On this week's show, we cellebrate the therapeutic nature of out-of-town rock shows with old friends, let there be rock with Drive-By Truckers, wake up to albums we slept on by Tuxedo and Chuck Prophet, and and spin fresh tracks from Parlor Greens, Waxahatchee & The Waterboys. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is over 2 rock-solid hours of musical eclectica & other noodle stories. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004.
Nothing is ever good enough for some people, is it? You've got a centre-right government committing hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer money to feed kids in schools, and they've managed to free up $130 million in savings in the process, and still, it's not good enough for some. The Health Coalition Aotearoa, they're not happy, some dieticians say it's not nutritious enough. "Simply cutting the amount of food that they are having and supplying a more processed, less varied diet is a complete lost opportunity for our health system." I'll tell you what, it's more nutritious than nothing at all, an empty stomach. Some said the food was too processed, it was one size fits all, it wouldn't appeal to the kids. It's not meant to appeal to kids so much as feed them when they're hungry. I thought that was the point. And if they don't eat it, they're not hungry. It's simple. Now, there are some bold claims being made by David Seymour which I am a little sceptical of like the fact that we can do this for $3 a meal. It sounds unheard of, but he gets the benefit of the doubt and my good luck for his cost saving crusade. Guess where some of the savings are going, feeding 10,000 poor 2 to 5-year-olds. David Seymour is the new Robin Hood. In all the flurry of releases yesterday about this, there was one staggering number that stood out to me. Seymour reckons if Labour had adopted his model from the get-go when they launched this program five years ago, we would have saved $800 million dollars. $800 million – they could have had that bike bridge over the Waitemata Harbour, or they could have had more rat tests, or whatever the hell they wanted. It's true, there is no such thing as a free lunch, but thank the lord is at least now a cheaper menu. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Continuing onward with our big summer series, this episode focuses on the second night of Pearl Jam's Mansfield Experiment. With the first night under their belt and the crowd coming into the show aware of the premise, the excitement was at an all-time high. While night 1 was a great introduction to the idea, this show's crowd is up for all of the surprises and answers when called upon for the big call and response moments. While there may be no acoustic set like night 3, the energy at this show was palpable, even though Ed came off a bit grumpy due to a lack of sleep the night prior. Although there were a few rarities spliced in to the night before, this show featured a few songs that you almost never heard at Pearl Jam shows during that era. The most eye opening one was Low Light. Of course Low Light has become a common staple of Pearl Jam sets in recent history, but coming into this show it had only been played one other time at the 2001 Bridge School show. We'll spend time breaking down how this turned into a classic song over time, and some of the pieces that aren't found in recent versions. Other big performances that we'll dive into are Release, Animal, Insignificance, Love Boat Captain, Rival, Rearviewmirror and amazing crowd responses on both Alive and Baba O'Riley. Once again, thank you to everyone who sent in their stories. We'll read another batch of them in the episode. And our Gear Guru segments will focus on the emergence of Low Light, the 2003 rendition of I Am A Patriot and a Jeff Ament driven Rearviewmirror. We're opening up the Vault again for the second of four times in this series! This episode focuses on Vault release #4 that took place in the intimate Mt. Baker Theatre up in Bellingham, Washington. Coming two days before the record came out, this show that amassed no more than 1,500 fans was meant as a preview for the Binaural record with seven songs being played live for the first time. We'll gets to talk about all of the song debuts - Of The Girl, Breakerfall, Light Years, God's Dice, Evacuation, Insignificance and even a few from the record that had already been played in some capacity on television or a Bridge School show. How did these songs sound on first listen? Did we get a sense for what they'd become right away, or did they need time to figure out the right comfort zone for playing these songs? All that, and a story about how Binaural may have been considered a dirty word to some fans back in the early 2000s, specifically someone who may host a Pearl Jam podcast you're currently listening to! We're back yet again at the Key Arena to continue our year long Seattle Hometown series. This show in 2013 was big. It was the tour closer for a tour that reinvigorated a lot of energy back into setlists bringing back songs that they hadn't played in years and changing up format in order to fulfil longer shows. Since this was the closer in Seattle, they knew that they were going to have to bring their a-game arsenal. A whopping 36 songs were played making it an instantly memorable evening. A few talking