THE GREATEST WEAPON AGAINST STRESS IS OUR ABILITY TO CHOOSE ONE THOUGHT OVER ANOTHER. William James We’ve all had those moments where the walls feel as though they’re closing in on us. We get short of breath, the beads of sweat start to collect on our forehead, and suddenly the room is on a spin cycle. If this has happened to you before, you know how quickly the feeling comes. Even further, you probably know how hard it can be to shake that feeling as well. Unfortunately, so many people find themselves in a highly stressed state for an extended period of time. The results can be catastrophic! Our brains, though amazing, are truly archaic. The fear of missing a work deadline or constantly trying to balance the budget and make bill payments gets registered the same as us being attacked by a saber-tooth tiger. Our bodies were not made to remain under this type of stress for an extended period of time or repeated on a daily basis. Because of this, the stress in our daily lives has the potential to really take a toll on our bodies and on our immune system. My guest today Chantel Soumis is a brand sorceress, sales and marketing magician, and an international keynote speaker. Her positive spirit and bubbly personality are sure to light up a room. (Let alone a zoom call!) What makes this amazing woman even more remarkable is her story of perseverance and drive. Drowning in stress looking for work, trying to feed a newborn, and struggling to keep the heat on would lead to a flare-up of Multiple Sclerosis. Losing your sight and the ability to walk is a scary and demoralizing experience at any age. For Chantel, looking at a long life ahead of her, 25 was too soon to call it quits. Hop into today’s episode and find out how Chantel was able to let go of that stress, focus on gratitude, and lean into the network of support around her. Regaining her sight in one eye and being humbled by the mobility challenges are just a few of the countless blessings she acknowledges every day. In this episode we discuss: Turning a negative into a positive Never giving up Focusing on gratitude Setting boundaries Leaning into your support group Identifying your greatest weakness and more! And so this bubble refused to pop. Chantel Soumis looks back at her younger self. Alone. No friends. A life filled with anxiety and depression. Even with multiple suicide attempts, dying was just not an option. Hitting rock bottom, Multiple Sclerosis took her vision, ability to walk and hear effectively after giving birth. Chronic depression carried on until she discovered her purpose. Being a mom. Neuroscience, diet, quantum physics and energy manipulation changed her world. Her old self disappeared. We talked about the girl she was from years ago, feeling so sad for her for having zero self-love and filled with self-hate, authentic connection, sexual attacks, shame, sexual advances from higher-up executives in order to win business, law of attraction, rebuilding a life, disruption, energy depletion and spoonies, fascination with magic and being yourself, taking control of your thoughts, self-worth and loving yourself. When Arianna Huffington contacts you in 2020, when you are on the Top 15 Best People to Follow on Linkedin for 2020 along with Bill Gates, Richard Branson, Simon Sinek, Jeff Weiner, Kevin O’Leary, and when you make the Brava Magazine 2020 Women to Watch, this is when you believe in magic. Episode 155 The Power of Flaws - Interview with Chantel Soumis  Augusten Burroughts said, “I, myself, am made entirely of flaws, stitched together with good intentions.” I love this quote because it is a simple statement of our beautiful individuality and the normalness of our unique qualities. Whether we would really actually call these things flaws, sometimes when they don’t align with societal expectation, they feel like flaws. For example, today’s guest is an advocate for the differently-abled community. Her own diagnosis of debilitating multiple sclerosis and her inability to get work after this diagnosis spurred her to fight for a broader more open view of our differences, handicaps, and challenges. Stay tuned for a discussion on the power of individuality and how flaws make us unique, beautiful and indispensable. Chantel Soumis a top LinkedIn Creator with over 30k organic followers in one year. Chantel is also the Founder and Creative Director of Stardust Creative LLC, a brand agency focused on embracing differences through personal and corporate branding. She’s spoken at VidCon as one of the first LinkedIn video creators as well as at international conferences in LA, London, Dallas, and more. As an advocate for the differently-abled community, Chantel spreads awareness, hope, and inspiration to those around the world fighting for acceptance by sharing the hidden struggles of differently-abled community. By administering an attitude of gratitude, Chantel has overcome severe obstacles and spends a substantial portion of her time coaching others to accept and believe in themselves, and to treat one another with dignity and value, recognizing we are all brothers and sisters of the human race. Tune into the audio program to hear Chantel's story and our discussion on how our flaws make us unique and beautiful. Sarah Vowell, in her book, Take the Cannoli, said, “We are flawed creatures, all of us. Some of us think that means we should fix our flaws. But get rid of my flaws and there would be no one left.” In an earlier episode, I shared an insight I gained at a conference this past year – it was that the things I had often acknowledged as flaws within myself were actually exactly who and how I was supposed to be to do what I came her to do. It was a new idea and it was fresh and full of self-acceptance. I am a firm believer in the beauty of the diverse and varied. It is these colors and textures in each of us that make us who we are and help us do what we want and need to do. Your challenge this week is to take one of those things you feel is a flaw about you and to reframe it. Find a statement that celebrates your differences – an affirmation that starts to help you see that supposed flaw as something that is actually helping you be who you need to be and do what you need to do. Embrace and love