Welcome back to Transmissions, we're so glad to have you tuned into this show. This week, a talk taped earlier this summer with Martin Courtney of Real Estate. Real Estate has been releasing great albums since the late 2000s. This year, they released their sixth LP, called Daniel. Produced in Nashville by Daniel Tashian, who produced Kacy Musgraves' breakthrough Golden Hour, it's a mellow, refined sound—deeply rooted in acoustic ‘90s rock textures and dappled with pedal steel. It's a record about growing up, and accepting all that comes with accumulated time spent here on earth. Reviewing the album for Aquarium Drunkard, Ian Grant of our Talkhouse labelmates The Jokermen podcast notes, “While critics have made a habit of harping on the (perceived) consistency of Real Estate's sound, less acknowledged is Courtney's evolution as a lyricist…approaching forty and a father several times over, his focus as a writer has grown far beyond the green aisles of his youth. Daniel finds the man in a contemplative state, concerned about the world and his place in it, questing after whatever degree of contentment any of us can hope for in a future of diminished horizons.” Aquarium Drunkard is supported by our subscribers. Head over and peruse our site, where you'll find nearly 20 years of playlists, recommendations, reviews, interviews, podcasts, essays, and more. With your support, here's to another decade. We have a special episode this week - we are sharing Sarah Jarosz's conversation on Basic Folk podcast! Sarah is a multi-Grammy winning mandolin player and songwriter who has collaborated with the likes of Chris Thile, the Live From Here house band, Bela Fleck, Daniel Tashian, Ruston Kelly, and Natalie Hemby. In this conversation, Sarah and hosts Cindy Howes and Lizzie No talk about her experience with confidence using the Dunning–Kruger effect, in which people with limited competence in a particular domain overestimate their abilities. AKA Fake it till you make, AKA Leap and the net will appear. She also talks about her parents' influence on her early musicality and how her mom is doing with her cancer remission. An overall theme of this conversation is that Sarah never lost sight of her goal: keeping it all about the music and don't let noise get in the way of your important work.More on Basic Folk:Basic Folk, honest conversations with folk musicians, features hosts Cindy Howes and the musician/known communist Lizzie No. The podcast approaches interviews with warmth, humor and insightful questions. Basic Folk fosters the folk community, but our definition of “folk” is extremely broad, so you'll hear interviews from Molly Tuttle, Ben Harper, The Lone Bellow and many more. You can listen to Basic Folk on The Bluegrass Situation Podcast Network, wherever you get podcasts or at BasicFolk.comGet more access and support this show by subscribing to The Other 22 Hours on Patreon, right here.Links:Sarah JaroszBasic FolkBasic Folk on IGLizzie No on IGSocial Media:The Other 22 Hours InstagramThe Other 22 Hours TikTokMichaela Anne InstagramAaron Shafer-Haiss InstagramAll music written, performed, and produced by Aaron Shafer-Haiss. Real Estate, a band with New Jersey roots but now spread out around the country, convened in Nashville to lay down their sixth LP, Daniel. A return to some of the early sounds of Real Estate -- uncomplicated, melody-forward, easy and breezy indie rock -- 'Daniel' showcases the songwriting of frontman Martin Courtney, who spoke with Celia about his vision for this full-length. Also reached to talk about the making of WNXP's Record of the Week was Daniel Tashian, the Nashville-based artist and producer who led Courtney and his bandmates through a quick, nine-day recording blitz in RCA Studio A on Music Row.
