Phrases like "no pain, no gain" have shaped our perception of exercise unknowingly for years. Many of us approach exercise as a form of punishment or damage control for our food choices. Many of us exercise to reach a weight goal or a certain aesthetic. We talk about getting our summer bodies and earning our food after a hard work out. We see posts about how many calories you have to burn to work off a candy bar and how many minutes on a treadmill will get you there. We know the benefits of exercise run deeper than appearances, and yet we continue to approach it from the outside in; ignoring our body's cues, pushing through pain, physically abusing ourselves in an attempt to reach a weight goal that sounds good without questioning whether or not it's realistic.Jon DeMoss, owner of Synergy Wellness and Performance, challenges all notions of what exercise is and how it fits in to your overall health. In this episode, he explains how the biggest obstacles to achieving your fitness goals do not come from your body, but from your mind. Jon challenges his clients physically, by taking his athletes down to the most fundamental movement patterns and building a solid athletic foundation. He also challenges his clients mentally, by diving into the reasons behind your health and fitness goals. Jon dives into the real questions: Are your goals realistic? What do you seek to gain from achieving them? Synergy is not just a gym, it is a place where you can find guidance towards improving your health in all areas, mind, body, and soul.'Harder Than It Looks' has been an official motto for Synergy for years because from the outside, some movements may not seem like much. But anyone who has tried it can tell you that Synergy is a place where the change begins from the inside out...and that is never easy.If you've been wanting to start a fitness routine and get healthier but you keep putting it off (or you have no idea where to even begin), this episode is for you. If you have recently had surgery and you're looking to get back into fitness but you're worried about hurting yourself, this episode is for you. If you have been an avid exerciser for years but you've plateaued, or your body feels worse instead of better, this episode is for you. If you are an athlete looking to improve your game and keep your body from wear and tear of your sport, this episode is for you!Show notes:Jon mentions DNS (Dynamic Neuromuscular Solutions) and PRI (Postural Restoration Institute) practitioners. While Jon mentions Wim Hof breathing, ice-and-fire breathing, the book Breath by James Nestor, and the book Oxygen Advantage by Patrick McKeowan, he most highly recommends ShiftAdapt.com as taking the best of all options and synergizing them. Jon also references Original Strength. Dr. Nutt and Jon discuss Functional Range Conditioning, created by Dr. Andreo Spina. It’s been a few weeks, but we’re back with another Community Q&A show! All these questions were asked in The Life Stylist Podcast Facebook Group, and you all had some great questions as usual. Before we get into it, I always like to remind you that this is not meant to be taken as medical advice. It's always best to check with a professional before making changes to your diet or lifestyle. What I will be sharing today is a combination of my two decades in the health and wellness field based on my subjective experience and knowledge at this time. 08:19 — Kimberly asks: Has anyone dealt with insomnia coming on during/after a detox? I’m struggling to fall asleep during the 2nd part of my cycle. Any tips on what I can try? Could be any number of things Blue light Sleeping in too late - watch the sun rise for a few days Avoid caffeine after 4 PM Keep your room pitch black / dark Use an Ooler or ChiliPAD to keep your mattress cool Don't do work after dark Turn off WiFi at night Avoid EMF, have your home EMF inspected, and consider shielding your bedroom Avoid eating within a couple hours of bedtime Get some hydrocortisone / licorice root from Dr. Craig Koniver to help regulate circadian rhythm. Use code Luke10 for 10% off at www.koniverwellness.com/shop Use Dream by Sovereignty.co Use Sleep Formula by Quicksilver Scientific Use full-spectrum CBD from ONDA Wellness 24:05 — Stacey asks: Embarrassing question but, does anyone have any successful ways of dealing with anger issues? I’m normally pretty mellow but, when I get into something heated, I feel like I have a hard time walking away and keep it going. (P.S. this only happens with BF’s - never family or friends.) Do trauma work to get to the root of your triggers — breath work, plant