--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/damien515/message

Looking back over a year of In The Studio, we consider the role of the artist's muse. Why does one subject suggest itself above all others, how does an artist then go about incorporating that subject into their work, and what, if any, are the pressures they feel? From Nitin Sawney's latest work marking the 60th anniversary of Benjamin Britten's War Requiem; through Sally Beamish, whose Proms composition was inspired by bees; to Yuri Herrera's historical novel about Mexican leader Benito Juarez, and Stephen Page, whose aboriginal-heritage inspired his dance work for Sydney Festival; to Elizabeth McGovern who took Ava Gardner as her muse for her latest theatrical performance. We explore how each of these artists used their muse to create a work of art.

Yuri Herrera is a political scientist, editor, and prize-winning novelist, considered one of the most relevant Mexican writers in the Spanish language. When we meet him he's starting his new novel, which he says will take him in a different direction to his previous books, basing it on Benito Juarez, the first President of Mexico of indigenous origin. What's less known about him is that he was exiled briefly, in 1853, to New Orleans where Yuri now lives. We join him as he walks the streets Benito would have walked, searching for inspiration as he embarks on his writing.

The nineteenth century was a year of almost constant war for Mexico. One of those wars was against the French who invaded the country because Mexico's president, Benito Juarez, refused to pay its debts to France. Secretly, though, the French dreamt of expanding their empire, installing a puppet ruler, and then marching northward to assist the Confederacy in the Civil War.   Before that was possible, the French army needed to capture Mexico City. To do that, they needed to pass through Puebla. The invading forces, 6,000 strong, expected this to be easy. They did not expect to get their butts whooped by a band of 2,000 poorly outfitted Mexicans, mostly indigenous villagers and South Texas vaqueros, under the command of 32-year-old Gen. Ignacio Zaragoza. That skirmish is called the Battle of Puebla. It occurred on May 5, 1862.   Its more common name is Cinco de Mayo, a minor holiday in Puebla, where it is commemorated with parades and reenactments. It's not a federal holiday. It's not Mexico's Independence Day. In fact, Mexicans across the republic don't even get the day off. North of the Rio Grande and across the globe it's another story.   Cinco de Mayo is as much about heroics as St. Patrick's Day is about a holy man. Both are the result of well-executed campaigns that turned specific holidays into drinking amateur hour. But this isn't an episode about vomiting on the steps of St. Patrick's Cathedral—yes, I've witnessed that. This is about May 5, which Isidro and I call Cinco de Gringo.   FACO Favor delivery app searching for Chief Taco Officer https://blog.favordelivery.com/now-hiring-chief-taco-officer-9a292e780706   TAQUOTE If you live life as if your next taco will be your last, one day you will be right!   SOCIAL MEDIA Isidro Salas: @10ktacos José Ralat: @tacotrail   LINKS https://www.caller.com/story/news/2018/05/14/significance-cinco-de-mayo-and-its-south-texas-connection/609369002/   https://www.texasstandard.org/stories/the-hero-of-cinco-de-mayo-was-a-texan/   https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/cinco-de-mayo   https://news.utexas.edu/2016/05/05/cinco-de-mayo-and-the-battle-of-puebla-have-relevance-today/   https://vinepair.com/wine-blog/how-corona-made-cinco-de-mayo-an-american-holiday/   https://txglo.medium.com/the-texas-hero-of-cinco-de-mayo-ignacio-zaragoza-and-the-origins-of-the-celebration-8e1e3df27118   https://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/entries/fiestas-patrias-and-cinco-de-mayo

Zaczynajmy.

