You move to the U.S. with strong technical skills, ready to grow, but over time, you find yourself stuck—working in outdated technologies, unable to switch jobs because of immigration processes, and ultimately risking your long-term career prospects. If this sounds like you or someone you know, stay tuned. We're going to break this down—why this happens, what risks it creates, and how to avoid getting trapped in a stagnant job. Let's get started!"#H1B #CareerGrowth #JobMarket #Upskilling #GreenCardBacklog #TechCareers #VisaChallenges #StayRelevant #WorkVisa #Immigration #CareerAdvice #TechJobs #ITCareer #AdaptAndGrowThe First 6 Years on H1-B: The Golden Phase* When professionals first arrive in the U.S. on an H1-B visa, they usually have solid technical skills. They are excited, ambitious, and eager to prove themselves.* Typically, these professionals work hard, upskill, and establish themselves within their companies.* Their employer and client see their value and realize that retaining them beyond the six-year H1-B limit is beneficial to the company. At this point, things are looking great. But then, a critical transition happens—one that many H1-B professionals don't think about early enough. The Green Card Backlog and Getting Stuck* After 6 years, if the employer wants to retain them, they begin the Green Card process.* For Indian nationals, the backlog is extreme. Right now, applications from 2011 are still being processed. That means many professionals could be waiting decades, even 100+ years, for their Green Card.* So, what happens? The employer files an I-140, which allows H1-B extensions beyond six years, effectively keeping the employee on an H1-B indefinitely.* This is where the real problem begins. The Trap: Why H1-B Professionals Stop GrowingOnce their Green Card is in process, many H1-B professionals start playing it safe:* They avoid switching jobs because restarting the Green Card process with a new employer feels risky.* If their client's technology is outdated, they don't push for learning new skills.* They prioritize job security over career growth. This comfort zone is what kills long-term career prospects. The Risk of Outdated SkillsLet's talk about why this is a dangerous trap:* Technology is moving fast.* What was in demand 10 years ago is obsolete today. If your skills are not updated, you will struggle to get a new job.* The longer you stay in outdated technologies, the harder it is to transition.* Employers look for people with hands-on experience in new tools. If you've been working on legacy systems for 10 years, moving to a modern tech stack will be very difficult.* What if you lose your job?* Imagine you lose your job today.* You're now competing with younger, more up-to-date professionals.* Your visa clock is ticking. If you don't find another job in 60 days, you must leave the U.S.* At that point, you realize how staying stagnant has put your career at risk. How to Avoid This Trap? The good news is—this situation is avoidable. Here's what you can do:* Upskill Regularly* Stay ahead of industry trends.* Take online courses, get certifications, and work on side projects.* Platforms like Coursera, Udemy, LinkedIn Learning, and EdX can help you stay competitive.* Be Open to New Opportunities* Don't be afraid to switch jobs.* Yes, your employer filed your Green Card, but you can port your priority date to a new employer and restart the process.* Network with Other Professionals* Join industry groups, attend meetups, and connect with hiring managers.* The best opportunities often come from networking, not job applications.* Have a Backup Plan* If you feel your current employer is limiting your growth, consider alternative options.* If the Green Card backlog is 100 years, it's worth considering returning to India or other countries where opportunities are growing fast.Final Thoughts: Your Career is Your ResponsibilityIf you're on an H1-B, remember:✅ You must take control of your career.✅ Don't stay in a job just for visa security.✅ Upskilling and staying relevant is non-negotiable.✅ Be strategic—look at your long-term career, not just short-term visa status.H1-B is an opportunity, not a trap. But only if you stay proactive. If you found this episode useful, share it with friends, colleagues, or anyone who might be stuck in this cycle. What drains our energy? What boosts it? How can we manage these factors to make the most of our time and feel our best every day? Today, we'll explore common energy drainers, how to identify them, and practical ways to boost your energy for a more productive, fulfilling year. Energy DrainersLet's start with the things that slowly but surely deplete our energy. Often, we don't even realize these habits or situations are affecting us until we're completely burned out. Identifying and eliminating energy drainers is step one in preserving your mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Here are the top five culprits:1. Saying "yes" to everything* It's tempting to say yes to every request, invitation, or opportunity that comes your way—whether at work, with friends, or within your family.* The problem? You're spreading yourself too thin. By saying "yes" to everything, you're likely saying "no" to yourself.* This doesn't mean you have to reject every request, but be selective. Evaluate your time, priorities, and energy before committing to something. Practice saying "no" respectfully—it's a powerful skill.2. Overanalyzing* We've all been there—spending hours overthinking a conversation, decision, or event.* Overanalyzing can paralyze you with indecision or leave you emotionally drained. It's a thief of time and mental clarity.* The fix? Learn to trust your instincts. Make decisions based on the information you have, and remind yourself that not everything requires perfection.3. Messy living/work spaces* Our environment plays a significant role in how we feel. A cluttered space equals a cluttered mind.* Whether it's your living room, office, or even your digital workspace, messiness creates stress and overwhelms your brain.* Dedicate time to decluttering regularly—it's amazing how a clean, organized space can make you feel instantly lighter and more energized.4. Negative conversations* Spending too much time with people who complain, gossip, or dwell on negativity can drain you emotionally.* Energy is contagious, and negativity has a way of pulling you down.* Surround yourself with uplifting, positive people who inspire and energize you. And if you find yourself engaging in negativity, consciously steer the conversation in a more constructive direction.5. Overworking* In today's hustle culture, it's easy to fall into the trap of overworking. We push ourselves beyond our limits, thinking it will lead to greater success or recognition.* But overworking comes at a steep cost—burnout, reduced productivity, and strained relationships.* Work smarter, not harder. Set boundaries on your work hours and give yourself permission to rest and recharge.Energy BoostersNow that we've identified what drains us, let's shift gears and talk about how to boost our energy. These are the practices that recharge your batteries and help you feel focused, motivated, and happy. Here are five energy boosters you can incorporate into your daily life:1. Establishing clear boundaries* Boundaries are not selfish; they're essential.* Whether it's in your personal or professional life, clearly communicating what you can and cannot do prevents overcommitment and preserves your energy.* For example, don't check work emails during your personal time, and let others know when you need space or time for yourself.2. Self-care rituals* Self-care isn't just about spa days and bubble baths—it's about consistently doing things that nourish your mind, body, and soul.* This could be as simple as enjoying a morning coffee in peace, journaling, meditating, or reading a book.* Find small rituals that make you feel good, and make them a non-negotiable part of your routine.3. Time outdoors* Nature has an incredible ability to refresh and recharge us.* Even a 10-minute walk outside can boost your mood, increase focus, and reduce stress.* Make it a goal to spend more time outdoors this year, whether it's walking, hiking, or simply sitting in a park.4. Creative hobbies* Doing something creative—whether it's painting, writing, gardening, or cooking—can be incredibly energizing.* Creative hobbies give your brain a chance to relax and express itself, often leading to new ideas and inspiration.* It's not about being perfect at these activities; it's about enjoying the process.5. Exercise* Exercise is one of the most effective ways to boost energy. It releases endorphins, improves circulation, and helps you sleep better.* You don't have to spend hours at the gym—find an activity you enjoy, like dancing, yoga, or cycling.* Even a 20-minute workout can do wonders for your energy levels.Putting It All TogetherSo, how can you balance energy drainers and boosters in your daily life? Here are some tips to help you take action:* Start by identifying your energy drainers.* Take a week to observe what's draining your energy. Is it certain habits, people, or situations? Write them down.* Eliminate or minimize these drainers.* Once you've identified your drainers, come up with a plan to reduce their impact. For example, if messy spaces are draining you, dedicate time to tidying up.* Incorporate energy boosters into your routine.* Pick one or two energy-boosting habits to start with. Remember, small changes lead to big results over time.* Monitor your energy levels.* Reflect regularly on how you're feeling and adjust as needed. Life changes, and so do your energy needs.* Celebrate progress.* Every step you take toward managing your energy is worth celebrating. Acknowledge your efforts and enjoy the benefits of feeling more balanced and energized. As we step into this new year, let's make a commitment to ourselves: to protect and nurture our energy. By identifying and addressing energy drainers and incorporating simple, effective energy boosters, we can set the tone for a healthier, more productive year. Here are few from Archive to check:Thank you for joining me today! If you've ever found yourself in situations where your logical, well-reasoned inputs were ignored, or where it feels like egos and inefficiencies are draining your energy, this episode is for you. We're going to explore why these situations happen, why they feel so frustrating, and, most importantly, how to handle them in a way that protects your peace of mind and allows you to continue excelling in your role. By the end of this episode, I hope to give you not just perspective, but actionable strategies to navigate these challenges. Let's dive in.Why Does This Happen?Let's start with an honest question: Why do some people resist ideas that clearly make sense? Why do teams waste time debating over points that seem obvious? While every situation is unique, there are a few common factors at play:* Ego-Driven Decision-Making* Sometimes, people resist ideas not because they're bad, but because those ideas didn't come from them. They may feel a need to validate their authority or assert their control over a situation. Unfortunately, this often leads to inefficiencies, like reinventing the wheel instead of using a proven solution.