In any organization sometimes things will go wrong or just not work out. While in many cases this might be due to mistakes or errors, at other times it is due to professional misconduct – often leading to significant consequences for both the organization and the individuals concerned. Will Harvey is a Professor of Leadership at Melbourne Business School in Australia and is currently the Director of the Social Purpose Centre, as well as being an International Research Fellow at the Oxford University Centre for Corporate Reputation. 'Marketers are buying this': Pitfalls and ‘lies' to avoid on junk user data, clean room matching, MMM, incrementality tests - and B2B tech: Melbourne Business School Associate Professor Nico Neumann

Mi3 Audio Edition

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 3, 2025 46:27

Nico Neumann is deep in the weeds on digital marketing attribution, market mix modelling [MMM] and incrementality testing – likewise the dangers of narrow audience targeting and junk user data - the latter a $20bn market in the US alone. The Melbourne Business School Associate Professor in 2019 published research proving that closing your eyes and randomly selecting male or female audience targets was more accurate than the data brokers and DSPs many advertisers buy from. Neumann claims a senior data broker admitted to him privately that they knew their data was crap, “but who cares? Marketers are buying this”. (Like Arielle Garcia, UM’s former US privacy lead who last year told Mi3 she had accessed her data profile from multiple third party brokers with laughable results, Neumann has downloaded his own, “and it’s hilarious”. You should do the same - we’ve got a URL in our Mi3 feature to test your profile segments). Neumann batted away claims his B2C audience studies were too broad and challenged widely held assumptions that niche segments and B2B were where precision targeting of online users actually works. Last year he ran tests with IT giant HP - a paper is coming - that sharply contests most B2B marketing plans and particularly so for tech sector practitioners. “No matter what we used, it was either equal to random targeting, or even worse,” says Neumann. First party data is better, per Neumann, but there are caveats, particularly around clean rooms and matches that can be bogus. He advises marketers to upload made up email addresses and see what they get back - hashed user 'match rates’ may not be what they seem. His advice: stick with the first and second party data you can trust, but even then, don’t assume targeting will deliver better bang for buck. “I would even take a step back and ask, do you need to target that narrowly? There are very few cases where it makes sense … Why do you even need to exclude people and increase the cost, instead of just letting the content or message do that?” Neumann sees the explosion of market mix modelling and measurement approaches as “a good thing”. But there are market rumblings that the big platforms pushing MMMs risk skewing towards inherent model biases. Either way, Neumann’s working on a project to compare how all the main MMMs hitting the market actually perform. He urges marketers to question all models – and his advice for those emerging from business schools is the same as for seasoned CMOs: Hone fundamentals that will last a lifetime; don’t overspecialise in trends and fads. “Ask hard questions – and just test stuff yourself.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dr. Laura welcomes Soren Kaplan, bestselling author, founder of Praxie.com, and Columnist for Inc. Magazine, to talk about his latest book, “Experiential Intelligence”. Soren talks about the impetus behind writing his book and defines Experiential Intelligence, or XQ, as a key factor in the road to success, alongside Intelligence Quotient (IQ) and Emotional Intelligence (EQ).Soren shares examples of experiences from his childhood that have shaped into skills he uses today to explain XQ. Experiential Intelligence, or XQ, draws on experiential elements that give us understanding and abilities beyond what simple intelligence and resumés can explain. How we have lived matters to who we are. Dr. Laura and Soren Kaplan dive into elements of his book, explore how people learn and grow, and detail how leaders and managers can learn to assess XQ when hiring. Soren's insights offer a way to look at the whole of a person and what they bring to the table, as well as opening each of us up to discover skills and attributes developed from our experience to aid us moving forward.