Steve and his "jamokes" (Jake & Pete) share moments that changed their careers. Especially interesting is that the term jamoke that Steve uses is most often associated with CarTalk host Ray Magliozzi in this quote: "If my brother and I proved one thing, it's that just about any jamoke can host a radio show." 539. We talk to Bob Mann about his new book, Kingfish U: Huey Long and LSU. Huey Long & LSU. "No political leader is more closely identified with Louisiana State University than the flamboyant governor and U.S. senator Huey P. Long, who devoted his last years to turning a small, undistinguished state school into an academic and football powerhouse. From 1931, when Long declared himself the “official thief” for LSU, to his death in 1935, the school's budget mushroomed, its physical plant burgeoned, its faculty flourished, and its enrollment tripled... Rollicking and revealing, Robert Mann's Kingfish U is the definitive story of Long's embrace of LSU" (LSU Press). "Robert Mann holds the Manship Chair in Journalism at the Manship School of Mass Communication. Prior to joining the Manship School in 2006, he served as communications director to Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco. He joined the governor's staff in 2004 after serving 17 years as state director and press secretary to U.S. Senator John Breaux of Louisiana. Before his service on Breaux's staff, he was press secretary to U.S. Senator Russell Long of Louisiana. He was also press secretary for the 1990 re-election campaign of U.S. Senator J. Bennett Johnston of Louisiana, and communications director for the 2003 Blanco campaign. In 2015, he was inducted into the Louisiana Political Hall of Fame" (Manship School). This week in Louisiana history. August 8, 1935. Louisiana Senator Huey P. Long is shot to death in the state capitol in Baton Rouge, by Dr. Carl Austin Weiss, Jr. It is believed that Weiss may have been acting in revenge of Long's public slandering against his father. This week in New Orleans history. The Beatles at City Park Stadium. Wednesday, September 16, 1964. A sellout crowd of 27,000-plus New Orleanians, most of them young girls, filled City Park Stadium on Wednesday, September 16, 1964 to "meet" The Beatles. General admission tickets sold for $5.00 ($4.32 plus taxes). Opening the 8:00 P.M. show were New Orleans' own Frogman Henry, Jackie deShannon, and The Bill Black Combo. This week in Louisiana. Zydeco Cajun Prairie Scenic Byway Website Distance: 283 miles Duration: One to two days for a self-guided tour The Zydeco Cajun Prairie Scenic Byway pays tribute to the music of south Louisiana, touching many iconic music spots while ambling through serene, rolling prairies. Crawfish farms, sweet potato fields and pastures where beef cattle and saddle horses graze are just a few of the features on this byway. A ride along this byway also illustrates why Louisiana is well-known for its many festivals. The towns along the route hold celebrations to honor everything from cotton to cracklins. The byway consists of three loops and a spur, so visitors have their choice of routes. Postcards from Louisiana. Rug Cutters at the Favela Chic Bar on Frenchmen. Listen on Google Play. Andy and Brendan check in from Augusta for their official Masters “preview” episode, which rambles on with educating tidbits and amusements picked up from the ground both on golf and non-golf topics. They discuss Tiger Woods's press conference and expectations for this week, and the same for Rory McIlroy after listening to and following him on Tuesday. There's ample Aldrich Potgieter appreciation, and some more serious amateur chatter on Gordon Sargent. They do a bit on the course, their reactions to the 13th tee, make some picks and darkhorse selections, and then pick out their favorite tee time groupings for the first two rounds.

We've all heard them. You're watching or hearing a show, a character says something, and -- boom! -- an invisible choir of audience members loses their minds in riotous laughter, awws, or applause. But how did where does this come from? In today's episode, we're learning how this came to be, and how it eventually became its own worst enemy. Ben here: I'd like to give a special thanks to Max for some stellar sound design.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
To the first European colonists, Australian wildlife was bewildering. Marsupials, monotremes and the vast array of birds and snakes were strange and hostile. A bustling animal trade soon developed in both directions. While rabbits, foxes and starlings were unleashed on the Australian landscape, native animals soon found themselves as stuffed or live specimens in zoos and private collections around the world.Into this picture stepped a remarkable band of enthusiastic amateurs determined to get to know these strange creatures. Over the next 150 years they would advance the understanding of Australian fauna and transform public attitudes. Of Marsupials to Men is the story of those fearless and sometimes foolish individuals who were prepared to risk their lives in the name of science. In this episode Gregory Dobbs chats to Alistair Paton about the 'gentlemen' naturalists in the early days of the Australian colony and their curious approach to the 'exotic', the first collectors and the legacy of John Gould, the emergence of the 'snake men', and more recent portrayals of Australian naturalist in the media.