* Lack of Technical Expertise* In some cases, the people making decisions may not fully understand the technical implications of their choices. For example, they might favor unnecessarily complex solutions or dismiss simpler, more efficient options because they don't grasp the long-term impact.* Resistance to Collaboration* When people view feedback or alternative ideas as a challenge to their position rather than as an opportunity for collaboration, it creates resistance. This can be especially frustrating when you're trying to contribute constructively.* Fear of Accountability* People sometimes feel safer creating their own solution, even if it's less efficient, because they feel more in control of the outcome. They may see leveraging existing tools or recommendations as tying them to someone else's work—and they fear being held accountable if something goes wrong.* Habitual Behavior* Teams often fall into patterns where collaboration is lopsided. If a team is used to making decisions without fully considering inputs from other stakeholders, it can be difficult to break that habit. Why Does This Frustrate Us?Now, let's talk about why this kind of behavior can feel so deeply frustrating, even for the most patient among us.* You Feel Undervalued* When your expertise is repeatedly dismissed, it can feel like your skills and contributions aren't appreciated. It's disheartening to put in the effort to offer well-reasoned advice, only for it to be ignored.* Wasted Time and Energy* Watching a team implement an inefficient or suboptimal solution, knowing that your recommendation would have saved time and effort, can feel demoralizing. It's especially hard when the outcome eventually aligns with what you originally suggested—but only after unnecessary delays and wasted energy.* Added Stress and Workload* When decisions are made poorly, it often falls on you to clean up the mess later. This added stress and workload can quickly lead to burnout, especially when it feels like these situations are preventable.* You Care About the Outcome* The frustration isn't just about being right. It's about wanting what's best for the team, the project, and the business. When poor decisions compromise efficiency or quality, it impacts everyone—including you—and that can be hard to watch. How to Handle These SituationsSo, how do you deal with these challenges in a constructive way? Let's break it down into a few actionable strategies:* Document Everything* When you share recommendations or raise concerns, make sure they're documented. Whether it's in an email, a meeting recap, or project documentation, write down what you suggested, why you suggested it, and the potential risks of ignoring it. This not only protects you but also provides a reference point if issues arise later.* Stay Professional, Not Emotional* It's easy to get frustrated or feel like giving up, but staying calm and professional is key. Focus on presenting your points logically and factually, without letting emotions take over. Remember, the goal is to improve outcomes, not to “win” an argument.* Collaborate and Build Relationships* Sometimes, resistance comes from a lack of trust or understanding. Take the time to build relationships with your team members, especially those who are resistant to your inputs. Have one-on-one conversations to understand their perspectives and find common ground. Over time, this can lead to more collaborative and respectful dynamics.* Pick Your Battles* Not every issue is worth fighting over. Learn to prioritize which battles are most important to the success of the project or the team. For smaller issues, it might be better to let others take ownership of their decisions—even if you disagree—so you can save your energy for the bigger challenges.* Escalate Constructively* If resistance becomes a recurring issue that impacts the team's efficiency or deliverables, don't be afraid to escalate the situation to leadership. Frame the escalation as an opportunity for process improvement rather than as a complaint about specific individuals. For example, suggest creating a more collaborative decision-making process that involves all stakeholders upfront.* Let Consequences Speak for Themselves* In some cases, the best way to address resistance is to let others experience the consequences of their decisions. If their approach leads to delays, inefficiencies, or bugs, use that as a learning opportunity to demonstrate the value of your recommendations. Over time, this can help shift perspectives.* Protect Your Energy* At the end of the day, you can't fix everything or force others to see things your way. Focus on doing your part—sharing your insights, providing logical recommendations, and documenting your efforts—and let go of outcomes you can't control. Protect your energy by recognizing what's within your influence and what isn't.Why Do People Behave This Way?Let's step back and consider the underlying reasons why people might resist your expertise:* Insecurity* They might feel threatened by your knowledge or fear losing control of the situation. This often manifests as resistance to input, even when it's logical.* Fear of Change* People often prefer to stick with what's familiar, even if it's less efficient. Change can feel risky, and some individuals may be unwilling to take that risk.* Miscommunication* Sometimes, resistance stems from a misunderstanding of what you're suggesting. Taking the time to clarify your points and address concerns can help reduce pushback. These challenges are not unique to you—they're something many professionals face in collaborative environments. The key is to focus on what you can control: your professionalism, your communication, and your ability to document and escalate when necessary.Remember, your goal isn't to "win" every debate—it's to contribute to the team's success while maintaining your own peace of mind. By approaching these situations with patience, professionalism, and a focus on collaboration, you can continue to excel in your role while minimizing frustration. That is all for this week. Lets dive into todays topic. Decoding the H1-B Visa Journey: What You Need to Know Before Moving to the U.S.1. Introduction* Today's episode is a reality check for IT professionals, especially from India, who are considering moving to the U.S. on an H1-B visa.* We'll discuss the challenges, misconceptions, financial struggles, and career growth aspects of working in the U.S. on an H1-B visa.* The aim is to provide you with clarity and help you avoid common mistakes made by professionals who moved to the U.S. without sufficient planning.* Let's break it all down.2. The Recent Trend: H1-B Visa Moves (2022–2024)* Over the last few years, especially from 2022 to 2024, there's been a surge in Indian IT professionals coming to the U.S. on H1-B visas.* Many are making this move without doing proper research or understanding what the move entails.* Common outcomes:* Struggling with low wages that don't match the high cost of living.* Living paycheck to paycheck, especially for families.* Returning to India after failing to find jobs or financial stability.* This trend has been accelerating since 2016 as job markets have tightened and companies have introduced restrictions on hiring H1-B professionals.3. What is the H1-B Visa and What it's not* Let's start with the basics: The H1-B visa is a temporary non-immigrant work visa.* It allows U.S. employers to hire foreign professionals in specialty occupations like IT, engineering, finance, etc.* It's crucial to understand that:* The H1-B visa is not a path to permanent residency or citizenship.* Extensions like PERM, I-140, or green card applications are employer-dependent and do not guarantee a permanent stay in the U.S.* The primary purpose of the H1-B visa is to fulfill specific job roles for a fixed period.Mindset Shift:* The H1-B visa is a means to gain international work experience, niche skills, and exposure to a new market—not a guaranteed way to settle abroad.* Always treat it as a temporary work opportunity.4. The Temporary Nature of the H1-B Visa* The H1-B visa is initially granted for three years and can be extended for another three years. Beyond this, extensions require green card sponsorship or other legal pathways.* If your employment ends, you have only 60 days to find another job or leave the country.* It's critical to have a clear plan:* What will you do if your project ends or you lose your job?* Are you prepared to return to India or transition to another opportunity?* Mindset: The mindset you need to adopt: Treat the H1-B visa as a short-term opportunity to gain work experience, niche skills, and exposure to direct client interaction.* Plan for the possibility of returning to your home country once your work is complete or the visa duration ends. Come to the U.S. knowing that your stay may be limited and your focus should be on career growth during this time.5. Factors to Consider Before Moving to the U.S.* Before deciding to move to the U.S. on an H1-B visa, ask yourself these key questions:* What are your goals? Are you seeking international work exposure, higher earnings, or career advancement?* Are you prepared for the challenges, including financial constraints, cultural adjustments, and uncertainties?* How does this move fit into your long-term career plan?* Make a checklist of factors to evaluate:* Skills: Do you have in-demand skills for the U.S. job market?* Financial Readiness: Are you prepared to manage high living costs with the offered salary?* Family Considerations: Are you moving alone or with dependents? How will this impact your finances and lifestyle?* Reflect on how this move will help you grow in your career—both professionally and financially.6. Financial Realities: LCA Salaries and the Cost of Living in the U.S.* Many Indian employers sponsor H1-B visas but pay the minimum required LCA (Labor Condition Application) salary.* LCA salaries are often insufficient to cover the high cost of living in major U.S. cities.* Example: An $85,000 salary in Virginia might seem attractive, but with rents, healthcare, groceries, and other expenses, it's difficult to support a family.* Some counties in Virginia estimate the average household income required for a decent living is $153,000.* Housing Crisis: The U.S. has been experiencing a housing crisis, with skyrocketing rents and home prices.* Inflation Impact: Post-COVID, inflation has increased costs for essentials like groceries, cars, and healthcare.* Many families who moved to the U.S. in 2022–2024 are now struggling financially due to these factors.Personal Finance Tip:* Keep housing expenses at 30–40% of your income. If rents exceed this percentage, you may struggle to save.