The Porsche 911 celebrates its 60th birthday on 9/12/2023--it was introduced to the world at the Frankfurt Auto Show on 9/12/1963. We discuss what makes this very special car special to us. Ford dealers seem to have new Bronco inventory. Will they finally outsell the Jeep Wrangler? BMW is ditching their subscription heated seats because customers believed they were paying twice for the feature, which was, umm, actually the case. We chastise them. BMW turns 100 in 2023, and, coincidentally, we spot a 1972 BMW 2002. The guys talk about the "Neue Klasse" of BMWs from the 1960s (and today), the fact that the 2002 was the most loved of those "Neue Klasse" cars, and how much we appreciate David E Davis' famous 1968 review in Car and Driver, which included the famous line, "turn your hymnals to page 2002". Trauma surgeon Stephan Moran worries about how the combination of heavier new BEVs, more trucks, and lots of older (lighter) cars still on our roads may result in more traffic injuries and deaths. Finally, Adams brings his prodigious collector car experience to bear as he talks about the realities of actually buying and owning cool older cars: it seems awesome, and mostly is, but sometimes the car you buy disappoints you, and sometimes buying a "sweet ride from my past" is a big mistake. We discuss..... #carsoncallpodcast #bmw2002 #911turns60 #bmwturns100 #porsche911 #traumasurgeonsafetylessons #collectorcarreality

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 25th August. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. 2022 LUCID AIR DREAM EDITION R EXCLUSIVE FIRST DRIVE - “The 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition R is a 933-hp electric luxury sedan that can drive more than 500 miles on a single charge. I witnessed and experienced the latter firsthand. The former? Not so much, but you'll need to keep reading. There's also an Air Dream Edition P (P stands for Performance, R means Range) that makes 1,111 horsepower and offers a range of better than 450 miles. Now get this—they cost the same price. You choose: Do you want a sleek-looking EV with nearly 100 hp more than the Tesla Model S Plaid? Or do you want the car that makes more horsepower than any Lamborghini ever made, beats the Tesla Model S Long Range at its own game by more than 100 miles, and puts the very notion of range anxiety out to pasture?” - Jonny Lieberman- Author - My 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition R had the potential to go 475 miles, whereas Rawlinson's could have traveled 517 miles on a single charge. That's a gauntlet dropped at the feet of you know who. Also, remember range anxiety? As with the internal combustion engine, it's a thing of the past. Original Source : https://www.motortrend.com/reviews/2022-lucid-air-dream-edition-r-exclusive-first-drive-review LUCID AIR DREAM EDITION: 500-MILE RATING LIKELY FOR RANGE VERSION - In Dream Edition Performance form, the Lucid Air will be able to accelerate to 60 mph in less than 2.5 seconds and make 1,111 horsepower, while the Range version does it in 2.7 seconds and makes 933 hp. Total torque for both versions is more than 738 pound-feet, and both versions will reach 168 mph—although we should note that prototypes have gone much faster. - Performance versions ride on staggered-width, specially developed Pirelli P Zero 21-inch tires, while the 500+ mile Range version rides on a 19-inch version of the same tires - It's built on a 924-volt architecture, with a 113-kwh battery pack, and will be able to regain up to 20 miles per minute at 350-kw CCS DC fast chargers (utilizing peak charge rates of over 300 kw), with unlimited Electrify America charging included for three years. - It will be also be compatible with a bi-directional home charging station to enable car-to-grid functionality, and a 19.2-kw onboard charger can regain up to 80 miles per hour on 240V AC—at 80 amps, on a 100-amp circuit, with a special Connected Home Charging system to be installed by Qmerit. The trade fair, previously known internationally as the "Frankfurt Auto Show," is also coming to Munich for the first time. - We have newly included the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV, and it is now officially certain that the EQE will be shown. We have also added the VW ID.5 GTX and (on a speculative basis) the Polestar 3. · Highlighted Source : https://share.getliner.com/bBx7O/ · Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/528864/munich-iaa-electric-car-debuts/ - Audi's highlight will probably be the Grand Sphere, as the brand has already officially confirmed. - The BMW i4 electric sedan is one of the confirmed exhibits at the IAA. One of the highlights of the four-door model based on the new 4 Series Gran Coupé is the astonishing range of up to 590 kilometers according to the WLTP standard. - The Dacia Spring Electric is described by Dacia as the cheapest electric car on the market, and with a base price of around 20,000 euros - Mercedes has confirmed that the new EQE will also be shown - The Swiss company Micro is represented at the IAA, and rumor has it that it is showing the production version of the Microlino 2.0 at the show. - VW has announced the ID.5 GTX for the Munich show, again only with the red and yellow camouflage film. · Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/528864/munich-iaa-electric-car-debuts/6068864/ Jolly good! It's safe to say that we're still in the early years of EV station building, so most of the new stations really are aimed at suburban sprawl, urban centers, or linking up the two coasts—often producing no-go zones for electric cars if their owners want to visit a national park. - Electrify America has worked with Yosemite Westgate and Buck Meadows Lodge to build an EV charging station in Buck Meadows, California, with the goal of giving those driving to Yosemite National Park a spot to charge their EVs. The Yosemite Westgate and Buck Meadows Lodge station is located just 12 miles from this popular national park, and is not that far from other EA stations in Bishop, Oakhurst, and Bridgeport. After offering subsidies to the tune of 100 billion yen ($911 million) in fiscal 2012 to build charging stations and spur electric-vehicle adoption, charging poles mushroomed. - Now, with EV penetration only at around 1%, the country has hundreds of aging charging poles that aren't being used while others (they have an average lifespan of about eight years) are being taken out of service altogether. They can be booked for as little as £5.90 per hour. - Murray McAdam, Enterprise business rental sales manager for Scotland. “Local residents, business travelers, and tourists alike can now quickly switch to a rental vehicle after taking a train, ferry, bus, or plane, making their onward journey much more straightforward, especially to places that can only be accessed by car. The solution, which the company says it will make available as an open-source license, includes hardware and software enhancements that create a “booster” function. - StoreDot claims this will allow the battery to analyze charging station performance in real-time and adjust the battery to accommodate higher currents if so provided by the charge column. This, of course, requires communication between a vehicle's battery and charging system, thus making the open-source license a must for the start-up. Show #578   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 12th September 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   WORLD PREMIER: BYTON INTRODUCES THE PRODUCTION M-BYTE "It looks like an SUV, but if you ask the folks say Byton, they'll tell you it's the worlds first SIV, or "Smart Intuitive Vehicle". Whatever you call it, today, at the Frankfurt Auto Show, Byton formally introduced the production version of their first vehicle, the M-Byte. " says Tom at InsideEVs "The M-Byte will launch in early 2021, and initially be limited to the Chinese market. However, sometime in the first half of 2021, Byton plans to begin exporting the M-Byte to the US, and European markets. They plan to be a global brand, and understand that they only get one shot at the launch, and are willing to wait a couple more months to make sure the M-Byte is absolutely ready for customer deliveries. The M-Byte will be offered in rear-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive configurations. It will also have two battery options. The standard battery is 72 kWh (usable), which Byton claims will offer a driving range of 250 miles. There's also an optional 95 kWh battery (also usable capacity) which Byton claims gives the M-Byte a 323 mile driving range."   Meanhwhile Auto Express confirms: "The new all-electric Byton M-Byte SUV will be sold in right-hand drive in the UK.  Its standout feature is a spectacular 48-inch curved OLED 4k display which runs right across the width of the dashboard - and is controlled via two additional screens, one of them mounted on a fixed steering wheel hub. Byton’s Chief Technical Officer, David Twohig, said the company is targeting comfort and refinement instead of chasing after performance EVs. The car will feature conventional steel springs and dampers, and it will not be offered with air suspension. The M-Byte will cost from around €45,000 in Europe, but no specs or prices have been revealed for UK editions."   https://insideevs.com/news/369530/byton-introduces-production-m-byte-electric-suv/   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/byton/102189/new-2020-byton-m-byte-electric-car-confirmed-for-uk   COX AUTOMOTIVE INVESTS INTO RIVIAN: JOINS FORD, AMAZON, OTHERS "Cox Automotive controls prestigious brands like Kelley Blue Book, Autotrader, and Manheim, but it will also be part of another one: Rivian." says RivianChat.com: "The company says it is due to a “unique approach to building an electrified future” and a “commitment to environmental change.” But the real reason is probably only one: Rivian seems to be a pretty good investment. Amazon and Ford realized that and put more money in the company: $700 million and $500 million, respectively. The intriguing aspect is that Cox Automotive has always taken care of the automotive chain after the car production is complete. In other words, it deals with selling, servicing and evaluating vehicles. This is probably their first move into production, even if not in a direct fashion."   