Huzzah! Another week, another solosode and more research to delve into and learn from. Just what the doctor ordered...But before we cover research, I thought it would be worth our while to learn from the Finnish biohacking experts — one of which is previous TRLR guest, Dr. Olli Sovijärvi — in their massive tome, Biohacker's Handbook. Specifically, I thought it would be great provide you with some strategies and tactics for your sauna sessions via a sauna protocol they provide in the book. It's a protocol I've used myself over the years and works wonders for detoxing.On the research side of things, we first dive into an interesting study that looks at pretreatment with methylene blue in neonatals to reduce toxin-induced brain and cognitive deficits. While it may not seem like the most relatable topic, there are a lot of great take away points from the article that I discuss. The second article thoroughly addresses how the combination of our gut microbiome and dybiosis along with dysfunctional mitochondria and suppressed NAD+ levels set the stage for the dreaded milieu of chronic symptoms associated with Long COVID. While they don't provide solutions for the issues they highlight, it's safe to say that both red light therapy and methylene blue have a major role to play with the road to recovery from Long COVID, based on the root causes outlined in the article. Sometimes you just need to recalibrate and get back to the basics; work on the fundamentals of health versus looking for the newest, coolest thing out there. There is a time and place for utilizing new adjuvants and pieces of technology to help optimize your well-being, but what is the point of adding more if your foundation isn't solid and resilient to begin with? That is what I admire about today's guest from Finland, Dr. Olli Sovijärvi. As someone who is deeply entrenched in the biohacking and technology world, he still advocates for - and instills in his daily routine - the (free) fundamentals of health, which almost all go back to nature or within one's self. On this week's episode of The Red Light Report, Dr. Sovijärvi discusses how anyone can become mentally and physically resilient, seasonal HRV, why he believes everyone should be implementing red light therapy into their health regimen and much more! Dr. Olli Sovijärvi is one of the pioneers of holistic medicine in Finland. At the beginning of his career, Dr. Sovijärvi worked as a medical duty officer at the Finnish Red Cross Blood Service. In 2006 he graduated from the University of Helsinki with a Licentiate degree in Medicine and became self-employed in 2008. In 2010–2011, Dr. Sovijärvi completed an Integral Theory degree at John F. Kennedy University, focusing on psychology and philosophy. For the first five years of his career as a physician, Dr Sovijärvi was employed by Finland's first medical recruitment agency. The job description involved scheduled patient care as well as emergency care and being on call. He has worked at nearly 50 different clinics around Finland. His numerous media appearances, social media articles, and Finland's first health podcast have expanded the general public's awareness of what healthcare can be. Dr. Sovijärvi has also acted as a consultant to various companies and service providers operating in the fields of wellness and health technology. Between 2013–18, Dr. Sovijärvi practiced medicine at a private clinic that specializes in nutrition and holistic health care. The clinic employs physicians and nurses practicing holistic medicine. The clinic features the only trace-element laboratory in Finland. At present, Dr. Sovijärvi focuses primarily on the production of scientific content for preventive healthcare and wellbeing. He also runs training sessions and presentations on the topics of biohacking, performance optimization, nutritional issues, and maintaining the intestinal balance. Dr. Olli Sovijärvi is a medical doctor and one of the pioneers of holistic and preventive medicine in the Biohacking world. In 2006 he graduated from the University of Helsinki with a Licentiate degree in Medicine. He furthered his studies in 2010 – 2011 completing an Integral Theory degree at the John F. Kennedy University, focusing on psychology and philosophy. For the first five years of his career as a physician, Dr. Sovijärvi was employed by Finland's first medical recruitment