Good Sunday afternoon to you,I was blown away by the response to Wednesday's article about weight loss. The Twitter/X summary got more than 10 million views. Here it is, in case you missed it. Going forward, I am thinking of writing more alternative health stuff, as there seems to be a huge appetite for it. But today it's business as usual: gold. And I have a question for you …The Great Steppe stretches approximately 5,000 miles from the Pacific coast of China through Mongolia, Siberia, Xinjiang, Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine, and Romania, reaching the Danube Delta and Hungary.Vast stretches of grassland, savanna, and shrubland—harsh and dry, devoid of trees and large vegetation—are sandwiched between forests to the north and mountains and deserts to the south. This region has connected Central Europe, Eastern Europe, Western Asia, Central Asia, East Asia, and South Asia since the Paleolithic Age, serving as a predecessor to the Silk Road and the Eurasian land bridge. This ocean of grass is one of the world's largest ecosystems. Many remarkable species—elk, gazelle, brown bear, leopard, and tiger—have made it their home. So have many great nomadic empires—the Xiongnu, the Scythians, the Mongols, the Huns, and the Göktürk Khaganate—all famous for their ferocity, horsemanship, and military might. The open space gives rise to mighty extremes of weather—howling winds, unbearable heat by day, and freezing cold by night. Humans could only survive by breeding creatures—goats, sheep, camels, and cattle—even hardier than themselves. Of all of these, perhaps the most essential to human survival and evolution was the horse. The horse was first domesticated on the Steppe about 6,000 years ago, probably by the Botai people in present-day Kazakhstan. Their horses—likely similar to today's Mongolian horse—were small, stocky, and hardy, able to travel long distances in trying conditions. The horse enabled tribes to guide their flocks over large distances as they searched for new grazing lands. It facilitated trade and exchange, and allowed them to form huge and terrifying armies. The fearsome Scythians were the first to use horses in battle, carrying stones, clubs, and bows as weapons. These marauding armies inspired fear. Their warriors were such brilliant horsemen that it seemed they and their horses were one creature, giving rise to the Greek myth of the centaur: wild, untamed, and violent; strong, fast, and ferocious; drunken, lawless, and lustful, with the upper body of a man and the lower body of a horse. The Greeks had a complicated relationship with the Scythians, both admiring and fearing them. Chiron, one of the centaurs famous for his wisdom and knowledge of medicine, tutored many of the greatest Greek heroes, including Hercules, Achilles, and Jason. Perhaps the Greeks exaggerated their barbarity to contrast it with their own sophistication and culture. In any case, while the centaur has endured in myth, it was not long before it was realized that man and beast were not one, and the practice of horse-riding spread beyond the Great Steppe. The horse became the primary mode of land transport for thousands of years. You really should subscribe. Then the Industrial Revolution came along. The first steam locomotive was developed in England in 1804. By the mid-19th century, railroads had become the primary mode of transportation for people and goods across much of the world. It was the beginning of the end for horses as a primary mode of transportation. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the automobile emerged. “Horseless carriages,” they were called. Karl Benz developed the first gasoline-powered car in 1885. By the early 1900s, cars had become a common sight on many roads, further diminishing the need for horses.Inventor Alexander Winton sought investment for his Winton Motor Carriage Company. “Get a horse!” a banker told him. “You're crazy if you think this fool contraption you've been wasting your time on will ever displace the horse.”Winton continues:“From my pocket, I took a clipping from the New York World of November 17, 1895, and asked him to read it. He brushed it aside. I insisted. It was an interview with Thomas A. Edison: ‘Talking of horseless carriages suggests to my mind that the horse is doomed… Ten years from now you will be able to buy a horseless vehicle for what you would pay today for a wagon and a pair of horses. The money spent in the keep of the horses will be saved and the danger to life will be much reduced.'”The banker threw back the clipping and snorted, “Another inventor talking.”Today, the horse is, for the most part, an expensive luxury. Its use is often just symbolic. How does this relate to goldHere is my question:Could you say the same about gold? The horse was transport for 6,000 years. It was transport for almost as long as gold was official money. It was “natural transport.”But just as transport changes as technology evolves, so does money.Perhaps gold is to money as the horse is to transport?Something to ponder this Sunday afternoon.