points during this show include an appreciation for Pendulum as the consistent opening track for this tour as well as an appreciation for the 3-song slowburn startup that frequented setlists this year. We'll dig into how 2013 was a big year for rarities and at this show they brought out one of the rarest of the rare. Let Me Sleep was played once back in 1994 at a Bridge School show, it took them 613 shows before playing it again on this night. Also special from this show is a trio of songs from the Singles soundtrack played in a row for the only time. With 36 songs, it has a been stage atmosphere and while a podcast may not do the visuals justice, the lasting images of Ed and Mike dueling on Better Man and Ed being lifted up on one of the orbs are the big points to remember from this show. Thanks to our Patron, Drew Vipond, for making the request! Check out what's new on our Pearl Jam Concertpedia: http://liveon4legs.com Donate to the show: http://patreon.com/liveon4legs
If you were to take a guess as to what venue Pearl Jam has frequented the most over the last 30 years, would you think Shoreline Amphitheater is the correct answer? If not, then you're wrong. 17 of the performances in the San Francisco area amphitheater came from the Bridge School benefits, but this episode will happen to cover a show played there in 2003. As of most nights from this era, there are some politically motivated moments seeped into this evening. From a pro-activism speech during Porch to a few references to some of the bay area war protests that happened that February, it's not difficult to see what's on the band's mind. However, it being the second leg of this US run following the Nassau Coliseum incident, things are a lot more composed. As long as people didn't fuck with The (Dixie) Chicks, Ed was in good spirits. Tune into this episode to check out great versions of Long Road, You Are, Daughter, Thumbing My Way, Present Tense, Love Boat Captain and an out of this world Crazy Mary. Potentially the best of all-time? One host's opinion may reflect that. Thanks to our Patron Ryan Morden for joining us and selecting this show for us to cover! From School To Homeschool Demetria Giles has over 15 years of experience in education and is passionate about culturally responsive pedagogy, critical thinking development, and project-based learning. She is the former Director of Curriculum & Instruction at 9th Bridge School, a private early childhood and elementary school located in Downtown Las Vegas, Nevada. She is also an education consultant and the homeschool mom of a 9-year-old son. Demetria and I connected on the Clubhouse app and I immediately enjoyed being part of homeschooling conversations with her. She brings abundant knowledge from her years in education but her experience as a mom that has chosen to homeschool her son while working in the school system adds depth to that knowledge. Demetria and I hold very similar beliefs around learning and school and we are both passionate about supporting families on their unique learning journeys. What You'll Hear In This Episode~From School to Homeschool I enjoyed this conversation with Demetria and I am looking forward to having more. If you are curious about how you can create and support a life long learning environment for your child, I recommend you take a listen. Here's what we discussed; The reasons why Demetria chose to homeschool her son while she continued to work in a brick and mortar school The foundation of a great teacher and why it is not a teacher certification What supporting life long learning looks like in her family Her unique approaches to homeschooling while working full time Leading with interests and how to do that when your child's interests are not your own How to cultivate big picture thinking The importance of free time and play Re-framing our ideas of what learning is or should look like The depth of video games The freedom that homeschooling offers Opting out of standardized testing and how kids can still be successful at testing when they are "required" to test Overcoming her own obstacles in homeschooling From school to homeschool-what she recommends to parents that are just getting started Demetria and I close out the episode with her thoughts on what she would like to the future of education and homeschooling to look like. I love that not only is she thinking about it, but she is already doing her part to help make that future happen through her consulting and support. If you are a reader that enjoys good books, Demetria also left us with a few reading recommendations. Find those below in the resources. I studied contemporary dance at Middlesex University and afterwards gained a Masters in Professional Performance from Millennium Dance theatre school. I had many wonderful experiences in my 20's, touring Italy with Fame the musical, working with contemporary dance choreographer Darshan Singh Bhuller on a personal acting project of his, performing with Caburlesque on Britain's Got Talent and reaching the semi finals. Working as a body double/stand in for Ginny Weasley in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Parts 1 & 2) was a highlight.I ended up working as a nanny and a music teacher in between performances and auditions. Jobs with children kept coming thick and fast, and when I made the decision