Was an advisor to Queen Elizabeth I communicating with angels? Professor Suzannah Lipscomb is joined by Egyptologist Garry J. Shaw to explore the intriguing life of John Dee, his mysterious meetings with angels and demons and the secrets he believed they uncovered. With help from the enigmatic alchemist Edward Kelly, Dee wrote the Angel Diaries detailing his attempts to communicate with the divine, and the secrets of the celestial language they believed could unlock the universe's mysteries. Suzannah uncovers the complex relationship between Dee and Kelly, the apocalyptic visions, the inexplicable return of the burned manuscripts, and the dramatic breakdown after a scandalous wife-swapping decree.MOREPractical Magic: Prayers, Spells & Cunning Folkhttps://open.spotify.com/episode/218bX6v64pMYZEEJT9sxE6Presented by Professor Suzannah Lipscomb. Become one of The Cunning Folk with this rules-lite dark comedy ttrpg. Use your Magick and Luck to create a whole heap of Mischief. And seek devilish revenge on mortals on the receiving end of your ire.   The Cunning folks has its own system with a simple D6 dice pool, and interestingly features a levelling DOWN as well as levelling up mechanic. The rules encourage a ‘failing forward' style of storytelling, and the low prep required of the GM makes it ideal for one shots.   The game is launching on Kickstarter today (31st March 2025)! On this week's episode of Local Legends, Martin chats all things Worcestershire and the surrounds with folklorist and author Hugh Williams.Born in Worcester at the heart of the English Midlands, Hugh has gone about things the old fashioned way. Which is to say, he has spent almost his whole life physically exploring, discovering and researching the stranger places of England's middle counties, and is deeply passionate about telling their stories.Part of this he does through his blog, which is absolutely amazing, and he has also written three books, The Mystery of Mercia Volumes I and II, which are collections of lore and folktales centred on the old Anglo Saxon kingdom of Mercia, and, more recently, The Magic of Mercia: A History of Witchcraft and Magic in the Midlands of England. Drawing on traditional sources as well as his own collecting and site visits, Hugh's work paints a vivid picture of the English heartlands, from their very beginnings right through to the present day. All of which has earned him a prominent position on social media, where he posts pictures and videos of his discoveries to tens of thousands of people. Plus, he's now moving into the world of TV presenting – he's just filmed for the new History Channel series Weird Britain which will be released next year! So, settle in for a chat which folds in Danish reeves being skinned and their outer layers pinned to cathedrals, Cunning Folk, giants, Wild Hunts, foliate heads, and much, much more!To learn more Hugh and his work, do visit his website at mysteriesofmercia.com and you can find him on social media via @mysteriesofmerciaThe Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Imagine: it's the year 1600 and you've lost your precious silver spoons, or maybe they've been stolen. Perhaps your child has a fever. Or you're facing a trial. Maybe you're looking for love or escaping a husband. What do you do? In medieval and early modern Europe, your first port of call might have been cunning folk: practitioners of “service magic.” Neither feared (like witches), nor venerated (like saints), they were essential to daily life. For people across ages, genders, and social ranks, practical magic was a cherished resource for navigating life's many challenges. In historian Tabitha Stanmore's beguiling account, we meet lovelorn widows, dissolute nobles, selfless healers, and renegade monks. We listen in on Queen Elizabeth I's astrology readings and track treasure hunters trying to unearth buried gold without upsetting the fairies that guard it. Much like us, premodern people lived in a bewildering world, buffeted by forces beyond their control. As Stanmore reveals, their faith in magic has much to teach about how to accommodate the irrational in our allegedly enlightened lives today. Charming in every sense, Cunning Folk: Life in the Era of Practical Magic (Bloombury, 2024) is at once an immersive reconstruction of a bygone era and a thought-provoking commentary on the beauty and bafflement of being human. Feeling under the weather? We have something to help with that as, in this week's Bonus Episode, Eleanor is uncovering the mysterious history of folk healers in England!Part of the "Magic and Medicines" series, we start by chatting through who 'Cunning