Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are ringing in the New Year with a new podcast. This time they're celebrating the 85th anniversary of His Girl Friday. His Girl Friday is a screwball comedy directed by Howard Hawks. It is the second film adaptation of the play The Front Page. It opened in theaters on January 18, 1940. In the film, Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell), former star reporter of The Morning Post, arrives at the paper to tell her former editor and ex-husband Walter Burns (Cary Grant) she's engaged to marry her fiancé Bruce Baldwin (Ralph Bellamy). Walter asks Hildy to help stop the execution of a condemned man, Earl Williams (John Qualen), before she leaves. However, Walter's motives are less than noble, and the story is more trouble than previously expected. His Girl Friday is a seminal film in the screwball comedy genre, notable for its biting wit and rapid-fire, overlapping dialogue. In 1993, it was selected for the Library of Congress' National Film Registry, for films that are “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”  The film and the play it's based on are in the public domain. The entire movie can be watched in high definition on Wikipedia. Aaron talks about seeing His Girl Friday in college before he and Josh go over the movie's plot, performances, humor, and legacy. Aaron also recommends more Cary Grant movies to Josh and listeners. For more classic films, you can listen to Josh and Aaron's podcasts on Singin' in the Rain and A Hard Day's Night.  His Girl Friday is streaming on Tubi and Pluto TV

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 6, 2024 4:15

In the last twenty-five years, ghost hunting has entered something of a golden age, with all sorts of technology playing its part and filling up an investigators kit bag. Cameras, EMF metres, InfraRed thermometers and spirit boxes all help to carve a science out of a difficult premise, with differing levels of credibility. In the early 1800s, things were a little bit different. It was a simpler time. All you needed back then was a stiff drink, or maybe two, and a loaded revolver, because as we all know, if you want to catch a ghost, you need to shoot it first. All well and good, provided the ghost you shoot isn't just a man in his work overalls. SOURCES Old Bailey Proceedings Online (1804) Trial of FRANCIS SMITH (t18040111-79).

Din förtjusning i Napoleon. Jag minns dina ord, när ryktena spreds om ett incestiuöst förhållande med din halvsyster: ”When justice is done to me, it will be when this hand that writes is as cold as the hearts which have stung me”.Detta det så kallade Byronmysteriet, du må tror att det har debatterats. I känslolivets bergochdalbanefärder sitter du bredvid. The Druce-Portland Affair: The Duke That Never Was

Cases of stolen, mistaken and fraudulent identity were not an entirely uncommon thing in Victorian Britain. Somewhat more unusual was the bizarre allegation that an English aristocrat, the 5th Duke of Portland, had lived a double life and eventually faked his own death in order to escape the web of lies he had concocted over the years. It all sounded very far-fetched, but when interested parties attempted to bring the case to court, they found themselves cut off by shadowy powers that led to some deciding that the whole affair was akin to a mysterious conspiracy. In truth, it very well may have been, but perhaps not for the reasons the prosecutors originally claimed. SOURCES Eatwell, Piu Marie (2014) The Dead Duke, His Secret Wife & The Missing Corpse. Before she settles down to life of homemaking, security, and insurance policies with Bruce Baldwin in Albany, star reporter Hildy Johnson has one more story to write for her ex-husband and ex-boss Walter Burns, editor of the Morning Post. Hildy must write up an interview with convicted killer Earl Williams that will grant him a last-minute reprieve on the basis of insanity. The ingenious angle she finds to prove he's insane: Earl listened to so many soapbox speeches in the park about the socialist concept of “production for use” that when a gun was placed into his hands, he had to shoot it. Howard Hawks's 1940 film His Girl Friday knits together two plots from two very different genres. One is a romantic comedy that intends to reunite its main couple in something like wedded bliss. The other is a dark drama of murder and corruption, complete with a gallows lurking just outside the window and a suicide attempt that takes place on screen. Yet Earl Williams and Hildy Johnson's fates in their respective plots are twinned. Both are, in a sense, looking for their own reprieves. And Hildy has her own production-for-use dilemma. What was she made for—the life of a newspaperman, or the life of a housewife? To what kinds of production should we devote our own lives? What are we made for—risk and adventure or security and insurance? Wes & Erin discuss. The annals of late Victorian era crime are usually dominated by one name, but another series of murders, ones lesser-known but more grisly, took place from 1886-1889 with some outlying cases that may or may not have been connected. Were these murders all the work of the same offender? In some cases, were they even murders at all? No final de 1897, ele escreveu seu primeiro livro, The Story of the Malakand Field Force. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/malhete-podcast/message