to stop auditioning I worked for Gymboree, Monkey Music and Tick Tock Music as well as being a nanny for families with babies as young as 4 weeks old. I went back to college to study child development further. I obtained the role of Health Visitor Assistant as well as volunteering at The Bridge School, for children with special needs in the music department. I also volunteered as a family visitor for the charity Home Start.I have been a baby massage instructor for 5 years now. I have also become something of an entrepreneur in managing to work a few businesses on the go, meaning I could also use my creativity and go back to what I love without the pressure to earn a living from just performing. For example, I set up a covers band called The Clicks, I was singing in a restaurant for a long while, I have now created my own music curriculum amalgamating all of the best bits I've learned along the way.I trained as a Singing Mamas Choir Leader in 2017 and have found a new vocation! Bringing song into peoples' hearts and homes. With this certification, and the rest of my skills, I moved back home to Liverpool in 2018 and set up my own business called Holistic Harmonies. Our mission is to use the creative arts for the wellbeing of families, neighbours and the community.Holistic Harmonies was granted Community Interest Company status in August 2020 and we are blasting off into the heights of sharing our work with the community now we're able to apply for government grants. This work was kicked off with a project called The Travelling Carol Singing Trio who did a tour of Liverpool during December 2020, bringing festive cheer to the doorsteps of isolated individuals and organisations. All work has copyright protection! Continuing our trip through South America, this week we bring you to where it all began in 2005. This show from Santiago, Chile is the band's first ever in the continent, and while there was some hesitation and concern due to the crowd's size in the early onset, the boys found their comfort zone and fed off the energy of such a passionate group of fans. Joining us on this episode is our friend and patron Javier Hervas who gets to talk a little about his experience of living down in Chile and never getting a chance to see the band. He'll discuss the crowd and how early they were to get there, what it meant to hear the band kick off the show with Release and Corduroy as well as the influence that The Ramones had on South American fans and why their performance of I Believe In Miracles was so special from this night. We'll listen to some outstanding performances and crowd reactions throughout this night including a powerful Even Flow, an outstanding version of Save You and a rendition of Black that blew the crowd away. If you want more from Live On 4 Legs, come join our team on Patreon! For contributing, you'll receive extra bonus episode content (Bridge School shows, song Evolutions) monthly bootlegs of future shows we're covering and a chance to have your Pearl Jam show story told on the podcast! join here: http://patreon.com/liveon4legs
Could this be the best of the five shows played at Wrigley Field? It's a question worth asking. With all that's gone down in Wrigleyville between rain delays to dedications, special and uninvited guests, this can easily be argued as the best of the bunch. Joining the show is our old friend Matt Helbig to help put this massive night into perspective. Both John and Matt were in attendance for this show and right off the bat, you'll notice that they were absolutely stunned by some of the songs they came firing out with. Oceans to open, Footsteps as a #2, Better Man #4 and an old tribute to Jane's Addiction to lead into Corduroy. This set would have Andre Dawson asking what year is this? Because the first 13 songs could've easily been selected from a 1998 setlist and no one would notice. The band went back to their roots for this show and the crowd was rewarded with old favorites like Sonic Reducer and Blood that you wouldn't expect to get busted out on the big stage. As much as this was a night for old cuts, it was also a night for deep cuts as well. The band went into their back catalog to bust out some cherished fan favorites including Black, Red, Yellow that brought Dennis Rodman up on stage. The unreleased crowd-pleaser Of The Earth also made its way onto the set and managed to be one of the top moments of the night. Add those two in with Stone Gossard taking the mic for a little Don't Gimme No Lip and you have a crowd of collectors left satisfied. Overall, this 36-song monster of a setlist that's only had 4 years of life is already considered an all-timer by many hardcore fans. And consider that the Cubs went on a magical run that broke the curse of the Billy Goat that fall, it's safe to say that Pearl Jam spread some magic and left it out on that field to be shared by all. We're back at the festival circuit this week! From Pinkpop 2000's incredibly speedy sprint of a set, we change the landscape a little by bringing in the jammy atmosphere from the 2008 Bonnaroo show. Joining us to share his experiences is patron and friend of the podcast Mike Packard who was one of 80,000 that waited hours to get to see the band play. The curation of this set list was next to perfect, you had your hit songs that you'd expect from any set, but