agency. In this capacity he worked in scheduled patient care and emergency care. He has worked at over 40 different clinics and ER's around Finland. Between 2013 – 2018 Dr. Sovijärvi practiced medicine at an unconventional private clinic that specializes in nutrition and holistic health care. At present, his focus is primarily on the production of scientific content for preventive health care and wellbeing. He is co-author of the Biohacker's Handbook, the most anticipated health & wellness book of the decade and co-founder of Biohacker Center. "Alkuun kiitokset mainiosta podcastista ja anteeksi pitkästä kysymyksestä... Minulla on jo pitkään, eli niin kauan kuin muistan, ollut hankaluuksia päästä kyykkyyn pystyasennosta. "Ass to grass" kyykyasennossa itsessään ei ole ongelmaa mikäli ensin istun lattialle ja sitten menen kyykkyyn. Toinen vaihtoehto päästä alas on pitää kiinni esim ovenkarmista ja laskeutua alas karmista tukea ottaen. Kyykkyongelman lisäksi minulla on ns. "duck tail", eli lantio on kääntynyt eteenpäin. Asioilla saattaa luonnollisesti olla jokin yhteys. Olen ollut molemmista ongelmista tietoinen jo kauan, mutta en välittänyt niistä koska niillä ei ollut suurta merkitystä tällaiselle tavalliselle länsimaalaiselle joka istuu tuolilla kyykkimisen sijaan. Aloitettuani crossfitin tuo kyykky kuitenkin muodustui ongelmaksi kun tajusin, että oikeastaan kehossani on kohtalainen liikkuvuusongelma, joka estää puhdasoppisen kyykyn suorittamisen. Hyvänä päivänä saatan saada reidet vaakatasoon, mutta "below parallel" on lähinnä toiveunta. Lisäksi joudun keskittymään todella paljon, erityisesti isompien painojen kanssa, että pystyn suorittamaan ko liikkeen ilman kipua. Kipu tuntuu lähinnä kiristävänä tunteena alaselän ja pakaroiden tietämillä. Tämä voi joskus tuntua erittäin lievänä jopa ilmakyykyssä (air squat). Tämän johdosta olen tehnyt takakyykkyä kohtuu kevyillä painoilla ja välillä teen takakyykyn sijaan etukyykkyä, joka tuntuu minun tilanteessani tehokkaammalta sillä siinä pääsen helpommin alemmaksi. Etsiessäni ratkaisua tähän ongelmaan hakeuduin ortopedin luokse. Lannerangastani otettiin röntgen, josta todettiin että L4 ja L5 nikamien välinen levy on "kutistunut", eli se on ohuempi kuin sen kuuluisi olla. Lääkäri oli kovin kiireinen ja epäselväksi jäi onko tämä syy kyykkyongelmaani, mutta joka tapauksessa lääkäri kielsi juoksemisen, hyppimisen sekä painojen noston ja kehotti ainoastaan pyöräilemään ja uimaan. Käytännössä siis hyvästit crossfitille. En ole ihan varma tuon "tuomion" järkevyydestä sillä takakyykkyä lukuunottamatta en koe yhtäkään liikettä selkäni kannalta ongelmalliseksi crossfit harjoituksen aikana tai sen jälkeen. Toisaalta jos vietän työpäivän toimistossa paikallani istuen/seisten niin alaselkäni on täysin jumissa. Tämän perusteella tuntuisi siltä, että liikkuminen ei olisi paha juttu... Kysymykset: 1. Onko teillä kokemuksia tämänkaltaisista välilevyongelmista ja mitä itse tekisitte tilanteessani? Aloittaisitteko uuden liikuntauran pyöräillen ja uiden samalla unohtaen crossfit tyyppisen harjoittelun? 2. Ainakin toistaiseksi kuvittelen jatkavani crossfittiä poislukien takakyykky isoilla painoilla. Olisivatko esim etu- tai askelkyykyt hyviä vaihtoehtoja voiman kehittämiselle? Omassa tilanteessani en nähdäkseni takakyykyn avulla voi voimaa kehittää sillä alaselän tuntemukset estävät isompien painojen käytön. Hyvänä päivänä kykenen juuri ja juuri tekemään 3x5 sarjan takakyykkyä noin 70kg:llä (eli noin kehonpainollani). 3. Mikä olisi paras harjoitus kyykyn syventämiseen? Mitä suosittelette tankkaukseen, jos haluaa noudattaa paleo-tyyppistä ja nk. hiilihydraattitietoista ruokavaliota ja välttää turhia sokereita myös ennen suorituksia ja niiden aikana. Ketoosiin ei ole tarkoitus pyrkiä eikä noudattaa VHH dieettiä vaan välttää keinotekoisia hiilihydraattilähteitä myös urheillessa. Lihakset ja maksahan ottavat vain rajoitetun määrän hiilareita vastaan, joten energiaa pitäisi saada irti rasvoista. Kuulisin mielellänne ajatuksianne tankkaamisesta ennen urheilusuoritusta ja mitä tehdä, jos tuntuu, että puhti loppuu suorituksen aikana. Laji on siis suunnistus ja pitkä suoritus on yli kahden lenkki tunnin rata á 15 km. Lyhyemmät pyrähdykset 5-7 km menevät ilman suurempia tankkaamisia. Suoritukset eivät ole tasaista jolkottelua vaan vauhti ja intensiteetti vaihtelevat suuresti kisan aikana.