* For families with a single income, surviving on LCA salaries often leads to financial stress and limited savings.7. When is it Feasible to Move on an H1-B Visa?* Moving on an H1-B visa can still be feasible in certain scenarios:* If you're young, single, and looking for career growth.* If you're financially disciplined and aim to save aggressively—your savings potential in the U.S. could be 5x compared to India (varies by experience and lifestyle).* If your primary goal is to gain career skills and save aggressively.* Or your employer pay offer is meeting with median household income of a county where your job is. However, for families or those on LCA salaries, the financial strain can be significant.8. Basics of Personal Finance for H1-B Professionals* Let's break down some basic financial considerations:* If you're earning $80,000 annually, your rent should ideally be 30% of your income (~$2,000/month). Due to rising costs, it's often closer to 40%.* In major tech hubs, rents can exceed $2,400/month, leaving little room for savings or discretionary spending.* This financial imbalance is why many families on LCA salaries are living paycheck to paycheck or even returning to India.* Plan your finances carefully to avoid falling into this trap.9. Home Buying on an H1-B Visa: A Risky Decision* Many H1-B professionals consider buying a home in the U.S., but this comes with risks:* The H1-B visa is temporary—if you lose your job, you must leave the U.S. within 60 days.* Treat home buying as an investment, not a long-term settlement plan.* Don't fall into the “keeping up with the Joneses” mentality or FOMO (fear of missing out).* Renting vs. buying is a personal decision, but weigh the risks carefully.10. Tightening Job Market and H1-B Exclusions* Post-2016, many job descriptions now explicitly state they're not open to H1-B candidates.* Companies are increasingly stating job is not open for Visa Sponsorships or H1-B due to immigration law frequent changes. Many job descriptions explicitly state they are not open to H1-B visa holders.Example: You will see a lot of job emails as below, means its tighter to find job open for H1-B visa.Position: Datawarehouse engineerDuration: 12 MonthsRate: W2 or 1099Visa: USC/GC/H4-EAD* The tech job market has become incredibly competitive, and international professionals face additional barriers.* This makes it essential to have niche, in-demand skills to compete in the job market.11. Don't Hold Onto Stagnant Jobs* A common mistake H1-B professionals make is staying in the same job or skill set for years, just to maintain visa status.* The work you're doing may become outdated, making it harder to find a new job if you lose your current one.* Key Tip: Upskill regularly to stay relevant in the job market. Learn new technologies, pursue certifications, and adapt to industry trends.12. Switching Employers on an H1-B Visa* H1-B visa holders can change employers, but the process is complex.* Before making the move, assess the U.S. job market carefully.* If you find a job that aligns with your career growth and offers the right wages, go for it.* The U.S. tech market is still a valuable experience, but preparation is key.13. Key Advice for Aspiring H1-B Professionals* If you're considering moving abroad on an H1-B visa, here's my advice:* Do thorough research on work culture, wages, job market conditions, and cost of living.* Discuss the move with your family and plan every detail—don't rely on assumptions or outdated narratives.* Understand that this move is temporary and treat it as a career-growth opportunity rather than a permanent settlement plan.14. Closing Thoughts* Moving to the U.S. on an H1-B visa can be a valuable experience, but it requires careful planning and realistic expectations.* Many challenges can be avoided by understanding the financial, professional, and cultural aspects of the move.* The goal is to help you make an informed decision and avoid the struggles that many professionals have faced in recent years. That is all for this week. Todays episode is on current state of education, international students in the U.S., and the disconnect between universities, job markets, and the harsh realities faced by graduates.1. US universities urge international students to return to campus before Trump inaugurationhttps://www.cnn.com/2024/12/26/us/international-students-us-colleges-trump/index.html* Universities in the U.S. are urging their international students to return to the country before potential political changes occur, especially with the possibility of Donald Trump being sworn in again.* The fear stems from potential changes in immigration policies and visa rules that could impact students' ability to stay in the U.S.* This has created uncertainty among students and their families, as they are now worried about completing their education and securing jobs in the U.S.Read more on this story in above link. This was the Top News Story this week , which made headlines in national news. Very high level, this looks like because in 2016 trump restricted entry to U.S from few nations, so universities are taking caution to let their students return back to U.S before trump inauguration. This is not just about travel bans which may come up, there is a dark reality behind this news. 2. Record Numbers of International Students to US To understand why Universities are making this request. Check this link for actual facts about number of international students coming to U.S annually. https://opendoorsdata.org/annual-release/international-students/* In 2023/24, the total number of international students in the U.S. increased by 7% to a record high of 1,126,690 students.* The number of international students coming to the U.S. in 2023 has broken records, surpassing even pre-pandemic levels.* Universities have been offering more seats for postgraduate programs to international students, prioritizing revenue without factoring in the job market's ability to absorb these graduates.* This influx of students has led to oversaturation in some fields, particularly in technology and computer science.* Also Students moving here, International graduate students and students on OPT reached record highs. OPT: The number of international students who remained in the United States to gain practical work experience through Optional Practical Training (OPT) reached a record high of 242,782 students, an increase of 22% from the prior year.3. Disconnect Between Universities and Job Markets* Many universities are increasing enrollment in postgraduate programs, ignoring the availability of jobs in those fields.* Universities mainly focus on revenue by filling seats rather than on the actual job market conditions.* Students—both international and domestic—are graduating with high expectations of lucrative jobs that may not exist.* The gap between academic programs and industry needs is widening, leaving graduates frustrated and underpaid.4. U.S. Tech Job Market Reality* The U.S. tech job market has been volatile, with massive layoffs from companies like Google, Amazon, and Meta over the past year.* Entry-level positions in technology have become scarce, making it challenging for new graduates to secure employment.* Even when graduates find jobs, many are underpaid, earning as low as $35 per hour (~$70,000 per year).* In cities where tech jobs are concentrated—like San Francisco, Seattle, or New York—this pay is not sustainable due to the high cost of living, which often requires an income of $135,000 or more per year to live comfortably.5. Challenges for 2022 and 2023 Batches of Students* The 2022 batch of postgraduate students has started entering the job market in 2024, but many are struggling to find jobs six months into their Optional Practical Training (OPT) period.* The 2023 batch will face even greater challenges in 2025, as the tech job market continues to struggle with layoffs and economic uncertainty.* International students face additional challenges as they have limited time during their OPT period to secure employment, or they risk losing their legal status in the U.S.6. Salary Disparity and Cost of Living* Many jobs offered to international and domestic students in tech are paying far below market expectations.* Living expenses in major cities make it nearly impossible for graduates to save money or pay off student loans.* Students are increasingly questioning the return on investment (ROI) of U.S. higher education, given the low starting salaries compared to the high cost of education and living.7. Universities' Role in This Crisis* Universities are failing both international and domestic students by overselling the promise of well-paying jobs after graduation.* They are prioritizing their financial gain, enrolling record numbers of students, and not considering the long-term impact on students' careers.* U.S. universities have been criticized for not offering adequate support to international students, such as career counseling, job placement assistance, or realistic expectations about job prospects.* Domestic students, too, are suffering due to skyrocketing tuition costs and student loan debt, with no guarantee of securing jobs that allow them to pay off this debt.8. Shifting Trends in Education* More domestic students in the U.S. are opting out of traditional four-year college programs due to the high costs and poor job market outcomes.https://www.pbs.org/newshour/education/why-more-americans-are-skipping-college* Instead, they are enrolling in short-term skill-based programs, such as Google's six-month certifications, which are much more affordable and lead to well-paying jobs.https://grow.google/* Companies like Google and Microsoft are offering alternative pathways to employment that challenge the traditional education model, such as online courses, apprenticeships, and job-specific training.https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/training/* These programs provide students with practical skills in months rather than years, at a fraction of the cost of a traditional degree.9. The Outdated Narrative Around Education* The old belief that pursuing a postgraduate degree guarantees a high-paying job in a top-tier company no longer holds true in the U.S. job market.* Students are following outdated advice without considering the current realities, such as economic instability, a competitive job market, and rising living costs.* Many students are not researching job market trends, relying instead on the assumption that a U.S. degree will automatically lead to success.10. Future Challenges for 2025 and Beyond* The large number of students graduating in 2025 will likely overwhelm the job market further, especially in fields like computer science and data analytics.* Students need to start exploring alternative career paths, upskilling in niche areas, and networking early to improve their chances of employment.* International students must also prepare for uncertainties surrounding visa rules, OPT timelines, and job search challenges.11. Call to Action for Universities* Universities must align their academic offerings with job market demands, reducing oversaturation in popular fields like computer science.