Among Asian emerging market (EM) equities, many investors have focused this year on what they see as an usually lacklustre Chinese economy – traditionally an EM growth engine. The reality, however, is that Beijing's efforts to re-engineer the economy have led to a situation where support for the economy appears centred more on tackling possible systemic issues than developing new growth engines.

AI's ‘Godfather' quits Google; Samsung restricts ChatGPT; IBM could replace 7,800 jobs with AI – report

Geoffrey Hinton, a leading figure in artificial intelligence (AI), has resigned from Google, warning of the dangers of the field; Samsung has temporarily restricted the use of generative AI, including ChatGPT, for its employees due to cases of misuse of the technology; and IBM CEO Arvind Krishna has announced that the company expects to pause hiring for certain roles, as approximately 7,800 jobs could be replaced by artificial intelligence (AI) and automation in the coming years, Reuters reports. Also in this brief, Freshworks, India's second biggest SaaS company, beats street expectations. Notes: eBay has appointed Vidmay Naini as General Manager for Global Emerging Markets, overseeing growth in Southeast Asia, India, Eastern Europe, Israel, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America, TechCrunch reports. Naini, who was previously in charge of eBay's Southeast Asia and India businesses, will focus on supporting small and medium-sized businesses. eBay's 2022 Southeast Asia Small Online Business Trade Report found that 99 percent of small businesses on eBay currently export items to an average of 25 different international markets, with 68% of eBay-enabled small businesses in six Southeast Asian countries exporting to 10 or more international markets. Geoffrey Hinton, a leading figure in artificial intelligence (AI), has resigned from Google, warning of the dangers of the field, the New York Times and the BBC report, among others.   Hinton, who is known as the godfather of AI, has developed pioneering research on neural networks and deep learning, helping to pave the way for systems such as ChatGPT. He has voiced concerns about the rapid development of AI chatbots which could become more intelligent than humans, potentially being used for "bad things". Samsung has temporarily restricted the use of generative AI, including OpenAI's ChatGPT, for its employees due to cases of misuse of the technology, CNBC reports. The company has advised workers not to enter any personal or company-related information into the services and to take precautions when using ChatGPT and other products outside of work. Samsung is still looking for ways to safely use generative AI to enhance employee productivity and efficiency. IBM has announced that it expects to pause hiring for certain roles as approximately 7,800 jobs could be replaced by AI and automation in the coming years, Reuters reports. Hiring specifically in back-office functions such as human resources will be suspended or slowed. 30 percent of non-customer-facing roles could be replaced by AI and automation within five years. The reduction could include not replacing roles vacated by attrition. The CEOs of Microsoft, Alphabet's Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic will meet with Vice President Kamala Harris and top administration officials to discuss key AI issues, Reuters reports. US President Joe Biden's administration has been seeking public comments on proposed accountability measures for AI systems. In a blog post on Monday, deputies from the White House Domestic Policy Council and White House Office of Science and Technology Policy wrote about how the technology can pose a serious risk to workers. Freshworks beat quarterly revenue estimates and posted its first adjusted operating profit, according to Reuters. Rising interest rates, high inflation, and a banking crisis have worsened the global economic outlook in recent months, forcing businesses to slash their technology budgets. Freshworks' revenue rose 20% in Q1 to $137.7 million, and it posted an adjusted operating profit of $3.9 million. Net loss narrowed to $42.7 million, from $49.1 million a year earlier.

