What makes torpedoes move faster? This Gun in My Hand!Show Notes:1. This episode was inspired by “Journey Into Fear,” an episode of The US Steel Hour of Mystery starring Lawrence Olivier and broadcast on June 9, 1946, which was adapted from the 1940 novel by Eric Ambler.https://www.oldtimeradiodownloads.com/thriller/the-hour-of-mystery/journey-into-fear-1946-06-092. No, it's not my impression of a Greek accent. The lines from Mithrodopolis in this episode are my impression of the guy from that 1946 broadcast of Journey Into Fear, doing an unidentifiable accent that's all over the place. I actually tried to sound like David Lander's character from On the Air, a 1992 David Lynch tv comedy that only aired 3 episodes in the US.3. “Mon petit chou” was an expression I heard not in high school French class, but from my mother. She had learned it from her father who landed at Normandy three to six days after D-Day. He drove a refrigerated supply truck. I wonder in what context he learned “mon petit chou” from the locals?Credits:The opening and middle transitional music clips were from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950), and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), both films in the public domain. Below is the description from this episode. To learn more about the show, head to the Pigskin Dispatch website.Pro football just after World War I was an interesting period in gridiron history indeed. As what would become the NFL was just starting up there were other, and I say this loosely, "leagues" where paid football players took the field. One of those was a short-lived group of teams in the Coal Region of Eastern Pennsylvania fondly called the Anthracite League. Historian Joe Zagorski visits to talk about this and more.PRO FOOTBALL IN THE 1970S BACKGROUNDReliving Gridiron Glory: Pro Football in the 1970s with Joe ZagorskiProfessional football is one of the most exciting spectator sports in America. The decade of the 1970s saw the sport grow by leaps and bounds, thanks mostly to exciting players who quickly became icons. NFL players such as Joe Namath, Roger Staubach, O.J.Simpson, Terry Bradshaw, “Mean” Joe Greene and Fran Tarkenton are still considered household names today.During the 1970s, the growing millions of pro football fans also witnessed numerous exciting games and plays, many of which are still remembered and discussed today. Plays like Franco Harris' Immaculate Reception in 1972, or the original Hail Mary Pass in 1975, or the Sea of Hands game in 1974, or the Ghost to the Post game in 1977…so many memories, and all during one of the greatest decades in NFL history.Joe Zagorski's Pro Football in the 1970s podcast explores all the great memories that occurred in the NFL during that memorable decade. Each segment will tackle a specific event or player in the NFL during the 1970s. Each episode will also include a trivia question from some aspect of that particular episode's theme or topic. Joe Zagorski's Pro Football in the 1970s podcast takes listeners back to a time of old school pro football, where the game might have been simpler in the form of strategy, but it was also more pure and more robust than it had ever been before. ...

The failed anthracite coal mine workers strike of 1887-88 in eastern Pennsylvania illustrates some of the fault lines and contradictions within capitalism and highlight some of the ways our 21st century economy is devolving back toward older patterns. America at the dawn of the twentieth century ran on anthracite coal. Burning the hard, lustrous fossil fuel heated millions of homes and powered locomotives, steamships, foundries, and factories. Nearly all of this coal came out of the hills of eastern Pennsylvania, mined by an army of workers who labored in the most dangerous industry in American for the lowest wages in the country. At about $1/day, anthracite coal miners in 1900 earned the same wage as ad their forebears eighty years previously. Hardship led some miners to organize for the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) union, but divisions along ethnic and class lines among miners limited their effectiveness. That is, until 1902. As shown in the research of Daniel Correia, professor of American Studies at the University of New Mexico, the alignment of the interests of the Eastern European immigrant mine “laborers” with those of the native and systemically favored mine “contractors” under the umbrella of the UMWA in 1902 created a uniquely advantageous moment for the labor organizers, and a uniquely perilous moment for the mine operators. The effects of this moment were long lasting. In its contours can be seen the early formation of patterns of labor relations, industrial organization, and policing prevalent today. In support of his work, Professor Correia received funding from the Center for the History of Business Technology, & Society at the Hagley Museum & Library. The first book to tell the story of Pennsylvania's anthracite coal industry in the post-industrial age comes to us through the work of Dr. Philip Mosley. This examination of regional history takes a post-historic view, and explores how its representation and remembrance. The broader themes of environmental and socioeconomic change are taken up; recollections of the Knox Mine Disaster in Luzerne County in 1959 and the start of the infamous Centralia mine fire which began in 1962 and still burns to this day. Dr. Mosley is a native of England who came to the US in 1988; he is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of English and Comparative Literature at Penn State University. His works include books on literature and cinema, including "Anthracite!" (2006) and the 2019 release "Resuming Maurice." Dr. Mosley is also a translator of works by Belgian francophone authors and received the Prix de la Traduction in 2008.