When Real Estate's fifth album The Main Thing was released to fairly mixed results, was it time for a reset? In a sense, yes. For band leader Martin Courtney, it was time to get back to songs. After all, without songs, bands are just jamming, right? He set the bar high too, inspired mostly by the 1992 R.E.M. classic Automatic For The People.Besides, you cannot call in a producer like Daniel Tashian without being able to play him songs of exceptionally high standard. For a start, Tashian produced Kacey Musgrave's modern classic Gold Hour, as well as writing a bunch of understated classics with his own band The Silver Seas. Consider then, that the batch of songs landing on the new Real Estate album Daniel were so good that Tashian (who co-writes with many of the artists he produces) only tinkered with them. And in doing so, hopefully gave each one a liberal sprinkling of his magic song fairy dust. “In terms of his input into the songs it was minimal. Daniel was more like a cheerleader in the studio. He's so fun - he'll be jumping around and hype you up - so it's much less daunting in the studio having him around. Graig Alvin mixed the record, and he's also won Grammy's too. We had high-powered people in the room”. Despite all this, Martin sounds surprised at the possibility of creating a classic album, although Daniel has the potential to be just that. What that means, in this day & age, is another thing entirely. Yet the band has been in classic album territory before, in 2014, with Atlas - songs from which brightened up daytime radio, found their way onto the biggest indie streaming playlists - and even landed that record on the Billboard top 40 and UK album charts. A decade on, with the music landscape much altered, the expectations for Daniel are less certain. In Courtney's own words “I know there is a good chance that it will come and go, like everything else these days”. But be assured that if you do become familiar with the record, it will pay you back dividends for a long time to come.So where does a band like Real Estate fit into the modern music industry landscape? Still in the game and getting better, the band's cultural caliber is steadily rising. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/
Sarah Jarosz is what happens when young women are taken seriously. A huge part of the mandolinist's story is that she had supportive male mentors and that has added to her confidence. We all know the age old story of “Young woman shows promise, gets exploited by the patriarchy and it affects her work.” We need to hear stories like this. Starting in her hometown of Wimberley, Texas, just 45 minutes outside of Austin - the live music capital of the world, Sarah found the mandolin at ten years old. Labeled a prodigy and thanks to the encouraging spirit of folk music, she found music mentorship with seasoned professionals like David Grisman, Ricky Scaggs, Tim O'Brien and Bela Fleck. After her time at The New England Conservatory of Music, she moved to New York and would go on to collaborate with people like Chris Thile in the Live From Here House Band and her trio I'm With Her, featuring Aoife O'Donovan and Sara Watkins and won four Grammys. After making the move to Nashville, on her latest album, the very impressive and sonically expansive Polaroid Lovers, Jarosz collaborated with producer Daniel Tashian, which originally was just a low-stakes co-writing project. The success of her first co-writing experience with Daniel led her to pursue other songwriting sessions with Ruston Kelly and Natalie Hemby. The collaboration found on the record has opened Sarah up to new sounds and new experiences. In our conversation, we talk about Sarah stepping into her own voice with confidence on this record and knowing her musical self enough at this point in her life. She describes her experience with confidence using the Dunning–Kruger effect, in which people with limited competence in a particular domain overestimate their abilities. AKA Fake it till you make, AKA Leap and the net will appear. She also talks about her parents' influence on her early musicality and how her mom is doing with her cancer remission. Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Mostly TreesMostly Trees is a 4-piece band from Minneapolis, known for their take on guitar driven rock that ranges from grunge to dream pop. Their new style is a stripped down version of their earlier work, realized after bonding over a modified version of the board game Sorry! Once they made up the rules, the possibilities were endless. With a heavy influence of guitar effects pedals, their new album 'Moon Dogs' showcases a diverse rangeof sounds and instruments. The album was recorded in Nashville, TN with the Grammy Award winning production team of Daniel Tashian and Craig Alvin.

The legendary composer and songwriter Burt Bacharach passed away last week at 94. Today we are re-running an interview Bruce Headlam did with Burt and Daniel Tashian, who released an EP together in 2020 called Blue Umbrella. Justin Richmond also checks in with Daniel Tashian to talk about Burt Bacharach's tremendous skill as a composer. Danial shares the tips he took away from working with Burt, and he talks about how they were collaborating on new music right up until the end. Episode 224: It's a double Dan special as I visit with two movers and shakers who've contributed perhaps more behind the scenes than most musicians of their stature. Daniel Tashian is a Nashville lifer who's worn all the hats - songwriter, artist, band-leader and producer. He won a Grammy for Kacey Musgraves's Golden Hour and collaborated with Burt Bacharach. Now he's co-written the classic country rock album Night After Night with Paul Kennerly. Then it's Dan Knobler, recently in-demand Americana producer for luminaries like Erin Rae, Rodney Crowell and Allison Russell. His new project is whimsical and gorgeous - a multi-artist album of great cover songs chosen by his four-year-old son. It inspired a great conversation about how we maintain our youthful love for music.