medicines, EMDR, hypnosis, etc Do family of origin work at Onsite or the Hoffman Process Write 4th step or 10th step inventories as outlined in the 12 steps to discover your part in the drama Pause when agitated or doubtful, and remove yourself from the situation until your limbic system calms down Study The Work by Byron Katie and ‘do the work’ on each situation. This helps dispel stories your mind tells you about what's happening. Life is 10% what happens to you, and 90% how you react to it Do intimacy work around relationships to discover why/how you are acting out trauma patterns from the past John Wineland is a great resource Listen to all of my John Gray interviews: episode 39 and episode 239 Melody Beattie and Pia Mellody are also good resources. Go to alanon to learn how to take responsibility for your emotions and your part in relationships Do Joe Dispenza meditations 1-2x per day to learn how to access your higher self and break the habit of being you Do a live or online DNRS program with Annie Hopper Each time you find yourself at war, repeat the mantra ‘would I rather win or be happy?’ 49:30 — Joana asks: To anyone who has lost someone close: what have you done to help process grief? Any therapies/books/meditations. This is the only group I ever go to ask questions on Facebook, as I feel like if you are in this group you are my people. I don't have a ton of experience with this, but I have endured a lot of trauma and loss. One must feel whatever there is to be felt The only way past it is through it Take some time each day to pause and be compassionate with yourself Study and apply teachings and teachers that subscribe to reincarnation - like Ram Dass, David R. Hawkins, and almost every high-level teacher in history, across all belief systems This helps you ease your grip on the person you lost in the form in which they appeared to you. I just had a very close friend leave his body. Aside from the tools I just mentioned, one thing that has helped is to feel his presence, and to communicate with his spirit directly when his memory or the grief of the loss comes to mind. Facing the reality of the death of others helps us accept and grieve the temporary nature of ALL forms, including the one we currently possess. Facing our own demise is one of the healthiest and empowering practices we can adopt In a positive sense, I reflect on my mortality often, always reminding myself that when I leave here, I'm not gone. I've just changed forms energetically, as do all persons who leave their bodies. More than anything, pray for your lost ones and build a trusting relationship with a loving god of your understanding 01:04:10 — Jasmin asks: I need advice on how you guys without a "regular" job earn money. I haven't had an income in several months now and it's getting scary. I live in a place where there's not much work, it's not close to a city and I have a kid (1.5 year old). I've been thinking about starting an Etsy page. My friend has also recommended me to join her with doTerra. I'm in serious need of help and money! What are your suggestions that you know work? Work as a remote VA if you have those skills. My VA came from an amazing company called Belay Solutions Join upwork.com if you have any special skills like graphic design, audio/video editing, copywriting, research, data entry, bookkeeping, or anything that can be done remotely If you have any skills that can be applied in person and your city supports the app, sign up for TaskRabbit. This could be organizing, errands, putting furniture together, yard work, hauling, anything like that. Etsy store is a great idea Study the online marketing masters like Amy Porterfield, Joe Polish, Russell Brunson, Gary Vaynerchuk, Brendon Burchard, and Pat Flynn. All of them have free podcasts or videos. If you have a niche interest or expertise, create content, build an audience ,and monetize it via affiliates or sponsors using the marketing tools of the aforementioned experts - you could produce a podcast, blog posts, a YouTube channel, or other social media channel that allows you to get paid for content. Research online programs for starting your own home business. Finally, get out a white board and brain dump every possible skill you possess and put them on paper Then make a list of people you know personally who have monetized any of those skills, and ask them for mentorship or support Without knowing your skills and passion, it's tough to give a blanket fix, but this could be a great place to start Delve deeply into any teachings that explore limiting beliefs and subconscious patterns of unworthiness. The Lacy Phillips