* They should offer more transparent data on career outcomes, helping students make informed decisions about their education.* Career counseling, internships, and partnerships with industry leaders should be mandatory to prepare students for the job market.* Universities should also advocate for policy changes that support international students, such as extended OPT timelines or simplified visa processes.12. Advice for Students and Families* Research the job market in your chosen field before committing to a degree program.* Consider the cost of living in the area where you plan to work after graduation and how much income you'll need to break even.* Look into alternative education paths like certifications, apprenticeships, and bootcamps that provide practical skills in a shorter time frame.* Network early, gain practical experience through internships, and focus on acquiring in-demand skills to improve employability.13. Closing Thoughts* The U.S. education system is facing a major crisis, with students graduating into a market that cannot meet their expectations or needs.* Universities need to prioritize students' futures over their own financial gain.* Students and families must make informed decisions, keeping the current economic and job market realities in mind.* It's time for a shift in how we view education and career preparation, moving away from outdated models and toward practical, skill-based learning. That is all for this week. For todays Episode i would like talk about different topic which is very personal to me. I'm your host, Sridhar Garikipati, and I'm a parent of a wonderful autistic child myself. Today, we're focusing on the critical first steps: * Getting a Autism diagnosis and * Starting therapies. This can feel overwhelming, so we're breaking it down into manageable steps. The Referral and the Waiting periodThe journey often begins with a concern. Maybe your child isn't meeting speech milestones, has repetitive behaviors, or struggles with social interactions. If you have any concerns, the first step is to talk to your pediatrician. They are your gateway to specialized care. Ask for a referral to a child developmental pediatrician or a developmental specialist who can conduct a formal autism evaluation. Now, here's the reality: wait times for these appointments can be long, sometimes several months. This is where proactive action is crucial. Don't just wait for the appointment your pediatrician sets up. Contact your insurance company immediately. Ask them for a list of in-network providers who can diagnose autism. This is important for coverage. Then, call each provider on the list. Ask about their current wait times. You might find significant differences. Calling your insurance back and asking them to find providers with the earliest availability can also be helpful. Be persistent and advocate for your child. Getting that initial diagnosis is the key to unlocking essential therapies.Preparing for the EvaluationWhile you're waiting for the appointment, start gathering information. The more information you can provide to the diagnostician, the better. Think about the specific behaviors and developmental differences you've observed.* Communication: Is your child's speech delayed? Do they use gestures? Do they understand instructions?* Social Interaction: Do they make eye contact? Do they engage with other children? Do they seem interested in social play?* Repetitive Behaviors: Do they have any repetitive movements like hand flapping or rocking? Are they fixated on specific objects or routines?* Sensory Sensitivities: Are they overly sensitive to sounds, lights, textures, or smells?Write everything down. You can even create a timeline of your child's development. This detailed information will be invaluable to the professionals. The Diagnosis and Insurance ApprovalOnce the evaluation is complete, you'll receive a formal diagnosis report. This report is essential for accessing services. Immediately send a copy to your insurance company. This is where things can sometimes get tricky. Insurance companies often require pre-authorization for therapies.Don't be afraid to call your insurance company regularly to check on the status of your authorization. Ask them specifically what therapies are covered based on the diagnostic report. This is important because the report might recommend specific therapies like Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy (OT), and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).Finding the Right TherapistsOnce you have insurance approval, it's time to find therapists. Again, your insurance company is your first resource. Ask for a list of in-network providers for each recommended therapy: Speech, OT, and ABA.Here are some important things to consider when choosing therapists:* Experience: Do they have experience working with young children with autism?* Location and Availability: Are they conveniently located? Do they offer home-based or center-based therapy? Do their hours work with your schedule?* Personality and Approach: Does the therapist connect well with your child? Do you feel comfortable with their approach? If your child is already in school, talk to their school district about available services. They might offer some therapies through the Individualized Education Program (IEP). It's also important to remember that finding the right fit for your child and family may take time. Don't be afraid to try different therapists until you find the best match.Let's recap the key steps:* Referral from your pediatrician.* Proactive contact with your insurance and providers to shorten wait times.* Thorough documentation of your child's development.* Obtaining the diagnosis report and submitting it to insurance.* Confirming insurance coverage for therapies and finding suitable therapists. This journey can be challenging, but you are not alone. There are countless resources and support networks available. Remember to be patient with yourself and your child. Celebrate every milestone, no matter how small. Early intervention is crucial, and by taking these steps, you're giving your child the best possible start.Thank you for joining. We hope this information has been helpful. We'll be back next week with more tips and resources for parents of autistic children. That is all for this week. Keeping up with the Joneses & Gender Equality in Sweden

Welcome to Sridhar's newsletter number # 42 & Podcast (Click Play button for Audio version of the Post). Appreciate you being here, so we can connect weekly on interesting topics. Add your email id here to get this directly to your inbox. Do subscribe over Apple Or Spotify podcast (Minimalist techie Or on Spotify ) or hear it over email you received through my subscription or on my website. This weekly newsletter is mostly about the article, books, videos etc. I read or watch or my views on different topics which revolves around my head during the week. Now, let us dive into this week's reads.1. Keeping up with the JonesesLets talk about keeping up with Joneses, This is most Often topic in most of homes. Every home this will be discussed. Last week, we talked about rice and it was more of rant. so this week instead of rant, i want to focus on solution talking more. Some one is having BMW or Audi car we are having Nissan Altima as example , they are living life with enjoyment or why dont we buy the same car or even higher range than that. Remember this type of discussion at your home, may be not car , some other possessions, this topic comes up way more and every time one struggles to explain their partner that we don't need keep up with Joneses. Or in some cases we will see that conversations goes into trap and one is buying high end car just because their colleague, friend, neighbors had it. Even it was not a need. So its either a stressful situation to explain to partner or one is getting into trap. Keeping it short, as many of us face, knows this situation. So lets talk how to deal with the situation. Dealing with the pressure to keep up with others lifestyles and financial choices can be challenging. Here are few suggestions to address the issue regarding possessions and home buying or home improvement topics where this comes up.Comparing PossessionsThe headline explains it. This is about when partner wants to have possessions like car like neighbors, gold, diamonds, backyard setup, sofa, tv, phones, the list goes on. To address such discussion,* Acknowledge Feelings: Acknowledge your partner feelings and let her know that it's okay to have aspirations. At the same time, express your contentment with what you have and that material possessions don't define your happiness.* Value-Based Decisions: Make financial decisions based on your shared values and long-term goals. Emphasize the importance of financial stability, saving for the future, and living within your means.* Define Success: Encourage each other to define success on your terms rather than comparing yourselves to others. Success can be measured in various ways, such as personal growth, experiences, and fulfilling relationships.* Communicate Financial Goals: Discuss your financial goals and priorities as a couple. Create a budget that aligns with your shared objectives and keeps your financial situation in mind.Home Buying/ Home Improvement ComparisonSecond most faced situation is home buying or home improvement comparison. Like someone else buying 1.5 Million home or $900K home and why we are not buying like them, One keeping their blind spots here without looking that their own family income is say less than $700K. Same applies to home improvement comparison, where one is looking for much bigger deck or pool in backyard etc. To address such discussion,* Educate About Financial Risks: If someone is planning to spend 50% of their income on a mortgage, discuss the potential financial risks of such a high debt-to-income ratio. Educate your partner about the importance of a manageable mortgage payment that allows for financial flexibility.* Set Clear Budgetary Limits: Determine a reasonable budget for your own home purchase, considering factors like your current income, expenses, and long-term financial goals. Stick to a budget that provides financial security and allows for savings.* Financial Planning: Work together to create a comprehensive financial plan. Include aspects like saving for emergencies, retirement, and other future goals. This will help provide a broader perspective on your financial well-being.* Prioritize Needs vs. Wants: Distinguish between needs and wants in the home-buying process. Focus on finding a home that meets your essential needs while being mindful of extravagant features that may not be necessary.* Avoid Overextending: Remind each other about the importance of not overextending financially to buy a home. Overspending on a house can lead to stress and financial strain in the long run.