(SPOILER: I don't think it is!)Tell your friends about this amazing article. As from later this week I will be at the Edinburgh Fringe, performing Shaping the Earth, a “lecture with funny bits” about the history of mining. I'm then taking the show to London on October 9th and 10th to the Museum of Comedy. Please come if you fancy a bit of “learning and laughter”. The Edinburgh link is here. New Years' Eve, 1879. 35 year old Karl Benz and his wife Bertha are huddled around a small block of iron. Karl no doubt thinks about the decade's worth of work and near-financial ruin contained in its small footprint. But even if he can finally get it to run smoothly, it's only a first step. His end goal is to use it in a horseless carriage, with the hopes of changing the way people move. But how did Karl Benz, Gottlieb Daimler, and Wilhelm Maybach revolutionize the internal combustion engine? How did they create an industry from essentially nothing? And how is the story of the automobile itself inextricable from the story of Mercedes-Benz? Today on Past Gas, the first episode in a four-part series on the history of Mercedes-Benz. Theme: Evangelism and Discipleship | Raevyn Robinson “Yesterday's Price is not Today's Price” ◦ Most of us who grew up in church are familiar with how basic the approach to evangelism and discipleship was back in the day… ◦ Anybody that grew up in church during the 70's, 80's and 90's…you know what this was like. ◦ Much of it consisted of the entire congregation gathering at the church on a designated Saturday. ◦ Everyone showed up in their Saturday's best…..matching church t-shirts ◦ the men were more than likely rocking dad jeans, with the church shirt tightly tucked in the jeans, a “Jesus saves” dad hat or something similar and some off-brand sneakers ◦ Women probably paired the church tee with an ankle length jean skirts, white keds and scrunchy crew socks ◦ And the pastor toting a megaphone. ◦ Sometimes the saints broke off into small groups to canvas various areas near the church to pass out tracts or pamphlets, offer prayer and salvation to members within that community then inviting them to church ◦ They typically had strict guidelines or a script that was previously taught during classes of discipleship, evangelism, soul winning, outreach, witnessing ◦ While the terms where used interchangeably….the common goal was to effectively win souls to Christ and get them off the streets ◦ So on these Saturdays, at some point during or nearing the end, they would meet back up at a set time and location for a moment of unified prayer, praise and maybe a mini sermon from the pastor. ◦ Overall, most churches pretty much stuck to a basic routine of how their ministry did their part to grow the kingdom. ◦ During this era, this method of execution was known to work and be extremely effective. ◦ Droves of people swarmed to churches with expectation and vigor and it wasn't just and easter or mother's day thing! ◦ Men, women, kids and families were actively pursuing God and going to church!!! ◦ Some fresh out of jail, educators, parolees, doctors, former pimps and hoe's, dope dealers, lawyers, business owners, you name it! ◦ Churches were being packed out with people of all walks of life. All that mattered was that they were compelled to know more about God and commit their Sundays to God and church ◦ But here we are in 2023. Jammed. Scratching our heads ◦ Wrestling with the memory of what was ◦ Glancing at empty pews and parking lots in disappointment ◦ Grasping for a sense of nostalgia to somehow manifest in real time. Even if its just for a moment. ◦ Yet, here we are……so much has changed. ◦ From recessions, to economical crisis, to the destruction of families, black home foreclosures, cancel culture, innocent black faces being erased by new-age racism, human trafficking, mass shootings, crystals and sage, drug wars, feminism, gentrification, overcrowded prisons, gender identity crisis….and most recently — a devastating pandemic!!!! ◦ So what happens now????? ◦ What happens when the direction and speed of the wind changes??? ◦ What happens when God's voice now hits different???? ◦ What happens when yesterday just doesn't work for today???? ◦ What happens when it's time to honor the foundation, but rebuild the walls???? ◦ What happens when yesterday's leaders have fulfilled their obligatory call??? ◦ What happens when you no longer have the answers you once had???? Joshua 1:1-11 ◦ What happens when Moses has gotten you out of Egypt, but it's now time for a Joshua to take you to the promised land???? ◦ every starter is not a finisher!!!! ◦ This is why it is important for us to have discernment. Especially leaders. leaders are called to gather and equip ◦ But like