Espiritual. Financiero. Cooking Class in Puerto Vallarta with Mavi Graf of Arte Culinario

This week, I have a couple of interviews, one with Christopher Mattocks at Lighthouse Specialty Foods on Lazaro Cardenas, on the South Side of Puerto Vallarta,  and my featured guest Mavi Graf of Arte Culinario and we will be talking about her and her cooking classes and all about herself, but first, what’s happening this week in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico March 21st, 2018.   Listen to The Show   [caption id="attachment_2687" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Mavi Graf[/caption] [caption id="attachment_2689" align="alignleft" width="220"] Mave Arte Culinario[/caption] Semana Santa in Puerto Vallarta Semana Santa is coming early this year. Yes, Easter falls on April first and Semana Santa Starts Sunday the 25th of March, and ends on Saturday the 31st. Then Easter on Sunday…April Fools, and another week of Spring Break. Remember that Puerto Vallarta will be at full occupancy during this time. You have the locals on spring break from school, you have many families coming in from Guadalajara and the surrounding areas. So, if you are thinking about a nice quiet time, look out. The beaches are crowded, the hotels are full and college age visitors from all over, descend on Vallarta. I talked about Semana Santa in the episode with the owner of El Arrayan, Carmen Porras last year, but I suppose it doesn’t hurt to do a quick [caption id="attachment_2695" align="alignright" width="336"] El Arrayan[/caption] review of the holiday and how it’s celebrated here in Mexico. As you may have noticed, here in Mexico, they like to celebrate. They love holidays, and this is no exception. And they go big. We are coming up on a two-week holiday consisting of Semana Santa (The Holy Week, beginning on Palm Sunday and ending Easter Saturday) and Pascua (Starting with Easter Sunday and ending the following Saturday). Semana Santa is without a doubt, the most important holiday in Mexican culture. All over Mexico, Mexicans celebrate the last days of Christ during Holy Week with elaborate processions, ceremonies, and rituals. Most of the larger Semana Santa celebrations include a dramatic reenactment of the capture, the trial, and the crucifixion of Jesus. Mexicans have been known to practice acts of physical torture, public displays of political/social ridicule, and displays of resolutions and commitment. And as I mentioned last year, some of the more devout regions of Mexico like Taxco, the reenactments include penitents – men and women who show their penitence and prove their faith by inflicting physical pain. Many of us have seen these reenactments. But in Puerto Vallarta, they don’t go all out Taxco. They do have lots of parades and processions. It’s very cool. Just be ready for the crowds. Mexico Celebrates The Birthday of Benito Juarez Today is the birthday of Benito Juarez who was the 26th president of Mexico. Juarez was born March 21st 1806. And although they celebrated the holiday on Monday, due to Article 74 of the Mexican labor law (Ley Federal del Trabajo) which provides that the third Monday of March (regardless the date) will be an official holiday in Mexico. As with Constitution Day, the holiday was originally celebrated every year on the same date (March 21), but the federal labor law was modified in 2005 so the holiday is always celebrated on a Monday however, this is the day of Juarez’s birth. What a mouthful! A quick Wiki search https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benito_Ju%C3%A1rez#/media/File:Benito_Pablo_Ju%C3%A1rez_Garc%C3%ADa.png [caption id="attachment_2662" align="alignright" width="248"] Benito Juarez[/caption] He was of poor, rural, indigenous origins, but he became a well-educated, urban professional and politician, who married a socially prominent woman of Oaxaca City.[3] He identified primarily as a Liberal and he wrote only briefly about his indigenous heritage.[4] He was a key figure in the group of professional men in Mexico's indigenous south, and his rise to national power had its roots in that power base.[5] He was not an intellectual star of Mexican liberalism or a strict ideologue, but he was a brilliant, pragmatic, and ruthless politician. He held power during the tumultuous decade of the Liberal Reform and French invasion. In 1858 as head of the Supreme Court, he became president of Mexico by the succession mandated by the Constitution of 1857 when moderate liberal President Ignacio Comonfort was forced to resign by Mexican conservatives. Juárez remained in the presidential office until his death by natural causes in 1872. He weathered the War of the Reform (1858–60), a civil war between Liberals and Conservatives, and then the French invasion (1862–67), which was supported by Mexican Conservatives. Never relinquishing office although forced into exile in areas of Mexico not controlled by the French, Juárez tied Liberalism to Mexican nationalism and maintained that he was the legitimate head of the Mexican state, rather than Emperor Maximilian. When the French-backed Second Mexican Empire fell in 1867, the Mexican Republic with Juárez as president was restored to full power.