* Seek Professional Advice: Consider consulting a financial advisor or mortgage specialist to get personalized advice tailored to your financial situation.Overall, fostering open communication and understanding between you and your partner is essential. Focus on building a life that aligns with your values, financial capacities, and long-term aspirations rather than trying to match others' choices or lifestyles. Remember that each individual's financial journey is unique, and what matters most is achieving financial stability and contentment within your means.2. Gender Equality in SwedenI ran into a person from Sweden and had a conversation with him over a basketball court. We were discussing in USA day care costs, home rents, home prices etc. typical men discussion. While in the conversation, he mentioned that for near than 5 years he was stay at home dad. Read many articles , blogs earlier about stay at home dads but this was first time talking to someone who has done that role. We went into deep 2 hour discussion talking about stay at home dad, wife as a main bread winner in home, now both work in USA. I was amazed by the culture of their family by end of the conversation. I have understanding of India and US culture as i have stayed in these two countries. Read many Japan school system , that's another day topic, i love their school system. Sweden really amazed me. after a while, i talked to someone who is not from India or USA. That day i walked out with the conversation in my head, i know so little. There are still lot of cultures out there, so much of good to learn from different culture. So did some reading mainly short blogs , YouTube videos to learn about it more. For sure i need to spend more time, pick a book understand how their families have such culture. Yes, I read books for detailed information. As Books are the place where one can get deep detail information on any topic of interest. A article, YouTube video will easy go away after a period of time. So for sure, we will talk about this in next podcast when i will read books on Sweden Gender equality. So more to come. For now, from this week learnings. In Sweden, the concept of gender equality is deeply ingrained in society, including in matters of family and finances. Swedish culture promotes a balanced sharing of responsibilities between men and women, both in the household and in financial matters. Here are some key points about gender roles and financial responsibilities in Swedish families:* Gender Equality: Sweden is often recognized as one of the most gender-equal countries in the world. This extends to various aspects of life, including family dynamics and financial responsibilities.* Shared Responsibilities: Swedish couples typically share both household and financial responsibilities. It's common for both partners to contribute financially to the household, whether through earnings or other means.* Dual Income Households: The majority of Swedish households are dual income households, where both partners work and contribute to the family income. This reflects the commitment to gender equality and the belief that both partners should have equal opportunities to pursue careers and contribute economically.* Parental Leave: Sweden offers generous parental leave policies, allowing both mothers and fathers to take time off work to care for their children. This encourages shared parenting responsibilities from the early stages of a child's life. Parents in Sweden are entitled to a total of 480 days of parental leave per child. These 480 days are split into three parts: 90 days are designated for each parent, and the remaining 300 days can be shared between them.* Financial Decision-Making: Financial decisions are often made jointly, with both partners discussing and agreeing on major purchases, investments, and financial goals. This includes decisions about savings, investments, and major expenses like housing and education.* Financial Education: Swedish schools often emphasize financial education, teaching students about budgeting, saving, and making informed financial decisions. This contributes to a culture of financial responsibility among both men and women.* Legal Protections: Sweden has laws in place to protect gender equality, including regulations against gender-based discrimination in the workplace and financial matters.* Attitudes towards Gender Roles: Swedish society tends to have more progressive attitudes towards traditional gender roles. This means that men and women are encouraged to pursue their interests and careers based on their abilities and passions rather than predefined gender roles.* Changing Norms: While the majority of couples in Sweden share financial responsibilities equally, it's important to note that individual couples' arrangements may vary based on personal preferences and circumstances.Overall, in Sweden, men and women are both expected and encouraged to share financial responsibilities in their families. The emphasis on gender equality, combined with policies that support work-life balance and shared parenting, has contributed to a culture where both partners are active participants in both financial decision-making and household responsibilities. That is all for this week. Now, let us dive into this week's reads.Todays topic is a Rant, Lets understand the panic behavior's and control the same. Indians are buying Rice Bags in panic mode, this is causing rate hikes, unavailability of rice stock for many.In recent weeks, there has been a surge in panic buying of rice in India. This has led to a sharp rise in prices and shortages of the staple food in some parts of the country. There are a number of reasons for this panic buying. One is the ongoing war in Ukraine, which has disrupted global food supplies. Russia and Ukraine are major exporters of wheat and other grains, and the war has caused prices of these commodities to soar. This has raised concerns about food security in India, which is a major importer of wheat.Another reason for the panic buying is the recent heatwave in India. The heatwave has damaged crops and reduced yields, which has further raised concerns about food availability. The panic buying is also being driven by social media rumors and misinformation. Some people have been spreading rumors that there is a shortage of rice in India, which has led to even more people rushing to buy rice. The panic buying is having a number of negative consequences. It is driving up prices, making rice less affordable for many people. It is also leading to shortages, making it difficult for people to find rice to buy.The government has taken some steps to try to address the panic buying. It has increased imports of rice and wheat, and it has released stocks from government warehouses. However, these measures have not been enough to stop the panic buying. The government needs to take further steps to address the panic buying. It needs to provide accurate information about food availability and prices. It also needs to crack down on social media rumors and misinformation. If the government does not take action, the panic buying could lead to serious food shortages in India.I am concerned about the potential for price inflation due to panic buying. When demand for a product increases sharply, it can lead to shortages, which can then drive up prices. This is what we have seen with the recent panic buying of rice in India.Retailers are likely to be reluctant to bring prices down once the panic buying has subsided. This is because they have become accustomed to the higher prices and they are now making more profit. In addition, they may be worried that if they lower prices, they will lose customers to other retailers who are still charging higher prices. The government can play a role in preventing price inflation by taking steps to increase supply of the product in question. For example, in the case of rice, the government could import more rice or release stocks from government warehouses. The government can also crack down on hoarding and speculation, which can also drive up prices. In the long term, the best way to prevent price inflation is to address the underlying factors that are causing it. For example, in the case of rice, the government could invest in agricultural research and development to improve crop yields. The government could also provide subsidies to farmers to help them cope with the rising cost of inputs, such as fertilizer and fuel.It is important to remember that price inflation is not always a bad thing. In some cases, it can be a sign of economic growth. However, when price inflation is caused by panic buying or other factors, it can lead to hardship for consumers and businessOn the Friday afternoon, Noon time suddenly Costco store I was, too many Indians started showing up in Rice aisle. I felt shameful for sure. That was evidence of even educated people can get into panic buying for a number of reasons. Here are a few:* Fear of the unknown. When faced with a crisis or uncertainty, people may feel a sense of fear and anxiety. This can lead them to make impulsive decisions, such as panic buying.* Misinformation and rumors. In times of crisis, it is important to get your information from reliable sources. However, misinformation and rumors can spread quickly, especially on social media. This can lead people to believe that there is a shortage of essential goods, which can trigger panic buying.* Social pressure. When people see others panic buying, they may feel pressure to do the same. This is especially true if they are worried about not being able to find what they need later.* A sense of control. In a crisis, people may feel a loss of control. Panic buying can give people a sense of control, even if it is only temporary. It is important to remember that panic buying is a normal human response to crisis. However, it is important to try to resist the urge to panic buy. Panic buying can actually make the situation worse by creating shortages and driving up prices. Here are a few tips for avoiding panic buying:* Stay calm. It is important to stay calm and rational in times of crisis. Panicking will only make the situation worse.* Get your information from reliable sources. Don't rely on social media or rumors for information. Get your information from reliable sources, such as the government or news organizations.* Plan ahead. If you are worried about a shortage of essential goods, you can try to plan ahead. Make a list of the things you need and try to stock up on them before the crisis hits.* Help others. Instead of panic buying, you can help others by donating to food banks or other organizations that are helping people in need. That is all for this week. Now, let us dive into this week's reads.1. How to run team stand-ups effectivelyPersonally I run at least 3 stand-up calls per day. Most of the days they are good, but few days are not so great. Specially on not so great days, will end up reminding team in between call to remind them how to give their stand-up updates clearly or after end of the call when i feel that i could do better. Would refer to my OneNote document where i have few tips noted for time to time to read them quick. Yeah, its better to have your own self notes instead of searching online as they will be quick refresher and also allows me to edit the same for any updates. So this week sharing some tips for running effective team stand-ups.