Moses, sometimes in the midst of us gathering and equipping, the moment we hear those we lead complaining….we can get distracted from the main vision. ◦ Then the main thing no longer remains the main thing….damage control becomes the main thing. ◦ And before you know it, we've spent more time on fixing people that we were only suppose to help save! ◦ Like Moses, It not every leaders job to get the people to the promised land. It's only their job to show them the vision of the promise! ◦ So quite obviously….Moses wasn't called to be Joshua. ◦ Moses had a responsibility to groom Joshua as his successor…and in the book of Numbers he did just that! ◦ Moses understood the leader in Joshua and so Joshua was equipped to carry on what Moses was not called to carry. ◦ So here we are in 2023……. ◦ Living with a foggy view of what use to be. We use to have good church. Use to have good pastors, I use to make this much money, use to have 700 members, use to have influence in the communities, use to have access to this, use to have this type of car, use to have this job, we use to have less violence, we use to have this and that….. ◦ Use to evangelize, use to disciple…….use to hear God….use to use to use to!!!! ◦ All these use to's but where is Joshua???? ◦ Well as a tribe, we gotta let go of Moses and take hold of Joshua. ◦ With Joshua comes a clearer vision to move forward. With Joshua comes access to helping a new generation…here comes A new era. But also New problems ◦ And when you have new problems, you have to have new solutions. ◦ Moses represents traditional leadership and Joshua represents contemporary leadership ◦ We are not bible characters, what the heck does that have to do with us Raevyn???? ◦ Well, It's time for us to recognize the need for bridging the gap between tradition and contemporary methods of reaching people! ◦ We can't attempt to forsake what we know, but we have to stop trying to cancel the assignment of those of this new generation who are called to escort us to the promised land ◦ So many people are choosing to stay home because they have been worn down on satan's society slowly but accurately, demolishing the genuine desire to accept Christ and to find community among like-minded believers ◦ People are suffering because believers have grown lazy. ◦ So instead of passing the torch, we are holding onto it out of greed, pride and selfishness…causing those souls who are connected to the leadership of Joshua….die in the wilderness with Moses! ◦ But today, God wants us to know that who his hand is on, has the favor to get the job done. ◦ If it aint you, move over!!!! Stop blocking the future being in your feelings about what you can't control!!!! Stop downplaying who's next because you got overlooked. ◦ Truth is if you got overlooked, it was because you weren't qualified. There were hundreds and thousands of other young people God could've chosen to get the Israelites to the promised land, but he chose young Josh. ◦ Josh had the juice. He was ready, he was in position and he had the vision!!!! ◦ Your boss didn't give you the promotion because you keep showing up late. ◦ He didn't give you the raise, because every time he walks by your desk you're always on Facebook on work hours. ◦ Learn to celebrate those who elevate before you do because when its your turn, you're gonna need somebody to celebrate you ◦ Im sure Joshua had some haters on his heels when he took Moses' place. ◦ It wouldn't be right if he didn't. But he was on a mission to serve and to disciple. ◦ He wasn't worried about what a hater had to say. ◦ For the kingdom to grow and flourish, we've gotta find Joshua. ◦ We've gotta get out of the wilderness. It's time to stop complaining and switch leaders!!!! ◦ Where is Joshua????????????? ◦ It can no longer be about personal gain. It's gotta be about the kingdom!!!! ◦ Moses' strategy got these buffers and puffers out of the past, but Joshua's strategy got them into the future! ◦ I know it was some senior saints on that trip who wanted to keep stopping cuz their knees hurt. Complaining that if Moses was alive, he woulda let us have a break. ◦ Well guess what, Moses is dead now! So get with the program or get left!!!!! ◦ We've gotta learn when to shut up and put our hands to the plow to support and equip the new generation of leaders. ◦ Check this out….Joshua can't be the Joshua he's called to be until Moses is permanently silenced!!! Moses had to die so he didn't become a distraction to the future. ◦ We often grieve the people we lost or had to leave behind, when we should be celebrating their absence because the very sound of their voice would have distracted us from being who God called us to be! ◦ We gotta shift our thinking!!!! If it takes 1 L to gain 10 wins….count me in. IDK who I gotta ditch, who I gotta quit and who I gotta bury….ima get what God promised me and I will stand and see the goodness of God in the land of the