Subscriber-only episodeSend us a text*Bonus Episode for Subscribers*In this episode of Causes or Cures, we dive into the "War on Misinformation" and unravel its complexities. Is misinformation truly an "infodemic," like a virus infecting our brains? Is the militaristic approach missing the mark? We explore how misinformation is policed online, the rise of fact-checkers, and some of the biggest misinformation scandals, including the opioid epidemic and the tobacco industry's attempts to define "sound science" while squelching the truth about second-hand smoke as a carcinogen.Could our obsession with debunking and banning misinformation be a costly, unwinnable war? If we cannot agree on a definition of "misinformation," is this a wise public health battle to pursue, especially given the historical shortage of funding and staff? What roles should fact-checkers, tech companies, and governments play in policing knowledge, particularly in America, a country that deeply values personal liberties? Dr. Eeks also shares personal anecdotes, including her perspective on religious information and how nuns served as her fact-checkers growing up.We also highlight the blurred lines between truth and deception in health and geopolitics. From covert anti-vaccine propaganda campaigns to the false statistics that fueled the opioid crisis, we ask: Can any one entity be trusted to define what's true? Additionally, we will review expert insights from a previous podcast guest to better understand what's truly at stake in this ongoing battle.Subscribe and tune in for a deep dive into how misinformation has become a defining issue of our time and what it means for the future of public health and freedom of thought.*Disclaimer: This podcast consists entirely of my own thoughts and does not reflect the views of anyone or any organization I work with or consult for.*New* SUBSCRIBE for ALL Bonus Episodes! You can contact Dr. Eeks at bloomingwellness.com.Follow Eeks on Instagram here.Or Facebook here.Or X.On Youtube.Or TikTok.SUBSCRIBE to her monthly newsletter here.

A fine Saturday crossword by John Guzzetta -- and if that name seems familiar, that's perhaps because he has had 40 NYTimes crosswords published since 2012. Of those, 50% of them were Friday or Saturday puzzles, so he's definitely in his element here. Though themeless (as is tradition for a Saturday NYTimes crossword), there were of course many fine clues, which we dive into in today's episode. Beyond those, however, we would be remiss if we did not at least mention 27D, Concupiscent one, EROS (woah!), and 2D, Reluctant to join?, INERT (nice!).It's Saturday, and for our JAMCOTWA we chose ... nope, cliffhanger here, to find out though, all you need to do is subscribe, download and listen up!Show note imagery: Light Emitting Diodes, aka LEDsContact Info:We love listener mail! Infodemic is a noun that refers to a glut of useless information. Our word of the day has only been around for a few short years, but it combines to words ‘information' and ‘epidemic' that have been around much longer. Information is Latin in origin and refers to ‘facts provided or learned about something or someone.' Epidemic comes from Greek and means ‘upon the people.' When lousy information is foisted upon the people, you've got an infodemic on your hands. Last summer's infodemic about all kinds of political figures made me so skeptical about the news, I was told it would be partly cloudy with a high of seventy, I didn't believe it. I guess that's what a downpour of useless information can do.
Navigating the Credibility of Web-Based Information During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Using Mnemonics to Empower the Public to Spot Red Flags in Health Information on the InternetJessica Stokes-Parish Free PMC articleAbstractMisinformation creates challenges for the general public in differentiating truth from fiction in web-based content. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this issue has been amplified due to high volumes of news and changing information. Evidence on misinformation largely focuses on understanding the psychology of misinformation and debunking strategies but neglects to explore critical thinking education for the general public. This viewpoint outlines the science of misinformation and the current resources available to the public. This paper describes the development and theoretical underpinnings of a mnemonic (Conflict of Interest, References, Author, Buzzwords, Scope of Practice [CRABS]) for identifying misinformation in web-based health content. Leveraging evidence-based educational strategies may be a promising approach for empowering the public with the confidence needed to differentiate truth from fiction in an infodemic. Keywords: COVID-19; critical appraisal; digital literacy; health literacy; infodemic; infodemiology; misinformation; online health; science communication; social media.