My guest today is Daniel Tashian is a Gammy-winning producer, musician, and songwriter who has produced for artists such as Kacey Musgraves, Tenille Townes, Jessie James Decker, A Girl Named Eddie, Trent Dabbs, Emily West, and Keelan Donovan. He has had several sync placements in hit TV shows and movies including the film Our Idiot Brother, Pretty Little Liars, Nashville, Reign, and Scorpion among others. His first #1 Country song was with “Hometown Girl” by Josh Turner co-written with Marc Beeson and Daniel co-produced Kacey Musgrave's critically acclaimed and CMA and Grammy nominated album Golden Hour & also co-wrote 7 of the album's 13 songs. He also has a band called The Silver Seas with Jason Lehning (episode 74) in 1999 doing very well in the U.K. including a gig on the Jules Holland Show. I had great fun recording with these guys a few times at my studio, and I'm happy to have Daniel back on the show to keep talking about songwriting and creating as much as we can in the time that we have. In 2019 I got a big kick out of Kacey Musgraves’ “Album Of The Year” Grammy acceptance speech for Golden Hour; it was so heartwarming to see a future country superstar acknowledge her trustworthy team, whose efforts took a record with little hype or radio recognition all the way to the top. Calling in from LA, Chris meets up on Zoom this week with 2x Grammy award-winner Ian Fitchuk! Ian's what you'd call a triple threat - a boundary-pushing writer, producer and multi-instrumentalist. You might recognize him as one of the minds behind Kacey Musgraves' critically acclaimed album, “Golden Hour”, alongside our S4 alum Daniel Tashian; but Ian's career stretches far beyond this. He moves flawlessly through a genre-bending range of artists, from mainstream country and Americana acts like Brett Eldredge and Maren Morris, to left of center pop and indie sensations such as LANY, MUNA and Phoebe Bridgers. Jump in for Chris and Ian's musings on everything from why having fun is one of the most important ingredients in art, to how moments of perceived failure have turned out to be integral to success. In January of 2019, Daniel Tashian won the coveted Album of the Year award at the Grammy’s for his work on the Kacey Musgraves Golden Hour album. In our latest Truetone Lounge interview, we sit down with the award-winning producer/songwriter/guitarist to talk about the album, and how he began collaborating with Musgraves. He also shares how he was inspired by seeing his father perform with Emmylou Harris and the Hot Band, and his journey as an artist, songwriter, and producer. Daniel also talks about the ephemeral nature of inspiration, his attempts at capturing it, and how sounds and tones influence him.
My guest today is Shawn Èverett, a Juno and Grammy-winning Canadian producer, engineer, previously a guest on episode RSR137. In that interview, we talked with Shawn about his background schooling and his production and mixing philosophies. He has worked with many great artists including Grammy-winning Alabama Shakes, Weezer, Margaret Glaspy, Pete Yorn, Warpaint, John Legend, The Killers, Julian Casablancas, and The Voidz, Kesha, Har Mar Superstar, Local Natives, and many many others. In 2019 he won his fifth Grammy for mixing Kacey Musgraves Golden Hour which included songwriting and production from Daniel Tashian and engineering from Craig Alvin both previous guests on the show as well. You can hear their episodes at RSR176 and RSR232. I’ll have these links in the show notes. I have also become a huge fan of Sound & Color by the Alabama Shakes which Shawn engineered and mixed winning a Grammy in 2015. I feel like this record has set the bar pretty high for my own mixes. La légende américaine du "songwriting", Burt Bacharach, enchante encore à 90 ans passés, associé au chanteur Daniel Tashian.
Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond
Burt Bacharach is a living legend. He's written hits sung by Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Elvis Costello, Dusty Springfield and so many more. With that kind of a resume, he doesn't need to still be working at 92. But he recently found a new muse in collaborator Daniel Tashian. Daniel just won Album of the Year at the Grammy's for co-writing and producing Kacey Musgrave's breakout, Golden Hour. Now he and Burt have teamed on 5 song EP, Blue Umbrella and have even more songs on the way soon. Burt and Daniel connected with Bruce over Skype to talk about their collaboration which started in-studio then migrated to file sharing after the pandemic hit. The legendary Burt Bacharach and his brilliant co-writer Daniel Tashian drop in for a conversation about their stunning new EP, Blue Umbrella, and life as songwriters in the middle of a pandemic. The pair explain how they've continued their collaboration remotely between Los Angeles and Nashville, and how they've drawn on Burt's vast experience as an arranger to bring the songs to life.
Daniel Tashian is a GRAMMY, CMA and ACM Award-winning musician renowned for his work on Kacey Musgraves’ ‘Golden Hour,’ wrote and recorded 8 original songs with his daughters Tigerlily, Tinkerbell and Matilda. Drawing inspiration from his own childhood with Sesame Street and Pink Panther, Tashian created the Mr. Moonlight character to help with his daughters’ bedtime anxiety. Mr. Moonlight “watches over” them as they fall asleep. Before the Stay-At-Home order, Tashian was spending a lot of time away from home. Quarantine gave the Tashian's family a chance to bond, so instead of diving into a new musical project of his own, he wanted to give the kids a chance to share their imagination. Check out his full song 'How Old Should I Be' at the end of the episode! Continue reading Episode #263 – Daniel Tashian on the site.

