Have you've tuned in to your true calling in life? Have you heard the whispers? Are you avoiding the pursuit of your true calling because… what if it fails? What would that mean? This is not an easy path to walk and we have both been in places in the past where we were merely surviving and moments we didn't want to be here anymore. After many painstaking years, we both love where we are at and the pursuits we get to chase everyday. In this episode, we're going to discuss finding your purpose and your calling and what that looks like to pursuit it wholeheartedly. We'll share examples from both of our lives, the soul beauty of dogs, when it's a wrong turn vs when it just feels uncomfortable, and more. --------------------- Rate, Review, and Follow on Apple Podcasts “I love these conversations!” If that sounds like you, please consider rating and reviewing the show. This week on Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast, Pete and Nikki explore what it means to be uncomfortable and why that's not always a bad thing. The inspiration for this topic came from Melissa reflecting on a step in the GPS process where members review past experiences with strategies and tools from the previous week. She wondered whether it was the tool/strategy that wasn't working or if it just felt uncomfortable because it was new. Melissa asked if we're giving up too quickly on new things by saying they don't work for us when maybe we haven't given them enough time. So, what does it mean to be uncomfortable or outside your comfort zone? Dictionary definitions describe it as feeling unease, awkwardness, distress or lack of confidence. Many ADHDers regularly feel this way, and these are feelings we try to eliminate with new strategies. So why stick with a new system if it brings up the same negative emotions? There's a bit of a sidetrack around systems with acronyms that can distract from the real effort, all while increasing discomfort, which poses the question: is discomfort important? The bottom line? Don't let initial discomfort lead you to quit on a new strategy too soon. Stick with it, and you might find great benefits once you move past the unease of the unfamiliar. Discomfort doesn't have to last forever.Links & NotesLearning to Learn and the Navigation of Moods: The Meta-Skill for the Acquisition of SkillsDig into the podcast Shownotes Database (00:00) - Welcome to Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast (03:59) - Getting Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable (20:34) - Discomfort Signaling ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Her TED Talk on teaming has been viewed more than 3 million times. She is the author of Right Kind of Wrong: The Science of Failing Well*. Many leaders espouse the value of talking about our failures. Yet, failure is a threat to our ego, so it turns out we're better at learning from the failures of others than we are from our own. In this conversation, Amy and I explore how to do a better job of growing where we're in the wrong. Key Points Failure is a threat to our ego. As a result, we're more likely to learn from the failures of others than from our own failures. It's hard to learn if you already know. If you came frame situations more helpfully, it can substantially influence your ability to grow from being wrong. Disrupt the inevitable emotional response to being wrong by asking this: how was I feeling before this happened? Challenge yourself by considering if the content of your thoughts are useful for your goal. A key question: what other interpretation of the situation is possible? Choose to say or do something that moves you closer to your goals. This question will help: what is going to best help me achieve my goals? This week, we're exploring the transformative power of the "yes, and..." principle, a cornerstone of improv performance. This simple yet effective phrase encourages performers to not only accept but also expand upon their partners' spontaneous ideas. How can this mindset apply to daily life for those of us with ADHD? Today, we're navigating how to use comedy to handle unexpected situations with ease and resilience. We dive into the concept of "yes, and..." as a tool for embracing and moving forward through challenging, unexpected, or complex moments. By replacing the instinctive "no, but..." response with a more adaptive and flexible attitude, it becomes easier to face adversity head-on and maintain momentum. We discuss the rejection faced by performers, writers, and directors alike, their coping strategies, and how they manage not to take rejection personally. By drawing parallels with rejection sensitivity dysphoria (RSD), we uncover techniques to foster acceptance and perseverance.Mandy Kaplan is an actress, vo artist, singer, writer, ninja and podcast host living in LA. Her voice can be heard in hundreds of commercials/video games/and SO many audiobooks. Onscreen, she can be seen starring in the feature film 30 Nights of Sex to Save Your Marriage available on Tubi TV for free right now, a film she also co-wrote and produced. Her cabaret Miscast: Right Singer, Wrong Song has been running in LA for over 12 years.Mandy Fabian was the director and creator of Lifetime's first digital series, The Young Hillary Diaries, and co-created and wrote the Amazon series Dropping the Soap, which won Jane Lynch an Emmy! She's a Sony Television Directing Program Fellow, was named “Best New Filmmaker of the Year” by NewFilmmakers LA, and her latest screenplay, Late Bloomer, was selected for the Meryl Streep/Oprah Winfrey Writers Lab. Most recently, she completed her feature directorial debut Jess Plus None, an awkward comedy that will be released in the fall of 2023.Together, they co-host the Mandcave, a podcast about two best friends who have nothing in common except their names on TruStory FM. Our ultimate goal for this episode is to inspire listeners to find humor amidst life's challenges. By nurturing a comedic perspective and using it as a roadmap back to happiness, we hope