I'll probably mess around more with YouTube but don't hold me to it (I mean this list is getting absurdly long) I have a fluffy black cat named Ozzy who's the star of my Instagram. I love the band Tool, the world of The Witcher(games, books, show), Books, and good Highland Single Malt Scotch I coach the general population. That means everyday people who want to get stronger and feel better. I work with some young athletes, people with wildly ranging goals, and older adults. Competitive physique or strength sports aren't my passion or wheel house so I'm happy to refer competitors to a network of professionals I trust. I'll be coaching people well into retirement age. The point of getting the result that the client wants gets lost when you focus on what you feel like doing for the person without regard to what's the best thing he needs at the moment. How do you find a win-win solution without disregarding the foundational principle?  In this episode, Dean Somerset shares how bending and being flexible helps you achieve the goal. You can have all the scientific methodology in place, but it's about meeting the person where he's at and not insisting on what you want to be done.  Using a blended hybrid business model allows him to serve both the in-person and online clients, which he admits to enjoying both worlds and which works best for him and his clients. He highlights the benefits of charging a higher rate and not being scared of people leaving. People value getting results more than when they pay lower. And he shows how he does his online business.   Making sure you're fit and setting expectations right at the start is what he also discusses. Also, seeing that you're showing up and finishing what you started, he's got his tip on how to approach it positively. Becoming a skilled and confident presenter on stage takes time and patience. And he teaches how he did it and becomes the best at what he does. With the positive outlook he sees in the fitness industry, his reason for doing what he does fuels high hopes for the fitness industry for someone like him who wants to make a difference in others. Dean Somerset is a personal trainer from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Technically, he has more impressive-sounding titles, but they all mean the same thing. He helps people get strong, fit, flexible, and enjoy fitness as much as possible.  His clientele included clients with post-surgical joint replacement rehabilitation, cardiac rehabilitation & wellness, sports injury post-rehabilitation, neural impairments and spinal cord injuries, cancer patients, and even elite runners and firefighters.  In addition to working with people in person like a real human, he has clients he works with all over the world on a host of different goals. That includes injury recovery, athletic performance, weight loss, or just enjoying their time in a gym with a game plan for success. Also, he's written for major publications like Men's Health, Women's Health, T-Nation.com, Bodybuilding.com, and a slew of other websites and print media. What you will learn from this episode: 01:06 - Trusting the scientific method but also being playful 03:41 - Changing some variables to see the best results 08:41 - What his coaching practice looks like online 13:03 - Enjoying the best of both worlds with the blended hybrid business model of coaching 15:14 - Talking about the app and how it operates that he uses for his remote and in-person clients 17:45 - Making sure you and the client are on the same page – setting expectations 20:47 - A positive approach in calling out a client's attention for something that needs to be done right 26:01 - Relating the concept of sunk cost to getting value on what you spent for 28:07 - Pricing yourself properly 30:29 - What charging more boils down to  33:36 - Why he's chosen to do what he's doing and talking about his open-door policy for shadowing 39:20 - Benefits of attending a live workshop 42:10 - Overcoming fear speaking on stage 45:22 - Polishing his speaking skills and becoming great at it and how he makes the audience listen 48:26 - What he sees to be the future of the fitness industry 51:06 - Dean's final words of inspiration Resources: Want to join Dean's events? Dr Rena LaFrance MD FRCPC is a Medical director at the pediatric centre for weight and health, consulting physician for the Stollery Children's hospital, and has a private therapeutic practice for women's relationships with love and sexuality.   We talked about the her undergrad and beyond, discussed some of the challenges leading up to her medical practice and dove into her fitness journey paying tribute to the one and only Dean Somerset.    She spoke about the challenges of residency in which you end up not taking as good of care of yourself as you might like and how that contrasted with the pandemic we've been experiencing in which self care has been imperative for survival and yet constantly changing - looking different for each individual.    We talked about the importance of setting boundaries both in what you are willing to put up with and in how you treat yourself.    Sometimes we have to be okay with being honestly just okay - or maybe struggling and not feeling great but alive. We need to make it normal to tell people that we are struggling and feel safe in doing so. We can't have a stigma surrounding medication for mental health or therapy or any care that our body may need to keep us alive. The amount of emotional intelligence the last year and a half has called upon those of us who were up to the task is like nothing we've ever experienced.    We discussed how dangerous misinformation can be and the impacts the past few years will have on people.    Every action we take in our lives builds up to something more significant than we may give credit towards.   Dr. Rena is on Instagram @renalafrance if you'd like to know more about her.    To learn more about your host, Chris Liddle, you can follow on Instagram @christianliddle. Ten years ago, any supposedly knowledgeable PT would be making judicious use of the friendly blue foam roller with clients. Ten years later, the blue idol has fallen out of fashion and we've seen a trend towards minimalism. Stretching is overrated. Doing a squat will prepare you to squat and that is the end of the story. Or is it? Co-owners Eric Helms & Omar Isuf are joined by veteran personal trainer and gym owner Dean Somerset. Dean has been successfully navigating the realm beyond simply counting 3 sets of 10 for almost 20 years and his approach is an exemplary model for aspiring trainers to follow. By the end of this episode, you will learn that the blue cylinder is neither friend nor foe but a tool whose utility depends upon the context of use. Spoiler Alert.

