King Missile emerged from the art-punk underground with a sound that defies easy categorization. Blending elements of spoken word, surrealist humor, alternative rock, and performance art, the band is best known for its 1992 hit “Detachable Penis,” a deadpan monologue over a hypnotic groove that unexpectedly broke into mainstream consciousness. But King Missile is far more than a novelty act—it's the long-running vehicle for the singular voice of John S. Hall, a poet, satirist, and cultural observer with a sharp wit and even a sharper tongue.  John S. Hall recently stopped by Thunderlove Studio, and we spoke with him about his career.  LINKS John S. 'I didn't believe that I'd stalked my partner.'  In episode 101, we speak with debut author Khin Myint about the multiple strands of biography he explores in his memoir Fragile Creatures. One of these is the sudden and extreme betrayal he faced from his ex-partner, who accused him of stalking her.  We also discuss the ambiguous illness his sister Theda lived with for years, at times diagnosed as depression, CFS/ME and chronic Lyme disease, and how she chose to end her life after thirteen years of symptoms and divisiveness. We also consider whether our societal silence around suicide is potentially contribuiting to its rise.   Khin also describes how he came to understand masculinity as a shadow, a pressure that follows men and ultimately shapes them. He asks, 'What is this pressure that socialises boys to adhere to some of these toxic expectations of maleness?'   Fragile Creatures is a must-read memoir, and this conversation is only the tip of more than one culturally urgent conversation.   Plus in What Are You Reading, we chat about a surprising number of speculative fiction titles.  Khin Myint is an author based in Perth. His writing has appeared in The Sydney Morning Herald, Liminal and The West Australian, and more. He was selected as one of ten participants in the Wheeler Centre's Next Chapter scheme in 2021. His debut memoir is Fragile Creatures.  Books & authors (and one podcast) discussed in this episode: The Tipping Point by Dinuka McKenzie (from ep 51);  'What do trigger warnings actually do?' from Search Engine;  Detachable Penis by Sam Elkin;  Quiet by Susan Cain;  The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth;  Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb;  Hyperion by Dan Simmons; Orson Scott Card Get your copy of Fragile Creatures from your local bookshop or library. We continue our discussion of Lucy Cook's book entitled Bitch: On the female of the species focusing on chapters 5 & 6 which covered variation in female genitalia, the evolution of the human penis,  and maternal care. We spent some time talking about the baculum, a bone that is found in the penis of many mammals, but not in humans. Sarah described how intricately shaped the baculum of squirrels can be, as evident in the image below. From Bacula of North American Mammals by W. H. Burt, 1960Sarah also discussed a novel hypothesis presented by Jakovlic'  that proposes and explanation for the loss of human baculum through male-male aggression. James wondered why human copulation lasts so long? What is the point of all that thrusting for minutes on end?  We explored a couple of hypothesis that have been proposed to explain the exuberant level of pelvic thrusting typical in human copulation. James encouraged our listeners to look at the NSFW artwork of Jamie McCartney, a sculpture and photographer who has created a large portfolio of casts of penises and vaginas, and other secondary sexual characteristics, which clearly represent the variability in human genitalia. The second part of the podcast explored the myth of maternal care and how opposing neurological process can explain aggression towards babies or care and protection of babies. We explored how these process could help explain post-partum depression and how the modern medical process in child birth may interfere with the evolved bonding process that requires specific tactile, auditory, and olfactory cues shared between the mother and newborn. Opening and closing music is "May" by Jared C. Balogh.Interlude music was Detachable Penis from King Missile.

