He shares how he initially attributed his symptoms to stress and aging, but after hearing about TRT on an episode of Horizon Scan (a separate podcast with H-Hour host Hugh Keir and Sin Eaters Guild founder Gaz Walsh), he began to consider hormonal imbalances as a possible cause. Paul explains the process of getting his testosterone levels checked and the challenges he faced in getting a prescription. Paul emphasises the importance of addressing hormonal imbalances and not accepting age-related decline as inevitable. The conversation explores the importance of fitness and strength training for longevity and overall well-being. Paul and Hugh discuss the motivation they find in seeing older individuals who are still active and fit. They also touch on the potential risks of using steroids and the importance of maintaining a balanced approach to training. The conversation highlights the significance of functional fitness and rotational exercises for maintaining stability and preventing injuries. Are you familiar with the term “ 4.0 Leaders”? If you are, then you understand the value of hiring such leaders in whichever niche you serve, especially in this age of the industrial revolution through artificial intelligence.    I am excited to share this episode as we have a returning guest, the Rogue Recruiter, David Perry. We recorded this episode on his birthday. And you know that it will be an episode packed with exceptional expertise and behind-the-scenes stories from 35 years in executive recruitment.   David and I touched upon relevant topics such as building strategic, long-term client relationships and the art of placing the right candidates within a company's culture. We also covered how their project, workinsight.io, can change the current hiring landscape. Lastly, David shared his insight on what recruitment will look like and why hiring 4.0 leaders is a critical role of recruiters.   Episode Outline and Highlights [02:09] Pool Table Analogy - David reveals the strategy in his 35-year career in executive recruitment. [08:02] Pointers on pre-closing deals and establishing long-term client relationships. [19:22] “Executive Recruiting for Dummies” - Why David writes the questions and runs the candidate interview with their clients. [26:06] Educating your clients on the cost of a bad hire while quantifying your added value to their organization. [29:00] Be inspired and don't give up: David shares his story about his early struggles in his recruitment career. [32:24] What is Workinsight.io and how can it be a game changer as a matching platform for candidates and employers? [52:18] Teaser on David's new book - “Revolutions Need Leaders” [1:00:05] David shares why they send a 27-page proposal to their clients. [1:07:00] Book recommendations from David and why he never stops learning from others.   Strategize Your Recruitment Like a Pool Master Before we recorded this episode, he had recently closed around 750K in fees. I wanted to get his insights on how he can consistently deliver in the industry for 35 years.    If you are familiar with the game of pool or billiards, you will relate to David's analogy about his strategies that keep him at the top of his game. He describes his approach, “You play pool, right? Most people and most recruiters are usually good for sinking a shot. Maybe a second one, okay, rarely a third one, yep. Rarely can someone clean the table. So this is how we think about search. We get a lot of inquiries to do work for companies… That's like playing pool. Before we do a deal we want to look down the table and go, okay, what's the next ball, what's the next ball, what's the next ball? And oftentimes we won't take a search because we can't see the next one.“   David elaborated on the following techniques:   Focusing on client relationships, investing time to understand their culture and what fits in their organization. Doing so can make placing three people with one company easier than three people with three different companies. How to pre-close a deal through an intake call with the client via Zoom call that will lead to a face-to-face discussion. Running the interview questions to the candidates, with the clients on the side.   Like me, you will admire David's tenure and expertise and how he delivers his service to his clients.    Democratizing the Job Search Process   David and I discussed their exciting website project: workinsight.io. Work Insight is a recruiting platform designed to be candidate-centric by allowing them to have a level of anonymity. The approach is inspired by dating sites, like Bumble or Tinder. The goal of the platform is to democratize recruitment - “This is designed to help people get the right role. That's why it's free. It's free for recruiters to use and post. It's free for job hunters to come and find jobs and post credentials. So we're trying to democratize the hiring that way. This way, smaller companies who've got a great idea can find people and do it themselves At the same time.”   There are at least two job search frustrations that the platform can solve:   Shortening the job search process: In the US, Davide mentioned that the average job search time is 38 weeks. Workinsight.io can enable a continuous opportunity flow, which will force employers to “be smarter and fairer with the candidates that they have, because now, all of a sudden, the whole market is fluid.”   