To Be Magnetic program is a great place to start. As a practice, I recommend creating a vision board or booklet or even digital slide shows that show the end goal of financial success and security After all, it’s not that we want a job or career, it's what that role promises — fulfillment, security, a sense of purpose and meaning. So rather than putting all efforts into the how (i.e. finding work), put some visualization into the ‘why’ 01:18:10 — Louise asks: Has anyone found anything super helpful for low back pain due to degenerative joint disease? I know this is a natural part of aging, but I’m 36 and don’t want it to get worse, as I like to be super active. Working with a chiropractor right now and adding acupuncture and massage soon but would love to hear other hacks! I've been working on this for 20 years and made some progress, but it's been slow Acupuncture Egoscue method Alphabiotics Chiropractic Network Spinal Analysis or NSA Craniosacral therapy High-intensity PEMF by Pulse Centers Laser treatment Stem cell injections Peptides like BPC 157 Eliminating inflammatory foods Ice baths Saunas FRC or Functional Range Conditioning by Dr. Andreo Spina (probably the best approach dealing with joint health and mobility, including the spine) Inversion tables Spinal decompression Hyperbaric oxygen treatments for circulation Quinton sea mineral injections ART or Active Release Therapy The Alexander Technique Kratom for pain - be mindful of addiction potential 01:33:25 — Bob asks: Ozone water vs Rectal Ozone. Healing from mold illness, and I want to use ozone, but money is tight. I already have an ozone water generator. Do any of y'all have thoughts on just drinking lots of ozone water vs going whole hog and getting a medical ozone rectal insufflation thing? I don't have experience with drinking ozonated water, but i'm a HuGE fan of ozone therapy for a long list of benefits Simply 03 and Longevity Resources make amazing home units. I bring my generator, and an older handmade one I bought, on every road trip I make, including the one I'm on now I use ozone a few days per week, and could not and would not ever live without my generator If I had mold exposure, Lyme, or anything like that, I would be doing 2-3 home treatments per day as well as a series of 10-pass ozone IVS immediately. My go-to for ozone therapy is Dr. Frank Shallenberger 01:37:08 — Cody asks: Anyone have experience in curing/helping bi-polar without medication? This is a tricky one, and I must answer carefully since I have not overcome this issue personally Could be caused by a number of underlying issues Could be misdiagnosed I would study Dr. Kelly Brogan and get her book “A Mind of Your Own” An anti-inflammatory diet can work miracles. Paleo/keto/carnivore even for a recovery period is said to be very helpful, due to inflammation in the brain being one of the possible root causes. Meditation and brainwave balancing with tech like NuCalm, or even neurofeedback to restore brain function, circulation. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy also improves brain function via circulation If I was dealing with this, I would put most of my eggs in the spiritual basket I have been relieved of so many troubling mental and emotional conditions, and addictions purely by praying to god, and asking for guidance on how to accept or change the condition I'm troubled by. Are you concerned about your exposure to the current 3G, 4G, and 5G wireless networks now activated in most major cities? Have you attempted to test the levels yourself using EMF meters you found online and ended up confused and frustrated? EMFs (electromagnetic frequencies) are one of the most toxic elements in our living and work environments. Due to the technical nature of accurately testing for them—and the training required to do so properly—many of us resign ourselves to the fact that we just have to accept them and the consequences they bring in order to use the modern technology we depend on. But you don’t have to. In this seven-part video documentary series, you will follow world-renowned building biologist Brian Hoyer as he tests an entire home, room by room, to determine the source and level of every known type of EMF. Starting in the 80’s, supplement companies began pushing massive protein consumption. We all believed that “more protein = more muscle growth.” But I’m here to tell you that IT’S A BIG FAT LIE. It doesn’t matter if you’re consuming 30 or 300 grams of protein — if you don’t have a sufficient supply of enzymes to digest protein, your muscles will be starving for those vital building blocks. That’s why it’s