Phantom Electric Ghost Interviews “The Taste of Vomit” David Bupp III We discuss the new album “Indoorsman” i am a rapper and songwriter from Philadelphia. i focus a lot on lyrical themes of mental health, human connection, and emotions. my new record 'The Indoorsman' will be available on digital, cassette, and streaming on March 31st. about the album: “The Indoorsman” The Indoorsman is a story of hope ; the first glimmer of movement after a season of stagnation. A concept record exploring healing and growth through heartbreak and depression; the rediscovering of oneself. Seamlessly blending hiphop and indie pop, with hints of soul, r&b, alternative rock, jazz, and classical (plus maybe the only autotuned polka ballad?). Through dense metaphors, complex inner rhymes, and clever wit, the listener dives straight into the mind of rapper and songwriter The Taste of Vomit, and asks the question, 'How long have I been stuck indoors?'. Some notable features include Duncecap (from Backwoodz Studios), John S Hall (of the 'Detachable Penis' and 'Jesus Was Way Cool' famed band King Missile), HeirMAX (from Fake Four and Cold Rhymes Records), KOURAJ, Love Ulysses, and more. Season 2 - Episode 18: Dom and His Drinking Join us this week as we follow our roommates to Mexico for a little forced bonding. We realize how little Becca knows about Mexican geography, and how good Krystie is at naming really obscure 90's alt-rock (she was able to pick out a song called “Detachable Penis”). The roommates however, get to experience lots and lots and lots of new things, including a beauty contest (for the boys), horseback riding, and snorkeling/SCUBA diving. As the episode title suggests, Dom's drinking becomes a problem for some of the roommates as he spends most of his time in Mexico at least two and a half sheets to the wind and face-down in a pile of sand.  Glenn's temper also comes into focus as he is exposed as a really sore loser (in the beauty contest) and starts slinging the name-calling when the group splits back up into cliques at the end of the episode. When The Randomizer chose the week's episode, "Venom" (S7E18), listeners would be forgiven for thinking they might be embarking on an hour's worth of subpar television, but they'd be wrong. This--the first half of Ludacris's voyage through SVU (we covered part 2 in Episode 51 of Munch My Benson, "You Can't Eat Ethan Hawke")--features some standout performances and wildly inappropriate content. The Munchie Boys obviously break it down in lurid detail and answer an assortment of essential questions: How to dig a shallow grave? Why are they still making courtroom dramas? What are Liam Neeson's most underrated films? And of course, how many times is too many times to say "nips out on a gurney?" This one will make you wish Tej Parker would open up a New York branch of his car-modding, bro-hugging crime syndicate. Enjoy! This month we did something a little different. Linnea and Reidan read On Witchcraft by Cotton Mather, and Jessica and Manik read Malleus Maleficarum by Heinrich Kramer and James Sprenger. We discussed Cotton Mather's interminable sentences (and sermons!), Malleus's more metal moments, including a tree full of dongs (I kid you not), and the surprising origins of inoculation in the American Colonies.Recommendations and stuff we mentioned:* The King Missile song Detachable Penis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIUk08iYZKE * The CW show Reign, now on Netflix* Brookland by Emily Barton* A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness* The VVitch (A24 films) (2015) * Season 1 of the Unobscured podcastPhotos of an early printing of On Witchcraft are available at bonkersbook.com

Front Row Material with Jerry Lynn & Mikey Whipwreck

What did that title just say? This is a meaty, monster of an episode! Unfortunately, Mikey cannot join us this week, as he is down for the count with bronchitis—lots of love brother. But even in Whipwreck's absence, we have an UNRELEASED episode this week, discussing Early ECW, NWA, the infamous Shane Douglas Belt promo, Dennis Coralluzzo, Dave Meltzer, press coverage in the dirt sheets, bookings and Paul Heyman, Jerry working in Japan, working civilian gigs while wrestling, "peeler joints", banned from the Holiday Inn... AND KING MISSLE'S 'DETACHABLE PENIS'! Jerry and Mikey cover the conventions from Wrestlemania weekend, including Jerry's performance at Joey Ryan's Penis Party, Mikey playing chauffeur to Miss Jerry Daisy with 80s New Wave hits on the way to WrestleCon, gettin' banged too hard for Chicken Parm, sizing up other wrestlers' units, and wrapping lips around some FRESH WHOLE PICKLES! *PLUS* Our producer—and resident metalhead—The Halifax Matt sits down with Jerry and Mikey to provide commentary for Jerry's song selection Iron Maiden's 'Fear of the Dark'. Chad's done a bit more number crunching since this was recorded (see the posts on his Twitter account, which is @chadwpost), but this is a good introduction to the ongoing conversation about women in translation. A lot of this discussion is based on this post from Three Percent.    This week's music is "Detachable Penis" by King Missile, which is sort of fitting.   Also, just a reminder that because of some difficulties with iTunes, you may need to unsubscribe and resubscribe to the "correct feed" in iTunes at that link, or right here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/three-percent-podcast/id434696686   Or, you can just put this feed link into whichever is your podcast app of choice: http://threepercent.libsyn.com/rss   Tell all your friends and family to also subscribe--that's what can get us higher in that Top 200 lit podcasts list . . . And it's also amazingly helpful in getting the podcast seen by more eyes if you can take just a moment to stop by iTunes to give us a quick rating (and a little review, too, if you're an amazing overachiever!).   And, as always, feel free to send any and all comments or questions to threepercentpodcast@gmail.com.