your own quirky self, whatever that looks like. And remember, most people are very unaware of others flaws, they are too worried about their own. Let any self-criticism go and start with self-acceptance. Don’t forget to use the Love Your Story website – all 150+episodes are available to listen to and share. You can buy your love your story t-shirts, or get the link for my book: LIFE Living Intentional and Fearless Everyday – the 21 LIFE connection challenges. This is Episode 8 of the VulnerABLE Podcast with Chantel Soumis!Disclaimer: Her dog Red decided he wanted to get in on the interview as well, so if you hear growling it was just him wanting his moment of fame.Growing up she’d struggle with a learning disability, and being the only daughter in a house full of boys. But that was nothing compared to what would happen later on in life. From being molested, to an abusive relationship that almost took her life, and then an incurable disease that would bring her to some of her lowest lows. Her diagnosis of multiple sclerosis would lead to her living life without sight, and sometimes barely being able to walk. It would not only affect her career, but also life at home especially when she brought a little boy of her own into the world. Just when she began to think life wasn’t even worth living, she made the choice to find a way out. Through her discoveries in learning about neurology, changing her diet and deciding to live life in the most positive way possible she now makes the best of every single day and situation. Bubbly is an understatement when it comes to her personality, and I’m sure you’ll see what I mean as this episode progress. She now speaks globally, has joined multiple organizations that help the differently abled find their voice, and does everything she can to advocate for the differently abled community. I just wrapped up the Agent Rise Summit and my goal was to help agents find clarity—simplify your business to amplify your results. I wanted to give you a short overview of how the summit went, what we unpacked, and give you some key takeaways. Outline of this great episode [0:30] Agent Rise Summit Recap [5:05] Clarify, Simplify, and Amplify [6:30] Shut off the apps in your background [7:00] The 7 gears that need to work together [8:00] Write a letter to yourself [9:00] Confidence is a muscle [10:45] There are #NoWrongAnswers [13:20] The power of list-building [14:35] Social media and engagement [17:00] The power of LinkedIn [20:30] Where will the summit go next? Confidence is a Muscle Lisa Robb, of Raining Glitter Coaching, was the first guest speaker we had the opportunity to hear from. She spoke on the topic of confidence. So many agents leave the business because they lack confidence in themselves and their ability to do their job. So many of us strive to be the best at everything we do, and when we fall short, it can break us. Lisa poignantly stated, “You don’t have to be the strongest and the fastest, you just have to be strong and fast”.  Confidence is a muscle, and just like weight training, it takes consistency and training to grow that muscle. You aren’t born with it. You are capable of building up your confidence. By focusing on the abilities that you can grow you can become strong and fast. You don’t have to be the best at everything to succeed.  #NoWrongAnswers This conference was meant to bring clarity to agents. To help you clarify what goals you want to reach, learn to simplify the process to amplify your success as well as to just have fun and grow with each other. My buddy Dustin Brohm—after delivering a great talk retargeting ads—brought us some comedic relief.  For his Q & A slide, he meant to imply that there are no dumb questions. But he wrote, “there are no wrong answers”. Let’s just say no one is letting that go soon, and it sparked a hashtag movement—#NoWrongAnswers. But wait, there’s more! There may even be some apparel coming out soon. Stay tuned.  Social Media: one and done?  Jerry Potter spoke on the topic of engagement and social media. He said something that left us all questioning if we had heard correctly: focus on one social media platform to master. He truly believes that if you focus your time and energy on mastering one platform you’ll see results. Think about it. What would it look like if you did just focus on one platform?  I get the most traffic and engagement from LinkedIn. If I solely focused on that, how would it impact my business? He gave us all some food for thought, especially because it’s so easy to over diversify instead of simplifying.  The Power of LinkedIn I formed a panel that consisted of Chantel Soumis, Jared Wiese, and Carrie Bohlig to speak about LinkedIn. When you think of social media, your mind probably doesn’t jump to LinkedIn. It hasn’t always been viewed as the powerhouse that is. But when you Google a name or person, what do you usually get at the top of the search results? LinkedIn.  LinkedIn is well optimized so that it comes up in the search results.  So it’s time to start taking advantage of that. Beef up your LinkedIn profile to make it pop. Pour into the community with videos and resources. Make it speak to people so that they will go check out your website or reach out to you. Don’t miss out on the opportunity that it gives you! Chantel Soumis is a Brand Soceress, Differently-Abled Advocate, and LinkedinLocal Host who is obsessed with marketing. Her average day is far from vanilla and includes: mastering personal brands, managing numerous projects with partners, and participating in professional speaking opportunities at events across the nation. She is a wife, mother, owner of two large dogs, and easily one of the most cheerful individuals I’ve ever had the pleasure to speak with. What makes this so remarkable are the ongoing health challenges Chantel faces. Three months after the birth of her son, and at a time when she was the family breadwinner, Chantel was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. The stress of the diagnosis lead to the temporary loss of sight in both eyes, much reduced hearing, and a stint in hospital. In this episode, Chantel talks about hitting rock bottom and the journey that has allowed her to embrace the attitude of gratitude.