The World Health Organization is now working to get global authority to manage pandemics. And in their new guidelines on the “Preparedness and Resilience for Emerging Threats,” the infodemic is back. It states that as a form of “community protection,” it needs a form of “infodemic management,” as well as “collaborative surveillance.” It states, “Infodemic cannot be eliminated it can only be managed. This is why WHO and partners have developed the approach of infodemic management,” armed with new capabilities for the job. It describes these as “tools and approaches for social listening,” including artificial intelligence that monitors social media, as well as other systems such as experts for “community engagement.” In this episode of Crossroads, we'll discuss this issue and others. ⭕️ Stay up-to-date with Josh with the Crossroads NEWSLETTER

In the past few decades, we have witnessed the rise and consolidation of “evidence-based medicine” among health professionals. This refers to a systematic approach to medicine in which doctors and other health care professionals use the best available scientific evidence from clinical research to help make decisions about the care of individual patients. But the COVID-19 pandemic has managed to transform what constitutes reliable medical evidence into a topic of public concern and debate. These debates have taken place within and beyond the medical establishment, such as in news reports and social media posts. And suddenly everyone began offering an opinion on the efficacy of measures such as quarantines, lock downs, school closures, and mandatory face masks. How then should we understand “evidence”? Does evidence mean the same thing in different contexts and constituencies? In their new book, Rethinking Evidence in the Time of Pandemics: Scientific Vs Narrative Rationality, and Medical Knowledge Practices, Eivind Engebretsen and Mona Baker argue that we ought to adopt a more nuanced and socially responsive approach to medical expertise that incorporates scientific and lay processes of making sense of the world and how we decide to act in it. Using the narrative framework, they offer a model of analysis that sheds greater light on why different people arrive at different decisions based on the same sources of evidence and why we must acknowledge their reasons for doing so as rooted in different types of rationality rather than dismissing them as irrational. Eivind Engebretsen is a Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo, where he is also the Executive Chairman of the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare Education.Mona Baker is Director of the Baker Centre for Translation and Intercultural Studies at Shanghai International Studies University. In February 2020, just two months into the Covid-19 Pandemic, the World Health Organization announced another contagious threat to humans, an infodemic. They defined the phenomenon as an excess of information, including false or misleading information, in digital and physical environments during a disease outbreak. Today, almost a year after the pandemic ceased, the infodemic persists. The global information system remains plagued by fervent misinformation that percolates and continues to intensify whatever outbreak it covers. In this episode, Deepak and Khushi discuss the Nepali media landscape, particularly in light of the worldwide infodemic wherein dubious information is excessive. Deepak draws on his extensive background in journalism and fact-checking to discuss how Nepali media has evolved and the contemporary issues it faces as new digital media dominate its grounds. They discuss instances of deceptive and manipulative disinformation he discovered online during the recent elections and the pandemic and analyze how misinformation exacerbates sensitive subjects by intensifying people's reactions to them. The two end by exploring possible collective action to instill integrity in our media and garner vigilance in Nepali audiences. Deepak is the editor of Nepal Check, an independent, non-partisan fact-checking platform. He was the editor of South Asia Check, Nepal's first fact-checking outlet, and has worked as a correspondent for international news agencies like AFP, DPA, and Anadolu Agency. His work has appeared in major international publications such as the New York Times, The Guardian, Time, Al Jazeera, and Nikkei Asia. He currently focuses on innovations in fact-checking and digital investigation. Click here to support us on Patreon!!
Buona visione. Learn more about your ad choices. We welcome one of the nation's most respected health and health policy thought leaders to Raise the Line on this episode. Susan Dentzer's remarkable career includes many years of reporting on healthcare for major national news outlets, being a senior policy adviser to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and serving as a board leader in medical education and health system delivery, just to name a few of her contributions. Earlier this year, Ms. Dentzer was appointed president and CEO of America's Physician Groups, an organization representing more than 350 physician groups providing coordinated, value-based healthcare for more than ninety million patients nationwide. She's also currently board chair of Research America, which advocates on behalf of biomedical and health-related research and innovation. Tune in to this elucidating discussion with host Shiv Gaglani that delves into what the pandemic revealed about value-based care and virtual care; what is helping to lessen clinician burnout; surprising views among medical students on the use of tech in healthcare; what is at the root of the public's mistrust of science, and much more. “The reality of healthcare is very complicated. What I would make a plea for is that we all try to engage in developing a greater understanding of the issues, as opposed to seeing them through a narrow lens.”Mentioned in this episode: https://www.apg.org/https://www.researchamerica.org/