living!!! ◦ Discipleship discipleship………… ◦ The commission hasn't changed, just the year! The work done back in the 70's, 80's and 90's to build God's kingdom still applies here today. But we've gotten complacent, scared, lazy, entitled and have resorted to buying souls instead feeding them. ◦ Moses got annoyed with the complaints of “we hungry, we thirsty”, kids screaming, “are we there yet?” and he let them crazy people bully him into challenging God. ◦ He pretty much bought their silence with manna lol ◦ Same thing we do today! We appease a half of a need and advertise it as a completed accomplishment. ◦ Let me show you what I mean… ◦ Don't get me wrong….there is nothing wrong with churches giving away cars and paying people's bills, rent and things of that nature. We are called to it ALL….but when that alone has become the set tool to market church instead of presenting salvation….we've lost the idea of the great commission. ◦ Just like Moses, we've lost sight of our WHY. ◦ So what happens, God says okay Moses, you already on borrowed time, its been 40 years dude…so now times up. ◦ Im gonna put josh in!!!! ◦ Joshua didn't take Moses place as a leader and do away with the covenant God made with Moses, he simply picked up where Moses left off and finished the job. ◦ So while we're in uncharted territories, kids robbing stores left and right, babies being murdered, black fathers being imprisoned, young girls being sold, fentanyl literally snatching lives young and old…. ◦ we still have a responsibility to remember that just because the law was under Moses, doesn't mean it dies with him! ◦ We gotta prepare for the invasion into the promised land!!!! ◦ Yes crime is at an all time high, but we have become afraid of the people we are called to serve!!!! ◦ Joshua never allowed the children of Israel to bully him into quitting! Because who and what God calls us to, he will also give us the grace to fulfill that which he's called. ◦ Joshua came in, set order and executed his plan!!! ◦ So today I want to challenge all of us to change our perspective about discipleship and evangelism. ◦ Change the way you speak about the charge of new leadership. ◦ Change the way you speak about what use to be. ◦ It's good to have the memories. But what are we doing to get back to that same excitement and commitment to winning new souls? ◦ Yea you got a new boss, instead of whining about him and complaining that you don't like him. Get along with him anyway and find out what you can learn from him so you can gain tools to do your own job better! ◦ Every change is not a death sentence! sometimes we be so afraid of change, the whole time that ain't stopping the change from taking place lol ◦ We do this with everything and it's just complete unproductive. Stop pacifying your feelings and start partnering with the future!!!! ◦ Stop allowing the current climate scare you out of speaking life into the lost kids you encounter. ◦ Be intentional about taking a moment to pray with a young person you see that might be lost in the world, pray for them. If you aren't confident in how to deeply connect with them, Ask God to give you direction and peace to link them to a Joshua. ◦ These 1988 leaders can't help these kids. they're out of touch. ◦ Catch this: What Moses couldn't accomplish in 40 years, Joshua did in 3! ◦ We gotta decide, will we be apart of the problem or partner with the solution!!! ◦ you don't have a choice because many of your grandchildren, your children, your nieces an nephews are lost!!! They are robbing people and stores BLIND and you don't even know it! They are jobless crying out for help. Suffering in the dark aimlessly. And because you are stuck in what use to be, under Moses leadership….they are missing the promised land. ◦ They are getting further away from the gateway to Christ because you are moving in fear. You are stuck in the “but I didn't raise them like that!”….well who did??? Lol ◦ Big mama is gone! Been gone, long gone! You big mama now, so find away to become a resource and a connecting point that bridges generations! ◦ Moses is gone, he is dead and is not coming back! It's time to accept the Joshua generation! They are here and they are willing to do the work to build the kingdom. But you gotta be willing to stand with them, cultivate them, support them. ◦ For the rest of this month, I am going to commission us to daily write out and read out loud every scripture (in whatever version you like), but write down and read out loud every scripture pertaining to the word FEAR. ◦ perfect love casts out all fear, God has not given us the spirit of fear, as I walk through the valley of the shadow of death- I will fear no evil. Etc. ◦ Start declaring them over yourself. Because if we are called to be a light, fear cannot dwell there. ◦ Just because the climate has changed, we cannot continue to forsake the foundation of what got us here, the only thing