In a move that the Daily Mail described as “humiliating” for Joe Biden, lawmakers cast a bipartisan vote to freeze the six billion dollars that the President had previously freed up for Iran as part of his hostage negotiation deal. The move drew the support of nearly every Republican but also attracted nearly 100 Democrats. Now it’s looking as if it might pass in the Senate as well. During a time when it’s been seeming as if common sense had been banned in Washington, we have lawmakers seemingly conceding that sending billions of dollars to the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism might not be such a great idea. President Biden is facing a humiliating foreign policy setback as $6 billion he used to leverage the release of five imprisoned Americans from Iran could be frozen. Lawmakers including members of Biden’s own party voted on Thursday to approve a bill that would permanently freeze the funds, which were unfrozen by the White House in September as part of a controversial deal. The bill, named the No Funds for Iranian Terrorism Act, passed in a 307 to 119 vote – which was approved by almost every Republican and 90 Democrats. The money is being held in Qatar, where most negotiations between the West and terror groups take place these days. The reality is that Joe Biden had already “refrozen” the money after the October 7 Hamas terror attacks. Congress is now close to locking the door to those funds indefinitely. Keep in mind that the money was originally leveraged to free five American hostages as well as five Iranian prisoners. But before the cash transfer was even complete, an even larger number of Americans were taken hostage by Hamas, which is almost entirely funded by Iran. In that sense, the United States was losing ground in the exchange, rather than getting something of value for the money. Plenty of people were warning the Biden administration about this when the talks first began. This is why we’ve long had a rule about not negotiating with terrorists. If you pay to secure the release of hostages, you will inevitably wind up with more hostages because the terrorists see that their tactics are working. And that’s precisely where we are today. https://www.dailyfetched.com/blm-rioters-in-atlanta-who-burnt-down-wendys-get-500-fine/ BLM Rioters in Atlanta Who Burnt Down Wendy’s Get $500 Fine Two Black Lives Matter (BLM) rioters who pleaded guilty to torching Wendy’s fast food restaurant in Atlanta in 2020 were sentenced to five years of probation and a $500 fine. Chisom Kingston and Natalie White were charged with conspiracy to commit arson in the first degree, and two counts of first-degree arson. Both pleaded guilty in a plea deal, according to court records. Kingston and White must complete 150 hours of community service. In addition to charges, John Wesley Wade, 35, was indicted for the same fire in January this year. Initially, all three pleaded not guilty and waived their arraignments in March 2022, The charges stem from BLM riots, which took place over the death of Rayshard Brooks, who was killed in a police-involved shooting in June 2020. Brooks allegedly punched police officer David Brosnan and stole his taser while under investigation for a DUI in the parking lot of the Wendy’s restaurant. Brooks reportedly aimed the Taser at Officer Brosnan. However, a second officer, Garrett Rolfe, shot and killed rooks during the altercation. Brooks allegedly punched Brosnan, causing a concussion. In response to the incident, BLM rioters burnt down Wendy’s in protest of Brooks’ death. Later, violent demonstrations exploded over the city in the months following. Former Fulton County District Attorney charged officers Rolfe and Brosnan. Brosnan was charged with aggravated assault, while Rolfe faces felony murder and assault charges. Ninety-nine percent of charges brought against BLM rioters in 2020 were dropped by local prosecutors, according to an analysis from The Guardian. Earlier this year, the United States Court of Appeals in Washington, DC, admitted that BLM rioters were treated better compared to some pro-life protesters. The news comes just under a month after New York City officials agreed to pay $13 million to violent “2020 Summer of Love” BLM and Antifa protesters after they caused damage to 45 businesses. https://www.foxnews.com/us/derek-chauvin-returns-prison-after-alleged-blm-inspired-stabbing Derek Chauvin returns to prison after alleged BLM-inspired stabbing Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has returned to a federal prison in Arizona more than a week after a fellow inmate allegedly stabbed him 22 times with a shank in the library in a Black Friday attack partially inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement. Chauvin is serving more than 20 years for the death of George Floyd and for depriving him of his civil rights in a May 2020 encounter that kicked off nationwide protests. Chauvin's family is "very concerned about the facility’s capacity to protect Derek from further harm," his