Solving the “hired for skill, fired for fit” dilemma: As David mentioned, “We've known for four decades hired for skill, fired for fit. If we know this doesn't work and we know that the turnover rate stays at a steady 24%, why don't we fix that?” The platform has an upcoming feature that matches candidates to companies based on cultural fit, aiming to address the high turnover rates caused by mismatches in company culture. This service is available for English-speaking individuals across various roles, industries, and locations.   Having a Glimpse to the Future of Recruiting   I was also fortunate to get a teaser of David's new book “Revolutions Need Leaders”  which addresses these revolutionary changes in recruitment and provides insight into the High Definition of Recruiting (HDR) methodology. David touched upon the impact of leaders like Sam Altman, whose leadership inspired loyalty and action from employees at OpenAI, exemplifying the power of what we term "4.0 leaders." These leaders focus on team success rather than individual achievements and are not easily found through traditional recruitment methods. We discuss strategies for identifying and engaging these elusive candidates, including using LinkedIn effectively for signaling and vetting prospects.   Our Sponsor   This podcast is proudly sponsored by i-intro    i-intro® is an end-to-end retained recruitment platform. Corruption in the police is a sad reality of the job. But for those investigating these coppers, it's especially hard. Often they're mates - but, they're mates who've committed crimes, so there's no holding back.  Chris Coster is Victoria Police's last Chief Inspector. His 45-year career came to an end in 2019, and with it, the rank of Chief Inspector was phased out. During his time at Vic Pol, Chris was the Head of Recruiting - meaning he was the final filter in deciding whether a recruit would be handed a gun and a badge. Then, Chris developed and lead the incredibly successful Neighbourhood Watch Program - and finally, internal investigations; work which saw him investigating his mates, and making some incredibly tough calls. Unpack his career with host Brent Sanders, and understand how Chris overcame immense challenges to be lauded as one of the greats of Victoria Police.  For more episodes, download the LiSTNR app. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Andrew Aspinall, veteran of the Australian Navy speaks with Áine Ní Tighearnaigh and Matt Pepar from Transforming Perceptions about his experience of recovery from PTSD through participation in the Veteran Surf Project on the south coast of NSW. Andrew rides out on a lone bike adventure to raise funds for the Veteran Surf Project on Saturday the 15th July 2023 and will spend 4 months traversing Australia. Andrew joined the Royal Australian Navy as a Commissioned Officer in 1985 and studied Applied Science at the Royal Australian Naval College at HMAS Creswell at Jervis Bay. On graduation he undertook further professional training as an Executive Branch Officer in the surface fleet. He volunteered to train and serve in the Submarine Squadron, for the remainder of his service in the RAN which ended when he resigned in 1994. After leaving the RAN he studied for a Bachelor of Laws and worked within the Defence Industry. Over time he held increasingly senior roles within major multinational defence industry businesses, but knew something was “not quite right” with his mental health and instead of obtaining professional guidance he resorted to alcohol to deal with his mental health issues.  His use of alcohol became a chronic long term addiction. After decades of chronic addiction his brother stepped in and guided him towards some professional help and support. He discovered he was dealing with the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Addiction very commonly flows from PTSD which has a vastly higher rate of occurrence amongst defence veterans and emergency services first responders than it does in the general population. After hospitalisation for PTSD and alcohol addiction he got involved with the Veteran Surf Project (VSP). The VSP began about two years ago. It was the brainchild of Rusty Moran an ex big wave pro-surfer whose father served in the navy during WWII  and suffered from chronic alcoholism and probably PTSD due to that service. Having himself recovered from the effects of trauma through surfing and having seen the impacts of trauma on his father, Rusty established the VSP to determine if surf therapy could assist veterans and first responders (who suffer from PTSD at a rate about 400% higher than the general population. Andrew is undertaking an around the country solo adventure bike ride, raising awareness and more importantly funds for the Veteran Surf Project. This Project has had limited funding support from the Federal Health and require $150,000 to keep it going. The VSP has been incredibly beneficial to Andrew and hundreds of other veterans, serving ADF personnel and emergency service first responders and their families in recovering from PTSD and sometimes the impacts of addiction. Donations for the VSP can be made at GoFundMe “Andys Adventure Around Australia”. Anyone interested in his solo motorcycle journey around the country can follow me on Facebook @Andys Adventure Around Australia.

