviour o Etc. • The above things (bad speech, foolish behaviour) will reduce your reward for fasting o A person who sins often during fasting may lose all his/her reward for that day • The person who is fasting should try to ensure that he/she uses their time in the remembrance of Allah (doing Dhikr) and other good actions such as o Reading the Quran o Sitting in the mosque o Etc. • Hadith- “whomsoever does not leave the false speech, and acting upon it, and foolishness, then Allah has no need for him to leave his food and drink” Chapter: Making up the days of Ramadhaan o Permissible reasons for missing fasting o Illness (e.g. fasting causes worsening, or pain, or delayed recovery) o Old age, is not able to fast o What about too young an age? i.e. before the age of puberty and unable to fast o Travelling o Menstruation/Post-natal period o What about Pregnancy or breast feeding? Difference of opinion on this o Two types of illness o Short illness and eventual recovery insha Allah- must make up days lost o Long/permeant illness – cannot make up days, must feed a poor person for every day missed o Old age and not able to fast, o If he/she cannot make up days to fast, then feed a person for every day missed o Travelling o If you can fast, then there is a difference of opinion, some scholars say it is a choice, others say better to not fast because Allah has given you ease and you should take it o If unable to fast whilst travelling then you must not fast, and instead make up the days when you are no longer fasting o What about those who travel on purpose to miss fasting, what do the scholars say o What is classed as travel? o Menstruation/Post-natal bleeding, must miss those days and should make them up afterwards o Pregnancy/breastfeeding o Difference of opinion o What if the woman is concerned about her health or that of her baby? o Other cases of making up days for fasting: o Travel that ends midway through a day, fast or not fast? o What about a period that finishes midway through the day, should you continue fasting? o What about a person who ends up swallowing water unexpectedly? (e.g. someone falls into a river, and you decide to help them knowing you inevitably swallow water), continue fasting after? Q and A: o What happens if in your country, it is still 28th days but you travel to a country who are in their 29th day and they spot the moon that day? o Making up day for fasting in case of complex travel (e.g. difference in time between countries) RAMADHAAN IS ABOUT 1 WEEK AWAY insha Allah
Saturday 13 May 2017 Summary of Fiqh: Chapter on Fasting • When the Fasting day begins o The verse “…and Eat and drink until…” [2:187] o Ibn Kathir mentioned that originally the time of breaking was from maghrib until Isha, this ayah abrogated that • It is Mustahab (liked) to have the Suhur before fajr o Hadith of Anas, “Have the Suhur, for indeed there is blessing in the suhur” o To have the suhur even if it is a glass of water o It is Sunnah to have the suhur late, it is a mistake for the people to stop eating long before fajr o What are the benefits of having the suhur? Gives you energy for the day, especially having it late Different from the Jews • If a muslim wakes up in the morning before fajr time enters, and they are upon impurity requiring ghusl (bathing), and making ghusl will mean missing the suhur, what does he/she do? o The ruling is to have the suhur first o This is because suhur must be had before fajr, but this ghusl can be made after fajr without preventing fast • When to make intention for fasting o Every day before fast starts? o At the start of month only? o How it should be made (e.g. within one’s mind? Or saying it out loud) • It is Sunnah to open your fast (iftaar) as soon as the sun has set and not to delay it o Delaying it is incorrect o Hadith of Sahl Ibn Sa’d “The people will remain upon goodness as long as they hasten the iftaar” o Other hadith to stress this point, that iftaar should not be delayed • What should the fast be opened with at iftaar? o Moist Dates and water [Hadith of Anas] o Not to have a big meal before praying maghrib first o Benefits of breaking Fast with dates and water • It is Sunnah to invite people for iftaar o There is a reward for opening the fast for another person • Question: “is it allowed to break your fast with dates and fruits” • Question about medications, e.g. Iftaar and having tablets that must be taken on an empty stomach before any food • Question about the iftaar in the Masjid Al-Haraam CHAPTER: What things break your Fast • Fasting has certain things which will break it, and every muslim needs to be aware • Fasting can be broken by two routes, taking something out from the body or taking something into it • What things break your fast? o Intercourse is Prohibited during fasting, and the person must make it up, and will also need to give an expiation (Freeing a slave or to fast two consecutive months or Feeding 60 poor people). o Release of Seminal fluid (with desire) breaks your fast. Any day broken needs to be made up for, however no expiation is required. Wet dreams are not considered to break your fast o Eating and drinking on Purpose breaks the fast and incurs a sin. The day needs to be made up for. If one forgets however, the fast is still valid and does not need to be made up. If it was due to forgetfulness, then the person MUST stop eating/drinking the moment they remember they are fasting. o Water entering through the nose breaks the fast, e.g. when making wudhu. Therefore, when fasting we should NOT gargle or sniff the water too forcefully. However, if it is genuinely unintentional, then it does not break the fast. Questions from attendees regarding the gargling of water, swallowing saliva and using toothpaste/mouthwash. o Taking injections that have nutritional value (provides energy) will break the fast o Having blood sample taken e.g. blood sample taken by doctors, breaks your fast. This will fatigue the body and make it harder to fast. However, if the sample is very small volume, then some scholars say it does not break the fast. • Q & A: o Question from attendees about using asthma inhalers whilst fasting o What if someone has a Nosebleed whilst fasting o What about pregnancy, is it compulsory to fast? o What about breast feeding and fasting? NEXT WEEK insha Allah: we will continue with the topic of what breaks the fast
