According to The Guardian, Kevin Young, director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), has been on personal leave since March 14. His absence, first reported by The Washington Post, comes as President Donald Trump targets the Smithsonian with an executive order to eliminate what he calls divisive or anti-American ideology. Shanita Brackett is now serving as interim director. Though there's no official link between Young's leave and the order, the timing has raised questions. The order specifically criticized the NMAAHC for its portrayal of aspects of white culture. Kevin Young has led the museum since 2021. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

By the time I left Jordan Hall, I felt that I was levitating,” Jones recalls about a night in 1956. Grant shares a similar experience about opening Sweet Home Café. “Walking in that cafeteria the day before opening and seeing these murals on our walls, seeing these awesome quotes, the picture of the Woolworth dine-in boycott… You see the resiliency of us as African Americans and what we contributed to American society. In February 2022, Into America launched “Reconstructed,” a series about the legacy of Reconstruction. The story begins in the late 1860s, as the newly freed became citizens under the law and Black men gained the right to vote. Black Americans across the South suddenly had the power to exert control over their own lives. In the face of horrific violence from their white neighbors, Black people voted in liberal governments across the South, elevating hundreds of their own to places of political power. Perhaps no one exemplifies this more than the late Congressman Robert Smalls. As his great-great-grandson Michael Boulware Moore tells Trymaine Lee, Smalls' daring escape from slavery and wartime actions made him a hero. Then, like hundreds of newly freed Black Americans, he decided to get involved in politics in his hometown of Beaufort, South Carolina. And more than a century later, we still see the impact of this brief time of Black political power, through people like the current Democratic National Committee chair and South Carolina native Jaime Harrison, who tells Trymaine how today's 20th-Century fight for voting rights is a continuation of the Reconstruction era. (Original release date: February 3, 2022)Thoughts? We're off! Our interviewee for this first episode of the Design Emergency podcast is the Ghanaian-British architect, David Adjaye. As well as designing some of the most compelling buildings of recent years, including the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C., David is at the forefront of the development of Africa's dynamic architecture scene. In this interview with Design Emergency's co-founder, Alice Rawsthorn, he discusses the challenges and opportunities of designing responsibly in the vast, complex, and intensely eclectic African continent. David – Sir David, as he is now – was born in Tanzania to Ghanian parents. The family lived in several countries during his childhood as his father was a diplomat, eventually settling in London where David studied architecture and founded his practice. Beginning by designing friends' houses, he moved on to cultural spaces including the NMAAHC and the soon to be completed Studio Museum in Harlem. Since 2000, he has conducted a personal research project into Africa's rich, but often ignored architectural heritage. David and his family are now based in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, where he leads a studio of over a hundred, mostly young, West African architects working on landmark commissions including the National Cathedral of Ghana and the Edo Museum of West African Art in Benin City. Tune in to hear him discussing those projects, and architecture's role in forging positive change in Africa. You'll find images of the projects David describes in this interview on our Instagram @design.emergency. You can also follow his research into African architecture on his Instagram @adjaye_visual_sketchbook, and find out more about his work at Adjaye Associates on its Instagram @adjayeassociates and its website www.adjaye.com. This week's panel features PJ Media journalist Megan Fox and L (SomeBitchIKnow) from SomeBitch Media. They begin with an overview of Megan's dogged pursuit of the truth regarding the rape of a 10-year-old Ohio girl whose story was dishonestly used by activists seeking to catastrophize the recent Dobbs ruling overturning Roe v. Wade. L then answers a question from chat about how to find an online record of lies, distortions, and misbehavior from leftist media, politicians, and leaders. Trayvon Martin's hoodie was never supposed to end up in an exhibit on Reconstruction at the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture. But then the 17-year-old boy was shot and killed in Sanford, Florida, by a self-appointed neighborhood watch captain, while carrying nothing but a cell phone, a pack of Skittles, and a