Let your audience into a little secret: Your product will make their lives easier, save them time, and streamline their workflow. Leah says, “People want to do their jobs better, faster, smarter, more efficiently. So are we able to provide a hack or a tool that allows people to go and solve their pain point or solve the thing that's so annoying in their day to day business? It's like, is there a way to do this better?”Tap into the FOMO. Leverage your superfans with a large social audience to evangelize your brand and amplify a sense of FOMO, or likewise, inclusivity. Leah says, “It's like, ‘Oh, I see somebody with this and they look like me. So if they're using that, I should probably use that too,' or like, ‘We're similar because we both appreciate the same things and live this active lifestyle and want to be healthy. So if she has it, I should probably have it also.' Because we buy the same things. We have a similar mindset. We have the same goals. We have the same pain points. So people are drawn to this feeling of inclusivity.” Ian adds that Stanley also creates demand by releasing limited runs of their tumblers. He says, “The constrained nature of the supply and demand aspect is always interesting. Like, that there's a limited number and they would keep selling out. Everybody always wants something that's sold out.”Offer aesthetic options. It could be as simple as letting customers choose their color, or customizing what their product looks like. Ian says, “the colors [of the Stanley Quencher] are really cool, and they do 100 percent stand out. And I think there's just a great marketing lesson here about variety being the spice of life. Finding them and using those channels. Then you need to find a way to accelerate them. Once they're out there and they're doing their thing, the secondary piece is getting your customers in the same room as your prospects. That's a big thing for B2B marketing. Use your influencers, use your key customers, help accelerate their stories, let them tell it in an authentic way, and then put them in virtual rooms or physical rooms, in digital spaces with prospects so that they can then share their stories organically.” - Ian Faison*”We are all consumers by nature. But we can tell when we're being marketed to, and that's such a turnoff, especially to younger generations. So tell that story in a really authentic way, like in a case study or a customer success story, allowing the people to be like, ‘We didn't know what we were doing. In more recent history, they had to pivot to a new product even after they found what was supposedly working. Jan's reason is simple - the Total Addressable Market(TAM) was too small to fulfil his ambitions, so they started working on a model that would work across a variety of verticals. Celigo really built their platform by the book. Starting out with years of consulting experience to understand their market, then building a few platform iterations that were both scrapped and kept, finding product-market fit, increasing their TAM, and trying to solve larger problems as they scale. This approach has made them true experts of both their market and their product, and allowed them to scale while maintaining longevity in the market.Now they're focused on revamping their go-to-market strategy and making sure they're disciplined with targeting the right type of client. A very difficult but necessary step when scaling is figuring out which customers you've outgrown and letting go, as the drain that a customer who's no longer a great fit brings onto your team can significantly lower efficiency and morale.When asked about his leadership principles, Jan focuses on being fair and consistent - towards both his employees and customers. In this episode, Eric is joined by Jan Arendtsz, Founder & CEO of Celigo - an iPaaS platform that simplifies the integration of business applications and data sources in the enterprise.iPaaS stands for Integration Platform as a Service, which is a new term for an industry that's been around since the 90s. Their predecessor was the ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) model which was led by companies like Informatica before the cloud model became standard. Jan's path to entrepreneurship began with him working as a software engineer for a couple of years and quickly realizing that it's not his true calling. He chose to stick with it for a while to build a solid technical background, after which he joined a consulting firm to learn a bit more about the business side of running a software company. When he got to his late 20's, he had gathered enough experience to go out on his own and start a company.Although Jan got the idea for Celigo way back in 2004, it wasn't the first venture he pursued when he went out on his own. For about 5 years he ran a consultancy that focused on processes and integrations, and he managed to scale that business to 100+ employees before ultimately starting Celigo in January of 2011.At the beginning Celigo encountered a major roadblock - their platform was built to be operated by technically advanced users, effectively making their platform inaccessible for the average business user. Their first iteration wasn't up to par, so Jan made the tough decision to scrap the platform and start from scratch. In this episode of SaaS Connect by Cloud Software Association, Matt Graney, VP Product Management at Celigo, provides a presentation on why iPaaS is not enough to survive the explosion of Cloud apps, and how critical the integration user experience is becoming. The presentation includes: Consumerism of enterprise software has undergone a power shift due to freemium models, and the shift has led to a need for specialisation, leaving the iPaaS business with a lot of need for integration. With specialization has come an increase of apps. For example, SMBs that had three apps five years ago now have, on average, more than 20. Consumers need all the apps they use to connect, and they want the freedom to choose which apps they want, and how they are to be integrated. On top of that, they need simple interfaces from a consumer point of view, not from an IT point of view. Why iPaaS in the first place? The goal should be that integration be as simple and intuitive as the app itself. Customer experience is key because it's part of the purchasing decision. Pointers to improve the integration user experience: Communicate with the developer community through portals. APIs should be properly documented, and there should be a product manager for both APIs and integrations because integrations should be seen as a product. Make it easy to onboard customers. Integrations must be pre-built, and built on an iPaaS. The three things to keep in mind to survive the future of integration. As a young coder, Jan Arendtsz wasn't so interested in coding. He was much more interested in why the code should exist to begin with—what problem it was solving, what it was trying to accomplish. So he moved from the coder's cubicle over to the business side. As an early member of NetSuite, he recognized SaaS as the future, which may seem obvious now, but at the time this was a riskier proposition. “Looking back, you can say, of course you should have thought about that,” Jan says. “But that was a leap of faith to me.” After starting a consultant business, he realized his prescience was more profound than he could have realized. IT systems had become a spaghetti plate of SaaS solutions, and getting them all to work together was a major challenge for most businesses. So he started Celigo, a company that offers an integration platform as a service (iPaaS) to help companies connect all their SaaS solutions to create smoother automation.