to encourage a more profound reflection on the power of laughter in overcoming adversity.Links & Notes Check out the Mandys in their podcast: Mandcave In LA? Is fear and self-doubt preventing you from building your personal brand and growing your recruitment business? In this episode, you'll discover how my guest Mike O'Riordan overcomes his tendency to be a perfectionist, pushes outside his comfort zone and gets things done. Mike is the founder of Blackwater Search & Advisory, a global executive search and advisory firm focused on the ETF and Digital Assets market. I've known Mike for almost 3 years and have witnessed his rapid growth from a one-man band with no recruitment industry experience to running a hugely successful boutique. Get ready to be inspired by Mike's story and learn how to overcome the pitfalls of perfectionism in your recruitment business. Episode Outline and Highlights [01:49] Mike's catchphrase, “I'm executing the shit out of this stuff.” [03:33] What is an ETF? [05:20] Why Mike shifted from a decades-long career in banking to recruiting. [11:04] Is the negative perception of recruiters justified? [19:50] The company's current size and structure after four years. [23:12] The impact of hiring an effective marketing person. [28:24] Why perfectionism can cost you millions of dollars. [33:10] How digital marketing has been a game changer for Mike's business. [42:47] Why an email newsletter is a good way to start marketing. [45:17] Discussion about creating video content - Mike's journey. [48:40] Get comfortable in being uncomfortable - why getting out of your comfort zone is critical to success. [54:00] What's next for the Blackwater search? Perfectionism Can Cost You Millions of Dollars Mike and I first spoke back in March 2020, and he was one of the first people who enrolled in my Billings Accelerator program, which has evolved into our Inner Circle community of recruitment business owners. Despite having less recruitment experience, Mike made faster progress than many others in his cohort. The reason? Mike is someone who implements like crazy. I remember asking him how he was doing that, achieving so much in a short time. His answer: “Mark, I am just executing the shit out of this stuff.” What a catchphrase! Mike is now successfully running a global ETF and Digital Assets consulting and executive search firm. In retrospect, Mike never would have imagined achieving so much after spending 20 years as a salaryman in financial institutions. To what does he attribute his success? For Mike, it is about just getting it done. It does not have to be perfect. The most important thing is just to do it. You can always improve it later. I agree with this a hundred percent! I'm certain that perfectionism has personally cost me a million dollars or more. Looking back on my 21 years as a coach, I can truly relate to how perfectionism - another word for procrastination - has lost me so much potential. That is why this interview with Mike is an eye-opener to so many recruitment business owners out there. Whatever business strategy you are struggling to implement, it doesn't have to be perfect, what matters is you go out and do it. Effective Recruitment Marketing is a Game Changer Another area that we explored in our conversation is the importance of having an effective marketing person on your team. For Mike, this has been a game-changer. You will hear how their marketing strategies have enabled them to leapfrog ahead of their competition and win business with clients that are household names. Some of the marketing implementations that were discussed by Mike are: Newsletter Market Insight Reports Salary Survey Video Series Podcast Webinars We discussed what changed Mike's mind about recording videos, as to begin with it was not his cup of tea. Just like most of us, he hated to hear his own voice. But he didn't let the fact he was uncomfortable stop him from taking action. Get Comfortable in Being Uncomfortable A known enemy of success is being too comfortable, which may hinder you from stepping out of your comfort zone. Mike and I believe that getting comfortable with being uncomfortable relates to everything in life. If you are not uncomfortable, you may not be trying hard enough, or not pushing yourself enough. “When our back sets to the wall, that is when we really realize that there is stuff we can do we never really imagined,” as Mike puts it. The same with a recruitment business, stepping outside of your comfort zone is key to your success. Signs, signs, everywhere signs...do this, don't do this, can't you read the sign? Many of us seek signs from God, the Universe and beyond to help us make decisions. To guide us in our days and give clarity. But there's often so much in the way that keep us from recognizing the signs that are there for us every single day.I'd like to share a personal story about my accident last week, and the abruptness it created in my mind and heart. We are often given subtle and dramatic signs, sometimes that feel wonderful and encouraging, and sometimes with some of life's "medicine" to reach our soul. This medicine is often of healing, teaching, guidance and deeper work that sometimes doesn't feel so wanted. Some of the lessons I learned from my accident and the very impactful experience:*Be gentle with yourself and others*Love is the power that breaks through our own and others inner demons and blockages that help us connection* Not just to listen, but to follow, my intuition*Follow and heed the messages of the spirit world, animal totems, numerology and how it supports your life and reminds you of your strengths and places we need to strengthen*Signs don't always come in the way we want or expect, but important nonthelessThank you for listening and I hope this episode is helpful for you in some way. Ajeev discusses how the situations of his past have transformed into motivation for his future as he charts a new course for philanthropy and invites us to get Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable.