versions of Better Man, Black and Porch hover round 10 minutes long with the latter including one of Ed's most impassioned speeches about making change. Along with hits and songs that give you energetic festival vibes, they busted a few songs out for the serious collectors. Lost Dog opener All Night makes it's first ever live appearance on this show, as well as a full version of W.M.A. that hadn't been performed in that fashion since 1995. We'll also get to talk about the Kanye West controversy that came out of this show. His elaborate stage construction that took 2 hours to rig added in with his narcissistic demeanor threatening the show promoter to put him on stage at a time where no one else was playing. So Pearl Jam took advantage of the timeslot and played for an hour longer than alotted. Kanye's response? Well, it was the beginning of a massive downward spiral that we hear at LO4L don't give a rats ass about! If you want to be like Mike and join the show to talk about your favorite gig, join us on Patreon at patreon.com/liveon4legs. Our Around The World series takes us to France this week as we talk about one of the best shows from the 2006 Avocado tour. Joining us to talk about it are some old friends of the show making a long awaited return, our old co-host Matt Helbig is back and right alongside him is his brother Steve Maytan who gets to share his experience being at this show and doing a small portion of the European tour that year. The show starts off hot with a version of Long Road that on paper would seem a part of the slowburn openers but in turn gives this show the much needed engine start up that pushes them through an extraordinary 6-song kick off to this show. Matt Cameron is the key player on this night and his performance shines through on Corduroy and Even Flow especially. Also on this night you get a handful for the serious collectors. Fatal would be busted out live for only the third time ever, Satan's Bed was thrown in the mix as well as Leash which was in the midst of a resurgence in 2006. But the one talking point from this show that everyone walks away with is the incredibly rare appearance of Dirty Frank. Don't worry, we have a LOT to say about Frank and it's popularity with the fans. We try to both make sense of it and celebrate its presence by breaking down why the band never wants to play it even though its one of the most requested songs from the fanbase. Help support the show! Head on over to patreon.com/liveon4legs to donate and keep us going. We'll have a new Bridge School episode up this week featuring coverage from 1996's night 2 show.
We're back to Europe this week as our Around The World series continues with a stop in Copenhagen, Denmark from 2012. It was the end of a 13-show summer European tour in a year where the band wouldn't tour much outside of those dates and a few late summer US festivals. It would also mark the end of the Backspacer era leading way to new music a year later from Lightning Bolt. It is pretty much a guarantee on the last night of a tour that the band is gonna be in a good mood and leave everything they have on the stage. The Monday crowd brought their A-game too as they showed their chops on versions of Elderly Woman, Do The Evolution, Love Boat Captain, Even Flow and Better Man. The band looked to sprint through the first set (that ended at approx 67 minutes) to get the crowd to sweat inside a very hot building. Happy 75th "official" episode to us as we continue to embark on our Around The World journey in the Scandinavian territory covering the Oslo, Norway show from 2014. While this show has many ups as well as a few downs, its widely known for being the first ever show that the super rare Lost Dog track Strangest Tribe made an appearance at a show. With the Lost Dogs album being out for 10 years prior to this show, there were only a few songs that the band has held out on playing from the double disc. While songs like Undone, Hold On and on one occasion Hitchhiker have been brought to the table, Strangest Tribe was seen as one that would never be touched even though it was incredibly popular with the fanbase. We'll talk about how big of a shock it was to hear that it was played, and having seen the other version of it, Randy will compare it to the Fenway performance. That wasn't the only rarely heard song you got from this show. The band powered through a stretch of uncommon songs in the middle of the main set such as My Father's Son, In Hiding, Sad, Light Years and Garden and then would power through the encore with songs like Satan's Bed, Leash and a rare rendition of Rolling Stones cover Waiting On A Friend. We'll also get you uptodate on news happening in the Pearl Jam universe as we'll discuss the postponement of the 2020 European Tour, the 2017 and 2018 Christmas Singles, and a few highlights from Mike and Stone's Reddit AMA that we were lucky enough to get a question answered from. This week on Patreon we'll have a brand new episode breaking down the live evolution of In My Tree. If you love the song and want to hear us discuss the live history of it, head on over to Patreon.com/liveon4legs to subscribe and check it out! Pledge tiers are at $1 and $5 per month, but all tiers get access to exclusive episodes such as this and many more song evolution, Bridge School and Setlist Draft shows!
