Send us a textBuckle up for our raw, unfiltered reaction to Eurovision 2025's second semi-final! We're diving into this year's wildest collection of musical offerings before the performances even hit the stage.Australia opens the night with what might be the most polarizing act of the competition – the infamous "Milkshake Man" who's already generating heated debates across the Eurovision community. From there, we journey through the musical extremes that make this competition so addictively watchable: Montenegro's gothic drama, Ireland's bizarre tribute to a Soviet space dog, and Malta's controversially censored "Serving" that has fans ready to rebel against the EBU's language restrictions. The standout performances of the night promise to be Czechia's sultry, Bond-worthy "Kiss Kiss Goodbye" and Austria's operatic vocal showcase that could either soar or crash depending on the live delivery. Meanwhile, Georgia brings traditional dancing elements that will have jury members reaching for their highest scores, while Finland closes the show with a provocative female empowerment anthem that could divide voters. What makes this semi-final particularly fascinating is the clash between jury bait and public favorites. Will the juries ever embrace the theatrical elements that make Eurovision unique, or will they retreat to safer, more traditional performances? And which countries will ultimately secure their spot in the grand final?Ready to join us for this Eurovision journey? Grab your scorecards, prepare your party snacks, and don't forget to hydrate! The road to Switzerland's 2025 Eurovision is about to get very interesting indeed.Support the show#eurovision

My guest again this week is Christopher S. Connelly, author of the fascinating new book HELEN MORGAN — THE ORIGINAL TORCH SINGER AND ZIEGFELD'S LAST STAR. The topics discussed in this episode include: Morgan's follow up to Show Boat, the 1929 hit musical Sweet Adeline — a star vehicle created especially for her by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II. The 1932 revival of Show Boat and subsequent tour. Morgan's career as a nightclub hostess and entertainer at a series of night spots named for her including Chez Morgan, Helen Morgan's Summer House, and The House of Morgan. The Ziegfeld Follies of 1931. And Helen Morgan as a Gay Icon and the "Pansy Craze" stars who imitated her. Christopher S. Connelly is a film and theater historian. You Might Know Her From: The Look of Love/The Island, 3 From Brooklyn, The Nanny, I'm Going to Be Famous, Ladies of the House, Gimme a Break, and her over 50-year illustrious recording career. Previously, we discussed our iconic pop queens and how their songs typically fit into distinct categories that hit an emotional button that appeals to gay men. These categories often include themes of empowerment, heartbreak, resilience, and self-expression, resonating deeply with the LGBTQ+ community, particularly gay men, who find solace and strength in these anthems. In this episode, we continue our Gay Icons series with Stefan Mreczko joining us to discuss none other than the Queen of Pop herself, Madonna. Les, Jason, and Kurt go off the rails right out of the gate when Les and Kurt are blindsided by the new show open that Jason made. (Working on that “Kurt Fitzpatrick, Gay Icon” merch, stat!). Plus, the guys imagine a world where Blac Chyna dates Fiddler on the Roof Star Topol (obviously). Then, they dig into Hallmark's 2019 movie Winter Castle, a movie that wants us to be happy for people so awful that they've scheduled a an expensive and unnecessarily last-minute destination wedding in a very cold and very remote area. In fact, everyone in this movie is terrible from the guy who's stringing his not-girlfriend along, to the family trying to end this guy's non-relationship, to the lead pursuing this guy, to his not-really-a-girlfriend literally sneezing in someone's face. Really, the only redeeming person in the movie is a side character that may have bought a very specifically intimate gift at Tiffany which is definitely nicer than the snow before the maple syrup hit it. It's the grand finale
Les, Kurt, and Jason are back with one more piece of pop culture WTF before diving back into Lifetime and Hallmark movies because the SAG-AFTRA strike is finally over! One person not in love with the new contract is Justine Batemen… and that sends the guys down a rabbit hole about other Family Ties cast members. It also ties into this week's featured selection because of a Billy Very and the Beaters connection. But before that, the guys reminisce about Matthew Perry, Jason and Les teach Kurt the difference between a bossy bottom and a power bottom, and Blac Chyna's daughter's party was thrown by Khloe Kardashian! Then the guys start dissecting a show that could have stood for a LOT more dissecting before it made it to air, 1987's Roomies. Starring a post-Rocky Burt Young and a pre-Lost Boys Corey Ham, Roomies features a premise so insanely problematic, that the worst thing about the show isn't even the singing trio that all