What makes you feel uncomfortable? How do you cope with difficult situations which make you feel uncomfortable? Do you shy away from these situations or avoid making tough decisions because of your discomfort? Has it held you back in your trading, in life, and does it continue to hold you back? Being able to cope with anxiety inducing situations that make us feel uncomfortable lies at the very epicentre of many of the biggest challenges in life. I have a love/hate relationship with discomfort. I hate it because it's uncomfortable but I love it because it means I'm growing. Maybe ‘love' is too strong of a word but I do appreciate discomfort. My mentor, Brooke Castillo says discomfort is the currency of your dreams. You have to pay the price of being uncomfortable in order to get what you want. When you start to see discomfort as an acknowledgement you're taking a bit of a risk, as an indication that you're growing and realize it shows up when you're stepping outside of your comfort zone, your relationship with it will change. Your perspective of discomfort will shift from something that is ‘bad' to something that is ‘good.' Think about it … if you were ‘willing' to be uncomfortable, what would change? What could you accomplish if being uncomfortable didn't mean something was wrong, it meant you were actually doing it right? That's what I'm talking about in this episode, The Upside of Being Uncomfortable. After listening to it you'll never look at discomfort the same way again.
This episode is meant to inspire and illicit personal reflection of how we can allow discomfort in our lives for the purpose of emotional healing growth and mindset expansion to reach our higher selves. When thinking about discomfort we might think of taking risks, making change, fear of the unknown, not trusting our intuition, or an intentional and spiritual practice of choosing a bit of discomfort as a way to keep us present and aware of our choices in the now. Leah talks with her intern Natalie about what it means to feel comfort and how that potentially holds us back in our personal development and ways we can shift our thinking to allow trust in ourselves and God or the universe to support us in uneasy times. To find more about Leah and her work please visit her site.

RESOURCES/LINKS MENTIONEDThe Power of Being Uncomfortable by Billy Dha KidRich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki | Audible, Paperback ABOUT BILLY DHA KIDDBilly Dha Kidd is better known for his rapping than his real estate skills, but both careers are worth celebrating. Billy's early life was anything but comfortable — growing up in El Salvador, he was used to no running water and no electricity. He likes to say that he didn't start at zero but started at negative one-hundred. Billy's family immigrated to the United States when he was 10 years old, moving first to California and then later to Nebraska. As a teenager, Billy began rapping as a way for him to express himself but found he loved the craft. Rapping allowed Billy to fill his time with something positive, instead of taking the wrong path many of his friends were on. His rap taught him sales skills, business skills, how taxes work, and most importantly, how to make money. Reading stories of generational wealth, Billy was compelled to start investing in real estate. He got his first deal, learned a lot about the BRRRR strategy, and continued to put his knowledge to work. Now, he's sitting on twenty-two doors between eighteen different properties. He gives credit to simply taking responsibility for his outcomes, instead of blaming others or the system around him. Two amazing humans navigate the grey as the break down the domino concept. This came to us from a listener who turned us on to a TedTalk by Luvvie Ajayi Jones entitled Get Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable. In her TedTalk, Luvvie talks about being a domino and how sometimes you have to be the first one to fall and others fall with you. It isn't done without fear or discomfort, but we can make change if we "fall" first. This related so much to many of the things we talk about on the pod and how we can make lasting change.Support the show (https://cash.app/$blackblondepod)

Types of Identity (0:30)There is a relationship between racial identity and athletic identity. Racial identity: the significance and meaning of race in one's life (physical features - skin colour )Ethnic identity looks to your nationality - cultural values Athletic identity: the degree to which individuals identify as athletesResearch Findings (2:10)Research in the early 2000s - Jackson and colleagues and Brown and colleaguesHigher athletic identity in black student-athletes resulted in dissociation of these individuals and their racial-ethnic group memberships Problem: the higher the athletic identity of these black students, the less they perceived racial discrimination to be a problem in the U.SWhy am I talking about this? Athletic identity enhances one's sense of self, self-confidence, & self-worth Feel accepted because of their athletic talentsMy Athletic Identity (6:20) When I was seen as value-added to my hockey team - my racial identity never came to mind. I got to forget that there were challenges being black (sheltered lifestyle)I was reminded when I had to think twice before retaliating to avoid harsher consequences - it looks worse if a black kid does it. I didn't want to change how others perceived meRelevance of Identity in Sports (11:00)Sports should not be an escape from who we are, it should bring us together because of who we are. Unique traits allow for stronger connections to ourselves and others Improves performance - teammates with a stronger bond gel together Olympic Games effect - nations come together and unify us all CTA: Check out Blog Post (15:00)Check out my first blog post on interruptingsports.com to learn more about why it is time for the Interrupting Sports podcast. Our inability to step out of our comfort zone limits our experiences Personal Anecdote (17:36) Growing up sheltered, I became comfortable being the only black kid in a room and uncomfortable being among black kids. I formed a community to overcome my uncomfortable state. Significance in Sports (21:19)We need to have the difficult conversations to move beyond our ways.Get out of your comfort zone - be honest with yourself Unlearn our poor behaviours - making assumptions/biasesAcknowledge and embrace the good, the bad, and the ugly of our realityThat is how we grow and progress the culture of sport - expand our minds and change our perspective Summary of Points (23:40)Recognize the components of our identity: racial, ethnic, and athletic identity - embrace who we are as individuals to unify us Acknowledge our realities and hold ourselves accountable to overcome biases and progress the culture of sports