Seeing through the smokescreen of government, media and corporate lies is Max's stock in trade. For many years, he has spoken out about the way in which we've all been fooled by the mainstream narrative.
There's a new book out: "Car Wars Down Under". The subtitle is “The untold story of Australia's first land speed record”, written by Murray Hubbard. I wondered if it was a story for the mechanically minded, car enthusiast: A lone back yard mechanic with an inventive approach involving carburettors and camshafts. As it turns out it is a rollicking yarn involving hardcore business, invective marketing, ambition, a high-risk approach to communication, the occasional rouge character, and intense competition. Set around the time of the first world war which alone produced some unexpected situations. Like a good biography is not just a list of the fine details of one person's life. It's about the life and the times of people and an event. This should not surprise those who know Murray, who is a motoring journalist but, among other things, was a three-time finalist for investigative reporting in the Walkley Awards. And he wrote the manuscript for the multi-award-winning “The Day of the Roses”, a Channel 10 miniseries and telemovie. • Why a picture in front of a pyramid is significant (1:25) • Many characters had a start in the bicycle industry – how di this help? (3:17) • The limitations of the Ford Model T (5:49) • Doctors and others benefited from the development of cars (7:20) • Alec Fraser Jewel – a character and a rogue (9:11) • The first world war brought animosity to the Germans but also the Americans! (11:10) • Why one major player started a car magazine which could have become cheap advertising favouring his product but ended up being a great ambassador for improving conditions for vehicles (16:46) • Car events and the Hamilton Hill Climb • Fred Eager – Heir apparent to a big business but also becoming their top driver and why the opposition had to establish a race for the land speed record (32:47) • The vehicles – great speeds across the sand where aerodynamics may have made the difference (37:12) • A few other characters – Professor Starlight and Peter Jackson (45:37)
In this podcast episode, we tour a century and a half of dog shows. In particular, the 30-year heyday of Morris & Essex Kennel Club's show. With research from the AKC Library and Archives, we will explore how dog shows have been dramatically reinvented over generations and how those reinventions speak volumes about the ever-evolving bond between humans and dogs. For three glorious decades, the hottest ticket in stateside high society was the Morris & Essex dog show. The event ushered in the platinum age of dog shows. To celebrate the long-awaited return of the great show, attendees of the 2021 rendition (originally slated for the 2020 plague year) donned fine period costumes in tribute to the show's original creator, financier, and dog lover Mrs. Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge. And, to commemorate the re-emergence of this dog lover's quintessential event, the AKC digitized the official marked Show Catalogs and AKC Gazettes from the show's run. Bonafide Bits: The first formal dog show is believed to have been held in New Castle, England in 1859 and sponsored by a gun maker. On May 28, 1927, Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge staged the first Morris & Essex dog show featuring 595 dogs from 17 breed categories. In 1899, the American Pet Dog Club had 4,000 visitors attend its dog show at New York's Metropolitan Opera House. Heralded as the first lady of dogdom, Mrs. Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge became the first woman to officiate as sole judge for Best in Show at Westminster. Based on the historic AKC Gazette coverage of Morris & Essex, 1935-1957, Rock Ridge Night Rocket won back-to-back Morris & Essex Best in Show in 1947 and 1948. Featured Breeds Irish Setter The Irish Setter is a high-spirited gundog known for grace, swiftness, and a flashy red coat. They are famously good family dogs: sweet-tempered companions for the folks, and rollicking playmates and tennis-ball fetchers for the children. Discover more about Irish Setters at AKC's Irish Setter Breed Biography. Pointers The noble Pointer is the ultimate expression of canine power and grace. Unquestioned aristocrats of the sporting world, Pointers carry themselves proudly and are capable of great speed and agility. The coat comes in several colors, solid or in patterns but as the breed's devotees like to say, a good Pointer can't be a bad color. A large male can stand 28 inches at the shoulder and weigh up to 75 pounds; a small female might weigh as little as 45 pounds and stand 23 inches. Discover more about Pointers at AKC's Pointer Breed Biography. Japanese Chin Chin are the unrivaled noblemen of Japanese breeds. They're tiny “indoorsy” companions, with an unmistakably Eastern look and bearing. The head is large, the muzzle short, and the round, dark eyes convey, as Chin fans like to say, a “look of astonishment.” The profuse mane around the neck and shoulders, the plumed tail arching over the back, and the pants or “culottes” on the hind legs project the elegant, exotic appearance so typical of Asia's royal line of laptop cuddle bugs. Discover more about Japanese Chins at AKC's Japanese Chin Breed Biography. French Bulldog The one-of-a-kind French Bulldog, with his large bat ears and even disposition, is