What's a better way to enjoy your time social distancing than reliving some of Pearl Jam's best shows in their history? This one we don't have to go back too far as we'll only travel back to 2018 to cover the Krakow, Poland show - another episode in our Around The World series. We picked this show because they'll be heading back to Krakow this summer, barring more postponements, and it's another chance to talk about a smaller city/country that Pearl Jam brings their a-game to. From opening with Of The Girl to busting out uncommon favorites from the Riot Act era, the band was having fun while taking their chances on this very memorable night. But there is no argument that the most important thing that came out of this night was a rare appearance of the Lost Dog track Other Side. Only having appeared two other times at the 2010 Bridge School and Worcester in 2013, this song came as a complete surprise in this set list. Especially in the very early part of the set. This will obviously be one of the only times we get to talk about the song so we do our best to figure out why the band might not bust it out as much as the fans may want them to. Big things happening over on our Patreon this week, we continue our Bridge School series with Night 2 from the 1994 shows. That will be released on Thursday. Head over to patreon.com/liveon4legs to subscribe for this and more exclusive episodes!
Coming off the heels of a major tour announcement where the band will be postponing the first leg of their Gigaton tour, we use the mantra "the show must go on" and use this time to continue to reminisce over the history of Pearl Jam. Since this episode was recorded prior to the announcement, there is no discussion of the news in this episode. If you'd like to hear our take on the situation, please check out our 2020 Tour Postponement episode. For now we go back Around The World to this year's first stop in Europe discussing Budapest, Hungary from 1996. This is their only show in the country to date, but if all goes as planned they'll be making their long awaited return this summer. This was a nice little No Code era show that might get lost in the shuffle. The most notable moment from this show is likely the live debut of Lost Dog Black, Red Yellow. We talk a lot about the No Code era during this tour and whether the band might've thought they were losing steam with their fanbase due to the record's poor reputation at the time. But the band took it with stride and were still able to utilize the new songs in unique ways live. The show has fantastic versions of No Code tracks Who You Are and Habit as well as great performances of Daughter and Immortality. Joining us for this episode is Branden Palomo from the Better Band Podcast. If you want to be a guest on his show, reach out to him via social media on Facebook or Twitter. And if you want to support the show, head to our Patreon at http://patreon.com/liveon4legs if you contribute, you'll get access to all of our exclusive shows include our Evolution and Bridge School series episodes.
This is a special episode because for the first time ever, there will be not one... not two... but THREE shows that we'll get to talk about on this week's episode! We continue our trip around the world by taking on Southeast Asia in places such as Manila, Bangkok and Singapore where the band hasn't played in since. The reason why we're lucky enough to cover 3 shows in this one is because the set lists are fairly short and somewhat similar. This was Jack Irons first tour with the band so it makes sense that they'd keep things simple so that he could adjust, but each show has multiple components that make them stand out. Manila is known for a fan getting onto the stage during Even Flow and security having difficulty handling it. Bangkok is known for the third time that I Got Shit was ever played and the only time that Immortality closed a show. In Singapore, Ed smashed a hole through the stage and the band would enter back through it during the last encore. Also a big part of conversation in this episode is the very taboo Vitalogy documentary that has circulated on YouTube for the last few years. They shot footage on this tour for the purposes of releasing it, but were restricted in doing so. This documentary for years was forbidden to talk about on the Pearl Jam forums and extremely difficult to get your hands on. This week on Patreon we're releasing our second episode in the Bridge School series, the 1994 night 1 show featuring Walking The Cow, an early version of Corduroy and one of the very rare appearances of Let Me Sleep. To check it out, join Patreon and subscribe! patreon.com/liveon4legs for $1 a month you get access to all of our exclusive episodes and a chance to have a show of your choice get selected for an episode!