In this episode, Catherine Knipstein, the Vice-President of Strategy of Athena Communications, tells us why words matter to her. She shares a story of when she realized she was going to translate this expertise into a career. She emphasizes simplicity when crafting your messages when you can.Catherine talks about her mantra, "Write tight." She also shares her thoughts on the term “fake news” and how it is becoming difficult for us to filter out what is true or not with all of the information available. Listen to this episode to find out why you should always be careful with your words, why it is important to be honest in your messaging, to be open-minded, and to seek out alternative viewpoints, as well as why it is crucial to assume the best intentions of others and have grace with them.Episode Highlights:08:20 - Write tight. Be very simple. When you can use a one-syllable word, do so. Your sentences should be very short and concise. And that way, everyone understands what you're saying. It's a lot harder to do that.11:30 - We're under attack by words. It's factual that there are bad actors, foreign and domestic, that are using words to try to mislead us, to lie to us, to influence our elections, for example. It's a little scary quite frankly.17:02 - It's that simple, short messaging. It's being honest. I mean, you and I have done media training together, messaging training together. And that's always our number one rule. Now this is a combination of two words we all know too well, “information” and “pandemic”. I'm sure you've heard of the expression going viral. But with more and more Information going viral overnight, what we can encounter is an infodemic. By definition, an infodemic is a rapid and far-reaching spread of both accurate and inaccurate Information about something, such as a disease. As facts, rumors, and fears mix and disperse, it becomes difficult to learn essential information about an issue. Now since we're still not out of the current pandemic, you might think the word infodemic has come out of the covid years, but actually this word isn't new, it was coined in 2003, the year of SARS. And it was coined by journalist and political scientist David Rothkopf in a Washington Post column. Back then he said, SARS is the story of not one epidemic but two, and the second epidemic, the one that has largely escaped the headlines, has implications that are far greater than the disease itself. That is because it is not the viral epidemic but rather an "information epidemic" or infodemic that has transformed SARS into a global economic and social debacle.

When FBI agents raided the home of President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago, they allegedly requested that security cameras be shut off. Yet, the cameras may have still been rolling over the course of the close to 10-hour raid. Eric Trump is now announcing his plans to release the video publicly. Meanwhile, the World Economic Forum (WEF) has issued a new call for global censorship. This continues a trend started by the World Health Organization at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic: the so-called “Infodemic” battle to reduce the amount of public information and to control news coverage on key topics. Two years after the worldwide outbreak of Covid-19, what will the long-term effects be? Not just in terms of public health, but in terms of privacy, censorship, and government control? This week, we are joined by journalists Joel Simon and Robert Mahoney, co-authors of The Infodemic: How Censorship and Lies Made the World Sicker and Less Free. The authors explain how, “as COVID-19 spread around the world, so did government censorship. The Infodemic lays bare not just old-fashioned censorship, but also the mechanisms of a modern brand of ‘censorship through noise,' which moves beyond traditional means of state control—such as the jailing of critics and restricting the flow of information—to open the floodgates of misinformation, overwhelming the public with lies and half-truths.” Joel and Robert talk about how the Covid crisis has exacerbated a mistrust in institutions, a deterioration of local news outlets, and a deep sense of cynicism that is born of lack of information. Don't miss this fascinating conversation about something that affects all of us in one way or another. Find Joel Simon on Instagram and Twitter. Find Robert Mahoney on Twitter. As COVID-19 began to spread around the world in 2020, so did a steady stream of information — and disinformation. Running parallel to the pandemic was an “infodemic,” a digital and physical deluge of information that resulted in mass confusion and censorship. In their new book, The Infodemic, authors Joel Simon and Robert Mahoney lay bare the mechanisms of a modern brand of “censorship through noise” that moves beyond traditional means of state control (jailing critics and restricting the flow of information, for example) to open the floodgates of misinformation. The result? A public overwhelmed with lies and half-truths. Simon and Mahoney have traveled the world for many years defending press freedom and journalists' rights as the directors of the Committee to Protect Journalists. They've charted COVID censorship beginning in China, through Iran, Russia, India, Egypt, Brazil, and inside the Trump White House. They argue that increased surveillance in the name of public health, the collapse of public trust in institutions, and the demise of local news reporting all contributed to help governments hijack the flow of information and usurp power. Through vivid characters and behind-the-scenes accounts, Simon and Mahoney argue that under the cover of a global pandemic, governments have undermined freedom and taken control — and that this new political order may be the legacy of the disease. Truth may seem like a simple concept, but Simon and Mahoney highlight how complex it really is. What do you consider a fact? How do you know what a fact is? In this installment of Town Hall's In the Moment podcast, radio host Katy Sewall interviews Simon and Mahoney about these questions in the context of today's pandemic and political powers. Joel Simon is a fellow at the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia Journalism School and formerly the Executive Director of the Committee to Protect Journalists. Before joining CPJ, he worked as a journalist in Latin America