crucial you take a high-quality enzyme. The one I trust (and use myself) is called MassZymes by BiOptimizers, a full-spectrum enzyme formula with more protease than any other commercially available. Plus, it contains all the other key enzymes you need for optimal digestion. And you can try it today, risk-free. Their 365 day FULL money back guarantee is the gold standard in the industry. Use code “luke10” for 10% off (and see MassZymes dissolve a raw steak) at www.bioptimizers.com/luke. AND... OLIPOP. Like most kids who grew up in the seventies and eighties, I used to chug me some soda. I had no idea that it was extremely toxic, loaded with sugar and all sorts of other chemicals. So when I got into health 20 years ago, I had to give up soda. It was a sad day. But there’s a new fizzy drink on the scene, Olipop, and it’s a healthy alternative to soda. Olipop tastes just like the sodas I grew up with, but without the spoonfuls of sugar and artificial chemicals. Plus, each can is loaded with functional ingredients that combine the benefits of prebiotics, plant fiber, and botanicals to support your microbiome and benefit your digestive health. Dr. Andreo Spina is all about philosophy and history when it comes to physical therapy. Andreo is a sport chiropractor, international speaker, and published author. He's founder of the Kinstretch method, the Functional Range Release soft tissue management system, and the Functional Range Conditioning mobility development system. Andreo also hosts the Control Yourself podcast. Andreo and Anna discuss stretching and the times one should and should not stretch, which might surprise you. He goes into how our bodies are the bodies of our hunter and gatherer ancestors and what that means for our physical health. It's a wide ranging conversation that will surely open your eyes to a new perspective on training. Be sure to follow us on Instagram (@yourbestlifepodcast)! "How do I keep my joints healthy?" is a common question clients ask towards the end of their formal rehab. I will typically respond using a simple dental health analogy and encourage them to "keep brushing your joints" using Dr. Andreo Spina's Controlled Articular Rotations (CARs) that we've covered throughout the rehab process. - Subscribe to our weekly newsletter --> HERE for free sports rehab & fitness content. It’s time for another Community Q&A show! As a reminder, all of these questions are pulled from The Life Stylist Podcast Facebook Group. Hop in, search for us, and find an amazing community of like-minded people. Before we begin, let me remind you that I am not a medical doctor, so please check with a professional before undergoing any alternative or experimental therapy. I am just sharing with you everything I’ve learned over my own journey and doing 300 episodes of this podcast. 08:08 — Cindy asks: I’m wanting to do some mushroom micro dosing and realize the source and quality is very important. Does anyone know of a reputable place where I could purchase this online? Microdosing is where you take generally 1/10 or 2/10 of a gram of mushrooms for cognitive benefit Much research is currently underway to prove the benefits. There is also a lot of legislative action moving toward legalization As of now, psilocybin mushrooms are illegal almost everywhere The best thing you can do is ask around, as many people grow them at home these days. Check out online forums, or seek out like minded people in your community that are into plant medicines, etc., such as breathwork classes, sound baths, etc. There are even psilocybin mushrooms kits that you can buy online, but to my knowledge it's quite complex in terms of growing them Check out www.doubleblindmag.com’s online course about how to grow mushrooms yourself When you do find them, consider adding lions mane and a small dose of niacin at the same time, which is the formula made popular by Paul Stamets Watch the film Fantastic Fungi to learn more 14:43 — Maya asks: What would you recommend for low iron? Not interested in iron supplements for various reasons. Thanks for your wisdom and input! The iron issue is very complex because traditional medicine has a very antiquated view on iron level recommendations Research Morely Robbins, and consider doing his Root Cause Protocol and read his iron toxicity posts. He’s been on a ton of podcasts as well, and will hopefully be on this show soon. I would study the work Ray Peatand about the common misconceptions of low iron Depending on which type of doctor has determined you need more iron, the only way I’m aware of to naturally get more of it is to eat red meat, on the rare side