Col. Ret. Michael Medgyessy, former CIO at Air Force Intelligence, joined us at Nutanix .NEXT to reflect on his career and share forward-thinking strategies for modernizing defense infrastructure. Medgyessy offered a behind-the-scenes look at how Air Force Intelligence deployed Nutanix solutions to support distributed services, increase resilience and streamline operations. He highlighted the power of hyperconverged infrastructure and software-defined storage to enable seamless failover and continuity across missions. He also explored how modern IT environments are helping services break away from legacy, monolithic systems and provided advice to federal CIOs as they continue on their modernization journeys. He emphasized the importance of an “invisible” infrastructure for end users and reducing administrative overhead across classification levels through scalable platforms.

My special guest is John Guerra who's here to discuss his new book about U.S. Air Force Major George Filer who was among the generation of pilots and airmen who first became aware of the strange aircraft showing up in the Earth's atmosphere after World War II. About the book: These men - military professionals who flew planes, commanded ships, served as radar operators and air traffic controllers at air fields around the world - began to whisper amongst themselves about encounters with suspected extraterrestrial aircraft. During secret debriefings at U.S. bases, pilots and air crew told their commanders of seeing strange lights at night and in the daylight, groups of saucer- or cigar-shaped craft that easily paced them just a few yards off their plane's wingtip.Award-winning investigative reporter John Guerra spent four years interviewing Filer, a decorated intelligence officer. From objects in the skies over Cold War Europe to a UFO overflight during the Cuban Missile Crisis to strange lights over the DMZ during the Tet Offensive, Filer leaves nothing out about his Air Force UFO encounters, providing Guerra all the amazing details of his six decades investigating extraterrestrials and their craft. Filer's most memorable case - the shooting of an alien at Fort Dix Army Base in 1978 - is fully recounted for the first time in this book.Filer – who readers have seen on countless UFO documentaries – is also a member of the Disclosure Project, the famous panel of military experts, astronauts, and scientists that urges the U.S. government to release all it knows about UFOs to the public. Then, in the fall of 2017, the Pentagon released the F-18 gun camera footage of what can only be described as an extraterrestrial vehicle outperforming U.S. Navy fighters off San Diego. For the first time, after decades of denying what its intelligence officers, pilots, base commanders and air traffic control personnel know to be true, the military finally admitted to what Filer describes in this incredible book. Send us a textWelcome back to the conclusion of a special two part show with former FBI Special Agent, Zach Schoffstall. You never embarrass the bureau! The truth and facts of a case be damned! That is what happened to my guest at the end of his FBI career. Let's take a closer look at my guest on the show today. Zach started serving his country as an intelligence officer in the United States air force where he was stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan for four years. He then continued to serve his country transitioning from his military career to becoming a special agent in the FBI where he served for 16 years. While at the FBI, Zach rose to the rank of Supervisory Special Agent working at a variety of work locations throughout the United States and variety of assignments including, teaching practical applications, tactics, and firearms, SWAT operator and team leader, being on the Joint Terrorism Task Force, Safe Streets Gang Task Force, DEA Narcotics Task Force, and Virginia State Police Narcotics Task Force, and eventually Provided leadership as the Supervisory Senior Special Agent in charge of all counterterrorism and criminal investigations in North Idaho.  Due to a series of events that were politically motivated, and illegal, his life was turned upside down and was eventually terminated for upholding the law and doing the right thing. This is a story of corruption and abuse of power that went to the top of the FBI food chain. Zach and his family were punished for him standing up to his corrupt supervisors who bent to political pressure, instead of following the law and doing the right thing. Zach never imagined that “Never embarrass the bureau” mantra would have cost him so much and forced him into being a whistleblower, and eventually costing him his distinguished career. This week's episode will dive deeper into the ugly circumstances that cost this good man his career. Never embarrass the bureau, Zach never thought by standing up and doing the right thing would send his career into a tailspin and cost him his job and much more. In today's episode we discuss:.·      The summer of 2022 pride event in Idaho. The FBI monitoring general threat traffic.·      A threat of ANTIFA. ·      A call came in that a group of individuals were coming in a U-Haul wearing masks and carrying shields and poles. The chief arrested everyone for conspiracy to riot with no probable cause.·      The next few days you were doing updates with HQ and the US Attorney's office. There was an Assistant USA whose daughter was going through transition and wanted to throw the book at them.·      Counter terrorism was aware of this group and they were known to be non-violent. ·      The three-way call between you, FBI management, and US Attorney's office. Including FBI HQ rep.