We had the amazing privilege of hearing from Sara Trail of the Social Justice Sewing Academy at the Positively Creative Summit. This is an amazing talk on the power of creating to spark conversations that need to happen. She also shares why it’s important to question and put in the work to identify your place within your creative practice. I discovered Dionne Woods while planning my baby’s nursery! Dionne shares how she started her business in furniture artistry, how she discovered DIY paint and how they helped her business evolve. Today we are talking about live painting! Jennie sat down with me to share her process for live painting and the types of events she paints for. We also talk about how she schedules these events, what travel looks like and which supplies are her go to's for live painting. If you've ever thought about live painting or wondered what it's like, this is the episode for you!   From Jennie Lou Tucker: While studying graphic design at Baylor University, I began painting to escape the dreaded hours making art with a computer. I had not picked up a paintbrush since elementary art class, but blending colors came easily, and organic shapes appeared before me on my canvas. Since then, painting has become a quiet expression and gentle release from everyday life. After graduating from college, I immediately set out on a grand adventure as a Teach for America corps member teaching middle school world history in a rural town near Charleston, South Carolina. As my short teaching career came to an end, I was not quite ready to set my roots in one place. So I hit the road again, only to find myself destined for fresh mountain air. Originally I was born and raised in Austin, Texas, but currently, I reside in Denver, Colorado. The mountains and the great outdoors inspire me every day and remain a constant reminder of the natural beauty all around me.  Technically, I initially began using oils, but have since realized how acrylic’s fast-drying nature is more conducive to my quick painting style. Today I'm in the studio with Whitney Winkler. We talk about how motherhood was the catalyst for starting her painting journey. Whitney shares what inspired her early designs and why partnerships are important. She also shares how she's developed and shared a diverse product line.   From Whitney Winkler: Hey! I'm Whitney Winkler. I hail from the heartland of the US, but currently call Memphis, TN home; and a good home it is! I have a steady, gem of a husband, and three little babies who stole my heart and ran away with it. I have always loved to create. I've been a songwriter since I could talk, and I’ve always been a bit heavy-handed with the glitter, if you know what I mean.  My sister calls me the "more is more" girl, and it couldn't be more true. As I've grown, I am learning that more of most is more, and that sometimes restraint is the loveliest.  I've always been passionate about beauty and truth. To me, the combination of those two elements is unstoppable. Painting has come along later in life. I am finding that it is another way to question and answer; express emotion, muddle in, and settle into process. It is like no other medium I have encountered. I always walk away from a paint brush energized and refreshed. My love of beauty draws me primarily to the design aesthetic of art. My favorite design elements are the modern and whimsical. I am always drawn to blues, greens , greys, and pastel everything(s). Natural elements such as florals and rocks can be found in my work, paired with wafty brush strokes and ink bleeds. Soft and clean lines are best when paired. I love bold and feminine; neutral and geometric.  An extrovert at heart, I am most inspired when in community. I am so very inspired by the Memphis and online art community, and how much thought is put into the other. Today on the podcast I am joined by fine artist Jess Franks. We talked about her creative childhood, the winding journey she took to becoming an artist and why she is drawn to her current artistic style. Kristin Malone is on the show today and we chat about her creative journey from hobby, to brick and mortar, and to expanding locations. Her shop Home Malone is located in New Orleans and features local and southern artists. We also chat about the importance of customer communication and why finding your unique perspective as an artist is important.   About Kristin: Home Malone began in 2011 as a need to get back to creativity. It grew from refinishing furniture at night and during the weekends in a carport and slowly graduated to selling rustic wood signs with hand painted creole tomatoes. oysters and other New Orleans influenced items. As demand and passion grew for the small business, Kristin quit her near decade long industrial sales career in Jan 2014 to pursue Home Malone full time. Her wholesale and customer base grew as she participated in countless outdoor art markets and painted custom house caricatures for locals. In 2015, she added paint parties to her portfolio as she worked together with local businesses to help bring customers in after hours. In July 2016, she hosted a paint party at a charming clothing store that was in a New Orleans home on the streetcar line. Many customer requested for another event, and upon following up, it was then she found out the current store was relocating to another part of town. The idea of owning a retail store came to life and the lease was signed in September. While working side by side with artist for years, she has a passion for handmade products and the space was curated with goods that weren't just designed in the Deep South, but were also being produced. Home Malone retail opened its doors November 19th, 2016 with the idea of a studio/workshop space that was supplemented with some retail. But the response from locals was resounding and retail became the main focus. 6 weeks after opening, Kristin was exhausted! But only to find out she was pregnant with her first child. 