Sean Penn is a powerhouse film performer capable of intensely moving work, who has gone from strength to strength during a colorful film career, and who has drawn much media attention for his stormy private life and political viewpoints. Sean Justin Penn was born in Los Angeles, California, the second son of actress Eileen Ryan (née Annucci) and director, actor, and writer Leo Penn. His brother was actor Chris Penn. His father was from a Lithuanian Jewish/Russian Jewish family, and his mother is of half-Italian and half Irish descent. Penn first appeared in roles as strong-headed or unruly youths such as the military cadet defending his academy against closure in Taps (1981), then as fast-talking surfer stoner Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982). Fans and critics were enthused about his obvious talent and he next contributed a stellar performance alongside Timothy Hutton in the Cold War spy thriller The Falcon and the Snowman (1985), followed by a teaming with icy Christopher Walken in the chilling At Close Range (1986). The youthful Sean then paired up with his then wife, pop diva Madonna in the woeful, and painful, Shanghai Surprise (1986), which was savaged by the critics, but Sean bounced back with a great job as a hot-headed young cop in Colors (1988), gave another searing performance as a US soldier in Vietnam committing atrocities in Casualties of War (1989) and appeared alongside Robert De Niro in the uneven comedy We're No Angels (1989). However, the 1990s was the decade in which Sean really got noticed by critics as a mature, versatile and accomplished actor, with a string of dynamic performances in first-class films. Almost unrecognisable with frizzy hair and thin rimmed glasses, Penn was simply brilliant as corrupt lawyer David Kleinfeld in the Brian De Palma gangster movie Carlito's Way (1993) and he was still in trouble with authority as a Death Row inmate pleading with a caring nun to save his life in Dead Man Walking (1995), for which he received his first Oscar nomination. Sean then played the brother of wealthy Michael Douglas, involving him in a mind-snapping scheme in The Game (1997) and also landed the lead role of Sgt. Eddie Walsh in the star-studded anti-war film The Thin Red Line (1998), before finishing the 1990s playing an offbeat jazz musician (and scoring another Oscar nomination) in Sweet and Lowdown (1999). The gifted and versatile Sean had also moved into directing, with the quirky but interesting The Indian Runner (1991), about two brothers with vastly opposing views on life, and in 1995 he directed Jack Nicholson in The Crossing Guard (1995). Both films received overall positive reviews from critics. Moving into the new century, Sean remained busy in front of the cameras with even more outstanding work: a mentally disabled father fighting for custody of his seven-year-old daughter (and receiving a third Oscar nomination) for I Am Sam (2001); an anguished father seeking revenge for his daughter's murder in the gut-wrenching Clint Eastwood-directed Mystic River (2003) (for which he won the Oscar as Best Actor); a mortally ill college professor in 21 Grams (2003) and a possessed businessman in The Assassination of Richard Nixon (2004). Sometimes Hollywood “royalty” aren't enough for a film to stand out and become a blockbuster. When you have director Gregory Hoblit, behind such genre films as PRIMAL FEAR (1996) and FREQUENCY (2000), screenwriter Nicholas Kazan behind AT CLOSE RANGE (1986) and REVERSAL OF FORTUNE (1990), and Denzel Washington starring, you'd think the film FALLEN (1998) would be a blockbuster. But it wasn't. Why?Synopsis: Detective John Hobbes (Denzel Washington) successfully captures serial killer Edgar Reese (Elias Koteas). On the day of his execution, Reese seems to have made peace with Hobbes, shaking hands. But while dying, he appears unrepentant. Days later, copy cat murders begin and drag Hobbes back into a crime wave that may be more than just done by a man.Besides Denzel Washington, the film's cast includes John Goodman, Donald Sutherland, James Gandolfini, and Elias Koteas. The movie was released during a wave of supernatural religious thrillers in the 1990's that were either hit or miss. FALLEN received mixed reviews and left the box office with little success. A Patreon pick from one of our listeners, the podcast crew take a look at the movie and give their thoughts.

This week we begin our two part coverage on the King of the Character Actors: Christopher Walken. Known for his eccentric characters, out there line deliveries and the ease with which he switches from calm to chilling, Walken is one of the greatest living actors right now. Beginning with his Oscar-win for Best Supporting actor in the Vietnam war epic The Deer Hunter, we track his career through the ‘80s and into the early ‘90s. We look at the Stephen King adaptation The Dead Zone, the musical Pennies from Heaven and the crime thrillers At Close Range and King of New York. Today, we travel back to a time of perms and material girls with James Foley's 1986 At Close Range. This flick features Sean Penn as a troubled young guy who wants to connect with his deadbeat dad and do some crime, but when the nice crime turns to bad crime, things get dangerous. Anywho, this flick lost money but has a ton of star power and most importantly, was a fan request so we did it because we're nice fucking guys (and you can always blame Mike). So, does it hold up? Listen in as Jon, Colin, and Brent question who keeps giving Crispin Glover work and whether they are the same one who told Walken his stache was cool as we try to see if this flick can miss the target at close range.
The events that took place in Chester County, Pennsylvania in August 1978 were unthinkable. Family killing family. A father calling for the murder of his own son. For years The Johnston Gang got away with everything—theft, burglary, violence—until the brazen attacks of August 1978 crossed a line, and the family crime empire began to crumble. Host and writer Amanda Lamb shares her own memories of the murders and the trials that followed. Her father was the lead prosecutor who helped bring the killers to justice. A fictional account of The Johnston Gang’s downfall was portrayed in the 1986 movie “At Close Range,” but this is the real story of a violent family crime operation and the long task of bringing its leaders to justice. Returning to the podcast today, we have a fan favorite in the form of Mr. Jordan Harper. One of my dearest friends, this podcast's very first guest, and my Pandemic Movie Club, and Game Night crew buddy, Jordan is the Edgar award-winning author of She Rides Shotgun, Love & Other Wounds, The Last King of California - releasing in September in the UK - and Everybody Knows, which will be available everywhere in 2023.Additionally, a screenwriter and producer of such shows as The Mentalist, Gotham, and Hightown, Jordan crafted one of the most beautiful pilots for L.A. Confidential, which CBS stupidly did not pick up, but was so acclaimed he screened and did a virtual panel on the show at the ATX TV Festival. A Missouri native - and yes, that will come up in today's conversation, Jordan currently lives in L.A. along with his talented screenwriter girlfriend Megan Mostyn-Brown, and adorable dog Ellroy.Welcoming Jordan back to celebrate the release of The Last King of California next week in the UK, in this rich, thoughtful, fresh conversation, we explore a trio of films that center on criminal families (of the blood variety), including James Foley's At Close Range, David Michôd's Animal Kingdom, and Debra Granik's Winter's Bone.Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music ArchiveLogo: KateGabrielle.comOriginally Posted on Patreon (9/14/22) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/71974209