So we've been back n forth covering all different eras in the mid to late 90's lately, but we don't have to travel too far to get to this episode as only a Gigaton of news has happened since then. We cover the second night of the home shows thanks to our Patron Adriane Petersen who made the request for the episode! We emphasize it so often when discussing this one - this was a homecoming show that paid tribute to early-era Pearl Jam with songs that the folks from day one may remember seeing them playing in clubs like RCKCNDY and the Off Ramp. Oceans, Footsteps, Leash, Rats and even the essentials such as Alive, Even Flow and Porch were seen as a throwback to the band's roots. And to prove that this one was legit, this was the only time since the album released that they hadn't played a song off Lightning Bolt. But with all of the fun that the band had on stage with their Seattle buddies helping them along the way, we can't help but discuss what this 35-song marathon means for future shows. Seeing as how the band is going on tour with an opener for the first time in 8 years this year, we wonder if the length of this show and the band's lack of stamina in their older age has something to do with it. Wait for it around the end of the first encore, the band had a rough time making it out of some spots in this show that was otherwise full of energy. We have weekly exclusive episodes available including our Bridge School and Evolution series. On the last episode we spoke with WWE Hall of Famer Edge about his massive Pearl Jam fandom and one of the many shows he was honored to attend happened to be in Greenville in 2016, the same show where the band performed Vs. in its entirety. As he made mention in our conversation, his reaction to the fans sitting next to him says it all... "you don't know the SIGNIFICANCE of this!!!" We'll hear from Edge more in this episode, but just as importantly one of our hosts was right on the rail for this show. John reminisces about the entire experience, but mainly the moments that made it feel real. After Daughter was played without a tag, something was up. Daughter as the 4th song in was a little funky as is, but as a follow up to Go and Animal, especially after the Moline and Milwaukee shows, people were hopeful that they were getting an unforgettable performance, which they did. The reasoning behind performing the album was that the show happened to fall on Record Store Day, so when Ed opened the show by declaring "let's play some records" he wasn't joking. Versions of Glorified G and Rearviewmirror tore the house down and Indifference mid-set without the lights on made for a memorable moment. They'd also honor the day by playing their two record related songs - Let The Records Play and Spin The Black Circle - as well as dedicated Comfortably Numb to one of Ed's favorite records growing up. If you want to hear more content from Edge and our thoughts on the new single Dance Of The Clairvoyants, head on over to patreon.com/liveon4legs and subscribe. $1 a month gives you all of our exclusive content including Evolution and Bridge School episodes, and it also gives you an opportunity to pick your favorite show for us to cover on the pod!