one of the world's most popular small-dog breeds, especially among city dwellers. The Frenchie is playful, alert, adaptable, and completely irresistible. Discover more about French Bulldogs at AKC's French Bulldog Breed Biography. Irish Terrier Irish Terriers are the prototype of a long-legged terrier. Standing about 18 inches at the shoulder, they're sturdy but lithe and graceful. Every line of the body is eye-catching, and the overall picture is beautifully balanced. The tight red coat is as fiery as the breed's temperament. Irish Terriers are a dog lover's delight: If your heart doesn't go pitty-pat at the sight of this technicolor terrier framed against the vivid greens of the Irish countryside, forget dogs and buy a goldfish. Discover more about Irish Terriers at AKC's Irish Terrier Breed Biography. Saint Bernard The Saint Bernard does not rank very high in AKC registrations, but the genial giant of the Swiss Alps is nonetheless among the world's most famous and beloved breeds. Saints are famously watchful, patient, and careful with children. Discover more about Saint Bernards at AKC's Saint Bernard Breed Biography. English Cocker Spaniel English Cocker Spaniel lovers often use the word 'merry' to describe their breed. Upbeat in the field and mellow at home, this compact, silky-coated bird dog is widely admired for his delightful personality and irresistible good looks. The English Cocker Spaniel is a compactly built sporting dog standing between 15 to 17 inches at the shoulder. The softly contoured head, with its dark, melting eyes that convey an alert and dignified expression, is framed by lush, close-lying ears. Discover more about English Cocker Spaniels at AKC's English Cocker Spaniel Breed Biography. Beagle Not only is the Beagle an excellent hunting dog and loyal companion, but it is also happy-go-lucky, funny, and — thanks to its pleading expression — cute. They were bred to hunt in packs, so they enjoy company and are generally easygoing. Discover more about Beagles at AKC's Beagle Breed Biography. Bloodhound Bloodhounds are large, substantial dogs standing 23 to 27 inches at the shoulder and weighing up to 110 pounds. Their most famous features are a long, wrinkled face with loose skin; huge, drooping ears; and warm, deep-set eyes that complete an expression of solemn dignity. Coat colors can be black and tan, liver and tan, or red. Powerful legs allow Bloodhounds to scent over miles of punishing terrain. As pack dogs, Bloodhounds enjoy company, including other dogs and kids. They are easygoing, but their nose can sometimes lead them into trouble. A strong leash and long walks in places where they can enjoy sniffing around are recommended. Bloodhounds are droolers, and obedience training these sensitive sleuths can be a challenge. Discover more about Bloodhounds at AKC's Bloodhound Breed Biography. German Shepherd Dog There are many reasons why German Shepherd Dogs stand in the front rank of canine royalty, but experts say their defining attribute is character: loyalty, courage, confidence, the ability to learn commands for many tasks, and the willingness to put their life on the line in defense of loved ones. German Shepherd Dogs will be gentle family pets and steadfast guardians, but, the breed standard says, there's a “certain aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships.” Discover more about German Shepherd Dogs at AKC's German Shepherd Dog Breed Biography. Bedlington Terrier Bedlingtons are lithe, energetic Englishmen. The crisp, curly coat; arched back; tasseled ears; scimitar-shaped tail; and fleecy, pear-shaped head are identifying features of this one-of-a-kind breed. As the curvy contours indicate, there's a sighthound Whippet most likely in their family tree. Bedlingtons move with a light, springy step and when roused to pursuit, can run like the wind. Rollicking, charming, and full of fun, Bedlingtons want most to be their family's center of attention and are known to be protective of loved ones. For an active family looking for a no-shedding, lively, and loyal companion, the search might end here. Discover more about Bedlington Terriers at AKC's Bedlington Terrier Breed Biography. Poodle (Miniature) Poodles come in three size varieties: Standards should be more than 15 inches tall at the shoulder; Miniatures are 15 inches or under; Toys stand no more than 10 inches. All three varieties have the same build and proportions. At dog shows, Poodles are usually seen in the elaborate Continental Clip. Most pet owners prefer the simpler Sporting Clip, in which the coat is shorn to follow the outline of the squarely built, smoothly muscled body. Forget those old stereotypes of Poodles as sissy dogs. Poodles are eager, athletic, and wickedly smart “real dogs” of remarkable versatility. The Standard, with his greater size and strength, is the best all-around athlete of the family, but all Poodles can be trained with great success. Discover more about Miniature Poodles at AKC's Miniature Poodle Breed Biography. For more information about a specific breed visit the breed's parent club or AKC.org. Shareables In 1927, Mrs. Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge staged the first Morris & Essex dog show, featuring 595 dogs from 17 breed categories. The first Morris & Essex dog show ushered in the platinum age of dog shows for high society dog fanciers. Today's modern Morris & Essex dog show is both an excellent show and a fond throwback to the show's heyday.