* Set a clear agenda and stick to it. This will help keep the meeting focused and on track. The most basic agenda which you can have team follow their updates in this format. * What did I work on yesterday?* What am I working on today?* What issues are blocking me?* Encourage participation from all team members. This will help ensure that everyone feels heard and that important issues are addressed.* Keep the meeting short and to the point. Stand-ups are meant to be quick check-ins, so try to keep the meeting to 15 minutes or less.* Encourage team members to share their progress, challenges, and any blockers they may be facing. This will help the team stay informed and identify areas where they can help each other.* Follow up on any action items or issues that were brought up in the stand-up. This will help ensure that progress is being made and that the team is moving forward.* Keep it informal and use a flexible format that works for your team, such as remote or hybrid.* Be flexible and adaptable. Be open to feedback and adjust the format or structure of the meeting as needed to best meet the needs of your team.* To keep everyone engaged if you are literally standing in a room, then play a catch. toss the ball for someone to catch it, so they can give their update. Skip giving to the person next to or who has already given their update. This something i have done only once in my career. As mostly I had folks remote in my teams, I randomly call person name to let them give their update instead of going in any chronological order. If your team's stand-up meetings are running longer than expected, here are a few things you can try:* Remind team members to keep their updates brief and to the point. Encourage them to focus on the most important information and to skip over any details that are not relevant to the rest of the team.* Set a time limit for the meeting and stick to it. This will help ensure that the meeting stays on track and that everyone has enough time to complete their work.* Encourage team members to come prepared with their updates. This will help reduce the time it takes for them to gather their thoughts and present their information.* Consider breaking the meeting up into smaller groups or sub-teams. This will allow each group to focus on specific tasks and will reduce the time it takes to go through updates from every team member.* Encourage team members to address any issues or blockers during the stand-up and to schedule follow-up meetings if necessary.* Set specific time for each agenda items and stick to it.* Keep the focus on progress, not problems. Encourage team members to share what they've accomplished since the last meeting, not just what they're currently working on.* Assign a facilitator who can keep the meeting on track and remind team members to stick to the agenda and the time limit.Let me know in comment, what are your best tips to facilitate effective team stand-ups.2. Team members taking leaves is causing delays in your project ?If team members taking leaves is causing delays in your project? Most of us face this issue and now that many of my age group are mid level or senior level managers wanted to talk about this. Here are a few things you can do:* Develop a detailed project plan that includes backup plans and contingencies for when team members are absent. This will help ensure that the project can continue to move forward even when team members are away.* Develop a cross-training program to ensure that team members can step in and take on the responsibilities of absent team members. This will help ensure that the project is not impacted by the absence of a single team member.* Communicate clearly with the team members who are taking leaves, their manager and the project team. Encourage them to provide clear handover instructions before they leave and to make sure that their absence will not cause delays in the project.* Use tools like project management software or task management tools to keep track of progress and make sure that deadlines are met.* Keep open communication with the customer or stakeholders, update them about the situation and come up with a plan that works for everyone.* Consider hiring temporary staff or contractors to fill in for absent team members.* Review your leave policy and make adjustments as needed to ensure that it is fair and that it allows team members to take the time off they need while minimizing the impact on the project.* Be flexible, and be willing to adjust the project plan and schedule as needed to accommodate for the leavesIf one team member is taking a lot of leave and it is impacting the schedule of the project, follow above all things and have specific to have one on one discussion.* Communicate clearly with the team member about the impact their leaves are having on the project schedule. Encourage them to provide clear handover instructions before they leave and to make sure that their absence will not cause delays in the project.* Develop a detailed project plan that includes backup plans and contingencies for when this team member is absent. This will help ensure that the project can continue to move forward even when the team member is away.* Develop a cross-training program for this team member's responsibilities, and ensure that other team members are able to step in and take on their responsibilities while they are absent.* Keep open communication with the customer or stakeholders and update them about the situation and come up with a plan that works for everyone.* Review the leave policy and talk to the team member about their absence and how it can be managed better.* Consider hiring temporary staff or contractors to fill in for the absent team member.* Have an open and honest conversation with the team member and try to understand the reason for their leaves, if there is an underlying issue, try to address that. It's important to address the issue and come up with a plan that works for everyone and minimize the impact on the project schedule as much as possible. Remember to be empathetic and understanding of the team member's situation while also ensuring that the project stays on track. That is all for this week. FY 2023 Consumer Impact, Be Resilient for your New Year Resolution

Add your email id here to get this directly to your inbox.Do subscribe over Apple Or Spotify podcast (Minimalist techie Or on Spotify ) or hear it over email you received through my subscription or on my website. This weekly newsletter is mostly about the article, books, videos etc. I read or watch or my views on different topics which revolves around my head during the week. Now, let us dive into this week's reads.1. Retail giants vs Suppliers - Impact to End ConsumerRetail giants are taking a hard line with suppliers, pushing back on price raises that have become commonplace in the industry. Walmart is leading the way; last month its CEO told Sam's Club suppliers he would fight attempts to pass price hikes onto retailers, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing anonymous sources. Walmart has previously issued tough edicts to suppliers, threatening not to stock their products over price hikes. Chains like Target and Amazon have made similar moves, asking suppliers for discounts — as a tight labor market, high inflation and an inventory glut weigh on suppliers and retailers. That is really a conundrum when the buyer has so much power/clout. Seller's wallet share of Walmart purchase is in low single digit to very best mid double digit. So in my view its more of walmart's buying power vs. supplier's ability to price appropriately. This is just an observation but how do we counter such a push from walmart is altogether a different question and conundrum to me - Accept it as market structure/market constraints or plan taking the above push from Walmart as given variable in business planning.Consumers are 70% of the US economy. Consumer goods channels are now seeing: the “fastest boomerang (power) back to customers ever seen”. Most of the remaining B2B economy will follow. Retail is always a tough business but it's especially tough in an economic downturn. Walmart, Amazon and Target are all working to push more of the downward margin pressure back on their suppliers."Large retailers are canceling orders, resisting price increases and in some cases asking suppliers to provide discounts. This puts pressure on product makers that are struggling to adapt to shifting consumer demand."While it wasn't a macro economic event we saw that same thing happening during the initial phases of the trade war with China. Manufacturers got squeezed by their retail customers and were able to muddle through by pushing back on their suppliers in turn, and in some cases cutting into what little product margin they had.So far this has felt similar, but with the added pressure of an anticipated slowdown in consumer demand. I expect this Q4 and next year to be tough, and for manufacturer's to have to work especially hard to maintain a profitable and sustainable business.2. Be Resilient for your New Year ResolutionFew Notes from the book “ The Difference ”, Specially the topic of increasing your Resilience Quotient hit a note, which I thought of sharing with the group, specially near year resolutions on the way. This short list is going to help you increase your resilience quotient to keep your new year goal and meet. * Ask yourself one question, Do i have to change or does someone else have to change for me to succeed at my goal ?* Do Something. It may be wrong thing, but it is okay, you will do something else latter. Take small actionable steps towards your goal* Take a Break. This is opposite of #2. If you are working on something which is not going anywhere, Take a break. Rest to get your focus back.* Find a Cheerleader. When you share your goal with others, their is 50% chance of success. You are not looking for someone who can push the same mountain as you are pushing. You are looking for someone who can believe in you and keep a check on you every few months about your journey.* Emphasize the Positive. Be Optimistic. Recognize the good stuff that happens to you each day.* Be Realistic toward your goal.