With all of the hype around the new album and tour announcements, we're still gonna stick around in the past and talk about some of the best shows of this band's history to help you get hyped for all of the exciting events in the coming months! This week we'll dip into another Vitalogy era show that was a make up date from the infamous Golden Gate Park show. Joining us for this episode is Patreon subscriber Debra McMurtrey who recounts being a 16-year old at this show. Debra's stories are what makes this episode stand out. You'll get to hear how she initially acquired tickets to this show and her reaction when she found out it was canceled, and then her long journey of the band rescheduling this show as one of the last stops of the tour. She was crushed in the pit, crowd surfed to Animal and had a religious experience during songs like Rearviewmirror. All while her mom attempted to get some work done while chaperoning. We'll also talk about The Ramones who opened for the band at both of the San Diego shows on their way to their final tour of their career. 30 minutes of catchy, hard-hitting punk rock to open the show and make way for Pearl Jam who were at their classic 1995 best. Highlights to look forward to from this show include Immortality, Long Road and Corduroy. It's time to travel Around The World! This episode is the first installment of our year-long series where we'll tackle Pearl Jam shows from all different countries across the globe. We kick it off in New Zealand where the band was riding high on their red hot Vitalogy South Pacific Tour. This was the final appearance in a 20-show stretch that reached from Japan to The Philippines, down to Australia and finally New Zealand. The band had already been through a ton of difficulty on this tour as the crowds were unruly any place they touched down. They were also filming a documentary at the time that never saw the light of day, but it's something you can now find on YouTube if you dig for it. The biggest takeaway from this show (that doesn't have the finest quality of bootleg) is that Pearl Jam mania is arguably at its peak and the band making an appearance in a country that other bands usually ignore speaks to how high in demand they were at the time. They rocked all of the Vitalogy songs that were released 3 months earlier including ripping versions of Spin The Black Circle and Not For You and got some love at the end of the set performing with NZ band The Split Enz featuring Neil and Tim Finn. Renditions of History Never Repeats and I Got You were major highlights from this performance. This week we'll be releasing an exclusive episode to Patreon where John and Randy will attempt to create a setlist only out of songs from Ten. If you'd like to check out that plus more exclusive episodes (including any song from our Evolution series and Bridge School 1992) head on over to Patreon.com/liveon4legs to contribute. $1 a month gives you access to everything and also gives you a chance to select your favorite show for us to cover on the pod in the future!
Happy New Year and happy new decade! To celebrate the turn of the decade, we're counting down the top ten Pearl Jam shows of the 2010's voted on by you the fans! In preparation for the upcoming Vault #9 release, this week's episode we break down the Seattle show from 1993 that many of you will soon be receiving in your mailbox. While this show was a bit of an unexpected pick to be unveiled from the Vault, it features important moments in the history of Pearl Jam. As the 1993 tour was winding down, the band was looking towards the future with Vitalogy experimenting with two incredibly fresh songs for the time in Last Exit and Tremor Christ. While both songs were making only their second appearance on the live stage, you can get a sense of what the next stages were for the band - a unique rawness that encapsulated the magic of the first two albums, but also held a sense of maturity that was setting the landscape for the mid-90's era for the band. Another major moment, and possibly the reason for the decision to make this a vault, was that this was the fourth and final time that the Mamasan was performed in its entirety live. We listen to all 3 songs and discuss the importance of it's presence, especially Footsteps which is played sans harmonica and in a full electric ensemble. If you'd like to support the show and score some exclusive content for yourself, head on over to our Patreon and search Live On 4 Legs. With your contribution you'll receive episodes that aren't available on regular podcast platforms such as song Evolution shows, extra outtakes and in 2020 the beginning of the Bridge School series. You'll also get a chance to choose a show for us to cover and potentially join us for an episode to discuss it!

THE SEA-TOWN PODCAST: Interviewing Seattle's Business Leaders and Entrepreneurs
This week's guest is Erin Williamson, the owner of Pier Coffee, a Seattle based cold-brew coffee brewer and distributor. They brew, package and produce their coffee cold and can it for ready to drink applications at grocery stores. The big idea is that when your on the go and grabbing a quick lunch at the grocery store, you shouldn't have to sacrifice having access to gourmet cold-brew coffee... even if it's out of a cold-case. Highlights From This Episode: Erin owned a coffee shop for a long time and after leaving that, she started a nano-brewery out of her laundry room in her house. Pier Coffee is now in a nice large brewing space that they share with Odin Brewing in South Center. The process for brewing cold-brew coffee and gourmet beer are pretty similar, so they take turns using the brewing equipment. They also have a tap-room off of the brewing space where they feature both Odin