·      Behind all of this was an AUSA, FBI management, and Female FBI supervisor were scheming to have a female FBI agent to swear to the warrant, even though she didn't know the facts.·      Zach was taken off the case and they handed it off to another group of FBI agents. Ordered not to talk about it. ·      What retaliation from the FBI looks like.·      “You don't embarrass the bureau.”Visit Zach on Instagram at zach_schoffstallCheck out the new Cops and Writers YouTubWhat would you do if you lost the one you loved the most? Brian Morra joins us again to talk about his followup to his successful thriller The Able Archers. Brian's new book, The Righteous Arrows, takes the story to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, an event that previewed the wars following the attacks of September 11, 2001. Brian is a highly decorated former American intelligence officer and a retired aerospace executive. He is the author of the award-winning Able Archers series of historical thrillers. Brian bases his book's characters on himself and on people he encountered as an intelligence officer. He also brings into play countries and places that he knows firsthand in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. His books are based on real events but read like page-turning thrillers. Brian has written numerous articles for national publications and is an on-air expert in the new Netflix series on the Cold War called Turning Point: The Bomb and the Cold War. He also contributed his extensive expertise to the newly released CNN/BBC documentary called Secrets and Spies: A Nuclear Game.  After collaborating to thwart nuclear war in The Able Archers, Kevin Cattani and his Soviet counterpart, Ivan Levchenko, developed a deep mutual respect—but in The Righteous Arrows they are working against each other. Cattani, despite serious misgivings, conducts a perilous covert mission inside a Soviet bunker and barely escapes with his life, putting himself on a collision course with Levchenko. Their ultimate confrontation comes on a battlefield during the brutal Soviet war in Afghanistan, where Levchenko issues the American an ominous warning that will echo for decades. Foreshadowing the global war on terror, former Air Force Intelligence officer Brian Morra illuminates the stubbornly persistent rivalry between the US and Russia in this heart-stopping story of international espionage and war. A'ndre and Brian discuss heightened tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union during the mid-1980s, outlining the motivations behind why the U.S. Government decided to arm the mujahideen 'resistance' against the Soviet military. Brian outlines why the U.S. Government's failure to ponder the 'day after' a Soviet defeat is an example of the law of unintended consequences -- given the rise of extremist Islamic militant groups in Afghanistan such as Al Qaeda and the Taliban. Jeannie DelGreco, a Lafayette realtor with eXp Realty, joins Discover Lafayette to share her rich and storied entrepreneurial journey in sales. While Jeannie's current career today as a mom and realtor with eXp Realty is fulfilling and successful, in this interview, Jeannie looks back at the various lessons learned and experiences she survived that made her the person she is today. And to put it into perspective, Jeannie is a highly successful real estate agent with eXp Realty, being ranked in 2023 by the firm as the #4 sales agent in Lousiana and #2 in Acadiana with $14 million in sales volume. While Jeannie has never thought of herself as a sales person, she remembers as a child launching a small business selling Mother of Thousands (Kalanchoe laetivirens) plants door to door all on her own. She says, "It was a brave thing to do, knocking on doors to sell the baby plants I had placed in small egg cartons, asking people to buy one for 25 cents or 4 for $1.00! At LSU as a student, she similarly worked with a friend, painting t-shirts or party cups for sorority events to earn extra spending money. One summer changed Jeannie's life trajectory when she was asked to spend the summer with her mother's close friend from New Iberia, Sandra DeBlanc, who lived in Columbus, Ohio, who was employed as Director of Sales for Victoria's Secret Catalog. Sandy had served in the Air Force Intelligence during the Vietnam War, and was a wonderful role model for this young girl who needed a bit of direction. Sandy hired Jeannie to join the sales force team for Victoria's Secret Catalog for the summer and she was on her way to learning customer relations. During the time Jeannie worked for Victoria's Secret Catalog, it was before the internet became a dominant method way to make sales, and people had to phone in their orders. Catalogs were mailed out weekly and the sales force in Columbus were mainly college girls such as Jeannie. She loved the work and learned how build rapport with customers. She learned how to deal with people who were calling in angry about an order that had gone awry, as well as those who were just shopping, asking for assistance. Jeannie found it natural and easy to describe the garments, get the customers to envison themselves in an outift, and suggest ways to finish a look, encouraging customers to buy more, thereby increasing average order volume. She remained in Columbus, and attended The Ohio State University studying business, marketing, and human resources. "I loved the sales work at Victoria's Secret Catalog, and I also learned key lessons from my mom's friend, Sandy, who taught me that you have to pay your dues in the work place. Don't expect to come in and be promoted right away. You have to earn your position." On the day of Jeannie's graduation from Ohio State University, her parents were in town and attended a festival with her. While enjoying the festival, she met a milliner named Patricia Shypertt who made custom hats and