(Originally broadcast on February 19, 2021) Today, on this archive edition of Midday, Tom speaks with the award-winning writer, Chang-rae Lee. He is the author of six novels. The Surrendered, which he published in 2008, was a Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Another book, On Such a Full Sea was a Finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the winner of the Heartland Fiction Prize. His latest novel is a stunning, wild tale whose protagonist is a 20-year-old, somewhat aimless college student from New Jersey named Tiller Bardmon. The book is a collection of Tiller’s reflections on the relationships he has with a charismatic businessman, and later, a young mother and her son. It’s called My Year Abroad. Episode 5: William Henry Harrison v. The World. Alex jumps in the way, way back machine to the Campaign of 1840 to tell the story of the election of Ohio’s 1st President, William Henry Harrison. We learn why 1840 is truly the first modern presidential campaign from journalist and historian, Ron Shafer, as he walks us through the exciting campaign of “Tippecanoe and Tyler Too.” Go buy Ron’s great book, The Carnival Campaign, click here. https://www.amazon.com/Carnival-Campaign-Rollicking-Tippecanoe-Presidential/dp/1613735405 The 1840 Campaign between North Bend, Ohio’s General Harrison and incumbent President Martin Van Buren was the source of numerous “firsts” in presidential campaign history. From popularizing the word Buckeye to the first presidential campaign speech and almost all of this incredible history happened here in Ohio. Mud throwing, huge campaign rallies and even the first President to die in office, this election had it all. Historian, podcast host and Harrison enthusiast, Jerry Landry, join us to talk about the election of Harrison and his untimely death only one month into office. Jerry produced the William Henry Harrison Podcast and now hosts the history show, The Presidencies of the United States. We discuss what exactly is the Whig Party, as Harrison was the 1st Whig to be President. Jerry helps us finally debunk the old theory that Harrison died from pneumonia caused by giving the longest ever inaugural speech in the cold. So much of what we see in 21st Century presidential elections got its start 180 years ago in the “Log Cabin and Hard Cider” campaign. Thanks to Ron Shafer for joining us to discuss this transformative moment in Ohio and presidential history. The ;conversation with Tim Mohr will be moderated by WBAL-TV anchor Andre Hepkins. The story of East German punk rock is about much more than music; it is a story of extraordinary bravery in the face of one of the most oppressive regimes in history. It began with a handful of East Berlin teens who heard the Sex Pistols on a British military radio broadcast to troops in West Berlin in 1980, and it ended with the collapse of the East German dictatorship. When the East German punks became more numerous, more visible, and more rebellious, security forces—including the dreaded secret police, the Stasi—targeted them. They were spied on by friends and even members of their own families; they were expelled from schools and jobs; they were beaten by police and imprisoned. Instead of backing down, the punks fought back, playing an indispensable role in the underground movements that helped bring down the Berlin Wall.Rollicking, cinematic, deeply researched, highly readable, and thrillingly topical, Tim Mohr's Burning Down the Haus brings to life the young men and women who successfully fought authoritarianism three chords at a time—and is a fiery testament to the irrepressible spirit of resistance.Tim Mohr is an award-winning translator of authors, including Alina Bronsky, Wolfgang Herrndorf, and Charlotte Roche. He has also collaborated on memoirs by musicians Gil Scott-Heron, Duff McKagan of Guns n’ Roses, and Paul Stanley of KISS. His own writing has appeared in the New York Times Book Review, New York Magazine, and Inked, among other publications, and he spent several years as a staff editor at Playboy magazine, where he edited Hunter S. September 11, 2017 - his week, our time machine travels back to 1840 for a belt of hard cider courtesy of presidential candidate -- William Henry Harrison. A hero in the War of 1812, "Old Tippecanoe" and served in a variety of public offices, before winning the Whig nomination and making a bid for the presidency with Virginia Democrat John Tyler. In 2017, we expect the atmosphere of a Coney Island summer to surround our campaigns. We demand style and charisma. Well, 1840 is when it all began. The big money, wild rallies, self-promotion, slogans and stagecraft. Pulitzer Prize-nominated reporter Ronald G. Shafer tells this colorful story in his book, The Carnival Campaign: How the Rollicking 1840 Campaign of "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too" Changed Presidential Elections Forever. You can check out our guest online at CarnivalCampaign.com or follow @Ron Shafer1 on Twitter.

After the travelling for about one week northward on the High Road, the caravan stops off at the Carnath Roadhouse. The PCs - Seren (Half-Elf Eldritch Knight), Lathandis (Wood Elf Cleric), Erzo (Drow Rogue) - have been retained as security guards for the trip. Reportedly, this roadhouse is a locale where road building supplies are unloaded for ongoing work currently being conducted by the High Road Charter Company.
