Great Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, bloodshed at the battle of Hastings, Bubonic Plague and Roland the celebrity flatulist. As dawn breaks, Dan walks the beach at Pevensey where William the Conqueror and his Norman Invaders landed in 1066, but not before getting a quick lesson from Medieval Historian Dr Levi Roach in what's always been called the ‘Dark Ages'. Next, Dan swings by Dover Castle to Dover castle to learn about courtly life, clashing knights, princesses and jesters and travels east to the Hastings Battlefield, where Dan narrates a dramatic play- by -play of the most famous fight on English soil.In the 14th century, the invaders didn't arrive in festooned long-boats but on the backs of rats on merchant ships. Dan ambles through York's iconic medieval streets and with the help of medical historians Susie Edge and Kevin Goodman, they tell the grisly story of how the plague gripped the city and the nation in the worst pandemic the world had ever seen. The historian Simon Thurley tells Michael Berkeley about his passion for ancient buildings and the music associated with them. At the age of seven, Simon Thurley dug up what turned out to be Roman remains in his back garden in Cambridgeshire, and a lifelong passion for history - and historic buildings - was ignited. He went on to work as Curator of Historic Royal Palaces and as the Director of the Museum of London. Then, in 2002, at the astonishingly young age of 39, he was appointed Chief Executive of English Heritage, a post he held for 13 years, during which time he was responsible for overseeing over 400 historic sites from Dover Castle to Stonehenge. He is the author of more than a dozen books about history and architecture and since 2021 he has chaired the National Heritage Memorial Fund, the fund of last resort to protect the nation's most vulnerable heritage when other routes have failed. Simon tells Michael about the building mania of Henry VIII, how we can make old buildings sustainable to live in today, and what the future might hold for the Royal Palaces under King Charles III. He chooses music by Holst which reminds him of his religious childhood, an opera by Bellini which conjures up the English Civil War, and music by Purcell which reminds him of up Hampton Court, one of the buildings he loves most and which he helped to restore after a devastating fire. Producer: Jane Greenwood A Loftus Media production for BBC Radio 3

Is football finally coming home? England are through to the final of the women's Euros - thanks to an incredibly cheeky backheel goal from Maidstone's Alessia Russo. The 23-year-old scored the third on the night as it finished 4-0 against Sweden in Sheffield. Hear from our sports reporter Tom Reeves and Alessia has been describing 'that goal'. Also in today's podcast, it's been a difficult journey to work for anyone in Kent who can't avoid travelling by train. Very few services have been running due to strike action. Hear from Network Rail and the RMT union. A woman's described the moment she was knocked down by an e-scooter in a hit and run in Canterbury. Sarah Carter was left seriously injured and needed surgery after it happened earlier this month and has been speaking to our reporter Gerry Warren. Bosses at one of Kent's biggest attractions say something must be done to fix travel problems at Dover. After last weekend's chaos, there have again been queues at the port today as people try to get away for a summer break. It's being blamed on high demand at border control after extra checks were brought in because of Brexit. We've been speaking to Neil McCollum from English Heritage which runs Dover Castle. It's being claimed today that French and British emergency services passed responsibility on to each other when dozens of people drowned in the English Channel last year. A rubber dinghy sank in November, killing 31 asylum seekers and an unborn baby. And in sport, Kent sprinter Dina Asher-Smith has withdrawn from the Commonwealth Games with a hamstring injury. The 26-year-old from Orpington picked up the problem during the recent World Athletics Championships in Oregon.
A weeping woman. A headless boy, and the trousers of Winston Churchill? What other strange ghosts lurk around the cliffs of Dover? Not us though! We made it out alive!!
On the 26th of May 1940, the Royal Navy launched Operation Dynamo. Headquartered in the tunnels running under Dover Castle, the aim of the operation was to evacuate the standard British Expeditionary Force from the beaches of Dunkirk in France. The British, French and Belgian forces had been locked in a protracted struggle against the advancing lines of German tanks and troops that made their way through the Netherlands and Luxembourg, cutting through wide swathes of territory and forcing the Allies into a hasty and confused retreat. On the 20th of May, the decision was made to order all British troops to Dunkirk from where they would be evacuated to safety. The operation went on to gain notoriety as the greatest military evacuation in history and was dubbed the Miracle of Dunkirk. Join us this week as we take a closer look at this fascinating story.