holding a raffle to give away a flat travel hat to the lucky winner. Lo and behold, Jeannie won the hat and started a conversation with the milliner inquiring about her practice of designing hats. This serendipitous event led Jeannie down another path, where she decided to become a milliner. She quit her job at Victoria's Secret Catalog, became a waitress to support herself, and started making custom hats in Columbus, Ohio. Jeannie on graduation day with mentor Sandra DeBlanc "I had always had this idea that to be artistic, it had to begin when you were very young. You couldn't change course in your 20's. Patricia (the milliner who mentored Jeannie) was in her 40's and she said, 'Oh no, I just learned how to do this two or three years ago. I'll help you in any way I can." After Jeannie began garnering clients, her parents wanted to invest in her company, and took her on a buying trip to New York City. While there,

Welcome to Mysteries to Die For and this Toe Tag.I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is normally a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you at the heart of mystery, murder, and mayhem. Today is a bonus episode we call a Toe Tag. It is the first chapter from a fresh release in the mystery, crime, and thriller genre.Today's featured release is DEADLY DEPTHS by John F. Dobbyn The Deadly Depths was released August 1 from Oceanview Publishing and is available from AMAZON LINK and other book retailers. It is available in print, e-book and audio book.About John F. DobbynBest-selling author John F. Dobbyn, a graduate of Harvard College, Boston College Law School, and Harvard Law School, is a former professor of law at Villanova Law School where he taught criminal, constitutional, and corporate law. Prior to his teaching career, Dobbyn practiced criminal and civil trial work. He is a frequent contributor to Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine and Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine, and he is the author of five award-winning legal thrillers featuring Michael Knight and Lex Devlin. Dobbyn is a Boston native and now resides in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Lois.TG Wolff ReviewDEADLY DEPTHS is a genre crosser. It can be found under Amateur Sleuth mystery and murder thriller. I would classify it as an Adventure bookended by Amateur Sleuth. Archeologist Barrington “Barry” Holmes is dead. With a slit wrist, the police rule it suicide. Holmes's protégé, Matthew Shane, former Air Force Intelligence and current professor of law, calls bullshit. The path to resolving Holmes's death puts him face-to-face with a voodoo curse, a notorious antiquities dealer and a three hundred-and fifty-year-old promise between the leader of the Aztec people and the famous Englishman, Captain Henry Morgan. Bottom line: DEADLY DEPTHS is for you if you like treasure hunts, a jumble of altruistic, self-serving, and devious characters, and murder of the lowest degree. Strengths of the story. There are several things to love about DEADLY DEPTHS. First in my book is the treasure seeking adventure. Lovers of Indiana Jones stories, “National Treasure”, and “The DaVinci Code” will enjoy the mix of folk lore, voodoo, pirates, and the potential of a treasure of incomparable value. The clues are cryptic yet meaningful. The locations are grounded in real history. The characters are distinct and true to their nature—for good or for bad.The pacing is strong. Once picked up, this is a hard one to put down. While this story does not have the time deadline common in this genre, there is a sense of being up against a ticking clock. For most of the book, there is a sense of an unseen hand manipulating the situation, creating the feeling of a race but against an invisible competitor. .Where the story fell short of ideal: As noted, this story crosses genres. It stands strongly but readers focusing on only one of the genres may find areas for complaining. The story begins as an Amateur Sleuth, creating the impetus for starting the Adventure. Then Adventure takes over, driving most of the book. Only after the Adventure is nearing completion is the original mystery resolved. Adverture lovers could scoff at the time to get the Adventure going. Mystery lovers could do the same for pursuit of the murder. If those genre-specific expectations are put aside, DEADLY DEPTHS is a very satisfying read. That wraps up this Toe Tag of...

Are we living in the most dangerous year in history? Or was that 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis? According to former Air Force Intelligence Officer Brian J. Morra, the answer is neither -- rather, it was 1983. Brian makes this case, outlining how the United States and the Soviet Union narrowly avoided nuclear catastrophe, after months of tensions, tough rhetoric, and a tragic shoot-down of a Korean civilian airliner. Burn Bag host A'ndre chats with Brian about these events, dramatized in his new book, The Able Archers, based on Brian's own experiences working on intelligence issues during this time period. Brian shares why the Soviets believed that the United States was willing to launch a first strike under the Presidency of Ronald Reagan, whose tough rhetoric against the Kremlin led to heightened paranoia in the mind of dying Soviet Leader Yuri Andropov. This paranoia came to a head  in September, when a lone Soviet officer prevented a nuclear war scare after a series of false alarms, and in November, when a NATO exercise caused the Soviets to bolster their nuclear posturing in fears that the United States was actually about to launch a first strike. Many of these events came to light decades after 1983, but Brian shares these stories and more in this fascinating episode. You can purchase Brian's book,The Able Archers, here.