* Silence your Internal Critics. This is our own harsh internal radio that keeps on playing in our head about negativity over and over again and makes it difficult to reach our goals. Don't let it push you, rather listen to it, listen to all the Questions its raising. From your last one week of work, Look for one good achievement or work which you have done toward your goal. Come up with one good reason , a solid reason which can allow your brain to overcome those internal critics off, so which can remind your #1, why you are doing this. * Get Rid of Distractions. This is E-Mail, TV watching, Chatting, Social media mindless browsing, Internet. Get rid of distractions so you have your focus towards your goal. Be Resilient. That is all for this week. Now, let us dive into this week’s reads.1. U.S Housing MarketThere is huge shortage of homes in USA, This is very much known since more than 2 years now. Current U.S Market is so tight, that house listed on the market is closed in less than a week. In my area, seen few of the home sold on 2nd day of their Listing becoming active. So any prospective buyer, specially first time home buyers are left out of this race. This resulted home prices way beyond on their year on year growth. Prices are so high, but still many are going ahead and buying them at premium prices. At stock market as many say, Paying high price for something now and assuming it will go high further without any data points is a speculation. Home Prices currently are in same boat.Other end, iBuyer concept ended up another hole in this process. iBuyer are organizations like Zillow, Redfin, Opendoor, who buy the houses from the market, flip them and then sell for profit. Zillow in recent days declared that it got the business wrong and its no longer revenue generating for them, as they bought so many home since last 2 years and now they are not able to sell the homes with a margin enough to run the business. Overall, housing market inventory issue is not getting resolved even in 2022 as projected by many economists. One has to make their life’s biggest investment within a week and in hot areas on the spot or less than a day. Zillow coming out of the business is a sign for buyers not to panic and go into buying now ? Let me know your thoughts.https://www.forbes.com/advisor/mortgages/housing-bubble-experts/ 2. Surgeon General warns of mental health 'epidemic' for kidsU.S Surgeon from State of Union, General Vivek Murthy has released a advisory in December of 2021 about the mental health epidemic for kids. 1 out 5 kids suffer depression and 1 out of 4 kids suffer anxiety, Year by year depression, hopelessness, suicide rates have been going up, Covid has added additional spike to it now. You can see the full advisory in below link,Protecting Youth Mental Health The U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory To add to fuel, Social media, Pop Culture bombard young kids with their media content, telling them they are not good looking enough, popular enough, smart enough or rich enough. To take Action,All have to recognize that mental health is an essential part of overall health. Mental health conditions are real, common, and treatable, and people experiencing mental health challenges deserve support, compassion, and care, not stigma and shame. Mental health is no less important than physical health. And that must be reflected in our how we communicate about and prioritize mental health.Ensure that every child has access to high-quality, affordable, and culturally competent mental health care. Care should be tailored to children’s developmental stages and health needs, and available in primary care practices, schools, and other community-based settings. In regular day to day living as well, every child should have quality access to childcare, education, Healthy food, health care, stable housing, be in safe neighborhoods. Its call for action for every adult there, to have this better future for every kid. For more insights, Do read the Advisory for sure. 3. Labor Shortage continues to 2022 as wellIn 2021, the biggest buzz word over LinkedIn and over all workplaces was “The Great Resignation”. Pandemic has changed a wave against the employer by employees. The way number of people have quit jobs or not ready to join back or come back to offices, Quitting even without an job offer to get out of toxic work culture, you name it, Resignations were everywhere in 2021. The trend is going to continue in 2022 as well, it will be a job seeker market. In 2021, it was majorly for tech jobs, science, medical professional got the high paychecks for switching employers, as we move into 2022, this trend will go into other sectors as well, Food Industry is my top list and so does the minimum pay jobs will end up following Amazon , Walmart route, that is increasing pay for entry level or minimum pay jobs , paying for education and additional bonuses to have employees on their side. Labor market is still tight, the reason for my choice of food industry was, Covid is going stay here, people who were fired during 2020 lockdown or were working 80 hours a week with minimal staff were highly burned out. So these jobs for sure no longer seen as secured jobs. So Food Industry if needs to survive in 2022, they have no option, so have to run the tide along with the job seeker. Higher Pay, Joining Bonuses, Promotions, 40hrs a week schedules, Diversity Equity and Inclusion, Higher Education support from employer, Health insurance all would need to have their staff size back to pre-pandemic level. In US altogether a different problem, There are plenty of jobs on the market, but not many are looking to come back to workforce. Many who lost their jobs due to Covid Lockdown were either lived on their life savings or government given unemployment checks. During this non-working time, many realized how much their life is spent in work , which impacted their health, stress level, no work life balance jobs all these came to limelight to them. So many are not looking to join same jobs which they left in 2021. So people are adding additional skills to look for job opportunity in different sectors than compared to sector they worked prior to Pandemic. So there will be businesses who will find very hard to find their new employees. Also 2021 has more deaths due to Covid compared to 2020, So many had Covid or taking care of their loved one with Covid or child care by being at home and older population who got retired early also adds up. See this Washington Post article specially for US job market, https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2021/12/29/job-market-2021/That is all for this week. Now, let us dive into this week’s reads.1. Facebook whistles blower - Frances HaugenFirst week of October 2021, Frances Haugen has given series of interviews. She is former Facebook employee who has shared or leaked the documents which majorly highlighted the negative impact of social media and Instagram in particular which has been impacting 1 out 3 teen girls in U.S and across the world. With the information she has shared, public, law makers should go in deep and analyze the data points so proper regulation can put in place. She is coming into limelight, will actually help other employees to come forward and share the dark secrets which are known already but hidden from public eye and law makers.Drug Cartels and Human Trafficker use these platforms openlyTeen Girls and Boys both mental health is impacted. 1 out of 3 is really a scary number for next generation and it should worry ever one of us.See more here, 2. Big Tech and Their Employees RallyApple employees have launched a campaign against their organization decision for return to the office.Dave Chapelle’s “The Closer” show has brought group of Netflix employees calling themselves Team Trans, they have scheduled a rally outside their officeEvery time I read an article or view any news about big tech and their employees’ submitting memos, forming groups and going into rallies. The first thing comes to my mind is, how the hell they are getting time in their 8-5 to spend this much amount of their energy on these things. One end being working remote, I hardly getup once or twice in my 8-hour worktime. Seriously need to know how their daily job routine is.I’m not against these asks at all, as coming to remote working, I’m all in for it. Organizations who have worked so well in last 18 months being remote, making a decision to call their employees back is ridiculous. It’s like treating in 2021 as well as 1950’s factory era and expecting everyone to be in office.Coming to any streaming giants shows which are hurtful etc. My view is, they are so many options to stream, if you don’t like it, then don’t watch it. Move on, there are infinite number of shows on streaming platforms. Why would one spend their time, knowing the content is not their likeable content and spend their time and then their energy to talk how bad it is, or they got offended. Seriously, just switch the channel.Leaving this aside, let’s talk the real issue here. doesn’t matter which topic it is, there is a disconnect between employee and employer. All this Covid time, many companies have internally and externally released to press, that they are spending good amount for employee wellbeing. If companies are really committed for employee wellbeing, then why this type of rallies are happening across many companies in the world. Problem is, however fairy tale is painted, Actually its always numbers or Companies client takes higher priority over their own employees who help them building their products. This is where many companies fail. Companies who center their communication with employees around belongingness and humanity are the one who doesn’t run in this issues. What are your thoughts?3. Dying to Lead ? Reaching top in Career Impacts HealthThe topic of burnout is most trending topic since we all began working remote since last 18 months. Many of us have played multiple roles at home while working for the role which pays your salary. People have gone way beyond pushing the boundaries to meet their daily work goal, Sprint Goals, Monthly releases etc. Doesn’t matter if you are CEO or a subordinate employee every one of us have faced burnout or wearing burnout as achievement shield. if this, is you, who is dying to work, dying to lead, dying to reach top in your career, then do read below study published in Harvard Business School.Click Below,https://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/dying-to-lead-how-reaching-the-top-can-kill-you-sooner?utm_source=SilverpopMailing&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Daily%20Gazette%2020211004-1%20(1)&utm_content=1633357493Study shows that stress caused by chasing success at work can shorten one’s professional life.It also Impacts every employee at lower level. As Employee performance evaluated in 360 reviews, Quarterly and semiannually and yearly annual reviews. Even in the name of Annual reviews, Leadership team always looks at their workers with an eye on productivity. So, wellbeing of an employee and employer both depends on firm everyday performance.Researchers in prior studies attributed shorter life expectancies among lower-level civil servants, who tended to die at younger ages than their bosses, to the psychological stress of working in subordinate positions. Recent study flips it, turns out top managers might face more health problems.Recent studies of business environments have found that executive positions take a toll on the health of top managers, often causing cardiovascular and immune-system illnesses."Higher Ranked Employees were more susceptible to a shorter lifespan”In the workplace, it is very important to say NO. As you should be very clear of your day-to-day routine and your responsibilities, Saying No to additional responsibilities and additional remuneration will help in avoid burnout. To say it simple, Money can't buy health and a loving family. That is all for this week. See you again.Do let me know in comments or reply me over email to share what is your view on this post. Podcast - Self Care