Folk' were, including quite how wide-scale their business was, as well as the time periods in which they were in their prime. This leads us through the years of Renaissance alchemy and characters like Simon Forman and Doctor John Dee, when folk healers operated during historic crackdowns on witchcraft, prompting them to move beyond 'hedge wisdom' to become anti-witchcraft experts! We explore how, after the Witchcraft Act of 1735, cunning folk were forced to adapt, the kinds of services they offered, how and why records of their lives and works began to be recorded during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and some of the remedies they offered for common problems. But has the craft of being a 'cunning man' or a 'cunning woman' ever really gone away? And were many of their methods actually very helpful? Through exploring the lives of people who gave themselves titles like, "The White Witch of Helston," "The Devil's Master" and "The Master of Witches," as well as the ways in which cunning folk have been presented in literature, we reveal some genuine mysteries - and a few examples of wonderful fakery.Which leads us to today, and where we go, in our post-industrial world, to find help with our ills. What has happened to all the Cunning Folk? The answer might just surprise you...The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. The ensuing Salem Witch Trials have been pointed to as a pivotal moment in American colonial history, but so much of the incident remains mysterious and clouded by mythmaking. Doug is the host and creator of the incomparable What Magic is This? - a podcast about Magic, the Occult, the Esoteric, the Paranormal, the Supernatural and the Weird and surely the single most frequently mentioned magical resource throughout the first season of Vayse. In the first part of this two-part, slightly giddy interview, the roots of Doug's magical life are revealed as he talks about how he graduated from being a disillusioned materialist teenager to a punk-rock chaos magician to a self-styled-necromantic-performative-ritual-magician with an awesome occult podcast. The conversation bounces around: from synchronicities to Bob Ross, from how to start your own magical practice to Hot Wheels skating gear, from podcasting as a work of magic to the psychic influence of the Lost Boys soundtrack... and all whilst Hine and Buckley try their best to uncover and assimilate the source of Doug's seemingly inexhaustible enthusiasm and positivity... In today's episode of The Best Guest we welcome Elen Sentier a best-selling author of British native shamanism who describes herself as a quirky, wilderness woman who is deeply connected with nature. We talk about:What it means to rewild yourselfHow to stop people pleasingWhat happens when you're true to yourselfAbout Elen SentierElen Sentier comes from a long family lineage of Cunning Folk and was brought up as awenydd (spirit keeper) in the old magical traditions of Britain.Elen trained as a transpersonal psychotherapist with Ian Gordon-Brown and Barbara Sommers when health issues led her to retire from her career at the MOD. Elen was thrilled to discover how the transpersonal perspective integrates the personal with spiritual and transcendent aspects of being human, which meshed with the old magical ways she'd been brought up in.Elen initially opened a practice in London but always more at home in the wilderness, she and her husband, a particle physicist, left London for the Welsh Marches. Here, Elen continued to develop her practice using transpersonal psychology and witchyness to help clients become their true selves, rewild their hearts and find what makes their hearts sing.Elen has also taught her work through an apprenticeship and three-year advanced course for over 30 years. Her students, from all walks of life such as policemen, poets, stock brokers and doctors, go on to take the work into their own specialisms. To date, Elen has published 12 books with the Moon Books imprint of John Hunt Publishing, three of which are bestsellers. Her bragging rights include dancing for Arlene Philips; taking contemporary dance class with Robert Cohen; flying in Jaguar fighter aircraft; doing plasma-physics at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy; and being kissed by Mick Jagger! She loves cats, and eats paleo, and her tag-line is “If the cat and the boyfriend disagree, get rid of the boyfriend!”Key TakeawaysIt's important to be able to say, I can't buy in to thatDigestive problems can be about repressed emotions and stressSaying no gets easier when you feel your wild selfIt's important to get to the roots of why you people pleaseRealise you don't have to keep playing other people's scriptsQuoteWe mostly people please because we don't feel safeMentioned in This EpisodeWanderland by Jini ReddyConnect with Elen SentierWebsiteFacebookTwitterInstagramLinkedInConnect with Victoria BennionBook your free podcast guesting strategy session today. To learn more about working with us visit www.victoriabennion.com

