This week sees us talking to Cal and Sophie from Other Half - Alfie had the lurgy so sadly couldn't come along but we had a lovely old time anyway. Other Half have been a mainstay of the UK DIY punk circuit for more years than they would care to admit. Puzzling audiences with a combination of caustic dischord-style post hardcore sneering indie rock and tongue-in-cheek classic rock tropes, all tied together with vivid, slice-of-life lyricism. They've put out three records on Venn and Big Scary Monsters respectively, which have all had nice things said about them. So park up and bend your ears back...  enjoy  Pop over to the website (www.onthehuh.org) it has lots of links to other bands stuff and venues as well as a link to an ever evolving Spotify playlist of Norwich bands material compiled by pod producer Reuben Andrews called La musique de Norwich.chin chin

Bicurious are Gavin Purcell (Drums) and Taran Plouzané (Guitars/Vox); a confused, loud two-piece from Dublin, Ireland. They've built a loyal fanbase through extensive touring and have won over crowds both at home and abroad, establishing themselves as a recognizable force on the European rock scene. Bicurious released their second album Your Life is Over Now… on the 4th October 2024 via Big Scary Monsters. The record, which was created over 18 months, three countries and five recording studios, draws influence from the likes of Biffy Clyro, Reuben and Thrice, and is a much more lyrical body of work than Bicurious' previous material, as the band tread new sonic ground. The funding of the album was made possible by a crowdfunding campaign, through which fans helped the band raise over €9000. Thematically, the album explores the various facets of the idea of family, and as one can tell from their crowdfunding efforts, their fans play a crucial role in the band's idea of a family. Letty chats with Gavin and Taran about their progress so far, the new album and influences before Bicurious hit the stage to jam filled Grand Social on the first leg of their Irish tour. Until now that is. I was nervous about speaking to him. I'll explain why when we get into the episode. Oceanator - "Beach Days (Alive Again)" from the 2022 album Nothing's Ever Fine on Big Scary Monsters. "By the ocean / Is where i wanna be / When this all comes to an end" On her 2020 debut album Things I Never Said, Brooklyn-based songwriter Oceanator (real name: Elise Okusami) pondered the apocalypse against grungy guitars and Green Day-inspired pop/punk. On her follow-up LP Nothing's Ever Fine, she continues to explore similar themes... except on today's Song of the Day. “I feel like summer is supposed to be the good times,” she toldUnder the Radar. “I wanted to write some songs about some of the good parts of life, and a lot of those are — for me at least — in the summer.” Her sophomore full-length was co-produced by Bartees Strange and her brother, Mike Okusami, who each brought their musical expertise to the table. “Bartees and Michael both have this really extensive knowledge of sound and gear,” she explained. “So, it was extremely helpful to be able to translate what I was saying into sounds. Maybe I could have gotten some of the sounds on my own, but it would have taken like 10 years.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

One of the ultimate aims of this podcast is to introduce lesser known bands to a new audience, which is why we're all pretty chuffed to be doing This is the Third Album of a Band Called Adebisi Shank by Adebisi Shank. Hailing from Wexford in Ireland, Adebisi Shank were a band for about 8 years, and in that time released three albums and one EP. Throughout their life, they were able to release music on some cool labels (Big Scary Monsters, Richter Collective, Sargent House) and tour a whole bunch with great bands. Their music is often classed as “math rock” and whilst they occasionally took issue with that, it's probably the closest genre to place these guys in. For a three piece, they made a tremendous racket, and made, we think, some of the craziest, catchiest pseudo-instrumental math rock that you can possibly imagine. Indeed, this, their final album, is their true zenith. It combines all the math rock time signature instrumental madness with a real sense of joyful abandon, coupled with ridiculous guitar and bass tones, awesome drum sounds and some appropriate robotic vocals. Most of all though, this album is just pure fun. Like, really really fun. It's quite over the top in places but it all works. It's carefree. Exuberant, even. In this episode we talk about that at length. We also talk about the rest of the band's catalogue and why they never once fall into the self serious overplayed nonsense that a lot of math rock falls into. More folk need to listen to this band and we think it absolutely is an unsung classic. Agree? Disagree? Vote below.

Devolver. On this episode we talk to Jamie Lenman, best known as the singer, guitarist and songwriter for underground heroes Reuben. Reuben released two albums with Xtra Mile and joined bands like Biffy Clyro, Fightstar and Billy Talent on tours around the UK and Europe. Upon their return, they founded their own label, Hideous Records, through which they released a live DVD documentary and their third, critically acclaimed album, ‘In Nothing We Trust’. In 2011, after over a year without playing any music, Lenman began working on an ambitious double solo album of folk/blues and thrash metal, which was released in 2013 to critical acclaim. After a dazzling live tour featuring a three-piece brass section, Lenman returned again to his illustration work and began recording new music with Prodigy and Idles producer Space in his Guildford hideout. He shortly signed with indie giants Big Scary Monsters and released his sophomore record 'Devolver' to widespread critical acclaim, following a lengthy and innovative pre-order campaign. Recently, I had a twitter exchange with a chap who asked me what I thought about streaming services. The crux of his argument was that if an artist owns the masters, they stand to make more in streaming revenue than those who do not, and that if this was the case, then an artist can make a lot of money through streaming services if you can get your music in the right place/places.I'm not sure if that's true – to make some cash from music you need a proper release strategy, good PR and luck. It remains to be seen if such an approach can work for streaming. Royalty distribution is poor for all but the most popular artists, regardless of whether they own their own masters. Instead, I advised him that the best way of making a success of yourself, of getting your music heard, is to work hard touring and just get your music out there as much as possible. That's what Kamikaze Girls did. They've only released one EP and a single to date, but they've been a band for a number of years. 2016 was a busy year for the band, touring extensively in the UK and the US. The result? Signing to Big Scary Monsters, booking bigger tours and releasing their debut album. That's what hard work, drive and focus get you. There is no such thing as an overnight success, and I think most people realise that by now. The old-fashioned ways still work. It's been great to see Kamikaze Girls grow in stature. Their new album Seafoam is brilliant, showing a real progression as songwriters and performers. There's a weathered quality to their music now, and a focus which is entirely different from what's come before.I met Lucinda and Conor when I arranged a show for the band in 2016. I tried to arrange an interview at that time, but the nature of my brain and the stress of running a show (whilst playing it) proved too much, so the interview didn't happen. You could probably say this interview was a year in the making. This is one of the stranger interviews I've done. Camped out in a car and under threat from marauding parking wardens, I sat in the back whilst they sat up front. Gnarwolves can be heard soundchecking below us, and there's a couple of interruptions (some of which I cut out) alongside street sounds and engine noises. It's a bit NPR, except more punk rock, more fly-by-night, more ramshackle. We were pushed for time here too, so the interview ends a little abruptly. The next time I see them they'll no doubt have even more fans, and hopefully we can pick up where we left off.Featured MusicIntro: David Szesztay – CombatOutro: Blue Dot Sessions – InessentialI make no claim to the copyright of any of the music in this episode.