“What you want in a mentor is someone who truly cares for you and who will look after your interests and not just their own. When you do come across the right person to mentor you, start by showing them that the time they spend with you is worthwhile.” – Vivek Wadhwa It is impossible to overstate the importance of having professional black mentors in the end of life and death care industry. Individuals who selflessly give of themselves, teach, encourage, uplift, and provide opportunity without being competitive all the while allowing apprentices, students, and professionals to stand on their shoulders and to build careers while passing the baton forward. Historically those who've held positions of power and influence have been white male gatekeepers. For young black professionals like myself and those that are constantly emerging, seeking help, guidance, direction, and support from these gatekeepers has been intimidating, disappointing and unfruitful. Luckily this changing. In 2019, I was blessed to meet my mentor Mrs. Anita Grant. Anita Pollard Grant, RN, MS, BSN, AAS, MLD-C is the Founder and CEO of GranEnterprise LLC, the parent copy of the NBE Review Coach. Anita graduated cum laude from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science degree. As an undergraduate, she was a member of Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society for Nursing. After graduation, Anita became a licensed Registered Nurse and a Commissioned Officer in the United States Navy Nurse Corps. During those active-duty years, she gained hands-on experience in Same Day Surgical Care and Behavioral Health Nursing and in supervising staff, facilitating interdisciplinary communication and coordinating patient care. Years later, Anita transitioned to the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps where she served as a Nurse Manager as well as a National Healthcare Recruiter with the Department of Justice/Federal Bureau of Prisons, a Nurse Consultant/Surveyor with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and a Senior Program Manager for the National Institute of Corrections. In May 2021, Anita retired as an O6/Captain from the USPHS after almost thirty (30) years of honorable service. Anita has been an answer to my prayers since the first time we met. Over the years she has poured into me in ways that would take too long to share in this 500-word blog. I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Anita for The Death and Grief Talk Podcast. Though she and I have worked extensively together over the past 3 years developing course, trainings and much more and surprisingly, after all this time and sharing I had no idea what bought her to the death care industry. During our time together, Anita and discuss the foundation of her career in the armed services, her transition into funeral services and her passion for combing her unique life experience, academic and professional skills to help students nationwide achieve licensure in both funeral directing and embalming. Students: This is a hybrid event. You are encouraged to attend in person in STEW 050B (G52)Common IT based Cyber techniques do not apply to many parts of the aviation industry. The aviation industry has to meet a number of Federal Aviation Regulations and using Industry provided standards show compliance to those regulations, perhaps for the life of the airplane after initial certification. Most all updates to airplanes require a certification activity, thus it takes considerable time to make any system changes. This certification process has been time tested and proved to have the right rigor leading to continued improved safety as the number of flights per day worldwide increases each year. Cyber security being an evolving threat must be considered in all system designs. About the speaker: Jim Huffaker is a Senior Manager with Boeing Commercial Airplanes. A 30+ year veteran of Boeing,he leads a team that installs the Onboard Network Server (ONS) and/or Airplane Interface Device (AID) used by flight, maintenance, and cabin crews in all phases of flight. This is Part 3 of a five-part series, Polar Futures, produced by Investable Universe in 2021. When discussing the emerging Arctic economy, the focus is often on extractable natural resources, and how those are protected, exploited, or sustainably harvested. But what might be the ultimate resource—what has elsewhere been called, not without good reason, “the new oil”—is data, the fuel of machine learning and artificial intelligence. Our guest this episode is a pioneering innovator of that powerful resource. Leslie Cannavera is the CEO of PolArctic, which develops artificial intelligence and machine learning models for companies working in the Arctic region. Specifically, the company has developed a customizable neural network algorithm (called Ice Cubed) based on historical data and trends that can forecast up to a year the future ice breakup and ice freeze patterns in the Arctic. Leslie Cannavera is a United States Air Force veteran who served as a Commissioned Officer. PolArctic is a member of the Arctic Economic Council (AEC), and Leslie currently leads the AEC Blue Economy Working Group (BEWG), and serves on the Maritime Working Group and the Infrastructure and Investments working group (IIWG).

