The fact that money is so measurable is both a blessing and a curse. It's a blessing because your budget, your salary, how much you have set aside in investment accounts- basically all dollar amounts in your life are very quantifiable. And because of that it's not difficult to make some tweaks in order to see some movement with your net worth. Awesome! But at the same time it's a curse- because these are measurements that are so readily available, we can often overly rely on these numbers to let us know how we're doing in life. If you're overly focused on the numbers and if your life satisfaction is purely determined by how much you've got in the bank, then we'd argue that you're incorrectly using your wealth as the main measurement of life satisfaction. So hear us out: the argument we're putting forth today is that maybe we should all consider dying destitute! We discuss some great reasons to consider spending all your money, how to spend your money in a way that brings you the most joy and happiness, whether you should give money away before or after you die, and some thoughts on leaving money to your kids. The start of 2020 was an especially weird time for me—not just for the obvious reasons with the pandemic swirling around us in those early stages—but because right at the cusp of it I signed a book deal. I'd come up with the rough idea and concept for Modern British Beer in 2018, having thought at length about how the emergence of well over 1000 new breweries in the UK had changed our beer culture forever. But what I didn't realise then was the idea needed time. Some of that was to allow the idea to properly gestate and to become fully formed, but the rest of it was waiting to find the right home for it. That home turned out to be the capable hands of CAMRA Books; the publishing arm of the Campaign for Real Ale, and the gracious editing of Alan Murphy and Katie Button, to whom I am incredibly thankful. In this episode I work through the ideas at the book's core. I explore how I created my own personal beer philosophy, which I call “the broad spectrum of joy” as well as explaining why my definition of what constitutes beer as being “modern”, at least, in context of the book and how I think about beer these days. I then try to explain (or make excuses for) how I selected the 86 beers to use as case studies which, together, I hope form a solid case for how I feel beer in the UK has changed so dramatically over the past 20 years—but also, in many ways, has stayed exactly the same as it has always been.I've also used this episode as a chance to pick up on some current affairs—namely, the controversy presently surrounding Denmark's Mikkeller Brewing company in the wake of numerous accusations of sexual harassment and toxic workplace culture from several former employees. This situation escalated on the eve of the brewery's annual Mikkeller Beer Celebration Copenhagen (MBCC) event in late October, which saw over 40 breweries pull out at the 11th hour so as not to associate their brand with the accused. Zombie Dreams was created with the idea of bringing the flavors and notes of a cranberry mimosa to beer. After letting their in-house lactobacillus culture sour their wort, they added cranberry puree and Sauvignon Blanc grape juice to the fermentation. This resulted in smooth aromas of sweet cranberry with hints of tropical fruit. On the palate, the carbonation brings forth the mix of fruit during fermentation with a backend acidity to round things off. Mikkeller Brewing started when Mikkel and his childhood friend, Keller, began working on a series of ‘physics experiments' using malt, hops, and yeast in their home kitchens in Copenhagen. The kitchen experiments lasted for two and a half years and while they continued, Mikkel and Keller also began brewing beer on a larger scale at the Danish microbrewery Ørbæk. In the beginning of 2007, Keller left Mikkeller to pursue a career as the editor of a music magazine, while Mikkel remained on his own to continue pursuing his dream of taking Mikkeller to another level. Mikkeller's growth was rapid, and in 2010 Mikkel decided to bid farewell to his students and colleagues at the school he taught at and decided to commit himself full-time to the brewery. Big triumphs are often followed by bigger letdowns. Our series premiere is about hitting a snag. Vallery Lomas won season four of The Great American Baking Show, but her season never aired due to sexual misconduct allegations against one of the show's judges, Johnny Iuzzini. Mikkel Borg Bjergsø was once a champion runner. After opening his brewery, Mikkeller, he found the steady supply of beer had a negative effect on his stamina. The solution to his problem became a world-wide phenomenon. Alison Roman released her acclaimed cookbook, Dining In, in October 2017. When her recipe for Salted Chocolate Chunk Shortbread Cookies went viral, she became their Instagram "stage mom" and had to learn to deal with some unexpected haters. Season 3, Episode 29 – This week on the show, we’re hanging out at Mikkeller Brewing Company in San Diego, California with Head Brewer Bill Batten and Barrel whisperer Daniel Cady. World renowned gypsy brewer, Mikkel Borg Bjergsø, recently opened a new brewery right here in the United States. Mikkeller is probably one of the best-known gypsy breweries out there, brewing stellar barrel-aged stouts, wild ales, IPA, and more. Opening a permanent brewery in SoCal is pretty huge, not only for Mikeller Brewing Company, but also for beer geeks in the United States. Mikkeller Brewing Company, San Diego Opening a brewery in California is no easy task, which is why Mikkel decided to join forces with San Diego’s AleSmith Brewing Company. In fact, Mikkeller Brewing Company is actually in AleSmith’s former brewery, and they even retained AleSmith’s former Head Brewer, Bill Batten. (AleSmith recently opened a brand new brewery minutes from Mikkeller Brewing, so you should check that out, too). Greg, Jason and Matt with Bill Batten and Daniel Cady (l to r). Bill and Daniel sat down with us to talk about the origins of Mikkeller Brewing San Diego and shared some of the freshest Mikkeller beer we’ve every had, brewed right here in California. Needless to say, but expect exciting things from Mikkeller Brewing in San Diego.
