Originally uploaded May 15, re-edited August 14th. Chris Holman welcomes back Carrie Rosingana, , CEO, CAMW! Capital Area Michigan Works!, Lansing, MI, but serving Ingham, Eaton and Clinton Counties. [THEME: Carrie discusses recent partnership with Lansing Community College and Lansing Fire Department to create the First Responder Apprenticeship program.] Question: Tell me more about the new First Responder Apprenticeship program? CAMW! partnered with Lansing Community College and the Lansing Fire Department to create the First Responder Apprenticeship program. This program was created to address the critical shortage of emergency medical workers in the Capital region. The program will provide firefighters with Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training. This will greatly increase the services firefighters can provide including: CPR. First aid. Life support care. It is part of a national effort to expand apprenticeships into nontraditional career areas to address critical workforce shortages. Students will be provided with training through LCC's EMT Academy, a Department of Labor registered apprenticeship. Benefits of the program include: On-the-job training. Mentoring. State-of-the-art instruction. Question: How does CAMW! support apprenticeship programs in the Lansing region? Apprenticeships offer collaboration opportunities to build tomorrow's workforce through training environments within industries. Registered apprenticeships continue to expand in the Capital region across all industry sectors. CAMW! will assist regional Emergency Medical Service providers to explore and develop Registered Apprenticeship programs of their own. Carrie, please add any additional information here. Question: Why should people be interested in apprenticeship programs like the EMT Academy? How do they differ from other forms of training? Apprenticeships differ from a full-time job because they consist of a combination of on-the-job training and classroom instruction. Workers earn a full-time wage with benefits while participating in this form of work-based learning. Apprenticeships lead to: High-paying jobs. Increased job retention. Apprenticeships fill immediate workforce needs. The EMT Academy at LCC is committed to cultivating a diverse workforce. It represents the college's commitment to supporting: Individuals from lower income brackets. First-generation students. Veterans. And those in need of developmental academic or entry-level career skills. Lansing Community College will be offering free tuition for the EMT Academy through funding from a Department of Labor Strengthening Community College grant and Workforce Development Institute funds. Because of this funding, Lansing Fire Departments have been able to send their recruits to an established program that offers a training site and equipment, allowing them to save significantly on financial resources. Question: Where can interested individuals go to learn more about this new program? To learn more about the First Responder Apprenticeship program, please contact Dr. Will Emerson at: emersow1@star.lcc.edu. Today we are joined by Anne, a student at the University of Michigan. She's a junior, and has a part-time job as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). We share the story of Chiara Petrillo, who was born in Rome, in 1984, and died on June 13, 2012, at the age of 28. After marrying Enrico, she had three children—Maria, Davide and Francesco—, two of which died shortly after they were born. The third one, Francesco, lived, but Chiara had been diagnosed with cancer and died one year after his birth. During that last year of her life, she was able to meet Pope Benedict XVI and tell him her story. Chiara is not yet a canonized saint, but she is in the process of being considered for canonization. She's an amazing example of a holy woman, and a great inspiration to many in the world. We talk about her faith in God, her trust in Divine Providence, her love for the life of a child in the womb, and her absolute denial to perform an abortion on her three children. We also speak about one of her spiritual legacy, especially through a phrase she used as an inspiration, “piccoli passi possibili”, which means “small possible steps.” In our language we could say “baby steps!”, or “one step at a time.” Below you will find a prayer to ask for graces through her intercession. May the light of the Gospel of Christ, which shines in Chiara, rekindle the confidence of eternal life in the hearts of our brothers and sisters. What is CAHOOTS and why are more and more people talking about this? A Conversation with Ben Adam Climer

2020 will go down in history for many things, including the significant push for a diversion of mental health related calls from law enforcement to a different model.  The CAHOOTS program, initiated in Eugene, Oregon, has captured the imagination of many throughout the country who are looking for a tested approach which shifts the burden to a peer-led team.  CAHOOTS stands for Crisis Assistance Helping out on the Streets and was started in Eugene, Oregon in 1989.  It originated as a collaboration between a local nonprofit clinic and the city and has grown into a 24/7 service.  Multiple vans serve the city and offer an alternative to the traditional reliance upon first responders of police or paramedics which can often be a traumatic experience for all involved.  Ben Adam Climer, who started his career working in homeless outreach in Los Angeles, moved to Oregon in 2014 and worked on the CAHOOTS team for five years, first as a crisis worker  and then as a trained Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).  Climer is now consulting with a number of local jurisdictions who are looking to shift crisis calls away from the traditional law enforcement response to specialized teams with clinical workers, trained crisis workers and/or peer responders.   Climer walks us through how CAHOOTS is dispatched in Oregon and describes the types of calls they are uniquely equipped to handle.   He also shares data about the positive outcomes, both financial and human in scale.  Most noteworthy is the importance of de-escalating situations by not resorting to forceful interventions and avoiding costly hospital and jail interventions. To contact Ben-Adam ClimerBen Adam Climer | LinkedInArticles:CAHOOTS: A Model for Prehospital Mental Health Crisis Intervention (psychiatrictimes.com)Huntington Beach latest to create non-police team to handle mental health, homeless issues – Orange County Register (ocregister.com)You Tube:(153) Los Angeles CAHOOTS Presentation - YouTube

For Michael Guymon, being an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a career filled with tragedy, bitter realizations, and beautiful moments of brotherhood. Guymon has been an EMT for about three years and six months full time on the streets of Reno. As an EMT, Guymon, a UNR graduate, says he has seen sides of Reno he wished did not exist. “It's (Reno) dirtier than I thought it was going to be. Drugs are a lot more rampant here than I first anticipated, and the amount of meth in Reno is pretty absurd.” Meth, he says, remains a serious issue in certain communities. “So opiates are kind of a more expensive drug, same with like all your like hallucinogenics and cocaine,” Guymon said. “Meth is massive. Super cheap meth is easily obtainable, and you're high lasts for way longer. Fortunately, I don't see too much overdose in terms of heroin and the homeless population. I have encountered meth with people who have hotel rooms or live in some very low-priority housing kind of thing. That's where you start to see meth use.” Mental health is also an issue he believe has not received enough sustained attention. “A big issue is with drugs and with just the inability for us to actually take care of mental health patients on the street, and they don't get help there. So they just continue to try dosing themselves with random drugs or use like meth or something like that. They're very easily taken advantage of by other people on the street. It's really sad because there's very little that we can do for mental health. And there's very little the ER can do for mental health. We only have, like, I would say probably like four or five major mental health facilities and Reno. And if you don't have insurance, it's kinda difficult to get into those.” Dealing with downtown ambassadors he says is also a work in progress. Listen to the full episode with Gracie Gordon to find out more of his candid thoughts.

Rachelle Babler -Motivational Speaker TED TALK COACH-Former Paramedic & Forensic Analyst Rachelle Babler was born and raised in Southern California. She began her career as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and then became a Paramedic (EMT-P) for about 6 years. Contract negotiations for the city forced several medics to seek alternate jobs/careers so Rachelle went back to school and fell in love with forensics. She worked as a Latent Print Examiner in a crime laboratory for twenty years, processing and examining latent prints from crime scenes and evidence. She also conducted research that she presented at conferences all around the country and globally and conducted training for law enforcement agencies. After some hardship in her personal life and diving into some deep, personal growth, it had her rethink her priorities. In May of 2017, she quit her job in law enforcement (cold turkey - not knowing exactly what she would do) and shifted her focus to helping others in new ways. She currently is self-employed where she helps thought leaders amplify their voice through various media platforms. Powered by Firstory Hosting