lawyer, Greg Erickson, told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "They remain unassured that any changes have been made to the faulty procedures that allowed Derek’s attack to occur in the first place." John Turscak, 52, allegedly told federal correction officers that he targeted Chauvin because he was a high-profile inmate, that he plotted the attack for a month and that he would have killed him if guards had not intervened, according to court documents. Turscak could see 60 years added to his federal sentence if he gets the maximum punishment on the four new charges he faces, which includes attempted murder. He was due for release in 2026, according to the Bureau of Prisons. Turscak, a former gang member and snitch, was dropped as an FBI informant for dealing drugs, greenlighting assaults and extorting money, according to prosecutors. He allegedly told investigators that he picked Black Friday for the attack to symbolize both BLM and the "Black Hand" of the Mexican Mafia prison gang. The attack took place from behind in the law library inside Federal Correctional Institution Tucson on Nov. 24. Authorities said guards intervened "immediately," but Erickson questioned how fast the response really was – noting Chauvin's 22 stab wounds. "Why was Derek allowed into the law library without a guard in close enough proximity to stop a possible attack?" he asked. "His family continues to wonder." Prison experts have warned that Chauvin, like other high-profile inmates, is at increased risk. "He was a dead man walking his first day in prison," said Keith Rovere, a former prison minister and the host of the "Lighter Side of Serial Killers" podcast. "This definitely won't be the last attack." In an appeal filed last month, Chauvin claimed new evidence shows he was not responsible for the death. Separately, the Supreme Court rejected his appeal for a new trial just days before the stabbing. Chauvin was one of four officers who arrested Floyd that day after he allegedly passed a counterfeit $20 bill at a coffee shop and refused to cooperate with police. Chauvin, who was seen on a video that prompted riots around the country, knelt on Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes leading up to his death. Erickson previously slammed the prison for "poor procedures and lack of institutional control" – referencing an incident last year in which an inmate allegedly smuggled a firearm into the facility and tried to shoot someone. Prison officials said they "[take] seriously our duty to protect the individuals entrusted in our custody, as well as maintain the safety of correctional employees and the community." Citing privacy and safety concerns, authorities said they do not discuss the medical status or other "conditions of confinement" for inmates. https://www.worldofreel.com/blog/2023/12/1/hb03oy7zedb5m0rhj557tbnr6znepm Raves for ‘Godzilla Minus One’ Who’s seen Toho’s “Godzilla Minus One”? Ship the Mary Celeste is discovered mysteriously abandoned by her crew in the Atlantic Ocean on December 5th, 1872? On November 7, 1872, the Mary Celeste set sail from New York City, with more than 1,700 barrels of alcohol destined for Genoa, Italy. On board were 10 people, including Captain Briggs, his wife, and their two-year-old daughter. Over the next two weeks, the ship encountered harsh weather. According to the last log entry—dated November 25—the Mary Celeste was some 6 nautical miles (11 km) from the Azores. Ten days later, December 5th, the vessel was spotted by the British brig Dei Gratia. Crew from that ship boarded the Mary Celeste and discovered it deserted. Although there was more than 3 feet (1 metre) of water in the hold—an amount that would not have caused panic—the vessel was seaworthy. Adding to the mystery was the fact that the cargo and personal belongings were largely undisturbed, although a longboat was missing. It appeared that the ship had been abandoned quickly. Crewmen from the Dei Gratia sailed the Mary Celeste to Gibraltar, some 800 miles (1,482 km) away. There British authorities conducted an investigation, which ultimately found no evidence of foul play. How about some famous birthdays for December 5th? Martin Van Buren was born on December 5th - 1782 George Armstrong Custer - 1839 Walt Disney - 1901 Little Richard - 1932

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms shocked many people around the metro Atlanta area by announcing last week she will not be running for reelection. She has said that this is coming from a place of strength and not weakness. But her critics have said that what she calls a “COVID Crime Wave” and her handling of the firing of Atlanta police officer Garrett Rolfe, who shot Rayshard Brooks last summer, has made her vulnerable if she had chosen to run. Police officers in the city of Atlanta feel like Bottoms no longer have their backs. This week on Georgia Today, we look at some issues Bottoms faced during her tenure as mayor of the city of Atlanta with CNN national correspondent Ryan Young.