You can also take beef liver capsules, which I’ll talk about shortly 17:08 — Mark asks: Does your OOLER or chiliPAD ever create wet spots on your sheets? I have had the chiliPAD and OOLER for a few years and have never had this issue. If that is the case, you might have a leak. They have excellent customer service, so definitely reach out to them for assistance. I did a mini-documentary video on these products here I’m a massive fan of these devices, and literally could not live without them. I even travel with my chiliPAD on road trips, and even when I fly to hot cumulates. Nothing has improved my sleep like the Chili Technology products 20:46 — Michelle asks: Do you eat liver? If so, which types? Beef, chicken? How often? I get grass-fed raw liver from a farm in Bakersfield called Covenant Farms, where I order 1/4 steers. Another great source is www.belcampo.com. When I have the time and energy, I cut it into little cubes, then freeze it. This way I can pop them down like pills periodically throughout the week. Make sure your source is grass-fed and grass-finished. Never eat any factory farm animal foods if you can avoid it. If raw liver is not your jam, you can take desiccated organ meet capsules from Ancestral Supplements Beef liver is one of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet and is rich in so many vital vitamins and minerals. There is a reason why predatory animals eat the organs of prey first, then the muscle meat. Here are the nutrients found in a 3.5-ounce (100-gram) serving of beef liver: Vitamin B12: 3,460% of the RDI. Vitamin B12 helps the formation of red blood cells and DNA. It is also involved in healthy brain function. Vitamin A: 860–1,100% of the RDI. Vitamin A is important for normal vision, immune function, and reproduction. It also helps organs like the heart and kidneys function properly. Riboflavin (B2): 210–260% of the RDI. Riboflavin is important for cellular development and function. It also helps turn food into energy . Folate (B9): 65% of the RDI. Folate is an essential nutrient that plays a role in cell growth and the formation of DNA Iron: 80% of the RDI, or 35% for women of menstruating age. Iron is another essential nutrient that helps carry oxygen around the body. The iron in the liver is heme iron, the kind most easily absorbed by the body. Copper: 1,620% of the RDI. Copper acts like a key to activate a number of enzymes, which then help regulate energy production, iron metabolism, and brain function. Choline: Liver provides all of the Adequate Intake (AI) for women and nearly all of it for men (AI is used because there is insufficient evidence to set an RDI). Choline is important for brain development and liver function. 27:54 — Erin asks: Hydrogen water - yay or nay? It seems the human research on it is pretty sparse, so any anecdotal experiences would be welcome! Hydrogen like the tablets made by Vital Reaction are one of my daily go-to supplements. I’ve also used the Vital Reaction hydrogen inhaler for years, also on a daily basis. It’s great for mental clarity. Another great product is the Hydro Shot, which is a line of canned hydrogen drinks, some of which contain CBD, amino acids, and other complementary nutrients that enhance the potency of the hydrogen. There is a grip of human research courtesy of The Molecular Hydrogen Research Institute. Listen to Ep #112 featuring Tyler W. Lebaron, one of the world’s top experts on hydrogen. I use it constantly, especially on flights due to its powerful antioxidant capacity. It also protects against EMF exposure, due to its ability to reduce oxidative stress and scavenge free-radicals. Dr Mercola has explained this in many interviews. It’s also a potent anti-inflammatory. If I could only use five supplements for the rest of my life, this would be on the list. I’m recording a show with Robert Slovak next week in Mexico, and we’ll cover Hydrogen in depth, so stay tuned for that. 32:14 — Ditte asks: From your IG posts and stories, it looks like that you don't do that much IV vitamin therapy. Is that correct? If so, why? I love nutrient IV’s, although I don’t always post my treatments on IG. It’s hard to use your phone with a drip in your arm. I did once record an entire podcast with an IV in my arm though, which you can hear on episode #181 featuring Lily Kunin, focused on IV’s. You get much better absorption doing IV’s as compared to swallowing pills. Something like 20% vs. 90% bioavailability. I get them often at Next Health in LA They are great before and after travel, and anytime you need an immunity boost. You can get many different recipes or mixes, although most clinics will still use the term “Myers Cocktail,” which is the old-school combination of vitamins and minerals. I’m also a fan of IV NAD treatments for energy, or ATP production specifically. In an upcoming episode with Dr. Craig Koniver, we talk about IV’s and NAD in depth. 