[6][7][8] In his success in ousting the European incursion, Latin Americans considered his a "second struggle for independence, a second defeat for the European powers, and a second reversal of the Conquest."[9] He is now "a preeminent symbol of Mexican nationalism and resistance to foreign intervention."[10] Juárez was a practical and skilled politician, controversial in his lifetime and beyond. He had an understanding of the importance of a working relationship with the United States, and secured its recognition for his liberal government during the War of the Reform. Although many of his positions shifted during his political life, he held fast to particular principles including the supremacy of civil power over the Catholic Church and the military; respect for law; and the depersonalization of political life.[11] In his lifetime he sought to strengthen the national government and asserted the supremacy of central power over states, a position that both radical and provincial liberals opposed.[12] He was the subject of polemical attacks both in his lifetime and beyond. However, the place of Juárez in Mexican historical memory has enshrined him as a major Mexican hero, beginning in his own lifetime.[13] So Happy Birthday Benito Juarez Today you’d be 212 years old. Shucks, you don’t look a day over 66. Get it, he lived to be 66 years old. Okay, let’s get to the interviews shall we? Lighthouse Specialty Foods in Puerto Vallarta Sometimes, when you aren’t looking for it, you find it. I mean, an interview of course. I had just been stood up by an interviewee, I had made an appointment a week earlier for an interview, and I’m pretty sure my victim was too hungover to sit with me. I won’t tell you who he was, and I won’t tell you where it was, because I don’t want to embarrass him. Who knows, he might be sobered up in May or June when I come back to Vallarta, but, I was walking down Lazaro Cardenas across from the market when I came across a couple of guys, enjoying a cold cerveza, Oh [caption id="attachment_2664" align="alignright" width="300"] Christopher Mattocks[/caption]   Oh…Booze again, but they weren’t too far gone. In fact they were more than happy to talk with me. They asked if I wanted to sample some of what they were selling, and it was really good. So I decided to make lemonade out of lemons and ask Christopher Mattocks if he would talk with me about his place, a real hole in the wall, Lighthouse Specialty Foods. You remember when I told you about how, sometimes the real interview happens after I put away the microphones, well, Mavi was telling me that when she made a decision to have the classes in her home, her husband was against it. You know, the safety factor and all, but she said, at some point, you need to trust people. To invite them in to your home and let them see a little bit into your life. It’s how we build trust between cultures, between boundaries. And she said it was the most wonderful thing that has ever happened to them. The people they meet, the relationships they have built has been amazing and that has been the biggest surprise to them is just these friendships have grown into more than just a cooking class. That’s classy. I hope Mavi, it was okay for me to step in, and add that part of the interview that came, after the microphoned were put away, and thank you for inviting me into your home, and making me feel like a part of your family too. For most of Mexico's developing history, a small minority of the people were in control of most of the country's power and wealth, while the [caption id="attachment_1960" align="alignright" width="300"] Revolution Day, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] majority of the population worked in poverty. As the rift between the poor and rich grew under the leadership of The President, General Porfirio Díaz, who was the hero of the battle of Pueblo, the holiday celebrated on cinco de mayo. Well Diaz really was a repressive dictator who ruled over Mexico for almost 30 years, from 1884 to 1911. The poor were brutally treated during that period of time.  