This is a case where the truth is stranger than fiction…or at least more disturbing.  The articles I've read about the legend of the witch tree made it seem like the Storm Demon was this little itty bitty tornado that swept through Louisville destroying one neighborhood and all was well…but all of the articles about the Witch Tree left out that this tornado was part of a mass casualty event with hundreds dead.  So, without further ado let's hear the legend as it's typically told and then learn the horrifying truths of what really transpired.       On the corner of Sixth and Park, in Louisville, Kentucky, stood a large, tall maple; straight as a pole.  It had been there for centuries and provided shade to the citizens of Louisville by day…but by night, below its leafy crown that stretched upwards towards the stars, witches would gather to cast their spells and worship their old gods.  Or, as some may mistakenly believe: the devil.  However, in 1889 a chain of events would be set into motion that would topple not only this sacred maple, but half the city of Louisvile.   Mr. Mengel, of the famous Mengel Lumber Company, was head of the city's planning committee and was scouting for trees to be used for Louisville's May Day celebration when he laid his eyes upon the majestic maple.  He knew that he had to have that tree, it was so tall and so straight, it was born to be a May pole.  The news quickly reached the ears of the witches, perhaps even before the thoughts formed in Mr. Mengel's mind.    One night, under the cover of darkness and a velvet hood, the priestess of the coven knocked on Mr. Mengel's door.  He answered, displeased, and she implored him not to cut down their beloved maple.   “I will do no such thing!” he bellowed.   “Please sir, I beg you to consider your actions very carefully.  I will ask once more for you to please not fell our sacred tree.”   “And I will tell you once more that I will be chopping down that tree”   “Very well,” the priestess said calmly, looking up from beneath her hood, “I asked you nicely and you refused, now you shall face the consequences.”   Before Mr. Mengel could even ask what she meant dozens of cloaked figures emerged from all directions: from behind the trees, around the street corners, and some even seeming to appear out of thin air.  They slowly began to gather together, holding hands as they chanted:   This tree shall stand and not be cut, We've fed her with our laughter. Our leafy haven you'll not gut. Or pay forever after.   But if you, Wooden King, prevail, And Mother Maple dies, The force of Fate shall strike this town And right between the eyes.   If our tree falls, yes, Fate will call To teach you, heartless Dunce, That all man's work can disappear. BEWARE ELEVENTH MONTH!   And just as quickly as they appeared, they were gone.  Leaving only the head witch on Mr. Mengel's doorstep.  “Don't say I didn't warn you Wooden King.  Remember, wood burns.”  She smiled a wry smile, swept her cloak, turned on her heel, and disappeared into the night.   Mr. Mengel paid no mind to the witches' warning, and he proceeded with his plans.  The tree was chopped down, and as its heavy trunk smashed to the ground horrid shrieks could be heard echoing through the city.   However, the May Day celebration went off without a hitch.  The trunk of the maple was adorned with ribbons and decorations of all kinds as men, women, and children danced about it.  Afterward, it's carcass was tossed into the Whitsuntide bonfire where to was turned to ash.  Everyone had forgotten about the witches' warning, but 11 months later, to the very day, the curse would take effect.   On March 28, 1890, the witches whipped up a hell of storm to terrorize the city of Louisville.  They first sent it down Maple Street, proving it was their craftwork, and into downtown.  Here, the storm flattened buildings, killing and injuring many – and among them were the members of the May Day committee and two members of the Mengel family.  And then, according to eyewitnesses, the twister made a bizarre right-hand turn down sixth street.  As it barreled down Sixth Street toward Park, the storm hurled a lightning bolt straight into the stump where the sacred maple had once stood.  From this charred base grew what is now known as the witches' tree: a gnarled wretched thing with great burls and thin branches like the bones of a witches' hand.   Since the day of the storm it is said that coven has returned to cast their spells beneath the twisted branches of the witches' tree.  Visitors to Louisville place flowers at the base of the tree and hang beads and charms from its branches as gifts to the city's witches, in hopes that they may cast a spell in their favor.  Meanwhile, the citizens of Louisville have never dishonored the wishes of a witch since in fear that their city may once again fall to ruins.       What a cute little story, right?  Wrong.  The articles about the witches' tree make it sounds like there was this little twister that rolled through Louisville but no…on March 27, 1890 there was a tornado outbreak and it was the most deadly tornado event in United States history.  I didn't know that a tornado outbreak was a thing?  But now that I know it is, I am absolutely horrified.   You may have caught that I said March 27th and not March 28th.  This is another case of modern journalism recounting the date that an event was reported, not the date that it occurred.  