Dean Somerset, mobility sage, joins the show to talk about all things training, mobility, how to provide a great service as a trainer, understanding your role, and staying open minded.  Dean found his way to fitness through the desire to do something that doesn’t feel like a job while being able to pursue his passion of fitness, diving deeper into the science of training, and helping people. After considering physiotherapy, Dean wanted to stick to the gym and create a hybrid of strength and conditioning with physical therapy. Dean believes movement and mobility are inseparable from strength training, and likes to investigate why clients are feeling certain things in training and daily life. He now does personal training, online coaching, as well as putting on workshops to help other coaches integrate strength training with mobility work.  Dean’s onboarding process is unique in that most of his clients are by referral, so they are already bought in to what he practices. He takes a complete medical history, including any relevant doctor’s notes and scans for specific injuries & illnesses. The goal of his screening process is to determine if he can fix the issue with fitness if the individual needs more detailed therapy. More importantly, he screens what is important to the client, what is relevant to their goal, and what needs to be done to circumvent the issue so that they can get on with what’s most important - actual training. Dean’s also not afraid to admit that sometimes a client’s problem isn’t up to him to solve, and is a believer in referring out when necessary.  We then discuss Dean’s course Scientific Application of Mobility Training. There’s so much research on mobility, but few look at evidence and make suggestions on how to use it. Dean gives us a breakdown on static stretching and the threshold for adaptation, which turns out to be extremely high and thus a low return on investment. Dean’s course includes applications for real world mobility and the reasoning behind each of the exercises with definitive finite variables.  This leads us to a discussion on mobility and the top down approach Dean takes towards it. The first factor is whether bones and joints are actually allowing range of motion to occur. Second, is your body putting the brakes on for something, or protecting itself from something? There are many things that can cause these restrictions and Dean gets down to the bottom of this cause in order to correct it with the appropriate intervention. We then dive further into muscle tightness due to neural signaling. The main component being the muscle spindle, it’s sensitivity, and level of neural integration. When introducing co-contractions with other muscles, it can override this spindle, let that muscle relax, and reduce the threat scenario that’s causing the hypersensitivity. The goal with this work, as always, is to get to the point of being able to do more of the stuff we want to do in the gym (like lifting heavy weights). We then discuss the integration of respiration into this concept and how it can contribute to mobility. Through understanding anatomy and biomechanics, Dean believes that we can influence mechanics by putting the muscles in a position to exhibit the greatest amount of torque possible.  This leads us to discuss how mobility work fits into the bigger picture for programming. The first step here is looking at the client’s main goal, which may not be fitness related at all, highlighting the importance of using the right tool for the job and meeting the client where they’re at.  Finally, we get into some of the resources that Dean has particularly enjoyed over the last several years, including the work of Dr. Andreo Spina and Dr. Stuart McGill due to their “if that, then this” systems that they have in place to catch red flags and determine the skill set needed to help the client.  Enjoy and hit that subscribe...

In addition to presenting at conferences and summits, he creates a lot of material and releases a great deal of knowledge accessible to the masses. He's a goto for continuing education. He still works with clients one on one, out of Evolve Downtown for the simple reason that we enter this industry to be with people, face to face, and as such,  this still holds importance in his career.  We talk about family influence, sports, high school life, cookies or ice cream, lasagna, pizza, dogs, and high fives. I don't really have to sell this episode to you, if you know Dean, you're already listening to it. He's a guy that many people are invested in and I am honoured that he shared his time with me today.