2017 was a year of learning and growth on both family and business levels as she welcomed her son while learning to step back from work and allow others to take the lead on her "first baby" Home Malone. As she hit her stride with utilizing social media, launching the retail online store, and hiring more, 2018 opened many more doors for opportunity. The staff grew from 2 to 8, nearly 60 additional artists were added to the curation, the Mid City store expanded to it's upstairs space, her consignment space on the Northshore expanded to carry more items to ease the demand nearly 60 miles away, she launched over 20 new items to her wholesale catalog and and signed a lease for a second location on New Orleans' prime shopping area on Magazine Street. As Home Malone grows, so does the support for locals. There's been a shift of attention to quality over quantity and consumers wanting to know where  and how their merchandise is being made. While running a small business with steady growth may seem daunting, working with the best customers and makers in the world makes it's less of work and more of a dream. As a very visual person, I probably always was, but I didn't always create art. I was a fashionista sort in high school, and I was crazy for interior design. But I was busy singing and dancing and being an actress. I never ever thought I could make art. My mom was the artist. I was the actress. That was that. I came to art in my early thirties as a way to express myself when my children were young. Out of college, I had worked in advertising. And though I started college as a theatre major I graduated college with a degree in Social Sciences and Women's Studies. Not really related to art, I'd say. But when our now almost grown girls were little, I was always puttering around. I wanted our home to be different. I didn't want it to look like a page from a Pottery Barn catalog. I wanted it to look like us. And I also didn't want to dress from a catalog. At the time, I started making jewelry from found objects and then collage art as well. Soon I was sewing handbags and created a small business under the name Bari J. selling luscious fabric bags... and the Curated Maximalist Style was born (though I didn't know that quite yet). After several years, I decided I needed my own fabric for the bags, and with a background in graphic design for advertising, I started teaching myself to design fabric. A year later, I licensed my first line of fabric. It was a "painterly" line called Full Bloom that most assumed I had painted by hand. But I hadn't. For years I continued to create art just in the computer... and then I took the leap. Paint. And I was hooked. Now years later I know what was always true. I am an artist. And I am a painter. Since then I have created 15 collections of fabric, art for wall paper, home decor, wall art, and much more. Her work is found in private collections across the United States as well as in Europe, Israel, Canada, Japan, & South America. Over the past few years she has enjoyed sharing tips and strategies with other artists to improve their art business, marketing, and social media at the Sears Art Museum as well as the Springville Museum of Art. Today I talk with Alex Bray of Prairie Letter Shop! We talk about the wedding industry & how it’s different from selling any other product. She shares with us about seasons of growth, the difference between a product being profitable and popular, and how to get started in the wedding industry as an artist.   About Alex:Alex Bray grew up on the West Coast, the daughter of a teacher/crafter mom and a film executive dad. Her love for lettering was apparent early on; she lettered her aunt’s wedding invitations at the age of 12.   After a stint with Teach for America in the Mississippi Delta and a few more years teaching high school English in Brooklyn, Alex took a leap of faith that landed her in the middle of the country, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she began work as a teacher trainer. A manager noticed her need for a creative outlet, and an Etsy shop was born. Within two months, Alex was surprised to find herself spending many late nights filling rubber stamp orders and lettering envelopes --­­and even more surprised by how much she loved the work despite the long hours. After building her skill and networking with incredible mentors for over a year, she heard God calling her to take another leap of faith into a drastic career change. At the time, I didn't know what I was going to do with my life, so let's just say I'm very thankful that my art business turned out to be more successful than my post-grad job hunt. I'm currently based in Charlotte, NC. Led by the mantra "painting is a celebration of life" I seek to create stylish art that's uplifting & bright. Since Hurricane Katrina, Maggie has been exploring the ideas of losing the contributing factors that make a place home. She has been drawn to the repetitive nature of disastrous events along with the governmental, social, and geographic reactions to these.   Her most recent work channels the whimsical nature of New Orleans’ architecture and characters. She continues to be drawn to details in the buildings and landscape of her hometown. Seeing the beauty and tireless work in each structure, She creates a connection to each establishment through the recreation of these in architectural drawings and paintings. Maggie currently works with multiple local realtors and real estate companies providing personalized illustrations and paintings for them to gift to sellers or buyers at closing. Creating connections with others who love architecture and real estate is continually inspirational to Maggie’s craft and business growth.   With her studio on Magazine Street in New Orleans, Maggie continues to work on Custom Home Portraits - for locals and many from other states such as Maryland, New York, Oregon and even receiving requests from the UK. Gaining experience with multiple commercial property drawings as well as album art and wedding invitations, she has branched out to stationary work allowing her to create custom notecards, postcards and custom wedding invitations. In addition to the architectural work, Maggie has begun a series of "Walking Illustrations".  Each walking piece is meant to provoke a feeling of movement (physical, emotional, spiritual, mental)- growth in one's life and development. With these illustrations, Maggie hopes to portray a joy that much art, culture and people are missing in modern times. Dorothy Collier is the mixed media artist of Dorothy Art and the host of Positively Creative, a podcast for creative entrepreneurs. While growing up in the south, running around her grandmother's antique shops, she quickly found a love for all things unique...and antique. By painting oil on canvas, using backgrounds of paper from weathered books, Dorothy's pieces become narrative. She paints to create a sense of whimsical beauty and in some pieces, hopes to prompt the viewer into a child-like happiness. She uses simplistic elements to mirror her folk art influences and enjoys using quick gestural lines to give the vintage subjects a strong, soulful voice. Dorothy received her B.A. in Studio Art and Psychology from the University of Mississippi in 2009 and her MAT in Art Education at the University of Memphis in 2011. She resides in Memphis, Tennessee with her husband, John, their new addition, Johnny, and their yorkie, Oxford.