can of iced tea. Kidada Williams, a history professor at Wayne State University tells Trymaine Lee that she sees a clear through line between Reconstruction and Trayvon Martin. “The way he was targeted for minding his own business, the way he was demonized, and in some cases blamed for his own [death] is very consistent with what happened during Reconstruction,” she explains.Like Emmett Till before him, Trayvon's story galvanized a people and changed a nation. Protests sprang up across the country as the story gained traction, helped in large part by Trymaine Lee's reporting. A generation of young people became activists, and when the man who killed Trayvon was acquitted, arguing he acted in self-defense, the phrase “Black Lives Matter” was born and became a rallying cry.Without Trayvon, there would have been no groundwork for the uprisings in Ferguson after Michael Brown was killed, no global movement in place to fuel the protests for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. But when Trayvon became a face of the movement, it came with a cost — one that Tracy Martin, Trayvon's father, knows too well. "I'm giving to society, but do society really understand what I've given up?” he asks. "We don't look to bury our kids. We don't look to eulogize them or try to define what their legacy is to be. And during that process, man, it just, it really tears you up.” For a transcript, please visit https://www.msnbc.com/intoamerica. Thoughts? Feedback? Story ideas? On June 17, 2015, a white extremist shot and killed nine Black people in the Mother Emanuel AME church in Charleston, South Carolina as they gathered for a bible study group. This wasn't the first time Mother Emanuel had been attacked. Church historian Elizabeth Alston tells Trymaine Lee, that in the 1820s, white people burned down Mother Emanuel in retaliation over a failed slave rebellion. For years, the congregation was forced to meet in secret. But through all the violence and backlash, the Black congregants relied on their faith, and during Reconstruction, they rebuilt. Mother Emanuel's history mirrors the story of Black America. Through the centuries, faith has helped Black people find freedom, community, and strength, even in the face of violence. In episode three of ‘Reconstructed,' Into America explores the legacy of faith through Reconstruction. Historian Kidada Williams shares testimonies of the devastating violence and terrorism that white people inflicted upon their Black neighbors. And Spencer Crew, co-curator of the National Museum of African American History and Culture's exhibit on Reconstruction, explains how faith and the church were vital to the survival of newly freed people. This tradition of faith in the face of backlash holds true today. Trymaine talks with Bree Newsome Bass, whose incredible protest of scaling a 30-foot pole to take down the Confederate flag from the South Carolina state capitol made her an icon of the movement. Bree's actions led to the permanent removal of the Confederate flag from the state house. And she tells Trymaine that faith was the foundation of it all.For a transcript, please visit https://www.msnbc.com/intoamerica. Thoughts? Feedback? Story ideas? In 1865, General William Tecumseh Sherman asked a group of African Americans in Georgia what they needed most to start their new lives as free people. The answer: land. This led to Sherman's order that every Black family in the region receive 40 acres, and an Army mule if they liked. It was a promise the government decided not to keep, but where the government failed, the newly freed made their own way. In the second episode of Reconstructed, Into America continues its deep dive into Reconstruction, collaborating with the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture. We explore how across the South, Black Americans began acquiring land to secure autonomy, protection, generational wealth, and community. Often, they were operating on property that had been owned by their former enslavers. Promised Land, South Carolina was one of those communities. Founded just after the Civil War in the Upcountry region, Promised Land was self-sufficient, with a church, school, and farms to nourish its people's mind and body. In a visit to the town, Trymaine Lee talks to Reverend Willie Neal Norman Jr. and Elestine Smith Norman, a couple who can trace their Promised Lands roots back over a century. And Into America travels to rural Georgia to learn about a group of 19 families who bought several hundred acres in 2020 with the dream of creating a new town: Freedom. “Freedom is the answer to our ancestors' prayers,” co-founder Ashley Scott tells Trymaine. “Going forward and building Freedom is in honor of the blood, the sweat, the tears that they laid down for us in the past.”For a transcript, please visit https://www.msnbc.com/intoamerica. Thoughts? One question has plagued our nation since its founding: will Black people in America ever experience full citizenship?  