Confusion is a major barrier for alt-meat companies struggling to gain traction with shoppers — confusion about healthfulness, ingredients, labels. Add to that a disconnect between consumer expectation and reality on matters of taste and texture. In short, consumers don't trust the information they're getting. Trust in the food system is what the Center for Food Integrity is all about, and CFI has new data that segments consumers by levels of trust, in their food and in the players in the food industry. From the “progressive disruptor” to the “comfort seekers,” Charlie Arnot, CEO of CFI, has studied these micro-communities. He knows who they listen to, and why — drawing a road map for alt-meat companies to build brand relationships with their end-users.

There is a widening disconnect between those who grow food and those who consume food in Canada. To better communicate to Canadians, we must understand what their perceptions are of the food industry. Each year the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity performs a country wide survey to get a gauge on what Canadian consumers think about our food system and farming in general. Ashley Bruner from the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity has been part of this survey for year and will give us insight into what Canadians think. Host: Clinton Monchuk  Clinton Monchuk grew up on a mixed dairy, beef and grain family farm outside of Lanigan, Saskatchewan. He received his Bachelors of Science in Agriculture majoring in Agricultural Economics from the University of Saskatchewan and Masters of Business Administration in Agriculture from the University of Guelph. Clinton has enjoyed numerous roles across Canada, the United States and Mexico as a researcher, educator, manager, economist and director of trade policy. In 2016 Clinton accepted the role of Executive Director with Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan to promote farming and ranching to consumers. Clinton understands the value of increasing public trust in agriculture and actively promotes engagement between the agriculture industry and consumers. Clinton, Laura and their children Jackson and Katelyn, continue to be active partners on their family grain and layer farm in Saskatchewan and cattle ranch in Oklahoma. Guest Ashley BrunerAs the Research Manager at the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity, Ashley specializes in communicating public opinion research to the food system. Ashley translates numbers and trends over time into actionable insights to help Canada's food system better connect with everyday Canadians on the issues they care about. With an eye for detail and passion for the food system, Ashley tells the story behind every data point. Ashley holds a Master of Public Policy degree from Simon Fraser University and has over ten years of research, presentation, and policy experience. Before joining CCFI, Ashley worked as a senior research manager at Ipsos Public Affairs working on hundreds of research projects for clients in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Ashley has experience with a wide range of research methodologies ranging from online, telephone, focus groups, in-depth interviews, and town halls. The long-term success and growth of Canada's food system must be grounded in public trust. Over the past years with CCFI, Ashley has helped food system stakeholders understand and build trust with Canadians on key food system both big and small. Jane Dukes, associate director, Value Chain and Consumer Affairs, speaks with Charlie Arnot the CEO of The Center for Food Integrity and president of Look East, a communications consulting company based in Kansas City. The Center for Food Integrity is a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to building consumer trust and confidence in today's food system. Charlie is recognized as an industry leader on food and agriculture issues and is a thought-provoking writer and speaker. He discusses increased skepticism stakeholders are facing from customers, consumers and investors across the food value chain. He shares how we can work together to provide critical transparency on topics like food safety, ingredients, animal welfare, labor and business practices and environmental impact. “Consumers are not monolithic, and there are 350 million different opinions about what we should be doing when it comes to food and agriculture. And so it's really important and challenging for us to be able to engage. But really the questions, if you distill it all down, come down to, is the food system operating in a way consistent with my values?” - Charlie ArnotTransparency is personal to consumers. They are concerned about their health and the health of animals and the planet. We feel this topic is so important that we're sponsoring the upcoming Transparency Summit hosted by the Center for Food Integrity this November in Chicago this November. “What we found in organizations is the champion for being more transparent can come from a wide variety of sectors within the company. Could be corporate affairs, could be food safety and regulatory, could be sustainability or ESG, supply chain, research and development, innovation, marketing, C suite leaders. We've worked with companies where the champion for transparency has come from any of those individual sectors. And so we encourage those who have an interest in transparency to come and learn more.” - Charlie ArnotThis Week's Podcast:Learn the facts about transparency in animal proteinMeet Charlie Arnot the CEO of The Center for Food Integrity and president of Look East, a communications consulting company based in Kansas City. *ASK YOUR QUESTIONS HERE: http://www.speakpipe.com/CACTF* Last year, Merck Animal Health conducted a research study that explored consumer desire for transparency in animal protein. In our survey, two-thirds of consumers reported transparency in