36:30 — Laurie asks: Any suggestions for muscle soreness and back pain? Doctors are prescribing naproxen or Advil 600. There has to be a better way. I have been working on my back pain for many years, and here are but a few of the things that have helped: Egoscue Network Spinal Analysis, or NSA (listen to the show I did with the creator Donny Epstein) FRC or Functional Range Conditioning by Dr Andreo Spina is amazing for joint health and mobility, which is the source of much back pain. I’ll do a show and treatment with him as soon as I can get into Canada. The Biomat and Therasage heating pads are great for pain relief. Dr. Matt Cook in San Jose is doing amazing work on pain using stem cells, peptides, and all sorts of cutting edge modalities. He’ll also be on the show soon to discuss his strategies. Kundalini Yoga - I’ve done a few shows on this with Guru Jagat, Guru Singh, and Tej Khalsa Katonah Yoga (Episode #89 with Abbie Galvin) Stem cell treatment (Episode #133 with Dr. Harry Adelson) Ice baths are my #1 hack for pain and inflammation. I do them daily, sometimes twice. As for pain meds, I would avoid them at all costs. Instead, one could use Kratom, which comes in a very potent extract or regular powder and capsules. Be mindful not to get high or addicted. However, as a former opiate addict, I have not had issues with dependency. I use it with caution. Check out the film ‘A Leaf Of Faith’ to learn all about Kratom. It’s an incredible natural pain killer. There are tons of Kratom sites online, so make sure you buy from one that lab tests for mold, heavy metals, etc. Sacred Kratom.com seems to be legit. 48:21 — Avery asks: Could someone give me a detailed detox protocol? It's for a family friend. She is having a lot of gut issues, along with 5 stomach ulcers. I'm looking for a protocol that involves supplementation as well as a diet that goes along with it. Please keep the ulcers in mind when recommending just in case you are aware if any part of the protocol could negatively impact the ulcers. I’ve been detoxing toxins, drugs, and heavy metals from my system for two decades. The best programs I’ve found are: The Black Box by Quicksilver Scientific. It's the most simple to use, and a great one to start with. Study the work of Dr. Chris Shade (Episode #210), who’s one of the world’s leading experts on detox. Another detox master is Dr. Dan Pompa, who was on Episode #121. He’s got a great cellular detox program as well. Both of them are my go-to doctors when it comes to detox For a more hardcore approach, you can do the L. Ron Hubbard niacin/sauna 30-day protocol, which you can learn about by watching Dr. George Yu’s video lectures. There is also a Facebook Group led by Bret Bouer, who also does coaching. This is what I did to remove the lead and mercury from my body. It worked, but it was a commitment. 51:58 — Priscilla asks: Okay people as we are moving into Fall and with everything that has been going on, what are you stocking up on? I keep hearing selenium, vit c, zinc, magnesium, and monolaurin etc. All of those are great immune supporters. I would add infrared saunas, ice baths, get enough sun, and focus on quality sleep. Avoiding the mainstream media is also great for your immune system. For solid information around the so-called pandem!c visit www.questioningcovid.com, where you will find more fact-based information on the situation. Also look forward to the upcoming episode with Dr Zach Bush #304, wherein he pretty much destroys the official COV!D narrative. 51:58 —Stiff asks: Can anyone recommend an audio hypnotherapy/reprogramming meditation along the lines of what Bruce Lipton and Joe Dispenza talks about? Try Hemi-Sync audio programs. NuCalm if you can afford it (Episode #265 w/ Jim Poole). There are many cheap or free binaural beats apps as well, but they are not as effective over time. The Joe Dispenza meditation MP3’s on his site are fantastic and I use them daily. He explains how they work in Episode #259. Dean Somerset, mobility sage, joins the show to talk about all things training, mobility, how to provide a great service as a trainer, understanding your role, and staying open minded. Dean found his way to fitness through the desire to do something that doesn’t feel like a job while being able to pursue his passion of fitness, diving deeper into the science