We casually mention some positive and some negative aspects of AI, like ChaptGPT and NotebookLM, for culture and for the Christ's Church.

Artificial intelligence was inarguably the biggest newsmaker in the tech industry this year. Whether it was ChaptGPT writing term papers, AI-generated Drake hits, or the board shakeup at OpenAI, the topic permeated the public consciousness and left people feeling varying levels of excitement and absolute terror about how this technology will shape our future. Generative AI seems poised to alter the direction of humanity, but it's up to the people to figure out exactly how it's going to do that. This week on Gadget Lab, we're sharing a very special session from the recent LiveWIRED event celebrating WIRED's 30th anniversary. Onstage, WIRED editor-at-large Steven Levy interviews renowned AI scientist Fei-Fei Li and LinkedIn cofounder and former OpenAI board member Reid Hoffman about all the chaos at OpenAI and what generative AI will look like in the future.Show Notes:Read Steven's story about what OpenAI really wants. One of the most talked about topics in society today is artificial intelligence. AI has been in a sprint season recently as we hear about advancements in language models like ChaptGPT and image generators like Dall-E. Many people have ideas of what AI could be from movies like The Terminator, Blade Runner – even the new Mission Impossible movie, but what is really happening in the AI space? And how should Christians think about the future of Artificial Intelligence? In today's episode, Saddleback Church Content Development Pastor Jason Wieland talks with David Brenner. David was a lawyer for 35 years before serving as the Board Chair of AI and Faith, an organization centered around equipping and encouraging people of faith to bring time-tested, faith-based values and wisdom to the ethical AI conversation. David and Jason talk about what is currently happening in the field of AI, how we should think about morality and ethics related to AI, and where he sees AI going in the near future and what you can do about it. On today's show, we have Nancy East, a retired veterinarian who is also an avid and accomplished hiker. Nancy is the perfect person to talk about dogs on the trail from a vet's perspective. As somebody who know's literally zero on the subject, I turned to my good buddy, ChaptGPT, to help me out with my questions that seemed to cover the subject pretty well. You can find more about Nancy's rich hiking life and hiking achievements by visiting her website at https://www.hopeandfeathertravels.com/ We also catch up with two of our still-running Mighty Blue class of 2023 team. Steve Nota and Joanne Flagg have been bang in the middle of the horrendous weather the New England states have been experiencing this week. I also added a short piece about my son, Rob, pictured below. If you'd like to find out more about "Then The Hail Came," check out George's website at https://georgesteffanos.webador.com/ . I've got an awesome story to tell.” You're the person we need to hear from. If you'd like to be interviewed on the podcast, just register as a guest on the link below, and I'll be in touch. Dear Friends and Family,When I posed the question, “What is the definition of freedom?” to ChaptGPT, my ChatBox app responded with the following: “Freedom is the state of being able to act, speak, or think without being restrained by external forces or influences….” A bit startling! But that was the opening line. What is true freedom? How do we know? Do teens and young adults in the US feel free today? When you look at statistics across the board, the numbers indicate that many do not feel like they are experiencing true freedom - young and old alike. I invite you to join me this weekend, when Elders Eric Closs, Brian Deyaert, and I change things up. We will deliver a three-part message on “True Freedom,” with each segment linked by worship through praise.