Much like the Carnegie medal situation in episode one.   So, on March 27th 1890 there was a massive outbreak of tornados, dubbed the Storm Demon by some papers, though it appears tornados may have just been called this as I saw newspapers for years after and prior calling them storm demons.  Which may be more errors in modern journalism, but I digress.  This outbreak created a number of storms ranging in intensity from F2 to F4 on the Fujita scale (which goes to 5 by the way).   The tornado that hit Louisville was an F4 storm with winds ranging from 207-260 miles per hour and it destroyed 766 buildings totaling 2.5 million dollars (the modern equivalent of $71 million dollars) in damage.  The storm killed an estimated 74-120 people though initial estimates were around 800, with most of the victims being those within the Falls City Hall building.   The newspapers at the time had a slew of eyewitness accounts.  Now, I will be forthright to say the sources I acquire historic newspapers from did not have the newspapers from Louisville for this time range.  But, fortunately, many newspapers back in the day would run columns verbatim from other areas if it was major news and I was able to acquire them this way.   Now, one of the newspapers I read listed off all of the confirmed dead at the time, and I was not able to find the name “Mengel” anywhere within them.  Two of Mr. Mengel's relatives were said to have died.  This at the moment is unconfirmed.  Also, before we get into the real horror, because I want to read eyewitness accounts, I wanted to talk about the witches' warning.  It has been told many ways – the way I told it was much more dramatic.  The chant I said was said to have been left on a note nailed to the tree, but other sources, or should I say the same exact source said that the warning had been uttered as a simple warning of “Beware 11th month” to Mr. Mengel.  This same source I am talking about is the author and historian David Domine who gives haunted tours.  It is hard to take his word for it when he has been quoted with two distinct stories, and I don't know what his book on Louisville says occurred…I didn't want to buy a physical copy and I can't get the e-book version from the library.  He's a professor, so I'm sure things may be cited in his book but I have to stay the story is a bit crumbly.   Like Falls City Hall.   An excerpt from the Greenville Journal from Thursday, April 3 that describes what happened at the city hall:   “The great center of death is the Falls City Hall where more than two hundred men, woman, and children are entombed.  It is situated on Market street, near Twelfth.  The structure was three stories in height and when struck by the tornado, several meetings were being held within it.  The loss of life at this place far exceeds that at any other one locality and of the great numbers known to be under the debris it is certain that none will be recovered alive.  The ruins are now scarcely one story high so thorough was the work of the wind.”   It goes on to detail some of what was going on in the building at the time:   “On the second floor of this building Miss App was teaching a dance class of young children, and there were present the mothers, fathers, and other attendants of the gay juveniles.  In one of the rooms on this floor the executive body of the Roman Knights was in session.  Of the seven members present all escaped but one.    On the third floor Jewell Lodge No. 2, Knights and Ladies of Honor was holding a meeting.  This was one of the largest lodges of the order, and there were 150 members present when the building fell.  A mere handful of these escaped.”   It describes more in attendance and recounts the tale of A.J. Reed the Past Grand Master LOOF of the State (I don't know what that is) said:   “I was entering the hallway when the tornado struck the building at the southeast corner.  There were several crashes and the structure began to rock, whereupon the men and women from the Knights of Honor meeting began pouring out of their lodge room adjoining shrieking in terror.  It was only for a moment though for the building collapsed and I found myself on top of the great pile.  I was stunned and blinded by the dust, but recovered myself and crawled out.  The agonizing shrieks of others were terrible.  I was finally taken away by a rescuing party.”   So I know that was a lot of reading, but this is the main building where the most life was lost.  I'm unsure if the children in the dance class were okay.  There are some pretty terrible accounts from the Sacramento Daily Record from Saturday the 29th.   Lewis Simms Jr.'s wife and four kids were in the dance class and he paced outside city hall for hours while workers searched the ruins.  Eventually the dance room was reached and his wife was found fatally wounded.  Three of the four Simms children were recovered unconscious and not expected to live.  To make matters worse, before his fourth child could be found, a fire erupted in the wreckage and no more bodies were able to be recovered.   Poor Miss App, the schoolteacher, was one of the bodies recovered before the blaze broke out.   I'm going to read a few more stories, I hope you don't mind.  I know this episode is really depressing and heartbreaking.  But I feel like this particular legend is another example of a city attempting to cope with a horrible tragedy.

