The Wall Street Journal recently published a hit piece taking down GM CEO Mary Barra. Among other things the article discussed how Barra overinvested in battery electric vehicle (BEV) and self-driving tech, while underinvesting in proven hybrids and internal combustion vehicles. We say: GM's CEO should have hedged her BEV/self-driving bets rather than going, "all in". Trauma surgeon Stephan's daughter Lauren spotted a 2016 Range Rover Evoque convertible. She and we hate it! WTF? Dr Moran then puts on his trauma surgeon hat and discusses rear seat safety ratings, in this case those for mid-size luxury SUVs. He is gratified that the IHSS is now measuring the safety ratings for rear seat passengers but disappointed that so many "family haulers" have unsafe rear seats. You can't improve something unless you first measure it, so we hope rear seats become safer for kids soon. The guys then get into their favorite childhood car toys. You-build-it plastic model cars are all of our faves, especially Tamiyas, but Hot Wheels and Corgis also earned our love. Finally, all three of us select the $125,000 collector car that we would pick to put in our garages. Spoiler alert: they're all cool! #carsoncallpodcast #steveautos #traumasurgeonsafety #suvconvertible #rangeroverevoque #gmtroubles #timesupforbarra #firebarra #tamiya

Mercedes decides to put BEV charging stations at Buc-ees. Say what? The guys agree that Mercedes and Buc-ees don't belong together. Trauma surgeon Stephan Moran and former CoC guest USAF Lt Gen/F15 pilot (ret) Brett Willams did the two-day Masters Porsche track experience at Barber Park together. They loved it, and Stephan talks about it. Next Stephan gets into the safety lessons that he learned during that experience, including: if you find yourself in a situation where a collision is unavoidable, pull your arms into your chest and make sure your feet are off of the pedals! Finally, the guys discuss which $80,000 collector car they would buy for their garages. #carsoncallpodcast #steveautos #traumasurgeonsafety #porschetrackexperience #bucees #collectorcars #mercedeseqs #mercedescharging #mercedesbucees #personalfinance
A few weeks ago we each picked a $35,000 collector car for our virtual garages. Today we sell that car and spend $50,000 on a dream collector car to replace it. The only caveat, it must seat four. Adams spots a 1999 Plymouth Prowler, Daimler Chrysler's attempt to resurrect the hot rod. The guys agree that it was ugly then, and it's still ugly. In general, the best fix for a bad looking car is more power, but the Prowler's 253HP V6 provided neither a lot of oomph nor an attractive exhaust note. Girls: if your mom did it better and looked better doing it, maybe just stay home on Saturday night....... Our trauma surgeon Stephan Moran discusses some self-driving car problems as well as how he'd address them to make piloting vehicles with "autonomous" technology safer. Then the crew gets into when certain features that we remember--carburetors, front bench seats, cassette players, pop-up headlights, vent windows, and chrome bumpers--died, plus features on current cars that we think will die soon. #carsoncallpodcast #steveautos #automotivefeatures #autonomousdriving #selfdrivingcars #traumasurgeonsafety #plymouthprowler #collectorcars
The Porsche 911 celebrates its 60th birthday on 9/12/2023--it was introduced to the world at the Frankfurt Auto Show on 9/12/1963. We discuss what makes this very special car special to us. Ford dealers seem to have new Bronco inventory. Will they finally outsell the Jeep Wrangler? BMW is ditching their subscription heated seats because customers believed they were paying twice for the feature, which was, umm, actually the case. We chastise them. BMW turns 100 in 2023, and, coincidentally, we spot a 1972 BMW 2002. The guys talk about the "Neue Klasse" of BMWs from the 1960s (and today), the fact that the 2002 was the most loved of those "Neue Klasse" cars, and how much we appreciate David E Davis' famous 1968 review in Car and Driver, which included the famous line, "turn your hymnals to page 2002". Trauma surgeon Stephan Moran worries about how the combination of heavier new BEVs, more trucks, and lots of older (lighter) cars still on our roads may result in more traffic injuries and deaths. Finally, Adams brings his prodigious collector car experience to bear as he talks about the realities of actually buying and owning cool older cars: it seems awesome, and mostly is, but sometimes the car you buy disappoints you, and sometimes buying a "sweet ride from my past" is a big mistake. We discuss..... #carsoncallpodcast #bmw2002 #911turns60 #bmwturns100 #porsche911 #traumasurgeonsafetylessons #collectorcarreality
It is September and football is back!!! It is also time for another riveting Ask Rick segment were I ask him the tough questions that not everyone wants to hear. As always Rick delivers sage advice and wisdom founded in years of buying and selling classic vehicles. When it comes to cars as investment, possibly a with a great ROI, Rick has strong opinions and advice here. Can it be done? Short answer; yes! Should it be done? Long answer......maybe. As with all things, it depends what you understand and where you can make your gain on the purchase of the car initially. For Rick and his dad, their collection has immense value today of course, but every car in inventory was chosen for it's specialness to the Schmidt's not as a hedge on a great investment. They chose high quality low mile original cars and didn't just stick to muscle cars. Their collection has many examples of unique rare American cars that have less than 1000 miles (think Rivieras, Eldorado's, and Lincoln's).. Some have interiors with the delivery plastic still in place! Others are beautifully restored treasures. Today, it's paid off. Technically, it could payoff if they ever chose to sell....which they almost never do! The post TMCP #552: Ask Rick – Is it Wise (or Possible) to Have Collector Cars as Your Retirement Investment? first appeared on The Muscle Car Place.