The prospects for anthracite are looking very good, especially in terms of market value and having demand coming from different parts of the world, says Menar MD Vuslat Bayoglu, who was speaking to Mining Weekly in a Zoom interview. (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.) Bayoglu reports that many European countries are seeking alternatives to anthracite from Russia, a major anthracite producer, and opportunities are opening up for non-Russian anthracite producers to establish long-term relationships with new markets. South Africa, which produces about three-million tons of anthracite a year, is one of the countries benefiting from access to new lucrative markets. Sixty per cent of South African anthracite is exported from Richards Bay and Durban and 40% is used domestically for sintering, ferroalloys, and electrode paste. Menar, which bought Zululand Anthracite Colliery (ZAC) from mining major Rio Tinto in 2016, is now investing in the development of ZAC's new Mngeni shaft. ZAC operates an underground narrow-seam operation located in Emakhalathini, about 100 km from Richards Bay in Northern KwaZulu-Natal. ZAC has continued to supply anthracite to Rio Tinto's Richards Bay Minerals. “For us it's a good operation, it makes money and we have a very good relationship with the community in the area, so we are very happy to have invested in Zululand Anthracite,” says Bayoglu. ZAC is currently mining from three shafts in five different sections. “The main challenge with ZAC is that the geology is very difficult, it might be the most difficult underground coal mine in South Africa. We have several issues, be it gas or dykes, so production has got lots of challenges. “Hence, we have find ways of increasing production. We decided to put in a new shaft. We called it Mngeni and after a long timeline we got all the approvals. We've started clearing the site and we're hoping to get the first coal out of Mngeni in March/April next year,” says Bayoglu, who adds the company is continuing to explore the area. This will aid in extending the life-of-mine of ZAC still further and, with that, the extension of jobs and social labour plan benefits in an otherwise poor region of the country, where a large community is dependent on ZAC for water. Water from underground is purified and supplied to about 80 000 people. Mining Weekly: What's your assessment of the global anthracite market? Bayoglu: I think four inter-connected factors will drive the market in the foreseeable future. The first is the race for post-Covid global economic recovery. Major economies – for example, Europe, Asia, China and the United States – are trying hard to avoid a slump and to put their economies at levels better than the pandemic phase. The second is the ongoing Russian war in Ukraine which has triggered Western sanctions against Russia. European anthracite importers that have previously depended on Russia have searched and discovered replacements elsewhere including in South Africa. The third factor is the intrinsic value of anthracite. As a high-premium coal with high carbon content, anthracite is suitable for a variety of industrial applications – from steel to electrode paste manufacturing. According to the World Steel Association, about 89% of a blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace's energy input comes from anthracite, 7% from electricity, 3% from natural gas, and 1% from other gases and sources. In the case of the electric arc furnace route, the energy input from anthracite accounts for 11%, from electricity 50%, from natural gas 38%, and 1% from other sources. The fourth is possible shortage of coking coal. According to a recently released report by market research company Fortune Business Insights entitled ‘Anthracite Coal Mining Market, 2022-2029', the global anthracite coal mining market size is set to expand significantly in part due to expectation of global coke shortage. In addition, Macquarie researchers recently projected a deficit for metallurgical coal ...