Few Notes on Above Image,Usage of Mobile, Laptop, Tablet, TV, Smart watches etc. are fine. There are of concern only when used excessively. Same goes for others in the list. Do a one week of detox from all those and see how different it makes us. We as generation are looking more into Screens compared to nature or surroundings. Every one of us, holds stressors. Identifying those and reducing those stressors are much needed for peaceful life. Sometimes, there are few stresses which are hard to avoid. That is fine, it might be target you are reaching out at work or something at home you are concerned about. In all these cases, do add Self Care to daily regime, so we will be mentally resilient in those stressful situations. Here are few which we can do for our self-care,First thing, do craft some time daily into your schedule for Physical exerciseGym membership is there or not, Your Home is your gym, your backyard is your gym, your parking lot is your gym. Name it, you can make your surroundings as Gym.Hike, it started as sightseeing activity for me in April 2013. There were few and in some cases none in my circle, who were interested in hikes. So, I have joined many meetups, signed up for Couch to 5k Run in nearby church, joined the elder group who were doing Alzheimer's walks in my town. Hiking long trails, mountains have become my summer habit since then. For sure I had many wonderful conversations face to face without any distractions during hikes.Runs, Long Walks - If you can run long, then for sure running is best way to clear the mind. if not, high intensity runs are one choice. Run as fast as you can for a minute and then do 2-minute slow walk, repeat the cycle. High Intensity run or walk are my choice as they keep mind clear.Cold showers do not remember from which article or book I picked this up as a new habit. For sure first week of February 2018 when I started this with snowstorm outside, it sucked. But once it became a regular habit, mornings were never the same there after.Food, I am not a doctor so will not recommend anything specific. I tried vegan on March 22, 2015 and lasted for 3 months and then switched to vegetarian diet. I will only say this, food is fuel to our body. As for car how one chooses premium gas or oil service, we should treat food as well same. Do your review properly and choose the healthy foods as it suits you. American statistics says that 60% of person daily intake is ultra-processed food. I would say cooking is easiest for survival part, I am not saying for master chef side. Basic cooking recipes for all three meals are very easy until one tries it. Gain knowledge on food, it will help for long run (My wife is master in this knowledge). Pharmaceuticals are for help who really needs it, for rest who are not in need. What we feed ourselves is our duty to maintain body is getting right fuel and stay healthy.Example, for me I have introduced Salmon into my diet after reading its benefits. I am back to Non-Vegetarian as Salmon is part of my diet now. Everyone’s choice is different, so make sure your choice is right. Do not have to stick any style, create your own menu.Sleep - It shows on your body, so you know it better than anyone else. so, sleep well. I do recommend Why we Sleep book, give it a try if your library has it or try trial version for free of Audible, it will give you in depth information on this topic and why this generation really needs sleep and its awareness. Efficacy Rate, Underperformer in team, T.D Jakes - Don’t Drop the Mic, Amplifying Voice in Organizations

Do subscribe over Apple Or Spotify podcast (Minimalist techie Or on Spotify ) or hear it over email you received through my subscription (https://sridhargarikipati.substack.com) or on my website. This weekly newsletter is mostly about the article, books, videos etc. I read or watch or my views on different topics which revolves around my head during the week. Now, let us dive into this week’s reads.1. Efficacy Rate of VaccinesEfficacy rate of different types of Covid-19 vaccines are getting discussed a lot these days. In Countries where more than one option is available, people are looking at efficacy rate of each vaccine and deciding simply based on percentages (95%, 94%, 84%, 75% etc.) which is best among these. Without knowing the right information, this comparison is being done and people are delaying their vaccine shot expecting to get their choice of vaccine to be given to them. Efficacy is an ability to produce a desired or intended result. So how exactly this has been calculated? Efficacy is calculated by vaccinating list of people and after 14 days they are left in real-world conditions and monitored how many can get infected by virus. i.e., Say if 10 people are given a vaccine, and out of these in real world conditions only 1 person got infected with the virus, so Efficacy rate is 90%. Before one compare all the vaccines, they all need to subject to same conditions, which is not true. As each of these vaccinations are being developed in different countries and their clinical trials have occurred on different time of the year and around those time, the Virus wave in each country is different, so it is not valid to compare the efficacy rate. If anyone needs to compare, it would be after taking the vaccine which one keeps them away from hospitalization and death. Here is the link to know the details, rather than just assuming the details based on Efficacy percentage.https://www.yalemedicine.org/news/covid-19-vaccine-comparison2. Underperformer in Team and while remoteWe all have been working remote now more than a year and still many more months we will be remote till major population get vaccinated, however we get back to normal, the remote culture is going stay here for greater long term. So, learning leadership skills while being remote is a key thing which I always look out to learn. So, talking about one common point which many teams face. i.e., Underperformer in a team, especially when all team members are working remote. How do you tackle such situation? Very Ideal issue would be insufficient skills, lack of initiative, commitment, and poor attitude. But being working remote has made every one of us to look with another pair of eyes, so it is not easy to say these things without knowing the full picture. Let us see, what approach we should take in this case. Check what is different for the resource as creating now underperforming. Is it work, new work, skills, personal issue? Listen to your resource. Once you hear them, ask them what change they would do or expecting from you. What are our learnings from the discussions, action item can be on either of you? This is what learnt from one leader or observing one micro manager. Never tell Exactly what to do, how to do, Intention is to leave their work and their work ownership with them only.Give them all the information needed, ensure to have check ins with them. Let them know that you are ready for help and entire team as well. Every person in the team should rely on each other as its Teams work. Ensure each person is reaching out when lagging. For the last part, I want to highlight here TEAM. Yes, teams can help their teammates a best. Most often I have seen a resource fallen off the radar is when his own team disowns him. When team supports the underperforming resource, they make him/her inclusive in every group discussion, issue discussion or help the resource in understanding his work more and help in completing deliverables. It is easier to thrive when team support is there, and team doesn’t allow any of their team member to fail.Do share in comments what you would do.3. T.D Jakes - Don’t Drop the MicT.D. Jakes shares how he discovered the power of a platform and audience, A person with a Mic has so much power in this world. He takes an example of great orators of history and how they have changed history through their communication. What wonderful about the talk was, he talked not just about stage communication, rather a communication across all stages of life. Here are key things which struck with me,“Your future is never predicated on what you lost. It is predicated on what you have left.”“Don't drop the mic, because destiny is in front of you, and history is behind you. And why would you live in your history when you can excel in your destiny? Don’t run away from the person , rather run into them, listen to them, hear well, Don’t try to fix the person. Most of the people stick to average or normal life, why only few takes such an exceptional journey of their life. Every one of us has a greater potential to get full filled in the life. For me, writing, reading is an extension from my daily job. why to care even if someone like this or even reads it, always do what you intend to do. There will be many saying what you are doing is not great or can be great, take the feedback which will improve your work, ignore the rest. Listen to this interview, I ended up taking notes throughout the podcast as for sure it has many powerful quotes in an hour. Worth your time.4. Amplifying Voice in OrganizationsIn many in-person team meetings or now Online Audio/Video conference meetings, you will always find a silent listener or a person who shares their point of view or feedback etc. but it’s not heard at all. We talked about this in our Diversity and Inclusion post earlier as well, every team member should feel the environment is safe enough to share their responses as well when in team discussions. No one should be afraid to speak up because of hierarchy or fear how one would understand and impact their career. It is very important that every meeting participant points are taken well, should not be overheard. See the below link, where research also calling out to amplify your peer voice in such cases. if you notice in your meetings that your peer or cross team member who ever it is, if a participant ideas are overlooked, step in and amplify on their behalf to the group. We see this problem a lot, where specially meeting organizer or people with strong viewpoints tries to steal the show. In such cases amplify others voices to get them heard, this will also make you look good. Doing this you will be earning respect in other person eyes. Also, team gets to hear different ideas/solutions, so best one is selected. This will help you and your team, so please do so.