He's My Father: James Foley's At Close Range On this week's episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos, Mr. Chavez & I sit down to discuss a 1980s cable mainstay, James Foley's At Close Range. One of the earliest films to showcase Sean Penn as a lead, Foley's film is a harrowing look at father-son/criminal relationships in rural Pennsylvania. Penn made a name for himself with this film after exceptional turns in Bad Boys (1983) and Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) and showed a hint of the work that would come to be expected from him over the next three decades, however this film is held together and overwhelmed by the presence of Christopher Walken. Walken is equal part charismatic and terrifying in a role that would test the limits of what audience are willing to accept. He is truly mesmerizing. It is with great pleasure that we look back at these classic 80s performances. Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many Thanks for your continued support.

Welcome back to the Rock 'n Roll Ghost Podcast. On this week's episode, the Ghost speaks with filmmaker James Foley (Glengarry Glen Ross, At Close Range, House of Cards) about his career and the project he's waiting to shoot, Reagan and Gorbachev, which will star Michael Douglas, Christoph Waltz and Noomi Rapace. Foley talks about his early days making Reckless (Aidan Quinn, Daryl Hannah) and directing Madonna in a iconic videos (Papa Don't Preach) and the box-office bomb Who's That Girl. He is also quite frank in his original disliking of the Fifty Shades of Grey sequels he made, having to film both back to back with scripts that were never at a filmable stage. But he credits star Dakota Johnson for being a professional of the highest order who helped keep him focused and in the game. He also mentions how happy he is that the films have a global fan base that show their appreciation for his work. Interspersed with tales of filming Glengarry Glen Ross (Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon), Fear (Mark Wahlberg, Reese Witherspoon) and The Chamber (Gene Hackman), Foley also discusses having Penn as a house mate for nearly 2 years and about hanging out in London with Penn and Madonna during their marriage. Strap yourself in for a pretty wild ride through a spectacular career, one that Foley says is just getting started. On today's podcast, we discuss the film subgenre known as rural crime movies: revenge plots, deep family secrets, failed kidnappings, and the lure of quick and easy money — all right in the middle of Anywhere, USA. ‘Bonnie and Clyde', ‘The Getaway' (1972 & 1994), ‘Blood Simple', ‘At Close Range', ‘A Simple Plan', ‘Fargo', and ‘No Country for Old Men' are just a few of the films we explore as we try to determine what sets rural crime apart from other crime movies. Also, what do we learn about the human condition by telling these tales against the backdrop of the deep South, the Heartland, and the modern day American frontier?

Retired agent Dave Richter served in the FBI for more than 33 years, ten as a support employee and 23 as a special agent. During most of his agent career, he worked violent crime, general criminal, and white-collar crime matters out of the Philadelphia Division’s Newton Square Resident Agency. In this episode of FBI Retired Case File Review, he reviews his investigation of the Johnston Gang, a violent family-based robbery, and burglary ring responsible for millions of dollars of thefts and convicted of the murders of six witnesses. The gang operated for more than 20 years in the rural areas of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and New York, stealing everything they could get their hands on, especially farm machinery. Dave Richter believes that the investigation was a success and the Johnston brothers were brought to justice due to the combined efforts of the federal, state, county, and local law enforcement agencies assigned. Joel Sartore is a photographer, speaker, author, teacher and a 20-year contributor to National Geographic magazine. His hallmarks are a sense of humor and a Midwestern work ethic. Joe’s assignments have taken him to every continent and to the world’s most beautiful and challenging environments, from the High Arctic to the Antarctic. Simply put, Joel is on a mission to document endangered species and landscapes in order to show a world worth saving. His interest in nature started in childhood, when he learned about the very last passenger pigeon from one of his mother’s Time-Life books. He has since been chased by a wide variety of species including wolves, grizzlies, musk oxen, lions, elephants and polar bears. His first National Geographic assignment introduced him to nature photography, and also allowed him to see human impact on the environment first-hand. In his words, “It is folly to think that we can destroy one species and ecosystem after another and not affect humanity. When we save species, we’re actually saving ourselves.” In addition to his work he has done for National Geographic, Joel has contributed to Audubon Magazine, Geo, Time, Life, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated and numerous book project. Joel and his work have been the subjects of several national broadcasts including National Geographic’s Explorer, The NBC Nightly NEws, NPR’s Weekend Edition and an hour-long PBS documentary, At Close Range. His also a contributor to the CBS Sunday Morning Show with Charles Osgood. http://www.joelsartore.com/ http://www.michaelnicknichols.com/ www.thecandidframe.com info@thecandidframe.com www.squarespace.com/candidframe www.lynda.com/thecandidframe