The mining of Anthracite coal in Northeastern Pennsylvania over the past century (particularly that done before the establishment of the Clean Water Act and EPA) has left a difficult environmental legacy. Most importantly, abandoned mine drainage continues to adversely effect the water quality of rivers , streams and the Chesapeake Bay downstream. Pro football just after World War I was an interesting period in gridiron history indeed. As what would become the NFL was just starting up there were other, and I say this loosely, "leagues" where paid football players took the field. One of those was a short-lived group of teams in the Coal Region of Eastern Pennsylvania fondly called the Anthracite League. To begin, We Drive Solar has equipped 25 Hyundai IONIQ 5 BEVs with vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology to send power back to homes and businesses in the region during peak energy hours. - By implementing a holistic system of solar panels, charging stations, and shared vehicles with V2G capabilities like the modified IONIQ 5s, the companies seek to power 2,530 homes in Utrecht to create the “world's first bi-directional city.” - When vehicles do need to be used, residents of Utrecht will be able to drive a shared car through We Drive Solar, offering EVs like the IONIQ 5s equipped with V2G tech. The initial rollout is 25 BEVs, but Hyundai has already shared intentions to implement 150 over the course of 2022. - In the Utrecht region, renewables like solar and wind power are the main sources of energy. That energy can then be stored in the battery packs of the IONIQ 5s to drive around as shared vehicles, but also use V2G capabilities to send that stored energy back to the city during peak hours. In the beginning Tesla mainly displayed road markers and a few vehicles, and over time started to gradually add more types of vehicles, pedestrians, and traffic cones, speed bumps, even dogs. - The 3D model Tesla uses to represent our vehicle on the display is much more detailed than other vehicle models. Tesla can make other vehicle models just as detailed, however they're purposely vague to represent any vehicle. Its a question as old as the 1989: Who started the fire? I think Billy Joel was pretty clear it wasn't him. After all, JFK was blown away so what more is there to say? At least its all a metaphorical fire though, imagine how terrible it would be if there really was a fire that's been burning for several decades. On that note I have some troubling news... In last week’s post, I shared a simple method for working with your crystals to uncover the deeper energies and meanings of the 22 Major Arcana cards in the Tarot. This week, we’ll be diving into the remaining 56 cards in the Tarot deck, known as the Minor Arcana. These Minor cards add perspective to what is happening in your everyday life. The cards in the Minor Arcana are divided into four suits. Each suit represents a different aspect of your life and corresponds to one of the four elements: Water Element: Cups (also known as Chalices) Fire Element: Wands (also known as Rods, Staffs, or Staves) Air Element: Swords (also known as Daggers) Earth Element: Pentacles (also known as Coins or Discs) Each suit is then made up of numbered cards (Ace through Ten) and Court cards (Page, Knight, Queen, and King). Each number has its own meaning within the suits, giving you a deeper understanding of what the cards are telling you. In general, the Even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10) reveal that there is balance and harmony in your life whereas odd numbers (1/Ace, 3, 5, 7, and 9) represent obstacles or challenges you may face (think of these as opportunities for growth). To dive deep into the Tarot Minor Arcana, you can work with your crystals to help you uncover even more about the meaning of each card. To do this, you’ll need a deck of tarot cards and a crystal to represent each element (that’s four crystals in total). I’ve listed some of my favorite elemental crystals here below. Earth: Petrified Wood, Anthracite, Malachite, Carnelian, Red Jasper, Emerald, Rainforest Jasper, Chrysocolla, Serpentine, Agate (all types), and Peridot Air: Celestite, Pumice, Azurite, Blue Apatite, Lepidolite, Turquoise, Blue Kyanite, Blue Sapphire, Angelite, and Mica Fire: Amber, Rhodochrosite, Ruby, Lava Rock, Fire Agate, Red Spinel, Citrine, Diamond, Heliodor, Obsidian, and Clear Quartz Water: Amethyst, Boulder Opal, Larimar, White