that changed is the generation. But what God said has NEVER changed. ◦ We cannot keep blaming the pandemic, the system, other parents, we have to take some responsibility for why we are yet in the wilderness mindset, when we were called to the promise. ◦ There are Joshua's allllllll over, who have shown they are capable to carry the torch and so many leaders prior to them are worn down and defeated but refuse to give up their place. ◦ Look at Mitch McConnell….that man don't know if he is on the moon or a silent auction in Bermuda. ◦ Joe Biden, he can't stop falling to save his own life….these people are OLD, and old has them in a headlock, but they refuse to accept that they are in the way of progression. Don't be that way. ◦ Don't be a thorn in the side. ◦ Whatever capacity this applies to, church, home, workplace, ministry, businesses, etc. when it's time to make changes. Make them, but you gotta remember yesterday's price is not todays price!!!! ◦ Old things are passed away, behold all things are made new!!!! ◦ It's not gonna look how it use to look or be how it use to be! ◦ If you're old, intentionally partner with a young person….stop waiting for them to approach you. You'll be waiting all day!!! These kids are built different. ◦ These are not the same kinda kids my generation was when we were growing up. Im an 80's baby and my friends and I often laugh and say we are the last generation that played outside! ◦ These “inside” kids are not cut from the same cloth. So you cannot approach them how you'd approach one of us. So people are afraid to say anything to them at all. And that will NOT win them over!!!! ◦ Make the first move, encourage them. find out what their dreams are, call out the leader in them because the future belongs to them. But sometimes they just need a little push. ◦ If you're apart of a church, connect with a young leader and find a way to support them. Give them the space to lead!!!! ◦ If you're a parent, stop being so controlling, your kids futures do not belong to you. Sit down with them, step into their world for a second. Don't over-spiritualize things, give them a safe space to just BE. ◦ I guarantee you'll see that they actually do hear you, they just tune you out because your approach does not resonate with them. ◦ If you raised them the way you claim you have, your 40 years in the wilderness can end the day you allow them to lead….watch that 40 turn into a 3 day turnaround! ◦ We cannot get a return on what we have never invested in! ◦ We are at a pivotal point. A point of passing the torch. ◦ Evangelism and discipleship has to now reflect the rise of the Joshua generation. ◦ Cuz guess what….the apostle Fat Joe said it best….yesterday's price is not today's price. ◦ No longer can we ignore, downplay, reject, smother, stuff down, overlook, underserve and cast down who God has already called next! ◦ It's now a season to shift gears. It's time to accept that you no longer have the capacity to pull, it's now time to PUSH….somebody else. ◦ Because that somebody else is who God has assigned to get you to the next level. ◦ But we have to stop this continuum of “well we use to do it like this” and “we've never done it that way before” ◦ Statements like that curse exponential growth. The power of life and death are in the tongue. ◦ What's not broke, don't need to be fixed….well it may not be broken but it sure is bleeding and bleeding pretty bad. So if you want to save the limb, you gotta perform surgery!!!! ◦ This rising generation of leaders may not do things the way you all did them back them, but it fits for this time!!!!!! And it works!!!!!! ◦ ultimately, when you refuse to cultivate them….what you are saying, without saying is….we want your gifts, but leave your calling at home. ◦ So many ministries are failing because of this mentality. ◦ So many people have yet to know Jesus, because of this mentality. ◦ So many souls are still lost, because of this mentality. ◦ A generation is left to their own vices because of this mentality. ◦ But here is a huge and overwhelming wake up call….NOTHING EVER STAYS THE SAME!!!!!! ◦ Whomever God sent to deliver you from your place of bondage, will not always be the person that God births your promise through! ◦ If we were called and designed to stay the same we would still be riding camels and horses to work everyday. But guess what, a German man named Karl Benz, was a Joshua in a rising generation. ◦ He came up with the bright idea of a car!!!!!!! ◦ And in that idea, he discovered that it could get people from one place to another faster than a horse. ◦ The invention of the car didn't make the horse useless, but it did shift their purpose. ◦ It may not be your season to lead anymore, but it may be time for you to help a Joshua step into theirs. Episode: 2671 Why do our automobile (or airplane or motorcycle, or ship) engines have so many cylinders? Today, how many cylinders?