https://rivianchat.com/forum/news/632   VOLVO POLESTAR EXEC SAYS TESLA IS WAY AHEAD IN TERMS OF EFFICIENCY "While Tesla is far from perfect in many ways, we appreciate when a company like Volvo realizes the Silicon Valley automaker's strengths, is willing to outwardly admit them, and then make plans to follow suit." reports InsideEVs: "director of development at Polestar UK Ian Collins mentioned Tesla at a conference in Norway. This is surely not the first time that Volvo / Polestar has brought Tesla to light or even touted the Silicon Valley automaker. Remember, following Polestar 1, the company specifically talked to a Tesla Model 3 rival in the Polestar 2."   Ian Collins: "Tesla has been active in developing its own technology, especially with regard to energy efficiency. There they are far ahead of everyone else. It’s an area that we have to continue to work harder to take back Tesla. We have respect for them as a competitor. We will compete for design, what we offer to customers and technological advances. With technological advances, we not only think about the driveline, but also other parts of the car. I could have pointed out some weaknesses at Tesla that we address in our product. But I won’t."   https://insideevs.com/news/370214/volvo-polestar-exec-tesla-is-leading/   HYUNDAI MOTORSPORT REVEALS THE VELOSTER N ETCR Hyundai Motorsport has today revealed the Veloster N ETCR, its first-ever electric race car, at the International Motor Show (IAA). Based on the road-going Veloster N model, the new car is designed specifically for the new ETCR championship, which will make its debut in 2020. The Veloster N ETCR heralds an exciting new era for Hyundai Motorsport, which will see electric racing become one of the pillars of the company. Designed and built at the company’s Alzenau headquarters, the Veloster N ETCR is fully electric, rear-wheel-drive with a mid-mounted motor.   https://www.hyundai.news/eu/brand/hyundai-motorsport-reveals-the-veloster-n-etcr-at-iaa-2019   ELECTRIFY AMERICA CHARGES PORSCHE TAYCAN "Just last week, Electrify America and Porsche made history together. During the official launch of the Porsche Taycan on September 4, 2019, Electrify America (EA) got to show off the incredible capability of its DC fast-charging network." according to InsideEVs: "The Taycan made a 250-mile journey to Niagara Falls, during which it hooked up to EA's network at its Bloomsburg, PA station and charged at an impressive 270 kW. This is the quickest fast-charging speed to date when it comes to passenger EVs. According to the press release, the Taycan charged from 5 percent to 80 percent. It did so in just 22.5 minutes. The release explains that Electrify America and Porsche North America had this planned ahead of time and did prior testing to assure that the results were possible. With such charging speeds becoming a reality, yet another roadblock to EV adoption will soon become a thing of the past."   https://insideevs.com/news/370185/electrify-america-taycan-first-800v-270kw-ev-charging/amp/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week. LEAVING ARGENTINA. DECLINE OF LI PRICES IS JUST BEGINNING. Deja Vu, Hey Joe?! Lithium equities have fallen precipitously since late February 2018 as the above and similar headlines entered the public domain from a global team of research analysts at Morgan Stanley which has amongst the most extensive breadth of coverage across the EV supply chain - from mining/chemical to cathode to battery to Autos. Is the bear lithium price thesis underpinning their call correct? Or have they been “right for the wrong reasons” so far? Helplessly Hoping as back to school September begins Rodney Hooper and Howard Klein continue their Season 2, Episode 2 interview with Morgan Stanley’s Javier Martinez de Olcoz Cerdan who covers (Somebody to Love) SQM, one of the largest, lowest cost lithium suppliers and has articulated aggressive supply expansion from their world class Salar da Atacama project. Howard connected with Javier in March 2016 following SQM's 50% equity stake in Lithium America’s Cauchari-Olaroz in Argentina, an investment he looked at skeptically at the time as a ploy as SQM re-negotiated its Atacama concession with CORFO. Anyone invested in lithium shares interested in preserving their capital should have listened to Javier and the Morgan Stanley team, if not in February 2018 when they made their initial call, then perhaps in August that year, when their call on SQM exiting Argentina proved correct. It’s Tuesday 12th June 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK.  Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to.   JAGUAR LAND ROVER MAKES ROOM FOR ELECTRIC RE-TOOLING "Britain’s biggest car manufacturer, Jaguar Land Rover, is to transfer all production of its Land Rover Discovery model from the West Midlands to a plant in Slovakia, potentially putting hundreds of agency jobs at risk." reports The UK's Guardian. However the move is seen as an opportunity to re-tool the plant to build the next wave of electric cars. "The company has said it would make an electric option for each of its new models after 2020 David Bailey, the professor of industrial strategy at Aston University, said: “There has been speculation locally that they needed to free up space to make electric vehicles. There was concern that their first electric car, the I-Pace, was being made in Austria – people wanted that built here. If this move on the Discovery means producing electric cars here, overall that is a good thing. We want to see that transition to a low-carbon economy in the Midlands and we want to see the jobs here.”   