Calcite, Pearl, Blue Lace Agate, Amazonite, Aquamarine, Moonstone, Selenite, and Blue Tourmaline To begin this process, separate out the Major Arcana (0-21) cards from your Tarot deck and set them aside, leaving only the 56 Minor Arcana Cards. Choose just one of these Minor Arcana cards that you’d like to explore in-depth. Place it in front of you (on your altar, or on the floor or a table in your sacred space). Reach for your corresponding elemental crystal. For example, Aquamarine for Cups and the Water element or Malachite for Pentacles and the Earth element. You might also like to have other representations of these elements on your altar or in your sacred space for this process. Bringing the Elements Into Your Sacred Space: Earth: fresh flowers, a dish of sand or soil, crystals or fossils, wood carvings, fruit, seeds, an image or statue of a land animal. Air: feathers, incense, lace, athame (or small dagger), windchimes, bell, a hand fan, a flute, an image or statue of a bird. Fire: candles, a lantern, a cauldron, an image or statue of a dragon, salamander, or phoenix Water: a small dish of water, a fountain, seashells (especially an Abalone shell), a chalice or goblet, a mirror, an image or statue of a mermaid or dolphin. Hold the stone in cupped hands above the Tarot card. Ask that the stone help provide you with more clarity about the meaning of this card. Close your eyes and breathe deeply while holding the stone in your hands. To truly embody the vibration of the card, take the number of breaths equal to the number of your card. For example, three deep breaths for the 3 of Wands, or six deep breaths for the 6 of Swords. Breathe in the elemental energy of the crystal in your hands as you do this. If you chose to work with a Court card, use your intuition to guide you on the correct number of breaths. After your final exhalation, open your eyes and immediately look at the card. Do this while still holding your stone.

On September 10, 1897, a group of 400 striking coal miners--workers of Polish, Slovak, and Lithuanian descent or origin--marched on Lattimer, Pennsylvania. There, law enforcement officers fired without warning into the protesters, killing nineteen miners and wounding thirty-eight others. The bloody day quickly faded into history. Paul Shackel confronts the legacies and lessons of the Lattimer event. Beginning with a dramatic retelling of the incident, Shackel traces how the violence, and the acquittal of the deputies who perpetrated it, spurred membership in the United Mine Workers. By blending archival and archaeological research with interviews, he weighs how the people living in the region remember--and forget--what happened. Paul Shackel is a professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Maryland-College Park. Description courtesy of University of Illinois Press.

How do you smuggle wagon loads of coal into the EU? In this episode of Energy and Innovation you'll learn how Anthracite, a form of hard coal, is funding the conflict in Eastern Ukraine. Reporters, Karolina Baca-Pogorzelska and Michał Potocki explain how anthracite is transported out of the occupied regions of Ukraine and into the EU. In 2014, Russian backed separatists invaded the Eastern part of Ukraine and established the territories called the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republic. In these territories are the anthracite mines, that the separatists took control of, and are now selling and shipping the coal through Russia to European and other international markets. Anthracite is a form of hard coal, often used in metallurgy, like steel making and in other chemical processes. In this episode you'll understand how the label 'conflict minerals', does not ONLY apply to diamonds or minerals we find in batteries. But also how conflict resources fund and fuel the Russian separatist in Eastern Ukraine. Despite sanctions on Russia and separatists, the trade in Ukrainian Anthracite still exists in a gray area which does not prohibit the buying of it in the EU. For more information, check out the show notes, where you'll find links to Michal and Karolina's work on this topic in English. And a final note in this introduction. My apologies for the quality of the interview audio. We recorded the interview in a café in Warsaw after I met Michal and Carolina while I was doing my own research on the Polish energy sector. As you may know these early episodes of my podcast are a process of learning. And there's a lot of technical issues for me to learn about - that's an understatement. Regardless of some audio issues - mainly my with my own voice, I think you'll find the conversation fascinating to understand how you can even begin to smuggle wagon loads of coal out of a country and into the EU to make money out of it.Anthracite FAQ. What’s the Deal with the Donbas Coal? autor: Michał Potocki, Karolina Baca-Pogorzelska