beers, Pier Coffee's cold brew, along with some food. Erin's transition from from the hands on brewing to more the business operations side of things has been very eye-opening for her. She's having to continually give up that she knows whats best all the time... realizing that she needs to give up control of certain aspects of the business to other people who are better at that aspect of the business then she is, and that she is also there to learn from them and that they are ultimately more successful in the end. What do you love most about what you do? Love waking up in the morning, planning out her day and day never ends where she thinks its going to. There is always this joy of unexpected discovery everyday. What was most surprising or unexpected with opening your own business? The steps required to grow in something and then the amount of hustle and need to project a certain image of "success" before feeling like your business was actually at that point. What is Pier Coffee known for? That Pier Coffee really focuses on the technical aspect of cold-brew and the quality, coffee-sources, roasting & emphases on the brewing process. They also source all their coffee from woman owned coffee farms and cooperatives. Erin loves that they can bring together the technical and community aspect of making good coffee and running the business. Where do you see the future of Pier Coffee being? Developing a really strong regional Pacific Northwest Regional presence. With the emphases being on quality and playing up the relationship between really good coffee and beer - tap houses and brewers were traditionally communal meeting areas. A place to exchange ideas and fellowship. In modern times, coffee houses have taken on that role too. Pier Coffee / Odin Brewery's tap-house is a place were you can can get both... and a meal. What is your greatest strength? Curiosity. Erin reads about everything and is a big believe that we can fuel our own growth through knowledge. Erin is what she calls, an autodidact, meaning being self taught. What habit do you wish you had? To get up when her alarm first goest off. What are you passionate about? Too much... Before she was in the coffee world, Erin was a non-profit arts administrator. She tends to get passionate about non-profit volunteer opportunities. She is involved with Ventures Non-Profit (checkout Ep. 28 with Beto Yarce, the Executive Director of Ventures) teaching a weekly class for startup low-income and minority entrepreneurs. She is on the board of the non-profit co-op The Bridge School and just founded a new non-profit, Engender International, with the mission of supporting woman around the world who are in commodity markets, specifically in textile and agriculture. What has been your biggest challenge with running Pier Coffee? Discipline. About a year ago they had a product recall which was very difficult to work through and they had to stop and reflect on what they were really trying to do. The lesson learned was that in moments like that, don't get bogged down by focusing everything that needs to happen... just focus on the next step to move you in the right direction. And instead of thinking about the problem as this life shattering devastating moment, think about it as a puzzle and then try to fit the puzzle pieces in to put your picture back together. In the past, what was holding you back from becoming the entrepreneur you are today? Erin didn't know that she was one. Christian references the book the changed his business life around - The E-Myth Revisited: Why most small businesses don't work and what to do about it by Michael Gerber What is the best advice you have ever received? Think of the wave your riding in life as a sine-wave (as opposed to a triangle-wave) - on a sine-wave, from the top of your peak, you can see your next valley but you can also see another series of peaks and from the valley you can still see your way out. As opposed to a triangle-wave, were the ups & downs are so steep, you can't see your way out. This meaning that if you can keep your rollercoaster of emotion in check in business and life, you will be able to maintain a clearer head and perspective. What is a personal habit that contribute to your success? Smiling. What is the best advice you have ever received? What is your one book recommendation for our listeners?Catherine Gramm's Biography. She was the publisher of The Washington Post during the Watergate era. She was thrust into a position that she was not trained in but ended up thriving in that role... this happens in life sometimes, where being an outsider can give you unique insight and lead to success. Parting Guidance - The thing I talk to my clients (at Ventures) about all the time, is that as people our tendency is to focus on what is not going right or what we are not good at and then make plans to correct those but we often reflect on what is going right and what we do well. Spend time focusing on what has been successful and make plans to do more of that - Success reflections and success plans. Do this on a three year cycle because as humans,we tend to overestimate what we can do in 1 year but underestimate what we can do in 3 years. Back to the beer. Michael from #PDXBeerGeeks came on today's show to talk about beer, beer culture, beer festivals, beer, as well as beer. We also dealt with the Rolling Stones raping their fans, Hillsboro gets a new baseball team that sounds kind of beery, Bridge School gets shitty with Guns & Axl, American Horror Story and Walking Dead kill it on tv, we review Some Kind Of Wonderful, and we drink A LOT of good beer this week. A huge thanks to Mainbrew for their ongoing support. Be sure to listen next week and Douglas from Mainbrew comes back to talk about some more beer!