In searching for an answer, Into America is collaborating with the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture for a series on the legacy of Reconstruction. We tour the museum's Make Good the Promises exhibit with co-curator Spencer Crew, who helps use artifacts to bring the history of the era to life. Over four episodes, ‘Reconstructed' will explore how after the Civil War, Black Americans gained citizenship and political power, planted roots and formed communities on newly acquired land, and how the newly freed drew on their faith to carry them through violent white backlash. The story begins in the late 1860s, as the newly freed became citizens under the law and Black men gained the right to vote.Black Americans across the South suddenly had the power to exert control over their own lives. In the face of horrific violence from their white neighbors, Black people voted in liberal governments across the South, elevating hundreds of their own to places of political power. Perhaps no one exemplifies this more than the lateCongressman Robert Smalls. Smalls helped found the state'sRepublican Party in 1868 and served in the state legislature, where he crafted laws to create the first free compulsory public school system in the country. In 1874, he was elected to the US House of Representatives, where he remained for five terms. Not long after Smalls left office, much of the progress of Reconstruction had been undone by a combination of white violence, Northern apathy, and severe voting restrictions aimed at Black Americans. And more than a century later, we still see the impact of this brief time of Black political power, through people like the current Democratic National Committee chair and South Carolina native Jaime Harrison, who tells Trymaine how today's 20th-Century fight for voting rights is a continuation of the Reconstruction era. For a transcript, please visit https://www.msnbc.com/intoamerica. Thoughts? We asked a few of our guests their predictions for the U.S. Government technology in 2022. First, we have Willie Hicks, public sector CTO at Dynatrace. The AI arms race. Will you talk about that a little bit and talk about where you see the U.S.' position in the AI arms race? I know this ties into the massive, National Security Commission's on Artificial Intelligence final report. Willie: Yes. The term AI arms race is actually in academia and industry, it's a debated term. Are we in an arms race? Some people are more purists when they think of an arms race. You think about the Cold War, you think about past arms races. There are certain criteria around that. Like the money that's being spent on, if you think of a conventional type arms race, both sides. Or multiple sides are investing millions, billions of dollars on arms, on different weapon systems, on trying to keep up, or keeping a step ahead of the adversary. You could argue two things. One, that you don't see that kind of spending today in AI, at least from the government. You do see spending across the board, industry-wise, a higher increase on spending. But some would argue that just by that definition, it's not really an arms race. You can make the argument that AI itself is not a weapon. AI is a tool that could be used to make weapons more lethal, more effective, but in itself, AI is not a weapon. By the textbook, there's some debate if there is, but let's just set all that aside to answer your question. How to Stay AdvancedWillie: Leave out spending. There is definitely increased competition. If we want to say that there is a race from a technology standpoint, that's from industry and from the government, and that's underway today. We see that daily in the advances and the money that's being spent in AI. But also you see that in the national security report that you had mentioned. There are a lot of studies going on. How do we technologically stay advanced or ahead of our adversaries? Or, at least, we've got to make sure that we stay on top because at the end of the day, AI could be just like anything. AI could be used for many wonderful things. Like I was saying in medical applications, we saw this during COVID. People often think about, "Wow, the vaccines that we have, they came out really rapidly." Some people say not fast enough, but how long vaccines usually take? It came out very rapidly. A lot of that is due to some new techniques for the whole RNA type of vaccine. But also, there was a lot of AI. There was a lot of compute horsepower that went behind the analysis of a lot of these drugs, a lot of the virus, DNA strains and all that. There is a lot of good. But then, AI, this technology arms race, this competition could also be used by state actors. I even hesitate and sometimes I don't even like to think about it. It could make war more lethal, more kinetic. Let's just say it can make weapon systems run out of control. We're not going to the Skynet world where things just take over. But what you...