Henry FordSome inventions are based on simple ideas or principles.Barometers are based on the idea that air has weight and pushes down on objects.A barometer measures this air pressure.Evangelista Terricelli invented barometers in Italy in 1643.Other inventions have taken longer to develop. The automobile has thousands of parts, and it took a long time to make a really useful car.Henry Ford was one of the first people to make a reliable automobile. In 1765, James Watt invented the steam engine.Within a few years, a Frenchman, Nicolas Cugnot, had built a steam-powered vehicleThese steam carriages were used in England in the 1800s.But they were big and slow. They looked like a train without the tracks. Most people preferred to travel by train. In Germany during the 1870s and 1880s, Nikolaus Otto and Gottlieb Daimler developed the internal combustion engine. This ran by burning gasoline.Another German, Karl Benz, built a gasoline powered car.Around the world, there were many inventors trying to build a car that would be better than the one before. Some people thought that electric cars would become common. In the 1890s, everal inventors working in the United States developed a gasoline powered car that was practical for daily use.Henry Ford was born on a farm in Michigan in 1863.As a boy, he loved to take clocks and watches apart and reassemble them.Eventually, he went to work for the Detroit Edison Company. In his spare time, he worked on a “horseless carriage”, as the early cars were called. In 1896, he completed a car that ran smoothly. He later sold it and made another one.Since early cars were made by hand, they were usually quite expensive. Not only that, but when they broke down, there were no repair shops to take them to.One had to know how to repair a car oneself.Henry Ford tried to make cars which would be affordable and which would not break down very easily. His Ford Motor Company was formed in 1903 in Detroit, Michigan.Since many parts had to be brought together to make a car,Ford developed the assembly line.On the line, each worker would do one specific job. When the car reached the end of the assembly line, it was finished. In this way, many cars could be made in a single day.The result was that Ford was able to bring the price of cars down.Ford's “Model T” car was advertised as being as frisky as a jack rabbit and more durable than a mule.Since it cost hundreds, rather than thousands of dollars, many ordinary families were now able to buy a car.Once many people had cars, their habits began to change.People didn't have to live next to the factories or offices that they worked in.Going for Sunday drives or traveling to tourist sites became a common thing. In 1905, a car drove across the United States and back again. In 1912, a car went across Canada from coast to coast.Soon, there was public pressure for good roads so that cars could travel anywhere in North America.Henry Ford was not the only inventor of the modern car. However, he was able to make a car that everyone could use and afford.

The automobile was invited at the end of the 19th century by Karl Benz. Henry Ford would make it affordable to the masses with his Model T, which was made affordable by the invention of a new manufacturing method called the assembly line. Following the Great War, the way travel occurred would change forever. Cars could be seen all over. Instead of the horse buggy, this new horseless gas carriage would be moving people and products through cities and across the country. And although the world would adopt cars to move from A to B, America is especially impacted by it with its car culture and trucking culture. How would America and the world develop during the 20th century if Ford's Model T wasn't affordable to the masses, and the automobile remained an item of luxury rather than of need? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

İlk motorlu araçlar at arabalarına çok şey borçludur. Atların yerine atsız arabaların kullanılması birçok alanda yeni bir dönem başlattı. Buharla çalışan araçlar James Watt'ın 1769 yılında buhar makinesini icat etmesiyle doğdu. Yapılan araçlardan birisi de buharlı trendi. Buharlı tren kara yolu taşımacılığında yeni bir dönem başlattı. Otomobil denince akla ilk gelen isimlerden biri de Karl Benz'dir. Benz, üç tekerlekli ilk arabasını 1885 başlarında yapmıştı. Otomobil kelimesi Benz'in arabasını yapmasından kısa bir süre önce ortaya atılmıştı.