How do you build 2 successful startups and how significant are the mindset and desire along the way?   Natan grew up next to his granddad's wood shop, always building things with his hands. At the same time, his dad, who was an engineer, taught him  about  programming, and he started doing that at an early age as well. As a teenager, he was interested in getting stuff done with more people, so he started his first company at the age of 17, and caught the Entrepreneurship Bug. Still being a highschool student, he came to experience a totally different world of meetings and thinking as the COO of the company, the things he only saw in movies before.   After he graduated high school, he served in the Air Force Intelligence, where he did operational and  technical roles, which meant a lot of responsibility on his hands. When he finished his service, he stepped out to a different world - it was the end game of the “.com” era, and he found himself writing a lot of code. He was drawn mostly to embedded systems - he liked the combination of hardware and software.  One friend sent him to the IDC, because he was interested in their scholarship for entrepreneurship, tech and leadership and asked Natan to take the application forms for him. As he helped his friend he thought to himself - why wouldn't I fill one for myself as well? At the time Natan was studying political science at the Open University Of Israel - Jean-Jacques Rousseau was as exciting to him as c++, but at the end - he found himself getting the scholarship and reevaluating his direction. He decided to do his Bachelor Degree in computer science.   He met Eyal Toledano in this program - a good friend and his co-founder. Both of them were in love with mobile, and searched together for what was most interesting for them. Natan managed to work during his studies full time. They were working on getting downloadable apps on mobile phones in the early 2000, when mobile phones mostly knew how to send text messages and do very simple things. Then came the 2008 crash, and while they had great ideas, they couldn't raise money.  Samsung reached them, as they had no R&D in Israel at the time, and although they were dreaming of making a company of their own, Samsung managed to convince them to join.  And so, at the age of 23-25 - Natan found himself being the GM for the mobile division for Samsung in Israel, an experience which he describes as his Grad School.   Moving to the US After 5 years in Samsung, Natan decided he wanted to try and build a company of his own. He came to the conclusion that for that he needed to become a VC or work in a VC, which in retrospect he suggests not to do. He met Harel Margalit. and joined JVP as EIR, where he had a lot of freedom to do what was interesting to him, when his wife was accepted to do her MBA in MIT - an opportunity of a lifetime.  It was a no brainer, and he decided to put his work aside and come with her.   That's how he landed in Boston. At first, he was confused and didn't quite know what to do after working in tech for a decade, but he knew this could be a fresh start for him. He thought he might try MIT as well, the Media lab specifically. At the same time, he started working with Prof. Rodney Brooks, whose company is responsible for iRobot & rumba, and pioneering robotics in general. Meeting Prof. Rodney was like meeting Michael Jordan for a basketball fan, as he was a very impactful and known figure in the worlds of machine learning and artificial intelligence.  Natan joined him in the new company he was building that signaled the dawn of collaborative robots, robots that would be safe to interact with humans and would be programmed by teaching.   He was 29 years old at the time, and after considering the tradeoffs he decided to join MIT, and his amazing journey there started, which ended with a PhD. He found new opportunities for himself from within the realm of the unknown. Natan explains that he appreciates the beauty in the dichotomy of the entrepreneur, of “organized chaos” - he didn't have a solid plan, but he had his anchors. He came in with the mentality of - “we'll figure it out. In the worst case - I'll get a job in a big company. And I tell that to new employees as well - people have the wrong impression of how risk works - because in the worst case you'll go back to the market and get a normal job.”   This belief is crucial for entrepreneurs, because we need to navigate all the time within the unknown, we can't have it all planned out and go exactly according to plan. We need to have trust in ourselves and believe in our abilities, and know from that deep place that no matter what, we'll figure it out.   Product-Market fit Media lab is a very hands-on place at MIT where you can explore and have a lot of creative freedom, and also get sponsors who come from industry and interact with the students. Natan came to MIT after decades of experience in engineering, and shares that it's difficult to unthink this way of doing things, so the entrepreneurial mindset never really left him.  He was working on projected augmented reality, and created Formlabs with two of his classmates.   Today, Formlabs is a decade old company with 700+ people, selling over 100,000 printers for design and engineering, but also for dental care. It became a Unicorn. “You can't really plan which company will hit its product market fit and when.” - Their decision to put their complex and expensive HW - SW product on Kickstarter was a risk, as the platform wasn't really used to that type of product - but it turned out to be a huge success, with 3M$ of product orders - that was an early product-market fit for them.   “No regret decision” Natan made the difficult decision to leave Formlabs and found Tulip, and shared that:” it was a moment that Jeff Bezos defines as a “no regret decision”, where you don't evaluate your decision based on what you know now, but based on thinking how regretful would you be if you looked back as an 90 years old man at this choice.” Formlabs was pretty stable, and Natan realized that this is the chance to build a very important second company, he couldn't imagine a reality where someone else does this instead of him - so he went all in. “It doesn't mean that you're comfortable and know exactly all the things about the decision, but the conviction that this is something worthwhile building was extremely clear.”   Managing it all Having 2 companies, a wife who's also a very busy executive and kids - how do you manage all the stress of having so many balls in the air at the same time? Natan shares that for him it didn't become so stressful overnight. He made the progress and the building of the company slowly and gradually on purpose - his bar for building a platform was very high, and he was preparing for the longhall.   As for the stress, he shares that for him there's only one thing that can give you balance, and that's the people around you - the family, his teams, the investors. Even as for stepping down from an operational type of role in Formlabs, it wouldn't have been possible without a great co-founder on the other hand.   When I asked Natan about navigating between his personal and professional life, he shared that he grew up with 4 siblings and 2 hardworking parents, so the idea of a demanding career and kids together was not foreign to him, it's just life.  The practical reality is that as parents you take turns and cover for each other - there is no magic answer. Although they're far from their close family, there are other parts of the family and a community that they've built over the years, and they make the best of it - there's always trade-offs.  Still, he shares he's living in a constant reality of wanting to be with his family more and spend more time with his kids, but having said that, the other side of the coin is that they're being good role model for their kids, teaching them the value of work and the entrepreneurship mentality - “no matter what they'll choose to do when they'll grow up, it teaches them about life.”

Ernest is recognized internationally as a cybersecurity executive. He is a sought-after strategic adviser to the senior leadership of global firms, national government agencies, and corporate and non-profit directors. His main areas of interest and experience include integrating cyber risk as a key component of business risk and opportunity, the effects of cyber risk on critical infrastructure from both operations and national infrastructure governance perspectives, and the threat and promise of Artificial Intelligence as an enabler in the cybersphere. In the 1990s, Ernest served as an Air Force Intelligence officer and an Information Warfare advisor for the US Government. He also has significant experience, directing the development and delivery of cyber security consulting services for large and boutique global consulting firms.  In this episode of the (CS)²AI Podcast, Ernest shares his superhero origin story. He discusses his early interest in the impact of technology on national security, his introduction to information warfare and cybersecurity while in the military, and the skills he needed when he joined the DIA after leaving the Air Force. He also talks about mentorship and offers suggestions for finding the right niche early in your career and developing additional non-technical career skills.  Ernest is proof that you don't have to have a degree in computer science or engineering to do cybersecurity. Tune in today to hear his fascinating story! You won't want to miss this episode if you are entering the market after the military or thinking of transitioning into the cybersecurity space.  Show highlights: As a talkative young lieutenant in the Air Force, Ernest often spoke to his colonel about the book, Third Wave by Alvin Toffler. That resulted in him becoming a liaison to the first Information Warfare Squadron. (2:39) Technology fascinated Ernest, but he focused more on how people use technology and how technology impacts national security. (4:30) You don't need any specific formal education to get into the cybersecurity space. (5:16) Ernest got introduced to cybersecurity after joining the military. (7:27) We have forgotten some of the security problems that Ernest addressed in the late 1990s. They have resurfaced again, however, and caused some concern in the last four or five years. On February 4, 1974, members of the Symbionese Liberation Army kidnapped nineteen-year-old newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst from her Berkeley, California apartment. Desperate to find her, the police called physicist Russell Targ and Pat Price, a psychic retired police commissioner. As Price turned the pages of the police mug book filled with hundreds of photos, suddenly he pointed to one of them and announced, "That's the ringleader." The man was Donald DeFreeze, who was indeed subsequently so identified. Price also described the type and location of the kidnap car, enabling the police to find it within minutes. That remarkable event is one reason Targ believes in ESP. Another occurred when his group made $120,000 by forecasting for nine weeks in a row the changes in the silver-commodity futures market. As a scientist, Targ demands proof. His experience is based on two decades of investigations at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI), which he cofounded with physicist Harold Puthoff in 1972. This twenty-million dollar program launched during the Cold War was supported by the CIA, NASA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and Army and Air Force Intelligence. The experiments they conducted routinely presented results could have happened by chance less than once in a million. give it a'listen Mentioned Links Wanna hear from Russell?