Quick links: ABOUT THE BOOK: Amazon | Book Website ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Hi-Res Headshot | Author LinkedIn SOCIAL LINK: Website www.rebeccacontreras.com; Facebook @RebeccaAnnContreras; Instagram @RebeccaAnnContreras Born into poverty to a drug-addicted mother, Rebecca Contreras had been a “lost girl” for almost two decades when, at age 19, she found herself to be a drop out, welfare-dependent teenage mother. As a high school dropout with substance-abuse and emotional trauma tendencies, she was well on her way to perpetuating the generational cycle of destruction and becoming a statistic lost to the system and her upbringing. Her new book, Lost Girl: From the Hood to the White House to Millionaire Entrepreneur (Boss Media, released Oct 2021), recounts this journey from getting off welfare to advising a sitting U.S. president to eventually founding a thriving 100+ person company, her journey demonstrates that harsh beginnings or past mistakes do not need to define us; rather, we each have the power to forge our own pathways, especially when we have self-determination and the ability to recognize and accept helping hands along the way. Rebecca's transformative journey continued with the marriage of her husband, David, who she met while serving in a gang outreach youth community program in Austin. Rebecca and David have been married for 31+ years and live with their family in the Austin area. Together, she and David founded LaunchPad (LP) in 2008, a nonprofit that focused on serving middle school age inner city youth through a comprehensive after school program for nearly a decade in Northeast Austin. Today LaunchPad has shifted to support other philanthropic causes in the State of Texas and globally that are near and dear to the Contreras' heart. To learn more about LP visit www.launchpadthecenter.org. Rebecca started her government service as a single mom in a “welfare-to-work' program under the iconic Texan Ann Richards. After she completed that program and got her GED, she then went on to work in HR for Kay Bailey Hutchison, and worked her way all the way to being a top leader serving 12 years in the George W. Bush legacy, first in Texas as his director of HR, and then in the White House as a Commissioned Officer on Bush's right hand team supporting the presidential transition and leading the process for staffing over 1,200 positions in boards and commissions across the government, President Bush then appointed her to serve on the Board of WestPoint Military Academy.

