MOVIE MIKE'S MOVIE PODCAST: Mike was recently inspired by the Paul Reubens’ documentary after learning about Pee Wee’s Big Adventure being such an important first film for Tim Burton. He shared what directors he believes made the biggest splashes with their debut studio films, why he thinks the Oscars are wrong about animation and what new directors are just heating up. In the Movie Review, Mike talks about The Phoenician Scheme from one of his favorite directors Wes Anderson. Benicio Del Toro plays a wealthy and maligned industrialist Zsa Zsa Korda , who, after surviving one too many assassination attempts by rivals, names his forgotten daughter as his sole heir-over his eight sons. Mike talks about if Wes Anderson is still cool, where it ranks among his most recent films and why Michael Cera was born for this role. In the Trailer Park, Mike and Kelsey talk about Wicked: For Good, going to see Wicked on Broadway this summer and how it lines up with The Wizard of Oz. New Episodes Every Monday! Allison Kaplan Sommer and Noah Efron talk about (1) whether and how this week's war on Iran reshapes our understanding of the more than 20 months of war in Gaza that preceded it, and (2) what we can learn from a moving essay by American journalist Isaac Saul called, “I think I'm Leaving Zionism, or Zionism is Leaving Me.” All this and what we learn about Iran from the Persians living among us, and music by these self-same Persians. In a prior episode, designer and illustrator Matt Stevens talked about why 2022's The Batman is such a great movie and how it has some elements from David Fincher's Se7en plus inspirations from various Batman sources, creating a unique vision. Matt does something similar in his own work. His latest project, Good Movies as Old Books from Chronicle Books reimagines films as vintage book covers. In that prior episode, Matt also talked about taking risks, going out on his own, leaving the agency world behind, and various side projects. Here, Matt discusses how maybe, sometimes a side project that looks and feels fun may not be a success but the momentum and direction it gives you could still have value. He also shares his opinions about two summer movies, Superman and The Fantastic Four.-Matt Stevens found himself frustrated with his current job as creative director at a brand agency, so he (literally) went back to the drawing board with an illustration project that turned out to be the perfect fit, designing a Nike Air Max shoe every day. After doing 50 drawings, he had initially chosen to end the project, but aimed for 100 AirMax1-a-day drawings that he'd showcase in an art book, accompanying website, and exhibition, also proved rewarding. To date, he's created multiple, self-initiated projects, including the Good Movies as Old Books project, now a book and postcard set available from Chronicle.https://www.goodmoviesasoldbooks.com/https://www.hellomattstevens.com/https://www.hellomattstevens.com/book-covers-varioushttps://www.hellomattstevens.com/store/batman-xwms5https://www.hellomattstevens.com/store/batman-xwms5-gnyzehttps://www.hellomattstevens.com/new-project-2https://www.hellomattstevens.com/blog/process-the-rookie-handbook-Taking Side Projects to the Next Level, HOW magazinehttps://drive.google.com/file/d/1tXNGjxQv4jwbf77DJOffXpENtbJwcPPH/view?usp=sharingMatt Stevens on The Great Discontenthttps://thegreatdiscontent.com/interview/matt-stevens/-Other movies and shows discussed, alphabetical listThe Batman (2022)Breaking Bad (2008-2013)The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025)Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985)Se7en (1995)Superman (2025)

Paco and George watched the 2025 Matt Wolf two-part Paul Ruebens doc on HBO.This is prime Gen X imprinting, Paul Reubens' real life definitively laid out for the picking. The impish Reubens created his signature Pee-Wee Herman stage show as a cult Hollywood underground theater piece in 1981, but it didn't take much time for the world to catch on thanks to 1985's Pee-wee's Big Adventure, also the feature film debut of director Tim Burton. We talk about his comedy origins, the cultural impact of Pee-wee's Playhouse, and how Reubens blurred the line between persona and performer. Pee-wee Herman, the quirky, bow-tied man-child brought to life by Paul Reubens, revolutionized children's television and pop culture by refusing to fit into any traditional box. With Pee-wee's Playhouse, Reubens created a technicolor world that was as smart as it was silly—mixing slapstick, surrealism, and subversion with genuine warmth and creativity. The show wasn't just for kids; it was a layered, artful spectacle that celebrated difference, encouraged imagination, and featured a wildly diverse cast before that was common. Pee-wee became a cultural icon because he gave audiences permission to be weird, to laugh loud, and to embrace joy without irony. His influence can still be seen in everything from alt-comedy to design to how we talk about identity and play. Part review, part tribute, this episode is a celebration of a singular, subversive icon who never stopped being a kid at heart. A very private Reubens faces his own internal battles even while doing interviews with doc director Matt Wolf, right before his death in 2023. This two-part series is moving and joyous, but also heart-breaking look at the man who truly was "a loner, Dottie."George's article about the Pee-wee radio showMeeting Ric Heitzman at his gallery show closing.Paco's video for Sal & MitziSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Filmmaker Matt Wolf is here to chat about his Paul Reubens documentary: Pee-Wee as Himself and the challenges of going toe to toe with the bowtied artist himself.More about Pee-Wee as HimselfPee-wee as Himself is the definitive story of the artist and performer Paul Reubens and his indelible alter ego Pee-wee Herman. Rubens' first film Pee-wee's Big Adventure and his children's television series Pee-wee's Playhouse were cultural touchstones of the 1980s. However, when Reubens was arrested for indecent exposure, the strict separation he created between himself and his alter ego backfired.Prior to his recent death, Reubens spoke in-depth about the kaleidoscopic influences that inspired his groundbreaking work, and the personal tribulations he faced to persevere as an artist. As somebody who lost control of his personal narrative in the media, Reubens found himself at odds with the documentary process. But at the end of his life, he took a leap of faith, and decided that the film should be finished.Find us atwww.werewatchingwhat.com instagram.com/werewatchingwhattiktok.com/@werewatchingwhatTHEDHK can be found at instagram.com/thedhk , twitter.com/thedhk, and facebook.com/thedhkmovies