animal protein is extremely or very important. Participants shared that food safety and nutrition for “me and my family” are the main motivators for this interest. And yet, only 35 percent of consumers surveyed feel that the animal protein industry is transparent about sustainability or animal care/treatment. That's a gap we can help fill. “We're really steadfast in reassuring that the food in the United States is the safest on the planet, that those who are in food production have made leaps and bounds in sustainability, that the diversity of today's food system empowers consumers to make the choice that is absolutely best for them... And then finally, it's important that we let them know that we're constantly innovating and leveraging technology to improve all aspects of food.” - Roxi BeckMerck Animal Health is committed to the well-being of our communities, our employees, and our customers. Episode 7 of Looking Outside takes us deeper into culture and beyond pre-defined ideas, with Cultural Anthropologist and CEO of MotivBase, an AI Anthropology agency, Ujwal Arkalgud. Today we're looking outside meaning (whatever that … means?). Ujwal speaks to core concepts of culture, which is in everything around us, and how all things carry the weight of meaning, even seemingly simple concepts and narratives. Together Jo and Ujwal explore the philosophical aspects of our lives, including the need to look at counter culture, explore the opposite sides to existing ideas that we think we know inside out, and posit uncomfortable suppositions. Ujwal also provides a unique perspective on empathy, a current corporate obsession. Posing that perhaps instead of obsessing over feeling empathy, something that's potentially impossible, we instead focus on acceptance of differences and practice understanding.  --- To look beyond the familiar, Ujwal loves to dive deep into philosophy, particularly into those concepts he disagrees with (for example, that we have no free will). He actively pushes himself into uncomfortable things in his personal life, like cooking where he has no natural skill. (He makes up for it with all the other brainy stuff.) Curious about philosophy? Consumer trends continue to change over time.  Younger generations tend to be "putting their money where their mouth is" and focusing on the values behind the food produced and the companies selling, rather than just the value of the product.  Charlie Arnot is part of the Center for Food Integrity and was a speaker at the recent Dairy Insight Summit with PDPW.  He shares what trends have been looking like and makes some predictions as to where things are headed. UW-River Falls is offering a new undergraduate Bachelor of Science program in international food operations management.  This is being conducted in conjunction with the Aeres University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands.  Students will have the chance to learn about food management and science in both the US and the Netherlands and will earn degrees from both universities after completion of the program.  Brenda Boetel, professor and department chair of Agricultural Economics at UWRF joins us to share more. Bob Bosold catches up with Stewart Anhalt, Energy Sales Manager with ALCIVIA Cooperative.  They discuss the overall outlook for energy supplies and markets going forward.  Planning ahead and locking in contracts for energy purchases can help consumers to save money. Cheese and butter markets are seemingly strong lately and climbing, but why is that?  Matt Tranel, broker with EverAg joins us to discuss that and other topics.  Production struggles and other market movers look to be pushing class III and IV milk higher, at an unusual time of year.  This also is causing a slow down in cow slaughter here in the midwest, where feed is plentiful.  After chatting dairy, we also take a look at the recent strength in the corn markets, as well as soybean meal prices. Free-from, GMO, naturally grown, organic, sustainable, cage-free. You name it, there's a label for it in the food you are buying. But, what do they all mean? Which one is right for you? Your guest? Consumer's expectations around food and beverage are changing. The diversity of needs, wants and customs is vast. How do those who provide the food — farmers, manufacturers, grocers, chefs, hotels, event planners, servers — stay on top of the needs, communicate and build trust in their products and help consumers make informed decisions? Roxi Beck works with The Center for Food Integrity, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to help today’s food system earn consumer trust. In this episode of Eating at a Meeting, she and I will talk about how a "transparent, sustainable food system” can "align with consumer expectations” to create delicious tables. Nov 6, 2020 Ep 320 - What’s the Beef with Beef? Guest: Bob Lowe    There is a growing portion of Canadians who have a beef with beef. The belief appears to be that beef is bad for humans and cattle are bad for the environment and the atmosphere. In fact, according to the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity, one-third of us are negative about food production in Canada and another third are losing faith in the system.   Beef is front and centre. There are incorrect arguments that suggest we could eliminate cattle and substitute it with plant-based protein and in doing so, we’d all be better off and so would the environment. Bob Lowe, the President of the Cattlemen’s Association has heard it all and he says, “It simply isn’t true. In fact, if you take cattle off of the grasslands, then those grasslands and the thousands of species that call them home will die.”   He’s right – science has demonstrated that large grazing ruminants are essential to the health and well-being of grasslands. Cows graze, they turn over the soil and their saliva, urine and poop fertilize the land. When they chomp on the grasses that, in turn, stimulates growth.    