Retired Navy SEAL Bob Reitz joins the show to share how his deployments have shaped civilian life as well as the coping mechanisms he's developed in conjunction with NuCalm, to manage his PTSD and hypervigilance.   Introduction quote “You may be able to hold your breath for five minutes, but they want to know how you manage and how you act at five minutes and one second. Do you panic? Do you compete? Do you keep your composure? Do you stay underwater and relax even though you're a quiet storm inside? All those things matter.” — Bob Reitz   Guest bio Bob joined the Navy in 1988 and served both as an Enlisted Sailor and a Commissioned Officer over his 22 year career.  The first 8 years in the Navy Bob served as a Machinist Mate where he repaired Submarines in Italy and followed by his time in at the University of Arizona where he received his Bachelor's Degree and Commission; the last 16 years he served as a Commissioned Officer in the US Navy SEAL Teams. Bob was assigned to SEAL Team ONE, SEAL Team FIVE, Special Boat Team TWELVE and also the Naval Postgraduate School where he received his Master's Degree.  Over his time in the Navy he deployed 6 times for 6-7 months each deployment and served 4 years abroad when he was stationed in Italy and Guam.   After leaving the Navy Bob worked as a Security Contractor with other SEALS protecting the Middle East Maersk Shipping line from Pirating and Kidnapping operations conducted by local criminal elements;  He later went into the Defense Contracting Industry where he sold Covert Audio and Video equipment to both DOD and Federal Agencies.  It was during this time that he was introduced to NuCalm by way of a Gifted NuCalm System from Dr. David Walters (Bob's personal Doctor) to help him with Sleep and Travel.  Because NuCalm had such a profound effect on Bob, he quit his Defense Contracting career and reached out to NuCalm to join the team!   Key Takeaways [1:00] David welcomes a long-time friend, Navy SEAL, hero, all-around awesome human and asks him to share the story of how he came to serve.   [5:23] The people who make it to SEAL training need to really want to do it — there is a 75% to 85% drop-out rate! Bob shares some of the grueling trials and training required.   [8:31] Bob shares some of his deployments, what they have meant, and the fundamental mission difference between pre- and post-9/11.   [13:56] Six to seven months of constant sympathetic drive is not something your body or mind is used to recuperating from, but it's part of the job. Bob shares the hurdles of hypervigilance experience as well as the hardships of managing the need for control post-deployment.   [20:13] Bob shares a personal example of how hypervigilance can show up inappropriately — even backyard camping — in a personal and family relationship setting.   [22:11] Growing with a tightly knit unit of brothers at arms and developing this uniquely unshakable bond teaches you that life is really about community. Retirement from this context can lead to a profound feeling of loss and Bob shares how some people find relief from this feeling of emptiness.   [30:12] PTSD is ugly. And easy to deny. Bob opens up about his Veteran grandfather.   [35:55] To put things into perspective, Bob shares what a day in his life is on deployment 24/7 for seven months at a time — from Djibouti to Afghanistan.   [40:32] What does Veteran's day mean to Bob? He also shares advice on how to come back to civilian life.   [48:12] From dying on the vine to Bob figuring out the best coping mechanisms for managing his PTSD — including NuCalm.   [52:33] Audience questions start with “How do you share this PTSD experience with others?”   [58:05] “Have you customized NuCalm for your own optimal experience?”   [1:01:52] “TBI and TMJ are causing grinding. Will NuCalm help with this?”   [1:07:04] “Bob's recommendations for getting — and staying — in the zone.”   [1:16:30] David thanks Bob for his service, his experience, and for sharing so much of himself.   Continue on your journey and until next time, breathe deep, relax, and keep looking forward.   Mentioned in this episode NuCalm   More about your host Connect with David Poole — Chief Business Officer at NuCalm on LinkedIn   More about NuCalm and the podcast This is NuCalm, the show for those looking to improve sleep quality, manage stress, and boost recovery. Chad and I welcome Will Fediw back to the Beyond Small Talk podcast and ask Will to help make the distinction between mentorship and sponsorship. Mentorship tends to be a passive role; a mentor is a source of guidance and advice. Whereas sponsorship is a more active process; it requires the sponsor to spend human capital for the benefit of another. We dig a little bit deeper into the benefits of sponsorship and also share some of our favorite stories about sponsorship opportunities. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Will Fediw is the Vice President of Industry & Government Affairs at Virginia Maritime Association (VMA). As Vice President of Industry & Government Affairs, Will Fediw plays a leading role in creating and implementing business development and legislative strategies to improve the economic and political climates for VMA member companies and Virginia's port. Furthermore, he keeps VMA's membership and leadership advised of industry, regulatory, and legislative developments within Virginia's maritime supply chain sector, ensuring open and timely communication and representation. For over a decade, Will has been involved in maritime operations, marine terminal development, external affairs, and stakeholder advocacy. While working closely with federal, state, and local governments in several ports around the country, he led marine infrastructure permitting for deepwater terminals, maritime transportation initiatives & legislation, and maritime economic development solutions. Growing up in Hampton Roads, Will graduated from Old Dominion University in 2008 with a degree in Maritime Supply Chain Management, during which he was an intern at Norfolk International Terminals. Following graduation, he served as a Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Coast Guard specializing in maritime safety & security regulatory compliance. Additionally, he managed the regulatory oversight and maritime risk analysis for $47B of regional energy projects under development. Afterwards, he worked as the Director for Marine Development and Regulatory Compliance for Venture Global LNG, a private natural gas firm currently developing marine export terminals in the Gulf Coast. During that period, he also served as the Vice-Chair of the Louisiana Energy Export Association, a regional advocacy coalition of energy exporters. Additionally, Will holds a Master of Business Administration through the University of North Carolina's Kenan-Flagler Business School. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To read the Harvard Business Review article we referenced today, "Want More Diverse Senior Leadership? Rear Admiral (RADM) Pamela Schweitzer - retired Chief Professional Officer of Pharmacy for the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) - talks to us about the roles and responsibilities of pharmacists during a public health crisis.  Dr. Schweitzer was responsible for providing leadership and coordination of USPHS pharmacy programs for the Office of the Surgeon General and the Department of Health & Human Services from 2014-2018. Key Lessons: Pharmacists play a critical role in the USPHS because they have a unique skill set. A pandemic, like COVID-19, requires a coordinated effort between the public and private sectors to address mass vaccination efforts as well as shortages of medications, testing, and personal protective equipment. Behind the scenes, USPHS pharmacists are deeply involved in policy development.  Recent policy changes have empowered pharmacists to vaccinate children to meet an unmet public health need. Pharmacists in the USPHS must wear many hats. While formal training is helpful, getting a wide breadth of on-the-job experiences is critical. Be curious. Learn new skills in every position/job. Be flexible and positive. Be comfortable with shifting conditions. Step up, speak up, and volunteer.  Act when you can.  Be a role model. If you'd like to get more involved, consider volunteering with your local Medical Reserve Corps or becoming a Commissioned Officer in the USPHS.

There is a land grab going on right now, the likes of which the health care industry hasn’t seen before—at least in our generation. Spoiler alert: There’s a whole episode of Relentless Health Value coming up on the impact of the Teladoc-Livongo hookup. And that is totally relevant to the point I’m about to make. But let me just start with a little bit of background: American patients—let’s get real here—have no more money to spend on health care every year. Really. I mean, you look to employers. The government? Who knows? But let’s just say for the purposes of this discussion that what’s going on right now is a zero-sum game—that the dollars in the system every year are the dollars in the system, and if you want to increase your revenue as any given health care stakeholder, you’ve got to take those dollars from somebody else. Alright … now consider this: Previously, if a health system, say, were going to make a list of their competitors, they’d probably list the health system down the street, maybe the one in the next town over if there seems to be a lot of commuting. Oh, my, how we no longer live in that simple world! Enter the pandemic and patients not only accepting but kind of digging virtual care and its convenience and its accessibility. Now consider what happened to brick-and-mortar stores who didn’t add online retailers to their list of competitive threats. Virtual entities doing chronic care management, diabetes, musculoskeletal, other population health endeavors … these are now or will soon enough be head-to-head competitors to in-person care settings. My local health system, they may also decide to stand up to telehealth—and many of them did. But if the playing field is now in the Cloud, how’s the patient experience on their systems? Everybody accepted that, in the beginning, they were kind of buggy and calls dropped and all you could see was the doctor’s ear in a weirdly dark room or something. But six months later or a year later? Not exactly sure when patients’ patience will run out, especially when there are companies out there who built amazing virtual experiences from the ground up and who, by the way, are often hired by health plans, who, by the way, make it financially, let’s just say, attractive for patients to use those services that the plan is providing instead of the big expensive consolidated health plan that raised