seem to be on the same bowel movement schedule. Put on your Vagina University hoodie, because we're going back to college with a bunch of clearly middle aged men! Dennis is joined via Zoom by Marc Saltarelli, the director of the new documentary Studio One Forever, about the legendary Weho disco Studio One. Dennis is also joined by writer-performer Bruce Vilanch, who appears in the film and was a regular at the club back in the day. The pair discuss the colorful and sometimes controversial history of the club, the club's treacherous back stairs, and how Studio One is often thought of as a rip-off of Studio 54 but it's actually the other way around. They also talk about the club's founder Scott Forbes whose vision didn't always include people who didn't look like him, like women and people of color. They also talk about the early AIDS benefits that happened in the Backlot cabaret space. One of these was headlined by Joan Rivers and caused such controversy at the time that her family received death threats. But the show went on! Other topics include: the treasure trove of Studio One photos that was discovered in a most unlikely place, the courage it took gay men of the era to line up on Robertson Boulevard to get in and the songs that always remind Bruce and Marc of Studio One. https://www.facebook.com/studiooneforever/
Five Cs of History. Change Over Time #1 of 4. Roger Casement has been a subject of fascination - and controversy - for over a century. During his lifetime, he was an internationally-recognized champion for human rights, and was instrumental in exposing the horrors surrounding the rubber industry in the Belgian Congo and Peruvian Putumayo. Significantly, he spent his life striving to do more than just expose the injustices of the Congo and Putumayo - he built a network of activists and leaders willing to intercede, push for reform, and demand change for the indigenous peoples who suffered under European occupation. After years working within the British Empire, he was radicalized in his Irish nationalist beliefs, and spent the last two years of his life working to fight for Ireland's independence from Britain. After his execution, some held on to the memory of him as a humanitarian hero, others claimed he was another martyr of the Irish nationalist cause, and still others distanced themselves from his evident homosexuality. The question of his sexuality determined whether or not he could be counted among the ‘real' Irish heroes. Find the transcript and show notes at www.digpodcast.org Learn more about your ad choices. Suzanne Sommers steps Behind The Rope. No, your eyes are not deceiving you. One of THE MOST LEGENDARY names in TV history, an author of almost thirty books, an entrepreneur in every sense of the word, an Informercial Superstar before we understood the word Informercial, a Gay Icon and so many more monikers, we could go on all day. Suzanne Sommers!!!! Hard to imagine it has been almost forty five years since Suzanne first played Chrissy Snow on Three's Company, a show which is still as beloved today by the current gen as when it first premiered. A man pretending to be gay to live with two women in order to share the rent, Jack Tripper, Three's Company was ahead of its time in even mentioning “gay” on a Prime Time ABC show and showing a straight man comfortable enough in his sexuality to show his “nontraditional” sensitive side making “gay” ok. Suzanne, a trailblazer, left her iconic Chrissy Snow role after five seasons demanding the equal pay of her male colleagues, a topic at the forefront of discussion in Hollywood over the past few years. Switching gears, there is no mention of Suzanne Sommers without thinking of the Iconic Thighmaster and vice versa. Back on ABC many years later as part of the Iconic TGIF lineup, Suzanne found herself opposite Dallas' Patrick Duffy in the brilliant “Step by Step”. We had to pick Suzanne's brain on her last book, “A New Way to Age” considering she is Seventy Four years young and is aging backward before our very eyes - no really check out our IG for pics. Although she is busy running her lifestyle empire, we had to ask if she would ever act again and who she would love to star alongside. We chat famous friends, Kardashians, RHOBH, DWTS & more. Finally, we discuss her recent statements of her “three times a day” sex life with husband and life partner, Alan Hamel. No question is off limits in this no holds bar chat with one of the most well known Icons to have ever stepped Behind The Rope. @suzannesomers @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef Bonus Episodes Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope Merch Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 BONUS & AD FREE EPISODES Available at - www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope BROUGHT TO YOU BY: PAIR EYEWEAR - www.paireyewear.com/VELVET (15% Off Your First Purchase) DAME - www.dameproducts.com (Enter Code VELVETROPE For 15% Off Your Order) MERCH Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 Learn more about your ad choices.