of training, and helping people. After considering physiotherapy, Dean wanted to stick to the gym and create a hybrid of strength and conditioning with physical therapy. Dean believes movement and mobility are inseparable from strength training, and likes to investigate why clients are feeling certain things in training and daily life. He now does personal training, online coaching, as well as putting on workshops to help other coaches integrate strength training with mobility work. Dean’s onboarding process is unique in that most of his clients are by referral, so they are already bought in to what he practices. He takes a complete medical history, including any relevant doctor’s notes and scans for specific injuries & illnesses. The goal of his screening process is to determine if he can fix the issue with fitness if the individual needs more detailed therapy. More importantly, he screens what is important to the client, what is relevant to their goal, and what needs to be done to circumvent the issue so that they can get on with what’s most important - actual training. Dean’s also not afraid to admit that sometimes a client’s problem isn’t up to him to solve, and is a believer in referring out when necessary. We then discuss Dean’s course Scientific Application of Mobility Training. There’s so much research on mobility, but few look at evidence and make suggestions on how to use it. Dean gives us a breakdown on static stretching and the threshold for adaptation, which turns out to be extremely high and thus a low return on investment. Dean’s course includes applications for real world mobility and the reasoning behind each of the exercises with definitive finite variables. This leads us to a discussion on mobility and the top down approach Dean takes towards it. The first factor is whether bones and joints are actually allowing range of motion to occur. Second, is your body putting the brakes on for something, or protecting itself from something? There are many things that can cause these restrictions and Dean gets down to the bottom of this cause in order to correct it with the appropriate intervention. We then dive further into muscle tightness due to neural signaling. The main component being the muscle spindle, it’s sensitivity, and level of neural integration. When introducing co-contractions with other muscles, it can override this spindle, let that muscle relax, and reduce the threat scenario that’s causing the hypersensitivity. The goal with this work, as always, is to get to the point of being able to do more of the stuff we want to do in the gym (like lifting heavy weights). We then discuss the integration of respiration into this concept and how it can contribute to mobility. Through understanding anatomy and biomechanics, Dean believes that we can influence mechanics by putting the muscles in a position to exhibit the greatest amount of torque possible. This leads us to discuss how mobility work fits into the bigger picture for programming. The first step here is looking at the client’s main goal, which may not be fitness related at all, highlighting the importance of using the right tool for the job and meeting the client where they’re at. Finally, we get into some of the resources that Dean has particularly enjoyed over the last several years, including the work of Dr. Andreo Spina and Dr. Stuart McGill due to their “if that, then this” systems that they have in place to catch red flags and determine the skill set needed to help the client. Enjoy and hit that subscribe...

Dr. Josh Satterlee, DC talks to Dr. Justin Trosclair DC on A Doctor's Perspective Podcast. Make a clinic gym hybrid your next profitable expansion. Dr. Josh Satterlee goes through the why, how much square feet, fees, equipment, hiring, special certifications, class sizes and much more. You got them pain free, let's keep them with exercise. He has a sad yet interesting story on how he went from engineering and biomechanics to becoming a chiropractor. We discuss his origin story and the evolution of the clinic gym hybrid going from 800 sq ft with two doctors to 4990 sq ft (3000 of it gym space). His first hire to expand services was actually an athletic trainer and not another doctor, hear why. Plus when you hire a bunch of part timers for the gym, he needed a general manager, hear why again. Dr. Satterlee is (TPI) Titleist Performance Institute Certified and then Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) super certified and has been teaching SFMA for many years now. What courses should we take if we want to get in to the clinic gym hybrid? HINT: Be clear on what