History of Stonehenge The earliest structures known in the immediate area are four or five pits, three of which appear to have held large pine ‘totem-pole like' posts erected in the Mesolithic period, between 8500 and 7000 BC; however; no one understands how these posts relate to the later monument of Stonehenge. When much of southern England was largely covered by woodland, the chalk downland in the area of Stonehenge may have been an unusually open landscape which is the most plausible reason why this ancient place became the site of an early Neolithic monument complex. This complex included the causewayed enclosure at Robin Hood's Ball, two cursus monuments or rectangular earthworks (the Greater, or Stonehenge, and Lesser Cursus), and several long barrows, all dating from the centuries around 3500 BC. The presence of these monuments probably influenced the later location of Stonehenge. This week we're travelling back to the 13th century to tell the story of the woman at the centre of the 1265 siege of Dover Castle. Eleanor de Montfort was the wife of the powerful earl of Leicester, Simon de Montfort. He led baronial opposition to King Henry III, which spilled out into conflict in 1263. A year into the war, Henry and his heir Prince Edward were captured at the Battle of Lewes, and Simon become the de facto ruler of England. But Prince Edward escaped from captivity in May 1265 and began to turn the tide of the war. In August, Eleanor's husband and son were killed at the Battle of Evesham, and Eleanor was left isolated in her stronghold of Dover Castle. Joining us to pick up the story is English Heritage curator of collections and interiors for the south east region, Kathryn Bedford. This week we're at Dover Castle in Kent to take an exclusive tour of the ‘Dumpy' level of its secret underground tunnels with Cold War expert Mark Bennett. Once fully equipped and designed to keep those inside 'safe' from nuclear fall-out, the austere rooms and tunnels are now largely devoid of their equipment, furnishings, fixtures and fittings, but still retain a chilling air of the Cold War. Discover when the tunnels were built, why Dover Castle was selected and how you can take a tour of the tunnels today. To find out more about Dover Castle and our exclusive Members' tours of the ‘Dumpy' level of the secret war tunnels, go to www.english-heritage.org.uk/dover
Geoffrey (c. 1152 – 12 December 1212) was an illegitimate son of Henry II, King of England, who became bishop-elect of Lincoln and archbishop of York. The identity of his mother is uncertain, but she may have been named Ykenai. Geoffrey held several minor clerical offices before becoming Bishop of Lincoln in 1173, though he was not ordained as a priest until 1189. In 1173–1174, he led a campaign in northern England to help put down a rebellion by his legitimate half-brothers; this campaign led to the capture of William, King of Scots. By 1182, Pope Lucius III had ordered that Geoffrey either resign Lincoln or be consecrated as bishop; he chose to resign and became Chancellor instead. He was the only one of Henry II's sons present at the king's death. Geoffrey's half-brother Richard I nominated him archbishop of York after succeeding to the throne of England, probably to force him to become a priest and thus eliminate a potential rival for the throne. After some dispute Geoffrey was consecrated archbishop in 1191. He soon became embroiled in a conflict with William Longchamp, Richard's regent in England, after being detained at Dover on his return to England following his consecration in France. Geoffrey claimed sanctuary in the town, but he was seized by agents of Longchamp and briefly imprisoned in Dover Castle. Subsequently, a council of magnates ordered Longchamp out of office, and Geoffrey was able to proceed to his archdiocese. The archbishop spent much of his archiepiscopate in various disputes with his half-brothers: first Richard and then John, who succeeded to the English throne in 1199. Geoffrey also quarrelled with his suffragan bishops, his cathedral chapter, and other clergy in his diocese. His last quarrel with John was in 1207, when the archbishop refused to allow the collection of a tax and was driven into exile in France. He died there five years later. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/allthingsplantagenet/support
Welcome to another Fun Life Walks. This week we headed to Dover primarily to look at Dover Castle but we also had a wander along the seafront. We talk about why living outside your comfort zone will make you feel alive and help you fulfil your goals. Staying inside it will lead to a much less fun life! We'll also give you a Foreign Phrase of the Week and a very handy hint to help you get into that pesky plastic packaging! Come Walk With Us.