Our guest for this episode is Valentyn Zadorin. He is a private equity investor at Siguler Guff and is responsible for deal evaluation and execution for Siguler Guff's Global Emerging Markets platform. Prior to joining Siguler Guff in 2022, he was an Investment Banker at Barclays Investment Bank covering the technology ecosystem. Previously, he was a Co-founder and Partner at a full-service 3PL provider in Ukraine and an investor in emerging markets. We get to know more about Val as he talks about his background, growing up in Ukraine, and his reasons for coming to Haas to pursue an MBA. Val was also recently featured in Poets&Quants about his views and experience on the Russian aggression in Ukraine. In this episode, he shares a little bit about what started the war, what's currently going on, and the actions people can take to help Ukraine win.Episode Quotes:Why Haas?"I didn't have an emotional connection to Berkeley, to be entirely honest. But I knew two things. The first one is that I felt big potential in technology, so I wanted to start in the right field, in the right market. And what's the best place to do that other than the Bay area? And the second thing, I actually could relate to the four defining principles. It's funny because, usually, you think it's just a marketing tool of some sort. But in reality, some of those are indeed what I have been trying to be as a person. My favorite one is confidence without attitude. And to me, it fits my personality really well. I believe, after my experience of working with different graduates from different schools, Berkeley and Haas is really distinguished by incredibly smart and hardworking people who are modest and have the confidence without attitude at the same time. When I got to the school, it turned out that it was actually an amazing fit. I realized only after being at Haas how lucky I got, essentially. It was challenging, but the environment is just incredibly supportive, and starting from my classmates to the faculty, I got a lot of support in the school. And I'm glad I ended up in Berkeley and I made the right choice in the end."On what could be the end result of the war for Ukraine"So, by starting this war, Russia not only just blew up their economy. They not only united all the Ukrainians together. I believe, really, after the war ends, Ukraine is going to be more united than ever. And it's going to be an incredibly prosperous country because this aggression just changed our moral compass inside the country. And at the same time, it brought the attention of international organizations to the issues. I think, with international support, after the war ends, the best way to actually change something within Russia is to show that Ukraine is going to be prosperous and successful. And hopefully, after Russian people see that, they will realize that they have to do something on their own within their country."Action items for people to help support Ukraine"I think it's really important to talk about it. And we probably are at the point where people are just getting tired of negative news and the war. They're trying to move on. But in reality, it's important for all of us, as I mentioned. It's really a war against freedom and the war against Western values. There are a few action items. So, first of all, it's probably most important. Please, use your rights as citizens and appeal to elected representatives. Just move this top on their agenda, essentially. Let them know that it's important for you and let them know that, if they want to be elected for the next term, they should be helping Ukraine. I think that's a really important thing.Secondly, Ukraine needs weapons. We have been winning. The problem is there are five Russian soldiers and one Ukrainian, and there are three tanks on one Ukrainian missile launcher. So, to really fight back, Ukraine needs weapons. The third thing, and it's really important. I recommend donating. I've received so many donations for the Ukrainian cause. And it's like tens of thousands of dollars that were channeled through me to NGOs who are helping victims of war, who are helping soldiers now. I really appreciate that."How can businesspeople and entrepreneurs help the cause?"As businessmen, as graduates of Haas, we are making purchasing decisions, all of us. At some point, we either will be or we are. Don't buy Russian products, because by buying Russian products, you are paying companies who are going to pay taxes in Russia that, in turn, going to be used to finance the war. And it's a vote that we are making with our wallets. So, be mindful of that. And please, check your channels."Show Links:Valentyn Zadorin LinkedInRazom for UkraineLost Kingdom by Serhii Plokhy Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/onehaas/donations

Joining us today for an insightful discussion on emerging markets is Amit Goel, portfolio manager with Fidelity International. Amit is based in Singapore and has over 15 years of experience covering emerging markets equities. He is a member of the Global Emerging Markets team and manages several Emerging Market strategies. Historically, emerging markets have presented strong opportunities to capture higher returns in fast-growing regions. But with ever-present challenges facing the global economy - including growing geopolitical risks, inflationary pressures, and a slowdown in China - many are wondering if this thesis still holds true. So, given that different regions have varying investment risks, how should investors approach investing in emerging markets? And how will consumers in emerging markets be affected by higher inflation and rising rates? Amit shares his insights today with host Pamela Ritchie. Recorded on April 28, 2022. John Malloy, manager of the RWC Global Emerging Markets fund, believes that raw materials stocks will be a huge driver for emerging markets, due to their crucial role in the transition to green energy. The fund manager is particularly bullish towards Zambia's largest mining company, First Quantum Minerals, due to its focus on copper mining. Other plays in the strategy include Chilean firm SQM (Sociedad Química y Minera), which is the largest lithium producer globally. Malloy also discusses how Evergrande and the more onerous regulation of Chinese tech companies has impacted the rest of emerging markets. Despite contagion in Chinese equity markets, companies from the one party state still remain the largest allocation in Malloy's portfolio. The fund manager also explained why he had been upping his position in Chinese tech giants Meituan and Tencent. Over three years the Global Emerging Markets fund has returned 37.4% compared with a sector average of 27.4%.