In this episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast we find host Michael Shields in conversation with Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, producer, and visual artist JT Daly. Daly previously fronted the Nashville-based band Paper Route and more recently co-produced K. Flay's wildly successful album Every Where Is Some Where, including the hit single "Blood in the Cut" (for which Daly received Grammy nominations for Best Rock Song and Best Engineered Album). Daly is onto his next project, a new band called The Voodoo Children who are releasing their debut album this spring entitled Instant Nostalgia. The Voodoo Children could be looked at as a collective, a team of talents that JT has worked with throughout his career. The phenomenally talented lineup includes his partner Jo Meredith (Sad Penny), Daniel Tashian (producer and co-writer with Kacey Musgraves), K.Flay, Bantug, Abby Wright, Angela Plake (Bandit), Oran Thornton, Josh Lippi, his longtime engineer Josh Lovell, and Gregg Alexander of the New Radicals. While The Voodoo Children certainly persist as the main focus of the interview, Michael and JT embark on a career spanning interview where they expound upon JT’s early influences, his solo album entitled Memory, the soundtrack he composed for ESPN’s 30 for 30 documentary film Chuck & Tito, and much, much more. Just before the world hit the fan, Jill Andrews and I sat down face-to-face to talk about her latest record and everything leading up to that point. From her criminal psychology studies and day job, surviving abusive relationships, life in The Everybodyfields, and taking a look at her songwriting from Thirties. Jill, in my opinion, has one of the most calming voices and one of the best albums of 2020. Produced by Lucas Morton and a string of music pros like Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk (Grammy award winning producers for Kacey Musgraves' Golden Hour), Todd Lomboardo (Instrumentalist on Golden Hour, Kacey Musgraves), and Peter Groenwald (of Hush Kids) to play on it. Thirties encapsulates her life and a decade long season of questions, looking back, and looking ahead. www.jillandrews.com Instagram-@jillandrewsmusic Thirties book and music can be found on Amazon

Niyaz Pirani and Clint Keaton on the digital ones and twos, providing you with music reviews and news! This week we celebrate the the release of Grammy award-winning best album Golden Hour by Kasey Musgraves a year ago. Don't let Musgraves previous work fool you, as Niyaz and Clint establish early on that Golden Hour is distinctly a pop record with country undertones. From the driving-down-the-highway-belting-out-notes-worthy "Butterflies," which is Niyaz's personal favorite and the crisp statement-making opener "Slow Burn," to the upbeat disco-infused, anthem "High Horse," which is Clint's favorite, Musgraves subtly inserts her country roots into a plethora of moods and genre-bending sounds. We conclude the episode with industry news including Lollapalooza 2019, Odesza and Big Wild on tour, and Chris Fehn departing Slipknot. My guest today is Daniel Tashian is a Gammy nominated producer, musician, and song writer who started early in his career with a deal at Elektra Records at 19 years old. He grew up in a musical family. Daniel’s father opened for the Beatles at Shea Stadium. Daniel did a record with T-Bone Burnett but it did not get traction. After his deal ended, Daniel went back to art school to study photography, but soon he was back into music again and started various musical projects: He played guitar on Patty Griffin's album "Flaming Red" He had an alt rock band called "The Umbrellas" that was very influenced by the Soft Boys. He then started a band called The Silver Seas with Jason Lehning (episode 74) in 1999. Their second album did well in the U.K. including a gig on the Jules Holland Show. Daniel had his first #1 Country song with “Hometown Girl” by Josh Turner co-written with Marc Beeson Daniel co-produced Kacey Musgrave’s critically acclaimed and CMA and Grammy nominated album Golden Hour & also co-wrote 7 of the album’s 13 songs. Brandon and Jason revisit The Big Yellow Dog office on Music Row to have a conversation with Daniel Tashian. Daniel is a singer, songwriter, artist, and producer based out of Nashville. It’s astounding to find out Daniel’s navigation through the music industry as a writer, and what’s even more shocking was his age of getting shopped around for a publishing deal. But Daniel is no newb in the music industry. Daniel’s father was in the infamous band The Remains. The guides and Daniel take a trip through Daniel’s childhood to figure out how he himself was influenced by his family and the musicians that were around his childhood. Fast forward to the present, Daniel has cuts with artists like Chris Lane, Charles Kelly, Lee Ann Womack, Matt Wertz, Eli Young Band, Logan Mize, Amy Stroup, Billy Currington, and Martina McBride. Josh Turners newest single, “Hometown Girl” was co-written by our survival expert. Not to mention his film and TV placements with shows like Breaking Bad, Private Practice, and Heart of Dixie to name a few. He recently even produced Trent Dabbs’ newest record, The Optimist. In this episode the guides tackle his experience with getting a publishing deal and the twists and turns of navigating what’s hot at that moment, how he approaches writing a song, and even how to write music to pitch. You also get a glimpse in what’s going on with the Silver Seas, Daniel’s project, and what is to come. Remember, that Tashian…Sounds Like Passion. Thanks as always to Fat Bottom Brewing. Thanks to Tom Hemby for supplying this weeks music.