Carolyn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rayvnkm/ (Ravyn Manuel) is Senior Application Developer at Smithsonian Institute National Museum of African-American History and Culture. The NMAAHC is the 19th museum of the Smithsonian that has been open since 2016. Since opening, it has collected over 36,000 artifacts and gained nearly 100,000 members. It was awarded the People's Voice Webby Award in 2017. Mark: Can you describe your role in the context of a modern museum experience? What that means and what your role is at the museum? Carolyn: Why do we even need an application developer? Having been through it, I have to look back and I'm like, oh yes, the technology was huge. I didn't notice it at the time. Looking back on it, the technology is what really bathed me and immersed me a lot in the experience, especially as I moved up. Ravyn: That is awesome. It was so integrated, that you felt it was just part of that experience from what I was hired for. Our museum is not just the only one that has application developers. There are other museums because every museum and gallery has a website. We have to have somebody on staff to actually maintain the website. I don't work on the website, I actually have three hats. The Whole Purpose of SmithsonianRavyn: One, when there are smaller exhibits and they are interactive. Those things that you touch, which are going to be contactless, moving forward. Those are the things that I develop. Or I will work with a designer like the UI, UX designer then develop these interactives. These will bring home the message that the education department would like people to take away from an exhibit. The whole purpose of the Smithsonian itself is for education. When we make an exhibit, it isn't just to have you have a feeling. It's also for you to have an opinion for you to be immersed in that history. To walk away with some knowledge that you didn't know before, or to change your opinion about what you felt before. My role as an application developer is the R and D person. I look at spaces in our museum and I go, how can we get the message across better here? What would help make this, not only a fun engaging process but also help people learn? My particular interest is in accessibility. I'm always looking for ways to make our interactions or the museum visit accessible for people who may not be able to experience it with their eyes. For people who may not be able to hear the audio that's going on or have cognitive differences and how they actually interpret. That's what I do. I'll make a prototype, show it to my supervisor and say, what do you think about this? Most of the time, what I feel isn't going to go there. But it gives me a chance to say, “here's how we can use technology to actually assist people in their experience and to tell the story in an engaging way.” Interactive ExhibitsRavyn: A lot of our exhibits are interactive, some of them are really huge. Through the ASA Restoration Project that he started in 2008 to honor the legacy of the late Dr. Asa Hilliard, Tony Browder has raised funds for the excavation and restoration of two 25th dynasty tombs that Dr. Elena Pischikova discovered in Luxor, Egypt in 2006. (Hilliard was a professor of educational psychology who focused on indigenous ancient Egyptian history.) Both Pischikova and Browder disagree with traditional Egyptologists that claim that the 25th dynasty was the "only" time that Black kings ruled Egypt. Nevertheless, Browder adds, “Our mission is to eventually excavate all three tombs, catalogue our findings, and clean, conserve and restore the tombs to their original condition.” The work is hard he explained in 2011, "we work in 100 to120 degree temperatures and in pits 20 feet below the surface." On the next Port Of Harlem Talk Radio, he talks more about the Project and it's success. We also contrast those laws with proposed laws in The Gambia, and back in The States, we look at Marjorie Green-Taylor's America First Caucus from a historical lens, too. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/port-of-harlem-talk-radio/support

Read Full Story HERE  "Watching Oprah," will open to the public on June 8, 2018, at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The exhibition looks at how America shaped Oprah, but even more importantly, how Oprah shaped America and the world. "This exhibition examines the power of television," said Lonnie G. Bunch III, the museum's founding director. Just as Oprah Winfrey watched TV coverage of the civil rights movement and was shaped by the era in which she was born and raised, Ms. Winfrey has gone on to have a profound effect on how Americans view themselves and each other in the tumultuous decades that followed. Her exhibits stand amidst other women giants in America such as Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Ida B Wells and Maya Angelou - women who have not only been shaped by America, but who have transformed America to rise to higher levels of consciousness. The exhibition is in three parts: America Shapes Oprah 1950s -1980s, The Oprah Winfrey Show and Oprah Shapes America. It takes you on her journey over the past 25 years and leaves you at the "Oprah Effect" - her ability to shape public opinion and change people's lives for the better. "Watching Oprah" is located in the museum's Special Exhibitions gallery, a 4,300 square-foot exhibition space located on the concourse level near the elevator that takes visitors to the first level of the History Galleries. When asked by Sister Jenna how the exhibition impacted them personally, Curator Rhea L. Combs shared that it reminded her of our humanity and how much we share in common and Curator Kathleen M. Kendrick gave a touching response that life carries a higher purpose, if we so choose.