The auto industry is changing faster than it has since the days of Karl Benz and Henry Ford. Manufacturers are investing billions into EVs. Dealers are adopting “order your vehicle” sales models and transforming the way they do business with customers. In this environment, M&A remains full-steam-ahead. Smaller auto groups and family dealerships continue to look at historic high valuations, deciding their best option is to sell. Large companies continue to consolidate, invest, and reinvest in the industry. Today, we cover all of this ground and take a look at what's to come in the months ahead. Episode Highlights: Dave and Derek discuss how some dealerships are succeeding by hiring salespeople from outside the dealership industry. We learn how selling an EV is different from selling a gas-powered vehicle. Dave and Derek explore how all this could be a positive change, allowing automotive professionals to be successful by “working smarter not harder.” Episode Quote: “The whole dynamic of the industry is changing. I don't think this will take away from profitability. The new process could create more profitability and higher customer satisfaction.” — Dave Cantin|| Dealer News Today is a DCG Media production

Vehicles running on clean electricity for miles. It seemed like something out of a movie – until it wasn't. The modern car invented by Karl Benz and produced for the masses by Henry Ford has changed the world. Mobility. Convenience. Status. Freedom. And lots of emotion. Everyone has a story about their first car or that epic road trip down the coast. But there's a new player on the market. It drastically cuts emissions, fuel costs and maintenance. It's hailed by many as a key step in our journey to net zero. Initially, electric cars were reserved for the happy few who could afford the hefty price tag. And there was the charging anxiety to deal with too – what if the battery runs out mid route? The number of electric cars remains small versus the fossil-fuelled alternatives, but things are changing. The pandemic disrupted the traditional car markets and some are saying we've reached peak petrol. In fact, 1 in 2 people are already considering an electric vehicle. And the UK government has confirmed a ban on sales of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030. So what's it going to take for all of us to switch to electric? Charging infrastructure continues to be top of mind for eco-warriors. And when is the right time to make the switch? Can we actually afford it? Does it suit our lifestyle? What about cuts to subsidies – how will they affect sales? How can businesses best embrace the financial and environmental benefits – think deliveries and company cars? What can we learn from other countries? And what does an all electric world look like? Karl Benz... Eva Maria Decker??? Responsible for millions of deaths???
Looking back on humanity’s achievements, you can pinpoint certain landmark moments that changed the world forever. One such moment was, undoubtedly, the birth of the automobile which, like rail transport before it and aviation afterwards, completely revolutionized how humans moved around. Many people deserve credit for this achievement. As you are about to find out, the concept of the “first car in the world” is, by no means, a settled matter, but the lion’s share of the accolades goes to Karl Benz who designed and built what is regarded by many as the true first automobile.
When you consider the pace of acceleration in technology over the last century, I always wonder what some of the early pioneers would make of it today. Would Louis Pasteur look aghast at keyhole surgery? What would Alan Turing make of the processing power of the modern-day laptop? And what would Karl Benz make of today’s automobiles? His 1886 Benz Patent Motorwagen, which is widely regarded as the first automobile, used the Benz 954cc single-cylinder four-stroke engine and was capable of 670W of power – equating to an eye watering 0.9bhp.A far cry from what rolls off today’s production lines, and a key part of that has been the growth in electronics technology within the car. Indeed, it is predicated that by 2030, 50% of the total cost of a car’s production will be its electronics. This podcast discusses the findings of the roundtable.
--- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rodrigo-felicissimo/support
Oh my giddy aunt, will you look at that, we have reached 52 episodes! Wow, you like us, you really do, thank you. Even more surprising is the fact that we haven’t had the ‘Mericans come busting through our doors looking for fossil fuels, erm, I mean terrorists etc. We have an amazing episode for you this week, starting with DINOSAURS!!! That’s right folks, dinosaurs, and the feather that covered them. It is much more interesting than you might think learning about the α and β keratins that make things such as hair, claws, horns, and feathers. This is combined with a look at some amazingly huge pterosaurs, namely the Quetzalcoatlus Northropi. A dinosaur the size of a small plane that could fly for days at speeds of 140-160 miles per hour, perfect for the get-away on the weekend and avoiding traffic. After this we are faced with news from Star Trek regarding Piccard no longer being a Captain, so grab your cup of Earl Grey Hot and strap in for this as it is amazing, particularly when we try to combine Doctor Who, Star Trek and James Bond into one movie or series. That’s right folks we have tried to combine three of the greatest franchises together this week. After this head exploding drama we look at the absolute mayhem and devastation that is the Metro Exodus leaving Steam debacle. It is such a disaster that you could be forgiven for thinking that we have visited a sewage treatment plant, and trust me plenty of that is hitting the fan over this. After this roller coaster ride we look at games such as Stardew Valley, Elder Scrolls Online and the fact that the DJ is still lonely in Fallout 76. So please, sit back and sip your cup of Earl Grey Hot as we take you on a journey through these topics. As always we would love to hear from you so feel free to drop us a line.