Opposition of Díaz did surface, when Francisco I. Madero, educated in Europe and at the University of California, Dude went to Cal Berkley, go figure, anyway, Madero led a series of strikes throughout the Mexico. Díaz was pressured into holding an election in 1910, in which Madero was able to gather a significant number of the votes. Although Díaz was at one time a strong supporter of the one-term limit, he seemed to have changed his mind and had Madero imprisoned, feeling that the people of Mexico just weren't ready for democracy. [caption id="attachment_1962" align="alignright" width="247"] Francisco I. Madero[/caption] Once Madero was released from prison, he continued his battle against Díaz in an attempt to have him overthrown. During this time, several other Mexican folk heroes began to emerge, including the well-known Pancho Villa in the north, and the peasant Emiliano Zapata in the south, who were able to harass the Mexican army and wrest control of their respective regions. Díaz was unable to control the spread of the insurgence and resigned in May, 1911, with the signing of the Treaty of Ciudad Juárez, after which he fled to France. Madero was elected president, but was opposed by Emiliano Zapata who didn't have time for the orderly implementation of Madero's planned land reforms. So in November of 1911,  Zapata denounced Madero as president and took the position for himself. He controlled the state of Morelos, where he chased out the estate owners and divided their lands to the peasants. Later, in 1919, Zapata was assassinated by Jesus Guajardo acting under orders from General Pablo Gonzalez. But that’s another story. [caption id="attachment_1988" align="alignleft" width="276"] Benito Juarez[/caption] Unfortunately, during this time the country split into many different factions, and bands of guerillas roamed across the country destroying and burning down many large haciendas and ranchos. Madero was later taken prisoner and executed, and the entire country was thrown into a state of disorder for several years, meanwhile Pancho Villa was rampaging through the north, and different factions fought for presidential control. [caption id="attachment_1963" align="alignleft" width="218"] Venustiano Carranza[/caption] Eventually, Venustiano Carranza rose to the presidency, and organized an important convention whose outcome was the Constitution of 1917, which is still in effect today. Carranza made land reform an important part of the constitution which resulted in the ejido, or farm cooperative program that redistributed much of the country's land from the wealthy land holders to the peasants. The ejidos are still in place today and comprise nearly half of all the farmland in Mexico as well as much of the land surrounding the Puerto Vallarta area. So how do they celebrate Revolution Day in Puerto Vallarta? They close the schools and make it a holiday of course with parades including military processions, school children, social clubs, everyone gets into the action. So if you ever find yourself in Vallarta this time of year, just another holiday to celebrate, that’s all! [caption id="attachment_1989" align="alignright" width="284"] Emiliano Zapata[/caption] Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Guadalupe Speaking of Holidays and celebrations, Coming up Next week we are going to be talking about the upcoming 13-day pilgrimage to Our Lady of Guadalupe Cathedral. Traditionally it’s 12, but in Vallarta, they do 13, so stay tuned for that, and if you are in town the pilgrimage begins on November the 30th and extends then for 13 days culminating on the 12th of December. [caption id="attachment_1974" align="aligncenter" width="2988"] Inglesia de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe[/caption] I was checking my Twitter feed the other day and say that I missed a few tweets from listeners David and Lucia Garcia, from Miami Florida who were visiting Vallarta with their two young daughters. I’m sending them a microphone to hear about their adventures with children. Something I haven’t done yet, hear from you families who come to paradise on vacation. Looking at their photos, they did a lot and look like they really had a great time. We are going to hear from them in a week or two so thanks David and Lucia, for agreeing to come on and share with the listeners your experiences in paradise with your kids.   