GERMANY DISCOVERS MORE 'SWITCH OFF' DEVICES IN MERCEDES Daimler shares fell following a report that up to 1 million Daimler cars could contain their own form of what is commonly called a 'defeat devices', as Chief Executive Dieter Zetsche prepared to meet the transport minister on Monday. "Daimler declined to comment on the 1 million vehicles figure, but said it is cooperating fully and transparently with the KBA and Germany's Transport Ministry." reports Autoblog: "Daimler, like other car manufacturers, uses urea nitrate liquids to neutralize nitrogen oxide emissions in exhaust fumes. However, Germany's road vehicle authority, the KBA, has taken issue with the emission control features amid suspicion they allow vehicles to emit excess pollution without detection."   MORE ON TESLA AUTOPILOT AND AI Following up on the story we talked about on yesterday show about improved Autopilot for Tesla: "With V9, we will begin to enable full self-driving features" A reminder than version 8.0 arrived in 2016 so this update is long-awaited. @anandrajk - "Speaking of merging and autopilot the biggest issue i have noticed is when two lanes merge and it is rush hour traffic. The autopilot is not able to decide to let the car slightly ahead on the neighboring lane go ahead and I invariably find myself cornered!" @elonmusk - "That issue is better in latest Autopilot software rolling out now & fully fixed in August update as part of our long-awaited Tesla Version 9. To date, Autopilot resources have rightly focused entirely on safety. With V9, we will begin to enable full self-driving features." Meanwhile, in a related story picked up by Fred Lambert, Electrek reports: "Andrej Karpathy, Tesla’s director of AI and computer vision, is currently hard at work trying to improve Autopilot by training Tesla’s neural net with incredible amounts of data from Tesla’s fleet. He describes how labeling different types of road lines can be quite complex due to the variety of lanes across different regions. He gave another example of Tesla’s dataset with traffic lights, which he says can “get crazy really fast. Karpathy explained that it takes “time and attention” to build a dataset and it is “painful,” which is why they are trying to build new tools at Tesla to help them create “software 2.0” code."   TESLA’S ‘SUPERIOR’ ELECTRONIC ARCHITECTURE ‘OVERLOOKED’ SAYS BERENBERG "Analysts at investment bank Berenberg said people tended to dwell on the competitive landscape for electric car maker Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA), but underestimated the “full extent of Tesla’s technology advantage." say the team at Proactiveinvestors “Imminent competition from traditional Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) is often cited as a key threat to Tesla, but this underestimates the full extent of Tesla’s technology advantage, which manifests in the entire electronic architecture design,” wrote analysts at Berenberg in a research note to clients issued Friday. “This is a decisive barrier for legacy carmakers. Tesla’s centralised, integrated, technology-driven architecture enables flexibility and OTA (over-the-air) software-upgradeability across the entire domain. In contrast, traditional architectures implement technology additively to the legacy infrastructure, resulting in decentralised electronic control units (ECUs) systems that creates excess complexity and incompatibility,” they added.   CATL SURGES ON DAY ONE "Making its market debut in Shenzhen on Monday, China's largest lithium battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd. saw its shares soar by 44% -- the maximum allowed for newly-listed stocks on their first trading day." according to Nikkei.com: "CATL's shares, which were listed on the tech-focused ChiNext index of the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, reached 36.2 yuan apiece, giving the seven-year-old company a valuation of $78.6 billion yuan ($12.2 billion). This makes it the second largest company by market capitalization on ChiNext, with investors bullish on industries related to electric vehicles thanks to Beijing's campaign against pollution."   MERCEDES BENZ SHOWS OFF EQA PROTOYPE "Mercedes has showed off footage of its prototype EQA, the compact EV that's part of its next-generation of EQ electric cars. It first unveiled the A-Class-sized electric car at the Frankfurt Auto Show last year, but it now apparently has a working prototype." according to Engadget: "Its expected to have a 60 kWh battery pack that will yield a 200 to 250 mile range, and electric drivetrain that will propel it from 0 to 60 mph in around five seconds. A DC quick-charging system will allow you to add 60 miles or so of range in just ten minutes. All three EQ EVs just happen to match up against Tesla models, with the EQA taking on the Model 3, the EQS the Model S, and the EQC matching up against Tesla's Model X. Mercedes hasn't revealed the pricing of any of the vehicles yet, of course, nor when the EQS and EQA would come to market."   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