joint we are isolating. The ‘mode' of exercise (kettle bells vs bands vs whatever) doesn't matter as much as isolating the joint and motion you are trying to repair. The patient has gotten better and they are looking at you doctor for the next step. The clinic gym model gives you an add on service that the patient already is hinting at. They got pain free, now I want to keep it that way. Cam a small space halt implantation? Can we just do bands, balls, kettle bells, pilates, McGill 3 type stuff etc or do we need high tech big machines? BONUS: on amazon there is a mesh bag with a jump rope, pull up band, mini bands, floor sliders and you would want a 12 inch foam roller and you could get the clinic gym started. Motion in a joint is key to a healthy joint. Another reason to consider the clinic gym model is because often you find a patient is back at a gym again or work etc and 7 weeks later they are back in the office because of a re-injury. Why not have supervised classes (you not teaching them) to keep them injury free? Does the trainer babysit each person? Also, the number reason why Dr. Josh advocates for groups and not 1 on 1… it's not money. The ideal situation is 4 people and 1 trainer for one hour. Every exercise has a few steps to make it easier and harder. How difficult are the sales part ... because cities have gyms down the street. You can also recommend a 4 week group class as an add on during their initial report of findings. Some will sign up before they are out of pain. Also an option is doing a 21 day challenge or a 6 week weight loss challenge. Remember: We build these clinic gyms based on your Medical Expertise, not on the size of your space or equipment in it. Groups build dynamics that keep them coming for more. Dr. Satterlee goes over who to hire and what to pay and it will surprise you just how affordable it is to implement this program. Reasons to transition into the gym model which can include less paperwork and spreading the liability around. Dr Josh even opens up about his poor communication in family dynamics and how with effort he was able to turn his marriage around. It is becoming increasingly common for yoga teachers to bring movements and practices from outside the traditional yoga practice into their teaching. Are you one of these teachers? Do you want to be, but feel unsure about the most skillful way to bring non-yoga movements into the practices you teach? At the forefront of this cultural shift we find Cecily Milne of Yoga Detour and I am so excited to have her on the podcast today sharing her wisdom with us. An avid Ashtanga practitioner from 2003-2013, Cecily practiced under the guidance of senior teachers before becoming injured. This then led her to train with multiple movement enthusiasts including the Ido Portal team, Agatsu Inc and Dr. Andreo Spina, receiving her certification as both a Functional Range Conditioning Movement Specialist (FRCms) and a Functional Range Assessment practitioner. Cecily is known for seamlessly integrating the knowledge gained from her strength and movement coaches into a yoga practice that is informed, accessible and above all feels good! She works as yoga “integrator”, leading her signature Move Well classes at Downward Dog Yoga Centre in Toronto and traveling around the world introducing people to the Detour method. In this episode you'll hear: Why Cecily thinks it is important to integrate movements from outside of the traditional asana practices into yoga classes. Some examples of the kinds of non-yoga movements she likes to integrate into asana classes. A discussion about why many teachers have some trepidation about doing this and some supportive suggestions for them. A discussion about whether or not it makes sense to keep calling our classes “yoga” when we start to bring in non-yoga movements. And so much more!

“Force is the language of cells and movement is what we say” ― Dr.Andreo Spina― Movement is life. That's what I say. And at the foundation of high-quality movement lies mobility. It's arguably the bedrock that all other physical feats of fitness (nice alliteration there) stand upon. Without mobility, everything else falls to pieces. Everything. So let's dust off our foam rollers, dig in and get nice and mobile. What we cover in this week's episode of The HERO Podcast: What exactly is mobility, and how does it differ from flexibility? Why mobility could help you avoid injury and become a stronger, better mover. The most effective methods for improving your mobility and reaping the numerous benefits. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hero-movement/message