Can tightly regulated coal mining help undo decades worth of environmental damage caused by the coal industry? A Pennsylvania DEP official, and a mining executive, discuss efforts to remediate water and land in the state’s Anthracite coal region. -- Pennsylvania’s economy has long been tied to its coal industry. In the 19th century the state’s pioneering coal companies fueled America’s industrial revolution, and thousands of mining sites opened over the decades that followed. Yet, over a century later, many of Pennsylvania’s coal mines have closed as the resource’s primacy has waned. John Stefanko, Deputy Secretary for the Office of Active and Abandoned Mine Operations at Pennsylvania’s DEP, and Greg Driscoll, Chief Executive of Blaschak Coal Company, look at the environmental damage that remains after mines have been abandoned, and on cooperation between today’s coal industry, and regulators, to clean up some of that damage. The focus is on the Anthracite coal industry of Northeastern Pennsylvania, where the remains of a once large coal industry attempts to find profits, while bearing costs for cleaning up the damage of past decades. John Stefanko is Deputy Secretary for the Office of Active and Abandoned Mine Operations at Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection. Ron Kramer's Lemko Ukrainian-American family has deep roots in the Primrose/Minersville, Pa., area. His grandfather Wasyl Kramar arrived in the Anthracite region of eastern Pennsylvania coming from the Lemko region of Austria-Hungary, now southeast Poland, in 1897. Ron talks about his family roots, the local Lemko Ukrainian-American community and Ukrainian Seminary Day. Ukrainian Day is an annual event that began in the Anthracite coal region in 1933 and is now a fund-raiser for the South Anthracite Deanery of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Archeparchy of Philadelphia. It is a major homecoming for Ukrainians with family from the area. It will take place this year on Sunday, July 30th, in Primrose, Pa. Although hard coal’s labor history has received greater consideration in recent years, many untold stories remain. “Anthracite Labor Wars” tells the story of a thirty year labor war (from approximately 1905-1935) and its long-term consequences (up to 1960) for the workers and the industry. It was an evolving conflict not only between labor and management, but also between labor and labor, and labor and organized crime. Much of the fighting occurred between and among employees of the Pennsylvania Coal Company and the Hillside Coal & Iron Company- both owned by the Erie Railroad and, therefore, called the Erie Coal Companies- in the northern anthracite field around Wilkes-Barre and Scranton. The book details the determined efforts by workers to organize against various workplace grievances, especially two forms of tenancy- the subcontracting system and the leasing system- initiated by management to achieve greater workplace control, productivity, and ultimately profits.

This week's show will be hosted by Nick Ozorak, creator of the Virtual Railroading series "At The Railyard". Nick will be joined by other members of the Virtual Railroading community to talk about the benefits of modeling in V-Scale (Virtual Scale) on your very own computer. There will also be route developers calling in (including Michael DiMaio of the PRR Eastern Region project and Nate Haydt of the Anthracite project) talking about what it’s like to build a layout on a computer. The call-in number is 646.716.7106.
"Telling of the Anthracite" explores the various ways in which anthracite history has been represented and remembered since 1960, the chosen date for the start of the "posthistorical" era coinciding approximately with the Knox mine disaster (1959) and the beginning of the Centralia mine fire (1962-), two cataclysmic and fateful events that symbolize the beginning of the end for wide scale deep anthracite mining in northeastern Pennsylvania. pcntv.com/donate pcntv.com/membership-signup pcntv.com