Thursday on Political Rewind: The Atlanta Police Department officer charged with felony murder in the death of Rayshard Brooks was reinstated to duty by the city's Civil Service Board yesterday. The board ruled Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms denied officer Garrett Rolfe due process when she fired him within 24 hours of the shooting. How does this twist complicate the ongoing quest for justice in the case? In other news, Republicans launched new criticism of Georgia businesses critical of Georgia's new election law. In visits to Atlanta this week, U.S. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Sen. Lindsey Graham waded into the messaging war. State and national GOP officials have been critical of companies like Coca-Cola and Delta Air Lines after corporate leaders issued stern rebukes of the state's new election laws. A new poll from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution shows that a majority of Georgians agree business should stay out of politics. Panelists: Dr. Andra Gillespie — Professor of Political Science and Director of the James Weldon Johnson Institute for the Study of Race and Difference at Emory University Kevin Riley — Editor, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
DeMicha Luster, NPU-V community leader, joins “Closer Look’ to discuss the Atlanta Civil Service Board’s ruling to reinstate Garrett Rolfe, the former Atlanta police officer who shot and killed Rayshard Brooks last summer. Plus, Gayle Hunter Holloman, the executive director for the Fulton County Library System, discusses the re-opening of Fulton County libraries. Lastly, educators Chris Wyczalkowski, Deidre Oakley discuss Georgia State University’s Urban Studies Institute creation of micro-mobility lab to study micro-scale transportation.
The Atlanta Civil Service Board ruled that Garrett Rolfe, the former Atlanta police officer who shot and killed Rayshard Brooks last summer, was wrongfully terminated. Criminal Defense Attorney and WABE Legal Analyst Page Pate joins “Closer Look” to discuss the board’s decision to reverse Rolfe’s termination. Smyrna Mayor Derek Norton talks with show host Rose Scott about why he lifted mask restrictions and the city’s ongoing response to combat COVID-19. Plus, State Representative Bee Nguyen, who represents District 89, shares why she’s jumping in the race to be Georgia’s next secretary of state. Lastly, Rose talks with Clayton State University student André Lagoueyte to kick off this year's “Road To Graduation” series.
Welcome back to the Politics of Prosecution Podcast! Welcome to the Politics of Prosecution Podcast. This podcast examines the interaction between politics, broadly defined, and criminal prosecution on the local, state and federal levels. Our goal is to produce a variety of shows using different media. Our first series of eight episodes is produced by students in High Point University's Honors Program. They will look at a variety of issues raised by ongoing events. This ninth episode looks at the idea of prosecutorial discretion. Prosecutors hold a lot of power with little to no checks on this power. Prosecutors have extreme discretion when determining which cases to take and what charges are appropriate. To examine prosecutorial discretion, we dive into the case involving the shooting of Rayshard Brooks by Atlanta police officer, Garrett Rolfe. Following a timeline of events, we discuss the charges brought against Rolfe by prosecutor Paul Howard. We conclude with a conversation about the potential pressures that are placed on the prosecutor, specifically public opinion and legislative power. Ex-officer Garrett Rolfe charged with Murder Vallow + Daybell Update and Sentencing in Tessa Majors Case
Welcome to Majority.FM's AM QUICKIE! Brought to you by justcoffee.coop TODAY'S HEADLINES: Another killer cop catches a murder charge, this time in Georgia. But human rights advocates say we are a long way from justice for police brutality. Meanwhile, essential delivery workers are having a lot of problems with police during this time of curfews. Millions more people each week face an untenable economic situation. And lastly, why is it so satisfying to see conservatives lose their minds over the police-free zone the lefties set up in Seattle? We bring you the latest from the CHAZ – or the CHOP – whichever, take your pick. THESE ARE THE STORIES YOU NEED TO KNOW: Killer Atlanta Cop Charged The United Nations Human Rights Council held an urgent session in New York yesterday on racism and police brutality. The UN’s chief of human rights, Michelle Bachelet (BATCH-EH-LETT), said during the proceedings that QUOTE Too little has changed over too many years. The scale of today's protests point at the sea change. We need a decisive action around the world ENDQUOTE. It’s far from decisive, but there was one sign of progress in yesterday’s headlines. The fired Atlanta cop who shot and killed Rayshard Brooks, a twenty-seven-year-old restaurant worker, caught felony murder charges yesterday. In addition to the murder charge, Garrett Rolfe will face 10 other offenses for shooting Brooks twice during a suspected drunk driving stop. Prosecutors say they have video showing Rolfe kicked Brooks on the ground after shooting him. The Brooks family’s attorney told reporters QUOTE Was this justice today? Not yet ENDQUOTE. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution yesterday reported on a sudden string of hangings that has killed six black and Hispanic Americans in four states. The people fear lynchings, but police have ruled each case a suicide. Across the country, Oakland, California’s mayor announced a hate crimes investigation after nooses were found hanging from trees on public land. But after the mayor’s announcement, Oakland police put out a statement that the ropes could simply have been part of someone’s exercise routine. So, yeah, we need decisive action around the world to end racism and police brutality. Curfews Punish Gig Workers If anybody’s essential, it’s the person delivering your Phad Thai. Gig workers are increasingly facing arrest for violating curfew, the Washington Post reported yesterday. Many delivery apps like Caviar, Uber and Instacart have kept operating during periods of coronavirus curfew around the country. But they aren’t always letting their drivers know the legal risks they might face – not to mention threats to life and limb from the police. The companies say they have instituted changes to keep workers safer, like distributing face masks, but critics and labor advocates say it’s not enough. What’s more, their workforce has expanded dramatically as a result of the pandemic and economic crisis. Hundreds of thousands people have joined the gig economy labor pool in recent months. And they’re finding out the hard way just how cruel and unjust the lords of Silicon Valley can be. One in thirteen San Francisco renters has broken their lease in the past hundred days. That’s according to the San Francisco Chronicle, which says that people are walking out on their leases rather than fall behind on rent. The top category of renters to bail on their leases were those between eighteen and twenty-five years old. But all kinds of people are suffering all over the place. Reports from Kentucky yesterday showed eight-hour unemployment line. That’s thousands of people standing for hours in the sun, lined up along along a road. And, presumably, getting more angry by the minute. This is what you get with a capitalist economy in free-fall that provides no meaningful safety net. CHAZ Freaks Out Squares The Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone, or CHAZ -- also known as the Capitol Hill Organized Protest, or CHOP – continues to drive Republicans insane. The gentrified Seattle neighborhood has been occupied by protesters who are determined to keep the cops at bay. They’ve held their ground for eleven days now, and reclaimed some public land in the process. This week some members of the CHOP community met with elected officials and bureaucrats from the city of Seattle to agree on new borders. These were described by local alt-weekly The Stranger as slightly smaller, but more permanent. The newspaper reported fruitful conversations between residents and the city over the last few days[. Now] the Seattle Fire Department, Seattle Public Utilities, and the Seattle Department of Transportation are removing the old flimsy barriers at the intersections and installing concrete barriers wrapped with particle board... Honey Buckets are being rearranged. [And] The No Cop Co-Op is moving down the street a bit. The idea is to allow greater access for emergency vehicles, including fire trucks. It seems the only people who are taking the words autonomous zone literally work in conservative media. Far-right websites put out a call for so-called patriots to QUOTE end domestic terrorism ENDQUOTE in the CHOP with an event scheduled for today. Local activists don’t seem too worried, as past incursions by the far right ended in humiliation for the reactionaries. Showing just how obsessed the right is with this anarchist experiment in Seattle, Florida drunk driver and Congressman Matt Gaetz yesterday went on a wild rant about the CHOP. He asked the majority Democrats if they’d host a Congressional delegation to Seattle so they could assess conditions for themselves. Evidently he believes Trump, who claimed Seattle has been taken over by domestic terrorists. Gaetz then got into a heated back-and-forth with Louisiana Congressman Cedric Richmond, who suggested Gaetz might have a conscious racial bias. Gaetz responded by shouting Who in the hell do you think you are?! This is outrageous! But Richmond, who chaired the Congressional Black Caucus until last year, had the final word: If the shoe fits, he said. Matt Gaetz? Racist? Yeah, that shoe fits just fine. Here’s what Gaetz could see happening in the CHOP if he actually cared to look: A young black Stanford graduate with training in degrees in energy and sustainability, who started a vegetable