Dover Castle is the gateway to England. Dover was one of the harbours of the Saxon Shore and the base for the Roman fleet, Classis Britannica. Its Roman lighthouse probably dates from the 1st cent. ad. There was certainly some Saxon fortification there but the present castle was started in the reign of Henry II and ready for use in 1185. Its most remarkable feature is that the large keep is itself protected by further curtain walls. It was one of the last rectangular keeps to be built before castle design moved on to polygonal or circular towers. The keep is similar to that at Newcastle Upon Tyne, finished a few years earlier, and by the same master builder, Maurice the Engineer. In 1216 it was held by Hubert de Burgh for King John against several weeks' siege by Louis, dauphin of France. Its subsequent history was surprisingly peaceful and the heavy fortifications added during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars were never called upon. The lord warden of the Cinque ports is also constable of Dover castle. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/allthingsplantagenet/support
Pardon us, we need a quick turkey intermission... Juniper will fill in for us while we're gone. This week we're leaving the U.S. to cover the hauntings of the entirely too old Dover Castle and a compilation of Austrian murders including Hugo Schenk the Viennese Housemaids Killer, Max Gufler the Austrian Bluebeard, and Oswald Sibrol who just doesn't get a nickname. We're also completely broken hearted by the recent, and all of the previous, mass shootings. This is the second episode of our three-part Jon Pertwee centenary celebration. We begin by discussing Pertwee's career post-Who and wonder about Worzel Gummidge. What was the appeal for Jon and the audience? We briefly touch upon his recording career and his tenure as a quiz show host. (Ben, fiercely loyal to Pertwee as Doctor Who, boycotted it all!) Then we begin a retrospective of seasons 7 and 8 and talk about how having a regular company or family of actors on the who probably helped out actors like Pertwee and Nick Courtney. We wrap up singing Roger Delgado's praises and how much his untimely death altered the course of Who forever. Opening music is "Dover Castle" composed by Dudley Simpson. Closing music is "I am the Doctor" with Jon Pertwee.
On the 75th anniversary of D-Day on Tuesday, 6 June 1944, we meet English Heritage's senior properties historian Paul Pattison to discover the story of the Normandy landings, the other operations that fed into this turning point of the Second World War and how the iconic fortress of Dover Castle played its role. For more information about the D-Day deceptions, visit https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/dover-castle/history-and-stories/d-day-deception/
John Holland-Kaye and Kate Mavor join James Ashton to discuss investing in the past, building for the future, being yourself as the boss, changing staff culture and selling the best cake. John Holland-Kaye is the chief executive of Heathrow, the UK’s largest airport through which more than 80m passengers passed last year. It’s no slouch at cargo either, handling about £130bn of goods annually. If all goes according to plan, Heathrow should become significantly larger in 2026 when a third runway opens after years of political to-ing and fro-ing and significant opposition. Holland-Kaye is used to big building projects. He oversaw development of Heathrow’s new Terminal 2 which opened in 2014, the year he got the top job. Kate Mavor is the chief executive of English Heritage, the protector some of the country’s oldest historical sites and monuments including Stonehenge, Dover Castle and Hadrian’s Wall. She joined in 2015 when the organisation gained charitable status and began the countdown to 2023 when its government funding will disappear. On Mavor’s watch, English Heritage now has more than 1m members and recorded 6.5m visits to its main sites last year. She was formerly the chief executive of the National Trust for Scotland and earlier in her career led a management buyout of the interpreting service, Language Line. Dover Castle stands on the White Cliffs of Dover in Britain. This castle was originally not much to behold, but during the reign of King Henry II, it would become a grand structure. Tunnels lie beneath the castle and are built into a cliff, making it unique among castles. This is the largest castle in the country and has been around since the 12th century. The castle was a key defense and saw wars that were revolutionary, civil, Napoleonic and great. Today, it is a tourist destination with a reputation for being haunted. Join me for the history and hauntings of Dover Castle! Jonathan Freedland compares cyber-attacks today with the Great Siege of Dover Castle in 1216 during which the French used new offensive techniques to try to seize the English throne. In 1216, Prince Louis of France's near-successful bid for the English throne climaxed in Dover, where his forces used a multitude of techniques in a major assault on the castle - including digging beneath the castle gate and use of the trebuchet to attempt to breach the walls. Jonathan draws on this medieval example to discuss cyber security in the 21st century context. Joining Jonathan at Dover Castle are medieval historian Marc Morris; General Sir Richard Barrons, former Commander Joint Forces Command, one of the six Chiefs of Staff leading the UK Armed Forces until April 2016; Kenneth Cukier of The Economist; and Sara Perez, ethical hacker at SensePost. Readings are by Hugh Simon who played MI5 Data Analyst Malcolm Wyn-Jones in the popular BBC TV series Spooks. Producer: Laurence Grissell.
