Originally from Philadelphia, David attended that city's “Fame” high school, Creative And Performing Arts, where his classmates included QuestLove and Boyz II Men. He then graduated from Parsons School of Design in New York, and worked as a graphic designer for ad agencies, designed book covers, movie posters, and indie film titles. He impulsively moved to Los Angeles in 2000 and became a stand-up comic for a while, performing at The Improv, The Vancouver Comedy Festival, and in sketches on “The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson” and “The Showbiz Show with David Spade”. But he tired of comedy clubs after a few years and focused on writing instead. In 2006, his “Will & Grace” spec made it to the semi-finals of the Warner Bros. Comedy Workshop. Switching to drama, he optioned the book “Minamata” (and the life rights of the author), about the experiences of journalist W. Eugene Smith photographing mercury poisoning victims in Japan. He wrote the screenplay in six weeks, and it got him a literary manager. Then Johnny Depp's company came on board to produce with Depp himself as the star. “Minamata” premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2020 and is now an Oscar favorite, streaming on HULU, Amazon Prime, and iTunes. It also stars Bill Nighy, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano. His follow up, DREAMERS (based on the book “John Lennon Vs. The US”), is about John Lennon's immigration battle with the Nixon administration which legally set the stage (many years later) for DACA/The Dream Act. David was recently hired by the director of “Minamata”, Andrew Levitas, to rewrite a script about the two brothers who owned Adidas and Puma and who battled each other for decades. That project, “Adidas V Puma”, is currently out to actors and mentioned in “The Hollywood Reporter” in early March 2021. https://scriptanatomy.com/david-kessler/ @EvrythngGldnBks Connect with your host Kaia Alexander: https://entertainmentbusinessleague.com/ https://twitter.com/thisiskaia  Produced by Stuart W. Bill HIcks was an American stand-up comedian, social critic, satirist, and musician. His material—encompassing a wide range of social issues including religion, politics, and philosophy—was controversial and often steeped in dark comedy. At the age of 16, while still in high school, Hicks began performing at the Comedy Workshop in Houston, Texas. During the 1980s, he toured the U.S. extensively and made a number of high-profile television appearances, but it was in the UK that he amassed a significant fan base, filling large venues during his 1991 tour. He also achieved some recognition as a guitarist and songwriter. Hicks died of pancreatic cancer on February 26, 1994, at the age of 32. In subsequent years, his work gained significant acclaim in creative circles—particularly after a series of posthumous album releases—and he developed a substantial cult following.  In keeping with the way his career unfolded, in 2007, he was No. 6 on Channel 4's (UK)  list of the "100 Greatest Stand-Up Comics", and rose to No. 4 on the 2010 list.  Here in the US, in 2017, Rolling Stone magazine ranked him No. 13 on its list of the 50 best stand-up comics of all time. David L. Savage grew up as an Air Force brat in West Texas with a deep and rich scouting background beginning in Cub Scouts, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, and earning the bronze, silver and gold palms, then establishing and leading a high adventure Explorer Post before heading to Texas A&M University to study engineering.  The summer after graduating from Texas A&M, he worked as a backpacking guide, or Ranger, at Philmont Scout Ranch and Explorer Base in Cimarron, New Mexico. David has a passion for history and geopolitics, which he has enriched through global job-related travel and extensive reading.  He and his wife, Kimberly, have been married for eighteen years and live in Katy, Texas. They blended their families and raised four children, now grown. He has written hundreds of poems and was the official Roaster-in-Chief at many company promotion and retirement events, all in verse.  His rich sense of humor has been displayed as an amateur at the Comedy Workshop in Houston and winning the Star Search contest in Chicago back in the late eighties.  He also was the U.S. Regional Winner of the Tall Tales Contest for Toastmasters International in that same time period. David has been a lifelong backpacker and outdoorsman and has been blessed to have a group of five older advisors who, along with David, call themselves “The Sixpack.”  