Arguably the most recognised, respected and awarded road and transport engineer in Australia, Dr. Max Lay, has written another book: “The Harnessing of Power: How the 19thCentury Transport Innovators Transformed the way the world Operates”. Why write the book? At the end of the 20th century Max was asked to write a presentation for an international roads conference in Paris on “Roads in the 20th century”. In the hotel before the talk, he thought about how he should introduce his presentation because the big break throughs for many things to do with transport, happened in the 19th century. The 20th century was more a time where these inventions flourished to their full extent. I asked Max if this was a “Road to Damascus” experience, an epiphany but he said he didn't meet St Paul or anyone else! What does an engineer bring to history? Max believes that you don't understand something unless you know the history. He said that he did not write this book as a historian with a background in economics, social sciences or politics, but wrote it as an engineer. For him, an engineer brings to the debatean understanding of the cause and effect of a situation with humans as part ofthe process. The engineer, however, particularly looks at the physical things that made something possible. Not even the inventors understood what impact their inventions would have. The incredible thing that Max discovered while writing the book was how little the inventors realised just what their inventions would lead to and how they would be used. Max noted that Karl Benz didn't think that people should drive cars more than 20 mph and he didn't think anyone would be killed by a car because they would never travel fast enough. Gottlieb Daimler thought that engines were better for boats and aeroplanes but he originally built the few cars to keep the business going. How the watch helped transport One of the examples of the technology that was behind the ultimate inventions of thecar andthe train was the watch. A couple of hundred years before these vehicles came into being, people had invented incredible mechanisms with cogs and things whizzing around faster than the eye can see. Much of this technology hadmade it possible to produce the valves on steam engines and many people who had worked with watches (such as Carl Benz) transplanted it 100 times bigger into vehicles. Transport and watches work together to establish the concept of a universal time. It the past time was recognised on the circumstances of every particular location. The stagecoach's arrival was not timed to the minute. But with trains travelling at a much faster pace there was a need for a schedule across many regions. It was around this time that the concept of Greenwich Mean Time was established. It didn't all happen instantaneously. Developments were not always instantaneous and were not always achieved uniformly across the world. Max's book went way back in history to look at some of our earlier freight vehicles. Oxen were used before horses under a simple engineering principle of a better power-to-weight ratio but another great advantage was that they had broad shoulders on which it was easy to fita harness. Harnessing a horse was harder. The Celts had mastered the effective use of horses before Roman times but in some European communities did not manage to develop a way to easily ride and control horses until the 1700s. Effective use of iron also changed our use of horses significantly. With the ability to manufacture stirrups for horses they then became much more effective in battle because the rider then needed only one hand to control horse and so could hold a weapon in the other.

130 years ago one woman went on the first road trip and made history. Is it time for another change in transportation?
On this episode Brandon and I talk early automotive history. This episode was a lot of fun. We learned about Karl Benz, Henry Ford, Lee Iacocca and a few other not so known car people like Rudolf Diesel and Nikolaus Otto. While we talk about the early days, we do get off topic many times, but…

The day later became known as the birthday of the modern automobile. When Mr. Benz concentrated his intellect on his invention more than 100 years ago, he might never have foreseen the future prevalence of his invention and the transformative effects it would have on human society. In the US, 75% percent of the households living below the poverty line have at least one car. China is a late comer to the auto industry, but demand is growing rapidly. In 2014, more than 23 million vehicles were manufactured and roughly the same number were sold in China. The number of private cars in China has expanded 35 times since 2000.So, from a historical perspective, what are some of the major influences the automobile has made on human society?
The world's greatest manufacturing juggernaut -- the $2 trillion automotive industry -- is in the throes of a revolution. Its future will include cars Henry Ford and Karl Benz could have scarcely imagined. They will drive themselves, won't consume oil, and will come in radical shapes and sizes. But the path to that future is fraught. Today, the top contenders are two traditional manufacturing giants, the United States and Japan, and a newcomer, China. The outcomes of this global competition will shape how we move, how we work, and how we live on Earth.