Pee-Wee As Himself is an HBO Max two-part documentary exploring the life and career of Paul Reubens, known for his character Pee-wee Herman. Directed by Matt Wolf, Pee-wee as Himself is constructed around over 40 hours of candid interviews with Reubens, conducted before his passing in 2023. The film delves into his early influences in circus and avant-garde theater, his meteoric rise with Pee-wee's Playhouse and Pee-wee's Big Adventure, and the deliberate separation he maintained between his personal identity and his Pee-wee persona. The documentary also addresses the controversies that impacted Reubens' career, including his 1991 arrest and the 2002 charges related to vintage erotica, which were later dropped. In a poignant final audio message recorded shortly before his death, Reubens reflects on the pain of being misunderstood and emphasizes the importance of self-acceptance and non-conformity—a message he consistently aimed to impart to his audience. Joining Kate is two-time Emmy and Grammy award-winning comedian Kathy Griffin, one of Paul Reubens good friends. I grew up on Route 66 and have road trips in my veins. I've driven all over this great country, visited every single state and seen thousands of interesting things. Nothing inspires me more than a good road trip film — if you're the same way, check out one of this week's recommendations. All of the my picks on this week's list are pretty well known, which makes them so much fun to revisit. If you haven't seen one or all of them in a few years, what better time to revisit them?Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985)There's nothing Pee-wee Herman loves more than his bicycle. Unfortunately for him, spoiled frenemie Francis Buxton loves it to, and hires someone to steal it for him. A distraught Pee-wee organizes a search party to find his bicycle and eventually hits the road and crosses multiple states in search of his irreplicable bike. Join Pee-wee and all the friends he meets along the way as he goes on his adventure. The Muppet Movie (1979)Life's like a movie, write your own ending! In the first full-length Muppet film, Kermit is convinced by a lost agent to head to Hollywood to fulfill his dream of making millions of people happy. Along his journey, Kermit meets a joke-telling bear named Fozzie, a weirdo named Gonzo, a rock band called the Electric Mayhem (led by Dr. Teeth), and the world's most beautiful women, Miss Piggy. Will Kermit and his friends reach Hollywood before Doc Hopper catches Kermit and forces him to become the mascot for his restaurant? I hope so, because there are a lot more Muppet movies after this one! The NeverEnding Story (1984)While hiding from school bullies, young Bastion acquires a book promising a never ending story and skips school, hiding in the attic to read it. The book tells the story of Atreyu and his quest to save Fantasia from a darkness known as The Nothing. The more Bastian reads, the more it seems his own life is becoming entertwined with the book itself! Featuring a hit theme song and a luck dragon, The NeverEnding Story is a journey not to be missed. National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)If you've ever gone on a road trip, either as a child or a parent, you'll relate to the Griswolds as they drive across the country in their new station wagon from Chicago to Wallyworld! Directed by Harold Ramis and starring Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, Anthony Michael Hall, and Dana Barron, and Randy Quaid, and featuring cameos from comedians including Eugene Levy and John Candy, among others. As a kid I identified as oldest sibling Rusty, and as a parent I can't help but see a little bit of Clark in the rearview mirror.Spring is here and there's no better time to roll down your windows, put the pedal to the metal, and hit the open road. If you can't fit a road trip into your current schedule, watching one of these movies about journeys is the next best thing! This is a public episode. On July 30th, 2023 we lost Paul Reubens, perhaps better known by his television and movie persona, Pee-wee. In his honor, we watched Pee-wee's Big Adventure and recorded an episode in November 2023. It's very tasteful. Then, it sat in a folder on our "internal servers" and we forgot to air it. Until now. Ok fiends, it's almost St. Patrick's day so this month we're recapping the 1993 classic (and this one really is a classic) Leprechaun! This Episode is one that our patrons have had access to since 2021 and we are now very excited to make it available to everyone. We did record a new 30 Minute Horror Movie on Leprechaun 4: In Space and you can find it over on our Patreon! Back to this episode on the very first Leprechaun - The film features a very young Jennifer Anniston, the guy that played Francis in Pee Wee's Big Adventure, and Warwick Davis (the hardest working little person in show business) in a horrible mask. Leprechaun takes us on an insane journey that asks the question "what would happen if we made leprechauns awful?" quite a lot, as it turns out. This film was surprisingly funny, whether it meant to be so or not is up for interpretation. Either way, it's great, crazy, seasonal fun and we recommend you give it a watch after listening to us yell about it in a real hurry. Enjoy fiends! WWBD Merch Buy your WWBD swag here! As a boy, Danny Elfman showed no interest in music, but he's made up for it ever since, earning Grammy and Emmy awards, Oscar nominations, and the roar of the crowd in live concerts around the world. His historic collaboration with director Tim Burton began with Pee-wee's Big Adventure and shows no signs of stopping. His theme music for The Simpsons is just one way he remains in our consciousness between film scoring gigs. Leonard and Jessie love his passion for what he does—and does so well.