The technology revolution is coming! At least...we think so. New tools like ChaptGPT have the capacity to radically change the landscape of society, and many experts suggest we begin to educate ourselves on what's ahead and we begin to ask ourselves some critical questions about what it means to be human.
Is Microsoft paving the way for an AI-controlled future? In this video, we examine how Microsoft's dismantling of its AI ethics team could spell disaster for humanity. With tech giants having unprecedented power over our lives, it's no wonder experts are calling Microsoft's move a dangerous step in the wrong direction. From SCP to GDPR and beyond, learn how these changes could cause irreparable damage to our society. We've spoken about how ChatGPT can RUIN your integrity; well, it is stating that it is only going to get A LOT worse. This reminds me of the band Queen who made sure everyone who listened knew that what you were hearing was from a guitar, a piano, bass, drums and vocals. Their guitarist Brian May wanted people to know that the "outside the box" sounds were indeed his guitar. What does this have to do with Podcasting? A podcast hosting company today put out a blog post explaining how "Podcasting had a discoverability issue in the 90's..." I bet it did as podcasting didn't really exist until 2004 (the technology existed around 2000 when Dave Winer and Adam Curry merged RSS and an enclosure tag). So do I believe anything from this host? Not anymore. They hired a robot. I'm Not Anti ChatGPT I've used ChaptGPT to "brainstorm" a little or create a summary of an episode. For me (someone who doesn't have a hard time writing or coming up with content), it takes just as much time to rewrite a ChatGPT penned summary as it would to write it myself. But chatgpt is going to get better, and I see this as the first drop of water from a giant flood that is going to drown us all in mediocre, long content that doesn't have any real takeaways. So, in the same way that Queen had a "No Synths" line on their early albums, I may start putting "No AI Was Used During the Making of This Episode." Why Are My Stat Numbers So Different? When you look at your download numbers from your media host like Libsyn Captivate, Buzzsprout, Blubrry, etc (see free course that compares them), and then look at your number in Podcasts Connect from Apple or Spotify for Podcasters, you will see where your numbers are much lower. Why? When you look at your numbers in your media host, you are seeing the activity from ALL the apps. When you login to Apple's dashboard, you are only seeing activity from the Apple Podcasts app. Likewise, Spotify's numbers will only show Spotify App listens/downloads. In those portals, you get additional stats like how far people listen, the number of followers, and how far people have listened. So to get the big picture, use your media host's numbers and to see how far people listen use the different app portals. READY TO START YOUR PODCAST? Today's show begins with discussion of several reports issued this past week: first, evidence by the Wall St. Journal that the 11m open jobs reported by the US Labor Dept's ‘JOLT' statistic may be wrong; second, why widespread media reports that the banking crisis is now stabilized are wrong; and, third, why weekly unemployment benefit claims per a Bloomberg News report represent only 25% of workers actually newly unemployed each week. Dr Rasmus then discusses a fourth report this past week by Goldman Sachs bank research indicating that up to 300 million jobs will be negatively impacted (lost jobs or hours of work reduced) as a result of the accelerating implementation of Artificial Intelligence by businesses. Rasmus explains fundamentally what AI is, its enabling technologies, and how AI will destroy millions of simple decision making jobs by eliminating many occupations or sharply reducing hours of work in those occupations. Rasmus reports 1300 tech experts this past week (including Musk) issued a written warning calling for a moratorium on AI and ChaptGPT. But AI is too profitable and the AI tech train has left the station. The show concludes with discussing how AI is critical for advanced military weaponry and is much of the basis of US attack on China's tech industry today

Today on the show, Steven and Shaun discuss some of the big news stories coming out of CSUN's big assistive technology conference taking place in California. There's lots of excitement around the announcement from Orbit Research, who have partnered with AccesMind, to produce a new type of computer for blind people with a QWERTY keyboard and 40-cell Braille display built in. It's called the Optima and is completely configurable before and after purchase. It's likely to be Steven's next computer but will it be his last? Also, there's even more excitement around ChatGPT than usual following Open AI's announcement of the upgrade to version 4, which lets users scan images and get results from them. For example, being able to take a picture of the contents of your fridge and then have Open AI offer you a recipe of what you could make with those contents. The blind community is equally excited as Open AI has partnered with the popular app Be My Eyes to create a new Virtual Assistant in the app, allowing you to check the colour and design of a piece of clothing, up to searching a menu for specific things. And they're not alone. Envision AI is also showing off at CSUN this year their new feature upgrade coming soon that will embed ChaptGPT capabilities into their smart glasses. It's roundtable time! In February's roundtable, Eyvonne joins Tom and Russ to talk about Network as a Service, innovation, and marketing. Then we jump into the topic of the year at this point—ChaptGPT. Finally, we talk about proposals to eliminate noncompete agreements in the United States. What would this mean? Would it be better for tech, or worse? As always, you can listen to the show on just about any podcatcher, you can listen right here, or you can download the show to listen later.