garden in a Capitol Hill park. The urban farmer, Marcus Henderson, told The Stranger his work on the CHOP farm seeks to remedy historic injustices. One way systemic racism in America has worked is by depriving blacks of land. Henderson runs a small organization called Black Star Farmers, which is also the name of his website and his Instagram page. If you’re in the Seattle area, they are seeking donations of organic compost, mulch, river rocks, cinder blocks, worms, and other small-farm necessities. Oh no: anarchy! AND NOW FOR SOME QUICKER QUICKIES: Former Trump national security adviser John Bolton’s book is the talk of the Beltway, especially since the White House is basically trying to ban it. In excerpts widely reported yesterday, Trump is revealed to have asked Chinese leader Xi Jinping for held getting re- elected. The walrus moustache always laughs last. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer endorsed New York Representative Eliot Engel yesterday. Engel, a hawkish centrist, faces progressive favorite Jamaal Bowman in the New York Democratic primary next Tuesday, June 23. Chuck would’ve been smarter to sit this one out. Garrett Rolfe, the former Atlanta police officer who shot Rayshard Brooks, is facing 11 charges, including a felony murder charge. At a news conference, the District Attorney revealed a photo he said shows Rolfe kicking Brooks after he had been shot. Tomika Miller, Brooks’s widow, said she was “appalled” after hearing and seeing the new details. L. Chris Stewart, the Brooks’s family attorney tells Anderson Cooper that Miller had to leave the courtroom because she was so upset. Plus, coronavirus cases are still rising in Tulsa, Oklahoma as President Trump gets ready to hold his first rally since the pandemic shut down most of the country. Dr. Jabraan Pasha wrote a letter signed by local health care workers asking the mayor to postpone the President's rally. He joins AC360 to discuss his concerns for holding such a large event while daily new cases are still surging. Airdate: June 17, 2020

An Atlanta police officer was fired early Sunday following the fatal shooting of a black man, which triggered unrest and new waves of protests in the city. Rayshard Brooks, 27, was fatally shot by police at a Wendy's drive-thru after officials said he resisted arrest and stole an officer's Taser. An autopsy found that Brooks suffered two gunshot wounds to his back and he died of organ injuries and blood loss, the Fulton County Medical Examiner said on Sunday. The manner of death was listed as a homicide. The fired officer, Garrett Rolfe, was hired by the department in October 2013, a department spokesperson said. Devin Brosnan, another officer at the scene, was placed on administrative duty. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rt365/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rt365/support
We are nearly three weeks into sustained worldwide protests over the Minneapolis police killing last month of George Floyd. On Friday night, a white police officer in Atlanta named Garrett Rolfe killed a 27 year old Black man, Rayshard Brooks, as he fled after failing a sobriety test. Brooks had taken a Taser gun from another officer and pointed it, and possibly fired it at Rolfe. The coroner has declared Brooks’ death a homicide. Rolfe has been fired, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating. This latest incident has further intensified calls for reform of police use-of-force policies, and growing demands in cities across the country to “defund the police.” The Baltimore City Council met virtually on Friday night to discuss cuts to the Baltimore Police Department budget. The US Senate and the House are considering federal legislation, and leaders in Annapolis have vowed that police reform will be a high priority in the next General Assembly... Some call for reform within traditional law enforcement structures; others advocate for reallocating funds from police to social services. So far this year in Baltimore, 146 people have been victims of homicide. If police departments are de-funded or abolished altogether, can entities other than police adequately safeguard communities wracked by almost daily violence? Later in this hour Tom talks with Alex Vitale, an associate professor of sociology at Brooklyn College and the director of the Policing and Social Justice Project. Dr. Vitale is also the author of The End of Policing and a proponent of new paradigms for public safety and security. Then, Tom speaks with historian Dr. Terry Anne Scott, an associate professor and specialist in African American history at Hood College. But Tom begins today with DeRay Mckesson, who has concentrated his activism on reducing police violence for years. He’s a co-founder of Campaign Zero, a national movement for police reform that recently launched what it calls the 8 Can’t Wait project, a prescription for police departments designed to curb the use of force against civilians. DeRay Mckesson joins us on the line from New York City.