and California. He is the author of three books, including We Want to Negotiate: The Secret World of Hostages, Kidnapping, and Ransom, also from Columbia Global Reports. He lives in Brooklyn, New York. Robert Mahoney is Executive Director of the Committee to Protect Journalists. He was a Reuters correspondent with postings in Southeast Asia, West Africa, India, Israel, France and Germany. As COVID-19 spread around the world, so did government censorship. The Infodemic lays bare not just the use of old-fashioned censorship, but also how “censorship through noise” enhances the traditional means of state control (such as jailing critics and restricting the flow of information) by using a flood of misinformation to overwhelm the public with lies and half-truths. Joel Simon and Robert Mahoney, who have been defending press freedom and journalists' rights worldwide for many years as the directors of the Committee to Protect Journalists, chart the onslaught of COVID censorship—beginning in China, but spreading through Iran, Russia, India, Egypt, Brazil, and even the White House. Increased surveillance in the name of public health, the collapse of public trust in institutions, and the demise of local news reporting all contributed to make it easier for governments to hijack the flow of information. Using vivid characters and behind-the-scenes accounts, Simon and Mahoney show how, under the cover of a global pandemic, governments have undermined freedom and taken ever more authoritarian control—a new political order that may be one of the legacies of this disease. It seems that fakes are everywhere – very few domains of social life are exempt from concerns about fakes and a general ‘crisis of authenticity'. While fakes are often considered worthless, this talk argues that fakes can signal blind spots in our understanding of health-related matters. This lecture draws on examples from the art world and discussion of fakes in films and what these can tell us about fakes in domains of health and medicine.A lecture by Dr Patricia KingoriThe transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website:https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/fakesGresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. In this episode, we chat with Shahmir Ali (PhD in Public Health and Social and Behavioral Sciences at NYU GPH) & Stella Chong (Program Associate, Department of Population Health, NYU Grossman) about their publication: Social Media Use and Misinformation Among Asian Americans During COVID-19. In an effort to understand social media's unique impact on this underserved, underrepresented, and often invisible community of Asian Americans, Shahmir and Stella published a study examining recent research, news, and reports on COVID-19 among Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, and South Asian Americans. The paper calls attention to the unique, complex misinformation found on some social media -- and it documents a growing public health problem in need of tailored policies and interventions. Infodemic is a blend of "information" and "epidemic" that typically refers to a rapid and far-reaching spread of both accurate and inaccurate information about something, such as a disease. As facts, rumors, and fears mix and disperse, it becomes difficult to learn essential information about an issue. - Merriam-Webster This will be a podcast where I vent my frustration in my attempts to help horse owners help their horses thrive in a human world. All I try to do is get the information out that is as unbiased as I can possible make it. But in the past week I have had several troubling stories come to me from people who have been told about the dangers of inflammation and yet each have a tragic or difficult outcome from ignoring it. Worse, they are like most horse owners who are turning to the “experts” that are either not well informed on the root causes of gut inflammation or have an agenda to offer conflicting information. Both of these are not helping the horses they are serving. These sources include my colleague veterinarians and the large producers of horse grains. We cannot afford to just believe what we hear from experts including me. We all need to ask better questions and demand alternative and thoughtful answers. When we discover conflicting answers we need to ask who is correct and then search for the answers. Or, it might be easier to just ask this question - “How is what you are doing working for you?” Or this question, “If I keep doing what I'm doing will my horse become healthier?”
This week's episode is a bit different. Please enjoy a talk from Timothy Caulfield that originally aired on Skeptical Inquirer Presents. SIP is a live online series of talks from some of the brightest minds in the reality based community and is just one of the many great shows that the Center for Inquiry produces. This recent episode of the series featured Timothy Caulfield where he was presented with the Robert P. Balles Annual Prize in Critical Thinking. Afterwards, Caulfield gave an informative talk on the state of the infodemic of misinformation, what we've learned, and ways to deal with the problem. It was something we thought fans of Point of Inquiry would enjoy! The spread of misinformation seems to intensify with each passing week. From social media to cable news to popular podcasts, science-free bunk is everywhere. The ongoing “infodemic” is doing tangible harm to public health, public discourse, and public trust. So...what can we do about it? Timothy Caulfield is the bestselling author of Is Gwyneth Paltrow Wrong about Everything? and host of the acclaimed Netflix documentary series A User's Guide to Cheating Death.
This was the closing panel at our Sustainable Beauty E-Summit last week, in conversation with Dr. Rene Van Acker, Dean of the Ontario Agricultural College, Dr Akemi Ooka, Head of Global Supply Chain Resources at the IBA, and Dr Iain Davies, Director of the Environmental Sciences Program at the PCPC. How does misinformation about sustainability impact sustainable development in the cosmetics sector? Hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did! Interested in supporting the podcast?