They have backpacked for twenty-five years together to provide some of the rich and humorous stories he shares throughout his memoir, The Savage Path. Er hatte sie alle …bis auf Harald Schmidt, Stefan Raab und Hape Kerkeling. Er weiß, wie die Comedyszene Deutschlands funktioniert und kennt die Geheimnisse der Stars. Ever wondered what comedians and mental health have in common? Is it ever appropriate to make jokes at a funeral? And what does it look like to find humor in dark times? Our guests this week answer these questions and more as we discover the importance of humor and how it affects our mental health. In this week’s episode, my co-host and President of Positive Recovery Centers, Julie DeNofa, and I speak with comedians, Andy Huggins and Mike Peterson. Andy Huggins is a graduate of both The Comedy Store in Los Angeles and Houston’s renowned Comedy Workshop. Andy has worked with acts ranging from Ray Charles, Billy Gardell, Jeff Foxworthy to Dick Gregory. He has played comedy clubs, jazz clubs, corporate gigs, AA conventions, and has entertained our troops stationed in Japan. In the mid-1980s he was a member of The Texas Outlaw Comics whose legendary performances are still celebrated today. Andy also appears in the acclaimed documentary ‘American: The Bill Hicks Story’. He has written for Bill Hicks, Jay Leno, and Billy Crystal at The Academy Awards. Andy is one of the most sought-after comedians in Texas and a comedy staple since 1981. Last year he had an outstanding appearance on America’s Got Talent. Andy turned sixty sometime in his early thirties. At long, happy last, age, attitude, and comedy has come together at the same time. Mike Peterson is a retired Sergeant from the City of West University Police Department in Houston after 20 years of service. Prior to that Mike spent 3 years in the U.S. Army Military Police. Mike has been performing standup comedy for 21 years. He has appeared on ABC, The View and was a finalist in Ed McMahon’s Next Big Star contest as well as a past finalist in Houston’s Funniest Comedian contest. Mike has shared the stage with such luminaries as Jay Leno, Michael Winslow, Frank Caliendo and Anjelah Johnson, Kathleen Madigan, and Richard Lewis to name a few. Mike has also opened for Grammy award legend Glen Campbell and has had the honor of traveling overseas to Iraq and Kuwait twice to perform for our U.S. military troops. Mike also performs at comedy clubs, casinos, colleges, corporate events including police banquets. Join us this week as we dive into how laughter can be a great form of medicine and what it means to live a life of gratitude. Topics Discussed What comedians and health have in common Understanding laughter as a form of medicine How to shift your focus away from the troubles of this world Learning to live a life of gratitude and thankfulness What it looks like to lean into your strengths The importance of knowing your audience How walking slows the progression of cognitive decline --- Today’s Positive Intervention Draft your personal mission statement into one sentence Keep it on your desk, by your bed, or on your calendar Commit it to memory --- Connect with Positive Recovery MD Podcast Website: https://www.positiverecoverymd.com Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/577870242872032 Connect with Positive Recovery Centers online Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverycenters/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PositiveRecoveryCenters/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/positiverecoverycenters/ Contact Positive Recovery Centers If you or someone you know needs help, visit the website or call the number below to schedule a free assessment. About Positive Recovery Centers Positive Recovery Centers is a strengths-based addiction treatment program with locations across Texas. We offer a full continuum of care, from medical detox to sober living all supported by an ever-growing alumni community network. Our evidence-based curriculum blends the best of the old with the new, all supporting our mission: that Recovery is best pursued when meaningful, intentional positive habits are formed through empowerment and resilience instead of negativity and shame.  What is Positive Recovery? Empathy and compassion drive our mission. Positive Recovery uses strengths as a pathway to help others flourish in recovery, at work, and at home. This is our core purpose, our “why.” We creatively apply science in order to improve outcomes. Positive Recovery is not wishful thinking, it is not a magic pill, and it is not self-help. Positive Recovery is an evidence-based addiction curriculum that links the best of the old with the new, integrating existing effective approaches to treatment with interventions that enhance well-being by cultivating its components: positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and achievement. Quotes: Dr. Jason Powers   “It’s this beautiful second chance to be in recovery and to be able to take advantage of time that we were wasting before.” “In Positive Recovery, we borrow a lot from the science of happiness or the positive psychology. We want people to lead in their strengths.” Andy Huggins “Instead of hopping on CNN or MSNBC first thing in the morning and making myself ill for the rest of the day, every morning I hop on YouTube and find me an AA speaker. Their tone and attitude is just very reassuring to me.” “You get a funny idea and just figure it out by trial and error. There’s no other way.” “I think the reason why we connect with AA audiences is that we're both doing the same thing. Comics take something negative and turn them into a positive. People in recovery are taking a negative and taking it into a positive as well.” Mike Peterson  “In Recovery, you’ve gotta have fun. Just because you're in recovery that doesn't mean you can't have fun anymore.”