The British Broadcasting Century with Paul Kerensa

For ep 15, our story of broadcasting reaches one John Reith, who spots a job advertisement in the Morning Post. He's never heard of broadcasting. But what led him to that point? Revisiting landmark moments of our story so far, we'll trace Reith's unusual, unorthodox, unexpected life. From son of the manse to voice of the nation, via love, friendship, war... and all three of those are somehow mixed up together in Reith's beloved: Charlie. It's quite a story, and we're indebted to Ian McIntyre's The Expense of Glory, Garry Allighan's Sir John Reith, Marista Leishman's My Father: Reith of the BBC and Charles Stuart's edited The Reith Diaries. Most quotations are from the latter. I recommend all four books for a deep-dive into this. Plus an Airwave Memory from Cole Moreton, whose marvellous book is The Light Keeper - also recommended. For pictures, discussion and other bits and pieces, join us on Facebook and Twitter and 'like' or 'follow' or whatever they call it now there. You can support the show via ko-fi.com/paulkerensa for one-off £, or patreon.com/paulkerensa for regular perks - including advance writing and things from Paul. Paul's mailing list is very much joinable, for a monthly update of this, that and the other (writing, gigs, podcasts, etc). As mentioned on the podcast, Paul's festive history book Hark! The Biography of Christmas is now in audiobook form. There's an Audible free trial here if you've not had one before - so you can get Hark! for free, then cancel, and pay nowt. (Full disclosure - I get a couple of quids if you click and activate that, even if you only ever do the free trial.) (Oh and another full disclosure - I'm happy to take a few quid from Amazon, but I'd rather not line Jeff Bezos' pockets much further, so if you're going to buy Hark! The Biography of Christmas, this link takes you to Hive, which supports local independent bookshops - or just ask yours direct. I'm sure they'd love to hear from you.) Paul's Facebook Live show is PK's Uplift Live, every Tuesday from 8pm. Do join. Occasionally he talks about broadcasting history there too. There's also a quiz, some comedy, and an attempt at normality. Thanks to Will Farmer for composing the original music. Archive clips are either public domain or private domain from so long ago, it's nigh-on-impossible to trace... but if you own a clip and want it removed, we'd be happy to oblige. We're just here to inform, educate and entertain - thanks for helping us do so. (This podcast is not affiliated with the BBC. Unless they'd like it to be. But as it stands, this entire operation is just one bloke shouting into his wardrobe. Thanks for listening. Otherwise it's just the shirts.)