It's Thanksgiving time and if you happen to find yourself in Puerto Vallarta for Thanksgiving, you will not have any problems finding the traditional turkey dinner with all the fixings. Restaurants all over town are more than happy to accommodate all the tourists and expats who crave their carved bird with all the tastes of home. Of course, you can have that American grub, I’m sticking to the regular menu thank you very much! I can get turkey any time. Happy Hour Board [caption id="attachment_1975" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] JR's Happy Hour Board[/caption] JR has Revitalized his Happy Hour Board,…. Have a look at it by clicking on the link, and get happy! Really Happy! http://vallartainfo.com/hhb/ Last week we talked about Skips questions about buses, and I wanted to get to his other questions. I asked JR for some help here so here goes… Skip writes...I have been to Rhythms of the Night in Las Caletas. I see from a map that this is in the Yelapa/Las Animas beach area. Is this a private property or can a person take a panga there as well? JR answers..Officially every beach is public, (up to 50M from high water), but Las Caletas is controlled by Vallarta Adventures, all the infrastructure is theirs. So if you kayak in, no bathrooms for you. Skip writes...I love to hike and my brother in law and I  will be doing the Boca de Tomatlan-Las Animas hike that you video archived. Can a person hike to Las Caletas or Yelapa from Boca/ Las Animas? [caption id="attachment_1976" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Map Las Animas to Playa Quimixto[/caption] JR answers...Well Archie, John Huston’s chef, lived in Quimixto and, I think, sometimes hiked a trail, west to Caletas, but probably took a panga. Now Skip,  there is a trail that goes from Las Animas to Playa Quimixto. It's a good, easy trail and it will take you another hour or so. Lots of people hike to the falls from the beach from there. Just remember that many tourists have found that beach too, and lots of tours go there. From there, so you could hike there and then take a panga the rest of the way to las Caletas. and finally Skip writes...Somebody told me they rented horses and took them to Yelapa from Boca, but that was in a bar and alcohol may have been a factor in the accuracy of the aforementioned claim. JR answers...The horse story is BS. By the way, a Great bar on the way on the Boca - Las Animas hike, see my map. Okay skip, I hope that answers your questions. I can't wait to hear back from you about it that hike if you happen to take it that is. Okay let’s get to our guest. We’ll start off with a random trivia question: What is the largest city named after a U.S. President? Today is International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, International Color Day, International Day of Forests, World Down Syndrome Day, World Poetry Day and World Puppetry Day. It’s Independence Day in Namibia, and Human Rights Day in South Africa. It’s unofficially National Flower Day, National Teenager Day, and National French Bread Day. It’s the birthday of former Mexican president Benito Juarez, who was born in 1806; musician and minister Solomon Burke, who was born in 1940; and actress and comedian Rosie O’Donnell, who is 55. Now, we’ll spin the wheel to pick a year at random. This week in 1967, the top song in the U.S. was “Happy Together” by The Turtles. The No. 1 movie was “In Like Flint,” while the novel “The Arrangement” by Elia Kazan topped the New York Times Bestsellers list.  Now for our weekly question: How much per acre did the United States pay for Alaska in 1867? Submit your answer at triviapeople.com/test and we’ll add the name of the person with the first correct answer to our winner’s wall … at triviapeople.com. We'll have the correct answer on Friday’s episode.

During Franz Joseph’s time this room was used as a smoking room to which the gentlemen could retire, as it was considered impolite to smoke in the presence of ladies. Today the room commemorates Emperor Maximilian of Mexico, Franz Joseph’s younger brother. His portrait hangs on the right-hand wall. Maximilian was offered the crown of Mexico in 1864 and despite the difficult political situation there accepted it at the urging of his ambitious wife, Charlotte of Belgium, whose portrait hangs on the left-hand wall. Shortly after the couple arrived in Mexico, France withdrew its support, which meant that Maximilian was at the mercy of the revolutionary forces under the command of Benito Juarez. He was taken prisoner and eventually executed in 1867.

This service came to Vienna from Castle Miramare near Trieste, the former residence of Archduke Ferdinand Max, later to become Emperor Maximilian of Mexico. The archduke was the younger brother of Emperor Franz Joseph. In 1854 he became commander-in-chief of the imperial and royal navy. In 1864 he accepted the emperorship of Mexico, but failed to establish himself in his new empire. He was taken prisoner by the leader of the republican forces, Benito Juarez, who had him shot by firing squad in 1867. You will hear more about this episode in the Imperial Apartments. The dinner service is a product of the Herend porcelain manufactory in Hungary, which initially specialised in copies of Chinese models. Emperor Maximilian ordered this service for his residence in Chapultepek in 1865. Moritz Fischer, the owner of the manufactory, was permitted to display the service in 1867 at the Paris World Exhibition as an advertisement for Herend’s wares.