“Usually we're talking about different assets other than emotions and IQ. We're talking about different attributes that we develop, usually based on our experience. And you and I were just talking about those experiences that we had in our home life that gave us practice doing certain things that give us these higher order abilities to navigate uncertainty or be resilient or understand group norms that exist underneath the surface of teams, whatever those things might be. And that's what I mean by experiential intelligence. It's your mindsets, your abilities, and really the know-how and skills that you develop over time through experience.” Soren KaplanAbout Soren Kaplan:Soren Kaplan is a Wall Street Journal bestselling and award-winning author, a Columnist for Inc. In the last year, the speed at which artificial intelligence has advanced has surprised almost everyone. In this conversation, we hear how the analytical framework that he and his colleagues developed helps to sort through the hype. He argues artificial intelligence is best thought of as a prediction machine. You'll hear why he's optimistic that artificial intelligence will be able to help people remove some of the drudgery from some jobs, but at this time, doesn't seem likely to take over full jobs. He'll share how understanding artificial intelligence as an advance in predictive statistics will help leaders assess how artificial intelligence may or may not be useful. About our guest:Joshua Gans is a Professor of Strategic Management and holder of the Jeffrey S. In this episode, we interviewed Hugh Williams, the Co-Founder of CS in Schools, an Australian charity that is creating sustainable change in digital technology education. In 2022, CS in Schools worked with 72 schools and 250 teachers to deliver world-class coding classes to over 30,000 students in Australia. They have some lofty ambitions to give every secondary school student in Australia the opportunity to learn digital technology. And all that is provided at zero cost to schools. Hugh is also a Professor at the Melbourne Business School, an Adjunct Professor at RMIT University, and a board member of the State Library Victoria and Janet Clarke Hall. He is a company advisor and investor, and was formerly a vice president at Google and has also held senior roles at eBay and Microsoft. Through his advisory practice, he has worked with many companies including Doordash, Moonpig, ASOS, and Ocado. Hugh will touch on topics such as: How choosing Computer Science in university totally changed his life. Making sure students experience the opportunities available in digital technology. Barriers to providing quality digital technology learning experiences as highlighted by school leaders. Channeling his inner “Elon Musk' when starting CS in Schools and how he managed to get the education industry's trust. Skills that don't come naturally to him in moments of vulnerability. Building his unique ambition and confidence over time and why more Australians need to be more audacious. Pre-conditions a school needs to have to ensure that their CS in Schools program is successful. Navigating the adoption challenges that come with their program being offered to schools for free. Support they're getting from industry partners and donors. CS in Schools in the next 5 years and how they will impact Australian schools. Hugh highlights audacity, passion, and a strategic mindset as the core pillars of his success and emphasizes that Australians have to adopt the same if Australia is going to emerge as a global player in developing innovative technologies. In his reflection on leadership, he says a leader should look at their team as the people they work side by side with, not as line reports. “You should focus all you efforts on how you can influence them to be better because the more successful you make them, the more successful you and your organization as a whole will be”, he says. Fran loves sales! She also knows that for many people, “sales” is a dirty word because it's been disconnected from this key relationship that you have with your customers. Fran has completed a Graduate Certificate in Change Management and an MBA from Melbourne Business School. Coupled with my hands-on sales and business experience, she has a toolbox of techniques that she draws on to help businesses better understand themselves and their customers. Fran Pratt created Metisan to bridge that gap, to demystify the sales process and sales people so that anyone can improve their sales performance. Her vision is a world where business owners both understand and respect their clients, understand how to foster this relationship through the art of sales.  She has a young family and bonus kids from her husband, and so also knows what it is to juggle personal and business priorities – always open and curious to learn how to try new things and do life differently. Transformation needs to happen within Higher Education to ensure that there isn't  a broadening gap with market requirements. Higher Education needs to also review its own business models to keep up with the pace.  The ‘disruptors' of the traditional education model, such as tech boot camps, are offering training that is more practical and project-based. Consider ways to work together with these boot camps that provide such technical skills.Organisations and universities can leverage the future skills in workplaces by working together. Even though they operate very differently, hence the rise of third-parties like boot camps, it's important to be patient, clear on each other's expectations and establish a partnership of learning.Segmented time stamps:[01:56] Why Higher Education is rethinking the way its working with industries[04:30] Working with the ‘disruptors' of Higher Education[07:27] Bootcamps versus university short courses[15:00] Advice for organisations who are considering working with universities[17:54] Innovation labs at universities[20:15] Exploring the different learning styles across programs[23:01] How would Warren like to see the development of future skills in workplacesLinks from the podcast  Connect with Warren Kennard on LinkedIn