Saturday 25 March 2017 Chapter: Women’s attendance in Mosques The verse: “Whoever works righteousness, whether male or female, while he (or she) is a true believer verily, to him We will give a good life, and We shall pay them certainly a reward in proportion to the best of what they used to do. (An-Nahl 16:97) • Islam confers honour and respect upon the women • They are permitted to attend the mosque • If the women seek permission to attend the mosque it is detested to prevent them, even if is at night. • What is ruling on wearing perfume when going to the mosque? o What about wearing beautiful clothing? • What is the ruling on mixing with the men? • Issues to consider for women when going out of the house o Dignity and shyness o Appropriate Clothing o Not using Perfume o Issue of mixing with men • Is it better to pray in the mosque or to pray at home? • When is the Husband allowed to refuse his wife going out? Chapter: The Rulings on the Imam “The reward of him (the imam) is like that of those who perform the prayer behind him” “Three persons will be on the hillock of Musk on the Day of Resurrection: the person who leads the people in prayer and they are pleased with him…” • Being an Imam is a great responsibility. • The prophet, peace be upon him, was the imam during this time. o Who became imam after his death? • There are narrations about the virtues of the imam • Who has the greatest right to being imam? o The one with the best Tajweed o He should have knowledge of the Fiqh of the prayer o If the two imams have equal memorisation of the Qur’an – who should lead? o In the case, where they are of similar knowledge – who should then lead? o What is the evidence for this order? • What are the different types of “lahn” mispronunciation? o Which ones prevent you from leading? • Q&A: • Evidence for the married being preferred as Imam over the unmarried • Does the bearded one have preference/right to lead over the clean shaven one? • What if there is already an appointed Imam? • Can you pray behind an Imam who you are unsure about (e.g. innovation, clothes below ankles)? • What about the people being pleased with the Imam? • Purpose of seeking knowledge Homework for next week: What is the Evidence for the married one being preferred as Imam over the unmarried one
O What a Standing is Mine? Right to be present Right to Speak Right to Fellowship
Saturday 18 March 2017 Chapter: The Latecomer to the Congregational Prayer • You can only be considered to have caught the congregational Prayer if you have caught at least one Raka’ah (e.g. the last) o What happens if you catch less than the last raka’ah • Whoever catches the Rukuu’ (bowing), catches the raka’ah o Hadith of Abu Bakrah Evidence that catching the rukuu’ catches the raka’ah Importance of not running to the mosque • What happens if you arrive and you fear you may not catch the rukuu’, o You can make just one takbiiratul Ihram and immediately join rukuu’ o If you have time, you can make one takbir to join the prayer (takbiiratul Ihram) and then Make another to join the rukuu’ • If the Imam is concluding the prayer with tasleem, but you missed some raka’ah, at what point do you get up? o When he says the first salaam? o Or when he says the second (completely finishes)? • When you join the prayer, that raka’ah is considered as your first o What about the number of tashahuds? (e.g. 3) • What to do when you join late onto a loud prayer (e.g. maghrib)? o Do you recite fatiha if you missed hearing it? Difference of opinion among the scholars o What about joining late onto the quiet prayers? • The IMPORTANCE in congregational prayers that the one behind the imam follows the Imam and does not go ahead of him o The hadith warning those who go ahead of the Imam o Four possible scenarios regarding following the Imam: To go ahead of the Imam [Incorrect] To go equal with the Imam [Incorrect] To follow the Imam [Correct] To lag behind the Imam and being too slow [Incorrect] o Hadith of Umar when he saw a man going ahead of the Imam o Many people are heedless and lax about this issue and it threatens their prayer o The statement of Ibn Taymiyah regarding the one who goes ahead of the Imam o Going ahead of the Imam is Haraam (agreement of all scholars) • Q&A o When you join the prayer late, do you read the opening dua? o If you come late and miss a raka’ah for a loud prayer, should you read out loud by yourself when you get up to make up your lost raka’ah? o Praying the Janaza (funeral) prayer without the body of the deceased o What about if you miss the Janaza prayer for someone, can you make up for it? o Lining up the Rows via the ankles o What Gap should there be when a person stands to pray? Wide stance vs narrow? What about the statement of some people that there should be 4 finger gap between the feet? o Bad smells such as Smoking and Garlic, can a person attend the prayer?