The Cricketer, on the edge of a well-deserved century, is the oldest surviving cricket magazine in the world – and shows no sign of leaving the crease. With Peter Oborne and Richard Heller in their latest cricket-themed podcast are its managing editor, and historian, Huw Turbervill, and its editor, Simon Hughes, known to millions from his televised appearances as the Analyst. They reveal that another distinguished centenarian, Captain Sir Tom Moore is a subscriber and an avid cricket follower. They trace the history of The Cricketer, from its foundation in 1921 as a worthwhile activity for Plum Warner after his retirement from first-class cricket. Although it followed the Great War and the Spanish flu pandemic but  neither figured much in its early pages.  Initially a weekly newspaper (at six old pence, about the price of a pint of beer), it began a tradition of securing famous cricketers and distinguished authors as contributors for little or no money.Besides being general editor of The Cricketer, Warner was cricket correspondent of the (ultra-conservative) Morning Post newspaper. He combined these roles with managing England's Bodyline tour of Australia in the 1930s an arrangement unthinkable today, which caused Warner considerable stress. In 1939, The Cricketer greeted the outbreak of war with a memorable cricket-themed editorial. Gallantly, the staff coped with paper shortage and the Blitz to bring out issues throughout the war, which were much appreciated by British prisoners-of-war.Huw and Simon share vivid memories of two distinguished contributors – E W Swanton, grandiose and overbearing but devoted to cricket and good writing, and Christopher Martin-Jenkins, gentle, humorous and always running late, who inspired deep loyalty. They analyse the innovative competitions in English cricket introduced and still supported  by The Cricketer, the Cup for old boys' teams, and the highly popular National Village Trophy, which gives village teams the chance of playing at Lord's (even in this Covid year.)Huw and Simon reveal the ructions caused by their two-yearly attempts to name the players and writer with the greatest influence in cricket. They reveal those who objected to being demoted or under-placed.They describe The Cricketer's tight relationship with its readers and its determination to cover cricket at all levels. Recent issues have had a more social focus, and Simon outlines the magazine's treatment of BlackLivesMatter and the loss of black people to English cricket. Outlining  his latest book A New Innings, co-authored with Manoj Badale owner of the IPL team, Rajastan Royals, Simon charts the generally benign effects of T20 on global cricket. He also sets out the revolutionary implications of the new relationships between cricketers and spectators through sophisticated digital platforms. These could make cricket thrive even if live spectatorship remains off-limits due to Covid (or the next virus).

This episode is going to concentrate on the minutiae of the British army surrounding the city of Gold, Johannesburg. Its the city that was the main cause of this war with its gold and uitlanders or immigrants, who were mainly English speaking and had demanded the right to vote in the Transvaal. It was Kruger who denied them this vote knowing that his government would disappear under the weight of the uitlander city men and women who were colonials through and through and his culture would end. That was the belief. For black Johannesburgers who lived under the harsh Calvinistic overtones of the Boer rule, it was the possibility of freedom that beckoned. Little did they know that the British would impose far harsher rule on blacks than the Boers, and in fact the British adherance to their imperial bureaucracy meant that the weak control over black movement for example would be beefed up with the arrival of the super-efficient British Empire. So as the townships of the Witwatersrand echoed with happy sounds as black residents waited in expectation for the British arrival, the Boer administrators were rushing to empty the city of all its valuables. Twenty six kilometres away to the south west, Roberts was coming to visit. The main song sung by troops in his army was “We're marching to Pretoria” which became a clarion call and a morale booster during tough times. The pattern of the advance rarely faltered, and surprised even Lord Roberts and one of the most famous war reporters riding alongside - Winston Churchill. He'd already been imprisoned and escaped from Pretoria, only to return to report for the Morning Post newspaper on the battles since. However, Churchill was beginning to have his doubts about the British role in this war.

Winston Churchill who had been captured near Chieverley on the railway line between Escourt and Ladysmith in October and was lucky not to have been shot on the spot. While ostensibly working as a war correspondent for the Morning Post newspaper, he really was more than an imbedded reporter. Churchill's father was Lord Randolph, a British Lord and well-known politician. Churchill literally took over the situation when his train was ambushed and issued orders to the commander who followed his orders. The Boers capture of one the empire's famous sons was deeply embarrassing for the British commander Redvers Buller. But Churchill's escape coincides with a terrible battle called Spion Kop which resonates to this day in so many ways.

It is popular to look at today's political challenges through the prism of prime ministers past, but when it comes to former liberal leaders it's usually Robert Menzies, not Alfred Deakin, who comes to mind. However Judith Brett, emeritus professor of politics at La Trobe University and author, says we have much to learn from Australia's second prime minister. Her new biography, The Enigmatic Mr Deakin, reveals the intense inner world of one of the most important fathers of Australian federation, who led the fledgling nation for three separate stints. Brett says Deakin was something of a puzzle - even to himself. As PM he had an unusual double life, anonymously penning political columns for The Morning Post in London - a well kept secret at the time. He was a gifted orator, but above all he harnessed his optimism to operate a government of compromise at a challenging time. “He saw himself as between the ultras - the ultra tory obstructionists and the part of the Labor party that was firming up as more ideological in his terms.” Brett argues that despite Deakin's undeniable charisma and skills in persuasion, his tendency towards great introspection and solitude means he would find the intensity of contemporary politics and media overwhelming. For today's two major parties “brand differentiation has become more important than actually solving problems”, Brett says, while Deakin advocated “policy before the needs of the party.”