This On The Move gets right to rolling, with hosts Matt Avery and John Kraman discussing the nuts and bolts of selecting the right wheels and tires for classic and collector cars throughout the show. But, before they can, they take a look ahead at the upcoming Kissimmee Summer Special, slated for August 27-29. Both share the lots that caught their eye, with Matt drawn to a 1969 Dodge Daytona in B5 Blue Fire Metallic, while John can’t help but coo for a 1962 Chevrolet Corvette Resto Mod Convertible. The Corvette conversation continues with a look back at the first C8 to cross the block at a Mecum auction, which happened at the recent Spring Classic event in Indianapolis. The car, finished in Blade Silver, sold for $106,700. Next, with the launch of the latest Mecum Magazine, the guys share what they wrote in the latest edition. Matt penned a feature story on a 1974 Bronco heading to the upcoming Mecum Dallas auction, and, in his column, Free Revs, he spotlighted the 25 Aston Martin DB5 recreation models the brand is building. Each rings up at a cool $3.4 million but sports some James Bond movie touches. John then shares how in his At the Redline, he addresses how important the allure of cars is and the transition to friendships with folks that share the same wheeled interest and passions. The show’s featured guest is Wade Kawasaki, president and CEO of Legendary Companies (formerly known as Coker Group). Matt shares a special conversation he had with Wade at the Spring Classic where he heard about what’s new with Coker Tires and Wheels Vintiques, as well as the importance of selecting the right wheels and tires when bringing a vehicle to auction. Wade also shares some of the highlights in his diverse car collection including a 1961 Volkswagen 21-Window Bus he bought at the 2020 Mecum Glendale auction and a 2016 Jaguar F-TYPE Project 7, purchased at a previous Mecum Denver auction. Next, Matt and John get around to talking about the history of tires, including the pivotal shift from bias-ply construction to radial designs. They also go into detail about their observations and the trends they’ve seen on the auction block including how a proper set of wheels and tires on a collector vehicle usually translates to higher values. Rounding out the conversation, the guys get a call from J.D. Perry, a professional detailer for Gold Eagle and 303 products. J.D. draws on his vast experience to highlight the ins and outs of keeping wheels and tires clean and looking their best.

My 409 No one seemed to capture the culture of cars better than the Beach Boys. When they weren’t singing about California girls in the early ‘60s they were worshiping hot rods and muscle cars. And those cars, like the songs, seem to get better with age. That’s why those 40 to 50 year old classic cars evolved from a weekend hobby for some, to a collector’s heaven for others. In fact the entire market has been exploding of late. Just ask McKeel Hagerty & Ken Lingenfelter. These successful business owners - Hagerty in insurance, Lingenfelter in engineering - have extensive collections that go far beyond just hot rods. Both men join John McElroy this week on Autoline to discuss the rocketing vintage car market.