their rates 30-fold over the past couple of years like one of them anecdotally did. So, you start to see why, if I were a health system or a provider executive, I’d kind of shuffle the patient centricity, design thinking, patient experience—that whole bunch—to the first tab of my spreadsheet. Patients have, at this moment, unprecedented choice; and so do their employers, nothing for nothing. As Dr. Matt Anderson told me the other day, if a health system thinks that it’s going to make the difference by doing more specialty services and expensive procedures, that might be a risky bet. Other battlegrounds in the land grab include home health or hospital at home. Humana, for one, is trying to dominate the whole home health space. Again, it’s a turf war, because these patients are now not going to the local hospital—you know, not paying the local hospital, which might be the more operative statement. So, anyway, I thought it might be a good idea to replay my conversation with Dr. Joe Selby from early last year. Dr. Selby is the [now-retired] executive director of PCORI, otherwise known as the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute. PCORI is an independent nonprofit organization in Washington, DC. Since December 2012, PCORI has funded hundreds of studies that compare health care options to learn which work best given patient circumstances and preference. So, it’s definitely good background information. Anyone driving for the best patient experience might want to have it at their fingertips. If you want even more advice about what to contemplate when contemplating patient experience, I’d refer you to episode 236, which is my conversation with Liliana Petrova, the CEO and founder over at The Petrova Experience. In that episode, Liliana translates her experience as director of customer experience at JetBlue to the health care industry. You could also check out episode 228, “How to Figure Out What Patients Really Want,” when I spoke with Julie Rish, PhD, from the Cleveland Clinic. And I’d round out the mix with episode 252, “The Not-So-Obvious Thing That Musculoskeletal Care and a 4-Minute Mile Have in Common”; and that’s when I talked to Chad Gray, CEO over at Integrated Musculoskeletal Care. I mention this last one because Chad’s company is pretty much a direct competitor to local orthopedic practices across the nation that his group is not aligned with. When you listen to the show, you can start to get a bead on how high the bar is starting to raise.  You can learn more at PCORI.org.  Joe V. Selby, MD, MPH, retired as the executive director of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) in December 2019. Relentless Health Value
EP225: Can We Afford to Make Health Care Patient-centric?, With Joe Selby, MD, MPH, Executive Director of PCORI

It turns out, patient-centric care that produces outcomes patients care about is usually less expensive than care that is not. The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), an independent nonprofit, nongovernmental organization in Washington, DC, was authorized by Congress in 2010. PCORI was established to fund research that can help patients make better-informed decisions, guided by clinicians, payers, and others. In other words, help nudge health care into a patient-centric place, for the good of everyone involved in a quadruple aim sort of way. Since December 2012, PCORI has funded hundreds of studies that compare health care options to learn which work best, given patients’ circumstances and preferences. Today I speak with Dr. Joe Selby, executive director of PCORI. You can learn more at PCORI.org.   Joe V. Selling in a Skirt with Judy Hoberman Radio with her guest Dr. Donna Thomas Rodgers & Julie Anne Eason: Dr. Donna Thomas Rodgers has over 20 years of leadership experience. Dr. Donna has served as a Private-First-Class to a Commissioned Officer in the military. After performing her military duties Dr. Donna worked her way up the ranks to C-level suites. Those experiences have allowed her to strategically solve problems at all levels in an organization. As a Commissioned Military Police Officer she managed millions of dollars of assets and equipment and led over 2,500 soldiers without any casualties. After transitioning to a management role at Frito-Lay Dr. Donna continued to perform at a high level. She personally supervised over 500 employees, managed 20 million dollars in company assets, and trained corporate team members at the national level in safety, continuous improvement and performance-based training. Julie Anne Eason has been a professional writer for over 20 years. After figuring out that fiction writing wasn't for her, she turned to freelance journalism and copywriting for a living. As technology advanced, she witnessed the balance of power in the publishing industry shift. Once the big New York publishers held all the cards. Writers were “lucky” if they could land an agent or a book contract. But now individuals are taking the initiative and writing, publishing, and marketing their own books without the need for an agent or publisher to give them a chance — which means that finally businesses, non-profits, and entrepreneurs can take advantage of the amazing power of books. Today she ghostwrites full-length books for entrepreneurs, speakers, coaches, CEOs, and other business people who want to expand their reach and build their brands.
