Rod Brind'Amour has authored one of the most unique careers in Carolinas sports history. In 2006, Brind'Amour played for the Carolina Hurricanes and captained the team that won the Hurricanes' first Stanley Cup. Now Brind'Amour is the coach of that very same team. And after years of “almosts,” Brind'Amour directed the Hurricanes to their second Stanley Cup win in June. Imagine if Luke Kuechly's Carolina Panthers had won that Super Bowl in 2015 and then Kuechly became the team's head coach and won another Super Bowl — that's what this was like. In our interview, conducted at the Hurricanes' practice arena, Brind'Amour, 56, told stories about quitting hockey as a kid and why he believes it was more satisfying to win the Stanley Cup as a coach in 2026 than it was as a player in 2006. Oilers.[00:06:20] Andersen's exit creates a major question in net because Brandon Bussi now moves from a successful supporting role into the unquestioned starting position.[00:06:45] Bussi performs exceptionally well during the regular season before stepping aside as Andersen starts Carolina's first 13 playoff games.[00:07:15] Neil and Vic discuss the psychological difference between serving as a backup and entering a season knowing that the crease belongs entirely to you.[00:07:45] Carolina must also determine whether Pyotr Kochetkov becomes Bussi's primary backup or whether prospect Bill shares the unconventional path that took him from working as an athletic trainer and strength coach at the high school level to USA Baseball and eventually the Carolina Hurricanes. He discusses the importance of earning opportunities, making yourself valuable, and continuing to put in the work even when the next step in your career isn't obvious. We also go inside the culture that has been built in Carolina, including the importance of trust and relationships with players, alignment with Rod Brind'Amour and the coaching staff, and why meaningful culture takes years of consistent work to develop. Bill shares some of the traditions behind that culture—including the story of the cinder block players had been pressing for years before learning its connection to lifting the Stanley Cup. The conversation also explores Bill's doctoral research into athlete monitoring and self-reported measures. We discuss athlete compliance, the challenge of turning collected information into meaningful action, and how data and sports science fit alongside communication, trust, and the human side of coaching. Finally, Bill reflects on reaching the top of the profession and winning the Stanley Cup—and the full-circle experience of bringing the Cup back to New Jersey and into the high school weight room where his strength and conditioning career began. It's a conversation about much more than sets and reps: earning your opportunities, building something that lasts, developing genuine relationships, using science with purpose, and showing up to do the work every day.