What they are eating is sequestered carbon and they then convert those grasses into protein-rich nutrients. They also eat corn and barley and potatoes that are not fit for human consumption and they convert those carbon based organisms into protein and in the process reduce food waste.   And then there is their place in the flow of carbon. Cow burps are the by-product of carbon conversion that happens in their bodies, which is then emitted as methane which eventually returns to carbon and is once again sequestered in the vegetation the cows eat.   I invited Bob Lowe, the President of the Cattlemen’s Association to join me for a Conversation That Matters about the vital role cattle play in our well-being and the well-being of the environment.   Before we get to that conversation, here is an excerpt from the documentary “Guardians of the Grasslands”   Conversations That Matter is a partner program for the Morris J Wosk Centre for Dialogue at Simon Fraser University. Ep 317 - Food Integrity in Canada Guest: John Jamieson   There is only one thing you do more often than eat, and that is breathing. Food is vitally important to your well-being, your lifestyle and your ability to work. “In Canada, we are extremely fortunate,” says John Jamieson of the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity. He goes on to say, “The average Canadian grocery store has 50,000 items in it. We have tremendous choice and we know that food is safe to consume.”   Despite the robust nature of our food system, the CCFI, in its 2019 Public Trust Research survey, found that only one in three Canadian consumers believe Canada’s food system is headed in the right direction and another large segment of the population isn’t sure.   How can this be? Canada not only feeds itself, it also exports in excess of $57 billion of food annually to countries around the world. Jamieson says, “Those countries boast about Canadian food as a benchmark in quality and yet we are seeing a disconnect here at home.”   Jamieson says, “Agriculture today is based on science and technology. We are able to produce more per acre. We're able to feed more people per acre because we do a good job of what we do and we use the tools that are available to us and it's very safe.  There's so many checks and balances. There are inspectors at every step along the way. Industry associations have codes of practice and processors have regulations and requirements they must follow.”   We invited John Jamieson, the CEO of the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity to join us for a Conversation That Matters about the safety and integrity of Canada’s food supply.   Conversations That Matter is a partner program for the Morris J Wosk Centre for Dialogue at Simon Fraser University. Ep 293 - In Udder News Guest: Julaine Treur   Over the past 70 years, there has been a silent exodus from farming in North America. In the United States, the number of farmers fell from 30 million to less than 3 million between 1950 and 1980. The reasons are many: the allure of the city, the bone numbing and exhausting work in an ever and challenging landscape, crop failures, weather conditions, poor market prices, lack of access to farm workers.   Today, we may be witnessing a small and slow reversal of that trend - a trend that, in part, is motivated by dedicated farmers like the Truer family. “We love it,” says Julaine Treur. “Farming was in my blood, it was in my husband’s blood but our families had moved away from the farm. We decided to return to dairy farming and we couldn’t be happier.”   A visit to Creekside Dairy makes farming appear idyllic; it is only so because the Truer’s make farming look easy. That in itself is difficult to do. Central to their success is their passion for their work, their animals and for their place in Canada’s food supply system.   A system that is under intense scrutiny - according to the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity, “As of last year, only one in three Canadians believe our food system is headed in the right direction.”   The top issues of concern are a rise in the cost of food (especially healthy food), coupled with rising health care costs, rising energy costs and the safety of food imported from elsewhere. Then add in climate change, the treatment of animals and concerns about an ample supply of food.   We invited Julaine Truer of Creekside Dairy to join us for a Conversation That Matters about her and her family’s approach to farming and why she believes that Canada has an exceptional food security and supply system.   Conversations That Matter is a partner program for the Morris J Wosk Centre for Dialogue at Simon Fraser University. GMOs, pesticides, livestock health and safety: it can feel like farmers and consumers are speaking different languages when hot button issues are discussed. What creates this communication breakdown? In the 2019 Public Trust Research Report compiled by the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity, 91 per cent of Canadians said they knew little to nothing about modern Canadian farming practices, but 60 per cent are interested in knowing more about agriculture and how their food is produced. That first number presents the obstacle farmers have to overcome in speaking with consumers; the second shows the potential opportunity. In this episode, Kelly Daynard, executive director of Farm and Food Care Ontario, discusses how everyone has a role to play in debunking myths and bad information, and that consumers are often asking “should we” rather than “can we.” John Jamieson, CEO of the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity, shares the importance of building public trust in agriculture as a way to improve the conversation. Both emphasize that sharing your story and your passion for agriculture will help make a personal connection with consumers.