You may have heard of common superstitions like throwing salt over your shoulder when you spill some to ward off bad luck, or crossing your fingers when you tell a lie to prevent consequences of your transgression. These kinds of small acts to try and control or influence the spiritual realm around you were more than just common superstitions for the life of William Shakespeare. Even in Protestant England, where the monarchs like Elizabeth I and James I after her, were actively harsh against anything even suspected of being witchcraft, simultaneously operating in the households of families and property owners around England were those known as Cunning Folk. These people were witches, wizards, and magicians whose practices included mixing up specialty brews to cure someone of bewitchment, as well as practicing various kinds of miraculous healing. What's surprising about these cunning folk is not only that they were tolerated in a very anti-witchcraft society like Protestant England, but that they were rampant across England, to the point of being quite common and ordinary for Shakespeare's lifetime. Here today to explain what the cunning folk were, their place in society, and what kinds of magic they practiced is our guest and author of Cunning-Folk and the Production of Magical Artefacts Owen Davies.

Otherwise known as White Witches, they were known for providing many functions and needs all over Europe for a time. Divination, blessing, curse-breaking, dreams, conjuring of spirits, potions and much more were just some of the tools in their magical arsenal. They fulfilled many roles for those whom they served, for a price of course. In this Episode of WMiT? we are joined by The Wise Woman of Bushwick Avenue, Aerinn Hodges!

Throughout the episode, we sprinkle some serious love and devotion to Deborah Harkness and her character Diana Bishop from the All Souls series.Witches come in all shapes and sizes, and their powers manifest in a variety of beautiful ways. We hope that by the end of this episode our listeners get a better sense of the rich diversity within the witchy community and that there is so much more to this practice than black cats, pentagrams, and an obsession with Stevie Nicks's wardrobe. When writing about your witch character, for the love of god do your research, but don't feel compelled to stick within these categories. We explore these types of witches, but rest assured, there are MANY MORE: Traditional/Folk Witch Kitchen Witch Elemental Witch Hedge/Green Witch Wiccan Celestial/Cosmic Witch Hoodoo Witch Eclectic WitchHere are some of the materials we looked at for this episode:Honeybell, Fae (2010). Captain Corub, We've found but one. It sleeps beneath the old Cunning Folk's library, in the heart of the Greenwyck Ruins. It's a lesser Shade, and will keep hold of what little safety it can. It is no Shade King - no Sea - and will not make a move. For now, it's safe. Entering into the library will not be an option for any band of scavenger or scholar. They will surely die by its hand. But if you are worried about it spreading, like that dark Shade King Sea from so long ago, worry not. These lesser ones may be able to infect and corrupt on small scales, but they can only spread themselves so thin. Its presence will be held by Greenwyck's old walls. I only worry for Galadriel. There is no way she will be able to die there, as she wishes. However, I will not underestimate her lover's dedication to her. I think Yellow could slay the beast even in old age if it meant Galadriel could find rest where she wishes to. I could ever only dream of a partner so beholden to me. In the meantime, my bond with ale will do. - Edna

PhD researcher Tabitha Stanmore joins the Folklore Podcast creator and host Mark Norman, and historian Tracey Norman, to discuss her research into the role of the service magician in history. Spanning the years from c. 1350 to c. 1650, Tabitha researches how magic was practiced and by whom, whether this changed over the period, and how magical practice was affected by perspectives on gender. She also explores the extent to which magic was tolerated at different social strata, from the employment of village cunning folk to magic's use at the English royal court.
